ACTIVITY TEAM 2022

The Tuesday nights are back and as popular as ever, this year we have had 18 Leaders/Explorers and Scouts attending each week, trying both Canoes and Kayaks to gain there Canoe England Discover and Explore awards, Personal and Leadership Permits. We have also had two Explorers Dom and Ella Quatrucci and Geordie, who passed their Lee valley legacy Course assessment.

Sudbury District does now have an inflatable Trampoline and Zorb ball for use on the river if Groups would like to hire them, fully insured.

In August the SPLAT Team headed back to North Wales for their 6th White Water taster weekend, providing an introduction to white water and hopefully inspiring the next generation.

Sudbury District would like to thank 3rd Sudbury Scout Group for all their support.

Welcome everyone,

This year has been my second in the role.

I have visited all the units over the course of the last year and assisted/supported when required. I will again will be visiting all the units each term.

The numbers of explorers in the district are ever increasing within all the units, however, the Bovine Explorer Unit closed just before the summer due to lack of explorers.

Over the next couple of months, I will be speaking to GSL’s/SL who do not have a unit attached to their group to set up a new Explorer Unit which will cover their areas, one being Boxford and one which will hopefully cover Glemsford, Long Melford, Acton and Waldingfield and Lavenham. I also have a few leaders who are willing to help run these.

Unfortunately, being unwell for over three months, some of the district activities/camps that I was planning will take place during the next year, these include –

District Explorer Camp – with a successful summer camp at Hawkhirst Scout Activity Centre with explorers attending from Quay, Stour Valley and Bures Dragons the consensus from the explorers was that they would all like to do more events/camps together.

Monopoly Run.

Winter camp. District hikes.

Archery/shooting competitions.

Explorer get me out of here camp challenge.

These will all be discussed at the next District Explorers Leaders meeting which will be in the next few weeks.

I would just like that thank all the explorer leaders in the district for all the hard work they are doing. I have a good team around me with Andy and Alan and their assistance and support is invaluable.

Young Leaders & Duke of Edinburgh Report 21/22

Young Leader numbers have increased and we have over 35 active Young Leaders helping at groups across the district. Most Young Leaders are active Explorers and working towards Duke of Edinburgh Awards and Chief Scouts Awards, so have should see an increased number of these over the next 12 months. Duke of Edinburgh, we completed 9 Gold, 2 Silver and 7 Bronze expeditions, these will complete the full awards in the next couple of months, In addition, we are running the Chief Scouts and Queens awards along side Duke of Edinburgh program. In the last year one Explorer completed their Dofe Gold and Queens Award and has now become an Explorer Leader. The weekend of the 16th. to 18th. September 2022 will see, 24 Explorers from Suffolk complete their Expedition Practice weekend, of which 21 are from Sudbury District.

8 Young Leaders have completed and been awarded the Young Leader Belts in the last 12 months, with more in the pipeline. Over the next year, we will carry on promoting the Young Leader program and be adding a number of dedicated Young Leader training days through the year, this will be in place and set to go by the end of September 2022.

Sudbury District Cubs Report 2022

Well, what can we say about this year! We started the year with a red readiness level meaning that no one could meet face to face. As the weeks passed and it became apparent that Covid was not going away our plans for the summer had to be postponed. Our water activities day at Bures, our skills day at Bradfield Park and our day trip to the National Space Centre all put on the shelf for another time.

However, this did not stop the Cub Packs in Sudbury District. Using a plethora of virtual media, packs gradually started to meet back, some setting tasks at home via WhatsApp or Facebook and sharing photos afterwards and some using zoom to hold virtual meetings.

All over the District Cubs were, baking, crafting, quizzing, doing scavenger hunts, putting on puppet shows, showing off their collections, building dens from cushions and blankets and spending the night in them, carrying out science experiments, playing bingo, completing escape rooms and so much more.

Come September some pack did begin to meet face to face again but with some tough restrictions on numbers and activities and of course some heavy duty cleaning regimes. But this was short lived as come the New Year we were again back to virtual meetings.

We would like to say a very big thank you and well done to all our Cub Leaders who have changed their approach to scouting completely over the past year and have had to re-think the activities and programmes. We would also like to say a big well done to all our Cubs who have embraced the changes and given their all to keep Cub Scouting going.

We are now crossing our fingers that next year will see less restrictions and more Scouting.

– Chairmans report 2021/22

Many thanks for attending this years Sudbury District AGM and for all you, the volunteers, do throughout each and every year to enhance the Scouting experience for our young people it never ceases to amaze me all the time and energy that you give.

It’s been incredible seeing how you have all returned to Scouting and the number of young people that benefit from this.

The District committee has met on many occasions since our last AGM and all members have provided valuable input to help ensure the District continues to be successful. The District has had a somewhat turbulent year with the loss of Steve Cridland as the joint District Commissioner, this was a big loss as he was a well liked character but we are lucky that he has remained within Scouting in his new challenges. Charmain has continued to successfully lead the team as District Commissioner after having considered County positions before Steve’s departure, with the appointment of a great leadership team around her we can look forward to her continuing in role and supporting and growing District.

Personally I’ve enjoyed meeting many new faces in Scouting this year at AGM's and various Group evenings and look forward to visiting more Groups and meeting even more of you in the coming year.
