Trustees Annual Report for 2022-23

Carolyn Borthwick presented the Annual Report.

Preschool returned in September 2022 to average numbers of children, slightly higher than the previous year, but with a high ratio of two year olds, reducing the numbers possible for each session until the children turned three. This put considerable pressure on the staff and the finances/

It was decided that a new member of staff (with a level 3 qualification) was required, but despite advertising, no-one suitable applied. However, two parent/ex parents asked about the possibility of training to do a level three childcare qualification. Both were eligible for a free funded college place, if employed by the Preschool, but only wanted part time hours. After a formal interview process, it was decided to employ both on part time hours and support their training. Jess and Louise joined the team in January 2023 and have made good progress with their level 3 training.

Child numbers did not grow much during the year, but there were lots of enquiries for a September 2023 start, and with only 8 children leaving, number for September 2023 were looking good.

Small maintenance jobs were completed on the building, some gutter repairs and a repaint of the main room to freshen it up. In the small garden turf was laid to provide an all weather play area and large posts were installed to hold sun shade sails for the summer term, which provided a lovely area for play on a sunny day.

The climbing frame was deemed no longer safe for play and disposed of, and fundraising began in earnest to replace it with some new physical exercise

equipment. Three grants were applied for and were successful, Battle Muffins, British Gypsum, and Battle Town Council and a fourth was waiting for a reply as the preschool year ended. It was hoped that the new equipment could be purchased at half term

The Manager would once again like to express her thanks to all the staff for their continued hard work and support, to Viv for the early morning cleaning and to Alan for keeping the outside areas tidy and the general repairs up to date.

I would also thank Sandie for helping with the day trips, Sandie and Anita for doing some stay and play sessions to support staff, Sandie and Tracy for clearing and cleaning the craft cupboards during the summer holidays, Lisa for constantly stepping in for emergencies as our bank staff member, Tracy for all her hard work on adminstration and applying for grants etc, and Kathryn for her constant support to me during the year.
