Beavers Report April 2022 to March 2023
Another year of normal Beaver meetings which is great for the children and the activities we can organise. We are still maintaining safe meetings with dedicated sets of equipment and materials for activities when we can, sanitising equipment after use and hand sanitising equipment is available if required.
Our events have broadened over the last year with normal service resuming for us at Beavers. The Beavers have retained their strong leadership team for another year and have also had a number of young leaders and volunteers to help with the running of the evenings. With that in mind I would like to thank the whole Beaver team: -

The 2[nd] Reigate Beaver section continues to be a very popular Colony to join. Our waiting list remains longer than we would like, with some children joining at only a few months old!! Luckily, we now have a lovely Membership Secretary who deals with the many enquiries we get for membership...
We currently have 20 Beavers attending our colony with 4 others invited and due to commence soon.
We are now trying to run our balanced and varied programme again with the emphasis always ringing in our ears from each meeting’s opening chant “Beavers Beavers fun and games”. Events that have taken place over the past year are: -

Luckily last year we were able to restart our Group Camp and had a great theme of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe which had some great activities and wonderful weather for the whole weekend. We hope all the children who came along had a great time and are looking forward to the upcoming Group Camp.
Looking forward to the coming year we have some great activities lined up in our programme and are aiming towards the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award in the activities we will be doing.
Again, we would like to thank everyone who helps at Beavers, especially the leaders and young leaders for their tireless help at all meetings and events but, should anyone fancy it, we would welcome any further help just get in touch with our GSL to have a chat about us.

Cubs Report April 2022 to March 2023
The Cub Section has had a busy, action-packed year! This has been the first full year of Scouting we’ve had without the disruption of the pandemic and we’ve embraced the opportunity to meet in person, have fun, learn things and take on new and rewarding challenges.
During the year, we have also seen a change in leadership. Nicki Watkins stepped down from her role as Cub Scout Leader with Andreas Wood joining the section as Leader. Thank you to everyone for their support in this time of change. The Cub Leadership Team now looks like this:

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Nicki for her years of amazing service not only to the Cubs but to the Group in general.
This year has seen a big push in trying to get some badges on the Cubs’ sleeves and the Leadership Team put together programs specifically to achieve this. The Cubs have jumped at the opportunity to push themselves and step out of their comfort zone and it’s been a joy to watch them grasping new concepts. Scouting is all about doing one’s best and the Cubs have certainly done that. We’ve done map reading, creating community maps, learned BSL, practiced First Aid, found out about aviation and flight principles and even did some Backwoods cooking in less-than-ideal weather conditions!
Cub Camp and Group Camp also made a return to the program this year and these were both really well attended by the section.
In addition to our regular Wednesday night evenings, the Cubs had the opportunity to pitch themselves against other Cub Groups in the area in the form of the District Go-Karting and the District Cooking Competitions. The Go-Karting was fiercely contested with our Cubs putting in impressive group and individual efforts. We claimed third place overall with strong performances in the group stages seeing us through to the final. The District cooking competition was equally competitive and while we did not place in the rankings, the Cubs put out an excellent 2 course meal, learned a lot about cooking and came away wanting to take the competition by storm next year! Scout Report April 2022 to March 2023
Summer Term 2022
The summer term last year kicked off with our Earlswood Carnival 2022 . Hopefully, you’ve just enjoyed this year’s! For the term, we started with a cooking challenge of risotto outside, which was soon followed by Group Camp 2022 . In preparation for the upcoming Summer Camp, we taught the
Scouts how to pitch and strike a tent outside, and efficiently pack a rucksack. The half term ended with a Wide Game on Redhill Common.
We started the next term making the most of the weather by playing football in the walled pitch off Emlyn road. We then partook in Tidy Earlswood week by litter picking the local area. We filled over 6 bin liners! Still using the good weather, we did orienteering on Redhill Common. We ended the term with Team Building exercises and a good game of Rounders at The Ring.
SCOUTABOUT
This summer term also hosted the once-every-three-year and this time COVID-postponed Scoutabout camp, which is an incredible camp attended by over 4000 Scouts and Guides across the county, filled with hundreds of awesome activities to do. Like the previous Scoutabout, we teamed up with the 34th Reigate, sharing pitch space and resources. In an attempt to reset the three-yearly schedule, Scoutabout is happening again next year!
SUMMER CAMP
After the summer term we took 6 Scouts up to the Lake District for our Summer Camp 2022 ! It just so happened that the 34th Reigate were also on the same site. Our provided site was… interesting; a small outcrop of rocks we had to somehow arrange all our tents on. We just managed, by squeezing all the Scouts into a single tent. During the camp we went on an “express” steam train , traversed Lake Windermere via a cruise boat , visited an aquarium , toured the town of Bowness , climbed rock faces and a tall “tree”, and that was just on the first couple of days! The highlight of the week was probably the hike up Old Man of Coniston led by Adrian, where the Scouts showed impressive support for each other. We also went kayaking , canoeing and canoe-rafting on lake Derwentwater, with many games being played on the water. We end the camp with a visit to Blackwater waterpark , Fish’n’Chips and a traditional game of Rounders .
Autumn Term 2022
We started the Autumn term off with Marshmallow tower challenges, which led to some impressive towers. This was followed by the Summer Camp feedback evening , in which we had a lovely turn out, so thank you very much to the parents. We continued the term with a Wide Game before doing some badge work towards the Outdoor Challenge badge . We were meant to continue the badge work in the Autumn camp, but this had to be postponed until the spring due to low turnout. Keeping with the badge theme, we progressed everyone’s First Aid skills before ending the term with Air Rifle shooting at Jordan Heights.
In the second half of the term we enjoyed our Firework night and had a two-evening cooking badge progress which involved planning and cooking a meal. The highlight of the term was probably the Craft evening organised by Giles, which challenged the Scouts to create self-propelled vehicles using various craft ingredients before racing them. We ended the term with a favourite indoor caving followed by our end of term 10-pin bowling event at Hollywood Bowl.
Spring Term 2023
Spring term kicks off with some cooking on Trangia’s (camping stoves) followed by a Task Master evening hosted by our suited-up Will and Stephen (just like the TV show). Giles follows this with an evening of various Lego building challenges . We end the half term with a 5km Circular Hike to Reigate and back.
After Easter we start the half term with Pancake cooking, followed by the first of two rehearsals for the end of term performance. These were separated by a knot learning evening, before the performance itself
as part of the Creative Challenge award. We had a great mix of performances, from puppet shows to talk shows, from campfire sketches to comedy sketches, and not to forget poems and magic tricks! SPRING CAMP
Our backwoods cooking survival camp finally took place in the spring, with 7 attendees. We spent the majority of the weekend learning to make fires and cooking on them. This included learning to safely gather and prepare wood with axes and saws as well as using a flint and steel to light them. We cooked a variety of items on the fires, including our breakfast of sausages, toasted sandwiches for lunch with baked apples and bananas for dessert, and baked potatoes with cans of food cooked directly on the fires followed by bread and butter pudding. Our Warden even surprised us by providing two large Trouts freshly caught! After an impromptu gutting lesson, we cooked them on the fires as well. A very different experience from using gas stoves!

Explorer Report April 2022 to March 2023.
Attendance “down” but challenging adventurous Explorer Scouting continues – and the year ends with lots of new joiners -- onwards & upwards!
Summer 2022 opened with the Earlswood Carnival and Explorers & their parents were prominent on setting up & running stalls. We especially supported Jacob in his fundraising for attendance at World Scout Jamboree in August 2023. His “jars of sweets” selling like hot cakes!
A focus for the term was “You Shape” where the Explorers organised activities themselves as part of their You Shaped Award. Jacob, Oscar & Sachin ran a “squid games” night (don’t ask!) – it was all bit of fun though super competitive and more importantly gave the Explorers responsibility for running an evening, and even putting together a risk assessment! We then played Boules at the Pendleton pub, part of our once a term – let’s try something new programme…as well as rifle shooting in Reigate Caves and a Fitness Challenge organised by Zac, Milo & Ruben (again You Shaped” in practise). We built our usual “Ropewalk Bridge” on the green for the AGM, worked had at St John; s Churchyard burning weeds, and branches, and lots of over-growth. much to the annoyance of “one” neighbour, apparently wood fires & thus smoke are “not acceptable” and ended the term with Karting at Team Sport Karting in Crawley.
Of course, the highlight of every Explorer year is Summer Camp. In 2022 we visited the Yorkshire Dales and attempted the Yorkshire Three Peaks (in <12hours). In poor weather and with multiple mishaps – in the end five completed the long day of over 19 miles and two (Oscar & James) all three Peaks). Adrian spent a considerable time with Jacob ay Westmorland Hospital. but that’s another story!
We then moved on to Great Tower in the Lake District to join the Scouts. It was a wonderful week of Ghyll Scrambling, Kayaking, Canoe-rafts, cooking competitions & finally a visit to Sandcastle Water park at Blackpool.
Before the start of the Autumn term – we run a 2[nd] Reigate Explorer Scouts’ 20[th] Anniversary Reunion, using all sorts of communication methods we track down over 30 ex Explorers from the last 20 years. and reminisce over photos & a BBQ. A magical evening at which Adrian unveils the latest version of the Explorers Roll of Honour. (see photo).
Autumn term starts with numbers down & new joiners not coming up from Scouts until half-term/ Christmas. We run a joint Wide game with the Scouts on Redhill Common, invent human table football, a Spanish Master chef night, based around various tapas dishes, A debate evening – where Explorers are challenged to run a Model UN as Leaders set them difficult world crisis scenarios to come up with solutions. The term includes an African Drumming Night (another example of trying something new) where we are joined by Explorers from 1[st] /2[nd] Horley.
We end the term bag-packing at Sainsbury’s, brilliant turn-out by the Explorers helps the Group raise almost £1500.00 and a Night at a Virtual Games arena in Dorking.; see photo. and Austin’s scary eyes!
The highlight of the Term is a Narrow Boating weekend around the canals of west & central London, there is nothing like trying to open & close multiple lock-gates whilst watched by thousands at Camden Lock! The Narrow Boat Skipper describes our Explorers as the “best he’s ever had on board.” A compliment indeed!
Winter Term 2023 sees an increase in numbers as new members join us from 2[nd] , 38[th] & 24[th] Reigate Scout Troops. Great to have lots of enthusiastic new Explorers. We enter a Team in the District Quiz & a very inexperienced Team in Great Escape (which we finish a creditable 7[th] (out of 16).
The Explorers also run the Group Fundraising Quiz Night – another example of wonderful team-work from all those
present. Other events over the term include a Burns Night supper, Expedition training, rabbit skinning & cooking followed by a Survival Camp in freezing weather!). Plus, our ever-popular pancake night (surprisingly a100% turn out!).
The term is finished off with a Night Hike from Box Hill to Redhill and Scuba Diving in a Pool in Caterham – during which we say goodbye top Josh & Joe as A Level’s and 18[th] birthdays bring an end to their Explorer Scouting. Thanks to both of them who navigated the disappointments of covid and remote Scouting expertly. I personally will never forget Joe’s “Ready, Steady, Cook” challenge on Zoom and his parents comment of “this is fantastic”!
Another incredibly varied year of Explorer Scouting and we end 22/23 with numbers back up to 20+ and lots of new enthusiasm. Thanks go to Paul, Adam Steve and Andy, with occasional help from Jacob D & Trevor.

We all thought it would be hard to top last year’s Earlswood Carnival, but the turnout was at least as good, if not better despite a very small shower. A good gauge is that we bought an extra barrel of beer for the beer tent and still sold out before the end of the carnival! Well done to all involved, but a special well done and thank you to our Fund-Raising Lead, Rachel for her tireless energy in the planning and organising of the event.
We have continued to strengthen our leadership team over the last year by ongoing recruitment at our various fundraising events and the great work through our social media outlets. We now have the following new volunteers:

We continue to have great support from our District training team who monitor, help, and chase up any outstanding training and I do my best to support and encourage from a group perspective.
We had a very productive Leaders meeting last term, which including going through new training material to help the leaders with their Section Programs, ensuring that there is a clear progression of activities as the children move through the sections. All leaders found it very useful and we are preparing dedicated section guides for them to use.
OSM continues to be used effectively by the leaders for section program planning and parent communications. We now also have WiFi at the HQ to allow easier use of on-line tools during section meetings.
We hope further progress with our new Scout HQ will be starting again soon, and the brilliant work achieved by our fundraising team means we are in a very strong position with funds needed for the rebuild.

Report from the Chair
It has been a busy year, we have seen great work within all the sections and it has been great to see and hear about all the activities that happen within the group. We always need volunteers to support the different sections so please talk to Steve the GSL if you want to help in this way.

It is great to have a good, enthusiastic committee and my thanks go out to them for helping to keep the group running from behind the scenes. We currently have vacancies for a couple of parents on the Exec, so if you can spare about 6 hours a year we would love to hear from you.
Building
We have been running the fundraising for the new building project for a few of years now and we have raised over £100,000 towards it. We have been trying to make progress on the building side with our landlord and we did apply for funding to build from the council with our local councillor’s support, but were unsuccessful due to a technicality associated with the current status of the land that we did not know about.
In order to support this application, we enlisted the support of an architect, building expert and also admin support and these were funded mainly by donations from a small number of individuals who have our thanks.
Our finances remain very healthy and we are fortunate that our new landlord continues to kindly support our activities through the use of his facilities. This support is vital in giving the group a sense of stability and a home in the community.
The fundraising committee has been very successful this year raising funds headed by Rachel Wood and we, as an executive, will be supporting them fully with the organisation and fundraising ahead. Gift Aid
YOU CAN HELP BY: completing a Gift Aid form online in OSM - it only takes a minute and costs you nothing. Gift Aid allows us to claim back 25p in the £1 from the Treasury, increasing the group’s revenue.
Finally
We continue to fulfil the original purpose of Scouting; promoting the development of young people through having fun and enjoyment whilst they learn new skills.
I would like to thank parents and families who assisted during the year, when the call came they were willing to help. It’s not possible for me to name you all but you know who you are. I would also like to thank the Executive committee who support us in ensuring the continuance of the Group.

Treasurers Report
The accounts have been prepared using the receipts and payments methods under the Scout Association Policy and Rules (POR). Turnover was £47K compared to last year’s £23K, due to more direct donations to the building fund, veteran car rally, bag packing, quiz and some income already received for the carnival held April 2023.
With total current assets of just over £107K, including the building fund of just over £100K the club is very healthy at present. With the help from leaders and members of the committee the collection of subscriptions of £25 per quarter has continued throughout the year, many thanks to parents for their continued support financially.
Income

We received donations to cover the costs of the new website and other miscellaneous expenses.

The carnival income from 2022/23 includes some corporate donations from this year’s carnival (April 2023) and last year’s (April 2022), so about £1,500 relates to 2022/23 accounts instead of 2023/24. Please be aware we do cash accounting and so this is acceptable in the accounts.
Fundraising - A concerted effort is ongoing to raise funds for our new home and we have seen progress on this with the veteran car rally, bag packing, quiz night, carnival and hall rentals as well as individual donations.
Donations - In addition to the monies raised through fundraising, we also receive very generous donations from parents and other members of the community. This amounted to just under £3,5K (though we do have to refund £1k to the Scout Association overpaid to us in error in the will of an ex-scout) for the financial year 2022/23. Many thanks to anyone who has been kind enough to make a donation.
Gift Aid - For the 2022/23 period, we were able to reclaim £1,609.61 of gift aid. Many thanks to all the parents/guardians who have completed their online form. If you have not done so yet, please do take the time as we can reclaim 25% back for every subscription.
Expenses

The annual capitation sum of £3,645 (including early payment discount) was paid to Reigate District (and on to County & national Headquarters) based on a total of 81 beavers, cubs, scouts & explorers.

Electricity costs – these are high due to catching up following a meter reading. We have now had a smart meter fitted, so this will be avoided moving forward.

Donation expenses increased this year due to supporting scouts/explorers attending World Scout Jamboree and other scouting events.

Misc expenses: Internet, Explorer reunion, tent purchase & repairs, scarf & camp badges, card donation machines and the new website
