– Management report by Stuart Watson and Lauren Dawes
The digital membership launched by National at the start of the year had experienced many initial teething problems and Stuart appreciated all members persevering with the new system.
There had been many successful events, with Chobham & Send YF running the first Westnedge challenge in Oct with Dorking winning. Merstham & Brockham challenged them in March with the “It helps to be small” theme with Reigate winning.
In November, our “Fit for a King” Indoor Rally included new national comps – Call my Bluff, Brains Trust & Jump rope. There were an incredible display of statics and very enthusiastic members with lots of challenges on the day. A special thank you to Beare Green advisory who provided judges lunches and food / drinks on the day.
In November we also saw success at SEAS Winter Fayre Stock Judging, with Surrey virtually winning every class.
A one-page give away calendar was produced featuring winning entries from the Cowpie competition. The calendars were given out to members and displayed through local retailers, raising over £100 in donations
Club officer training was held in December with great representation from clubs and members in Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary roles receiving guidance on Surrey Young Farmers and their roles. It was a well-attended entertaining day including “Bush tucker trial” taste challenges and pizza for lunch!
One of the huge successes of the year was just before Christmas, when our Beare Green club put on three performances of their Jack & the Beanstalk pantomime, raising over £2.2k for charity, which was simply amazing and was a huge amount of work for everyone involved.
In January we saw our new Newdigate YF club open, with great leaders, a very active programme, and some very enthusiastic new members. They have already become an integral part of Surrey Young Farmers.
There was an amazing turn out at AirHop interclub in Feb, with 93 members attending, with the evening co-ordinated by Colin Smith and Beare Green
SE Area comps in March, saw teams competing in the reading, public speaking, junior member of the year, call my bluff and brains trust comps, with the call my bluff team winning and going forward to the National finals.
In May, we saw many clubs celebrate the Kings coronation with banquets, trips to London and other celebrations.
Sadly, our Cowpie Country show was cancelled due to water logged conditions, but Luke Smith & Georgina Forrest agreed to host a Cowpie comps day for members at their Boxhill Barn location. The Cowpie committee, judges and leaders pulled together to put on an amazing day for members, with stock judging, digger challenge, static comps, club challenges, main ring games & egg throwing. Members were also able to qualify for SofE
The South of England show was a great success, Surrey did really well in many static classes, combined with success at stock judging, resulted in our county being overall champions. Our metal work recycling entry and fashion show entry also qualfiied for the National final.
In June we saw 43 members and 5 leaders enjoy a weekend at High Ashurst, with a variety of activities including bush craft and muddy camp building, climbing, a challenge course, archery, and high ropes. Evenings round the campfire cooking popcorn this time and sleeping in teepees with the weather being perfect.
National finals in July saw Colin driving a mini bus with competitors and supporters, to enjoy a weekend at the finals
We would like to especially thank Catherine Turrington, who has been a great County chair and wish her lots of luck at university.
We really appreciate the dedication of our club leaders and helpers, for making Surrey Young Farmers such a great experience for members.
As already mentioned, it is really good to have Karen with us, to help recruit new leaders for the struggling clubs and to increase general membership. Not only that but to also help out at the Indoor Rally and at Cowpie.
I would like to thank Lauren for being my partner in Head of Management, where she has years of experience of running Young Farmers and I couldn’t do without her.
Thanks to the Management Team for listening and giving your support throughout the year.
And finally, thank you to Sandra who taps away at the computer sending out multiple emails to all, running clubs when leaders are away, basically far too many things to mention…thanks for keeping Young Farmers alive. Your enthusiasm just keeps on growing and nothing seems to hold you back.
Great job and well done.

Independent Examiner's report to the Surrey Federation of Young Farmers Clubs
This report on the accounts of the Surrey Federation of Young Farmers for the year ended 31st July 2023, which are set out on pages 1 to 4.
Respective responsibilities of the SFYFC and the examiner
The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act)) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
. examine the accounts (under section 145 of the Act),
-
. to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Act), and
-
. to state whether particular matters may have come to my attention.
Basis of this report
My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair' view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent Examiners statement
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention
-
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements
-
. to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the act;
-
and
-
. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act; have not been met; or
-
to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
