3.1 Actions from 350[th] meeting

Insurance policies are in place for the Field Committee and Village Hall. As part of those policies committee members are indemnified up to £250,000 per member. Paul would like to gather further information regarding the cover.

3.2 Other matters arising

4.0 Field Committee

Martin Hennock

Since last Trust meeting we have continued to be in touch with HDC about emptying Dog Poo bins. There is still an issue with reporting of the one by the car park, but they are being emptied most of the time.

We told you of the potential of a path between the play park and the Hall last time. As you will see it is now being constructed.

As most of you will know Chris is standing down at the end of the financial year. We thank him for the many years of service but will do that properly at a future meeting.

5.0 Hall Management Committee

Paul Harding

Bookings remain strong and hall utilization is high. It is hoped this will continue through to the summer and beyond.

Finances are robust

General maintenance continues. Thanks to the team who put in hours of their time to ensure the Hall is kept in such a high level of repair and condition. We will need to undertake some work on the main hall floor over the summer. A quick calculation estimates that were we to employ individual contractors to undertake maintenance activities, the equivalent cost would be more than £12,000.

Projects likely to be addressed in the early part of 2024:

We have received two quotations for installing solar panels, battery and all the equipment to enable any excess power production to be fed into the network. The quotations were close, (within 3%). While we will continue to seek grants, timing is all. We have looked at finances and consider that we should commit to an installation before this summer. I am hopeful that at the next Trust meeting I can report the system is up and running.

Fundraising in the form of Film Nights and Quiz nights continue. Last week’s quiz night had seven teams, all of whom seemed to enjoy themselves.

The next film night is Friday 19th April. “The Great Escaper” starring Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson. Tickets selling very well!!!!!!

Succession planning key for 2024 – adverts have been placed for new members. Both the Chair and Secretary have indicated they will not stand next year.

6.0 Sports and Social Club

The social club is still trying hard to be profitable whilst coping with high energy charges, increased insurance costs, a lack of sport on the green, high satellite tv charges and constant brewery increases.

The football club have not been able to play games at home due to wet weather coupled with poor drainage on the green and this has had a knock on effect for the social club.

The club has decided to stop subscribing to BT Sports to save money and will be looking at different brewery options for the supply of drinks.

Membership cards are now in full force requiring members to produce their cards when purchasing drinks. This way we are rewarding members with club prices and non-members must pay around 10 percent more. The cards also operate the entrance doors if they are locked.

For the third year running, the issue of dogs being allowed in the club was voted for at AGM and this time dogs were given the paws up. So dogs are now allowed in the club but there are a few rules to be adhered to.

7.0 Reports from the Sports Club

7.1 Football

Clive Williams

General:

The football team recently secured sufficient points to continue next season in the West Sussex Premier League.

The impact of having just one team was noticeable on and off the pitch.

Player numbers to support availability and injuries, and of course the financial impact.

Based on costs and other football club charges, the club budgeted too breakeven.

It was hoped that the Run BG would make a donation for car parking assistance but as we all know that was unable to be the case.

The poor weather throughout what appears to be most of the season, has led to a build of fixtures. In April, the club will be playing 9 games, last week playing 4 in just 7 days.

The season finishes 4th May when we look forward to summer training in July. 2024-25 Season the club plan to return to 2 teams.

1904 Club:

The “1904 Club” is now under way with the first gathering on the 27th April.

Membership is now at 17, not too far off the target number but we hope to boost numbers on or just after the 27th April.

Pitch:

Gentle reminder to Cricket Club to allow for Cricket to finish home fixtures by the end of August as the football season starts on 1st September. The Football Club reciprocate by ensuring no home fixtures from May onwards.

7.2 Cricket

Russ Parkes (read by Martin Hennock)

Preparations are underway for the forthcoming season, following a committee meeting on 8[th] April.

The first senior home game is scheduled for Saturday, 11[th] May and the first colts’ game on 2[nd] May, weather permitting.

The Club is running 2 league teams, 3 colts’ teams (U10s, 13s, and 14s), and hopefully there will be some Sunday friendly games. New players are always very welcome and more information can be found on the Barns Green Play Cricket website.

The square has been cut and rolled, although other pre-season work has been curtailed due to the extremely wet conditions. A working party has been organised for 4[th] May with plans to tidy around the Green, check changing rooms, and repair nets.

Other plans include a President’s Day in September and a six-a side tournament (known as The BGPL).

7.3 Rugby Football

Bill Bailey

BGRFC finish our season in good heart with results going our way in the last 3 games plus a County Cup final to look forward to this coming Saturday against Ditchling to be played at Seaford Rugby Club.

Our last league game (we will finish fifth out of nine, having won 8 of our 14 games) was against Jersey away, which gave a large group of players and supporters the opportunity to travel and stay overnight on the island. A victory was followed by a good evening out!

Walking Rugby has continued throughout the winter and on recent occasions we have shared the AGP at Horsham RFC with our contact team as the Training Area just became too wet to play on.

Membership remains high and whilst the summer is always a dangerous time as players retire and leave the game we look forward to next season optimistically tempered by a lack of complacency.

8.0 Reports from other Organisations

8.1 Guides, Brownies and Rainbows

Fiona Christer (read by Rachel McAlonan)

I apologise for my lack of presence at recent meetings due to unforeseen circumstances. My priority has been doing what’s needed to keep the guiding units running.

ACTIVITIES

The girls had a great end of term trip to the fire station – the girls all loved it.

We had a visit from Loxwood handbell ringers- they played a variety of tunes and then the children were able to have a go too.

We have plans for a Back to Front night, some bigger art projects, a trip to the guiding camp site and Olympic challenges for all the girls.

We are excited to have a Space dome coming for both Rainbows and Brownies to have a night amongst the stars.

We have welcomed 2 new rainbows, 2 new Brownies and 2 girls have moved up from Rainbows to Brownies. For the first time in a while we have spaces within Rainbows. Brownies remains full.

Rainbows

The girls will have sea themed night, make mini gardens, try some experiments and hopefully earn lots more badges.

Brownies

Almost half the brownie’s enjoyed a trip to see Wicked in London – our first time venturing to a London show. We had a great time and thankfully there were no train strikes!

Brownies have enjoyed a variety of science experiments – their favourite has been making different types of slime.

We have introduced a cooking club for brownies – giving some of the girls the opportunity to arrive a bit earlier and make/bake recipes which are a bit more involved and aren’t possible to do as part of the whole unit.

8.2 Itchingfield Parish Council

Alan Strudley

8.3 Parochial Church Council

Martin Hennock

The church continues to operate as normal but without a Rector at present. The PCC is working with Slinfold PCC to write a profile of the parishes and specification of the person we are looking for to be the new Rector of Itchingfield with Slinfold.

We hope to be able to advertise the post in the next 3 months, but there is a shortage of clergy at present so we do not know when we will find the right person quickly.

Otherwise the church is functioning as previously, with the normal service pattern and visiting clergy taking services and with the monthly family service and Messy church. Ongoing maintenance work on the building continues and we thank those who turned up a couple of weeks ago to help with spring cutting and clearing in the churchyard and to the Parish council for financial support for churchyard maintenance.

8.8 Barns Green Youth Club

Karen Ott (read by Rachel McAlonan)

As usual at this time of year the numbers of young people attending Youth Club rises dramatically as Year 6 pupils turn 11 and can join us. For the first time in years we have as many girls and boys which changes the dynamics but means we can now include some more girly crafts which is nice for me.

We are looking forward to getting outside during the summer term with the lighter evenings and hopefully dry weather.

Recently we have made soap for Mothers Day, resin coasters and pancakes.

While all this is good news we do have a major problem which is lack of adults.

We did put a notice in the BigMag but no response so far.

With increasing numbers we need more adult helpers but unfortunately Julia needs an operation soon and Karen’s work as a chief exam invigilator means that we are struggling.

Tom was taken on to work every other week but since Harry left has been doing every week however his work has been moved to Hampshire and he cannot guarantee to get back in time anymore. Unless we sort staff soon we may have to close some weeks which would be very disappointing when the demand is high.

It seems incredible that we cannot find someone for what is a paid position £60 for 3 hours. If anyone know somebody who may be interested please get them to contact us asap.

We also need volunteers to help on an occasional basis.
