Icklesham Trusts Committee Annual Review 2023/24.

2023/24 was a big year for the Trust, particularly given the resolution of the long running Pavilion issue. After receiving the approval of the village, the Pavilion was substantially upgraded. Despite the expenditure of approximately £49,000, the Trust ended the year with a healthy bank balance. We had a good number of well attended Trust events, including the combined Fete and Flower show which broke all records..

Finances: The accounts show a loss for the year, but this is misleading in that we record income and expenditure in the year it is received or incurred. Much of the income to upgrade the Pavilion was raised in earlier years whereas all expenditure went out in 2023/24. If we concentrate on the cash flow within the year, we will see that the bank balance was not only healthy at year end but the movement in the year was considerably less than the expenditure on the pavilion. The latter is due to to the income generated from events within the year and the further fund raising for the pavilion. This included donations from local families and the football club, plus grants from Sport England, Rother District Council and Icklesham Parish Council. Although our reserves are strong relative to normal Trust expenditure we will look to maintain a good level, both to allow us to fund improvements in the Hall and to help with the unexpected. We are conscious that our income base is concentrated, being reliant on a small number of hall users and events; we are working to expand the base.

This year we insulated the Hall roof and installed new heating controls, having secured grant monies from Rother District Council. In the coming year we plan a good deal of maintenance on the Hall and some upgrading. We also need to raise the Hall storage capacity as the success of the clubs brings with it a higher level of associated support materials.

Affiliated Club Activities: The sport teams, being cricket, football and stoolball, continue to thrive. The non-sport clubs also had a good year with the flower show having record entries and the art group with its highest membership ever. The drama group ran a successful pantomime, and the youth club maintained a strong cadre of local youngsters and held a successful summer camp. The monthly produce market continues to attract a very good number of stalls and villagers, and the Tuesday Club is popular. The chair-based exercises, introduced in the year went down well. The Festive Friday held in the run up to last year’s Christmas spurred us to run a similar event for the coming Christmas, which went even better. We ran a thumpingly successful music night and the various quiz nights were well attended and good fun. All in all, an active year.

Committee: Lesley Birch our Bookings Secretary is standing down. Lesley has made a remarkable contribution, not only in driving up hall bookings but also in getting several of the Trust’s activities started or improved. Lesley was determined to bring us into the modern world. It is largely thanks to her that we now have an active web site, internet, electronic hall bookings and a card reader for payments. On behalf of the Committee, I thank Lesley for her excellent work.

Lesley will be replaced by Trish Milner our excellent events coordinator, who will combine the two roles.

We are looking for new committee members as some of the existing members feel it important to ‘ring the changes’
