UMT Chair's Report 2023
The year of trying to update and change
This year has seen the changing of the unit facility with the installation of a disabled toilet facility to further enhance the offerings of the unit, we have also seen the loft space cleared out of all marine kit to a new storage in the chacon to allow for better access The staff have also changed with the reduction of a senior staff member, who we wish all the very best in the coming months. The infrastructure is in a good place currently with the building being used by the NHS again, so the finances of the unit are in a healthy position as can be evidenced by the charity submission The boating activity continues to be an outright success, where the team have manged to provide the necessary hours average per cadet, I have not had the time so far to observe this year yet, but I do ask that all parents take a look on a Friday especially if nice and have a drink and watch as its fantastic seeing the effort put in, they cadets also make it look ridiculously easy, which it isn’t, but that is wholly a big thankyou to the staff efforts. The boards still need updating with current members in the lobby but that’s next on the list after we ask for a further effort by parents and staff, to rid the unit of built up stuff over the years of operation, that we may need some day, however its got a little out of hand and we need to dispose or sell all this equipment, we will ask for a day soon to enable your help to be planned The PSA has been able to do some activity but with some new members and some fresh ideas on schedule, it looks promising for the future We still have some work to do on some members of the UMT with people who can assist in the running of the unit and people who can contribute with raising the necessary funds needed to ensure the future success of the unit This year we have lost an integral member of the unit management in George Coles, his involvement in the unit over the years was huge and he will be sorely missed by all My plan is to continue to build the UMT and PSA with new input listened to and acted upon as we can to further enhance the performance.
Mr. C.Harper
Commanding Officer's Report 2023
We supported the towns Remembrance Parade in November, and look to continue this later in the year. As with most years, the unit started the year with training for the drill and ceremonial competitions. With a lot of hard work and dedication from the cadets, staff and volunteers, the cadets won at District level and putin a proud effort at the area competition. The Pageant of Transport event held over the Easter period was a success. The cadets enjoyed seeing the various vehicles, and enjoyed engaging with potential recruits for the unit. The RMC had their work cut out for them in the Gibraltar Cup. This was the first opportunity the detachment had in this competition and they did a brilliant job. As a unit we continue to support our local town and community. At the beginning of June we were honoured to parade with HM Royal Marines Band (Plymouth) and 40 Commando when they paraded the freedom of the town. We then displayed at the towns annual Armed Forces Day, entertaining the crowds with a club and cutlass routine. We are honoured to have been the Mayor's cadet for 5 years in a row. This year it is one of our Royal Marine cadets. Cadets have been busy not only practising for competitions, but also going away on courses; from hillwalking, mountain biking, and ME to name a few, as well as offshore power and sail. Our junior section continues to grow and after a couple of recruiting events we have a waiting list for this group. The RMC had a successful summer camp this year, with lots of stories coming back. All cadets remarked how they enjoyed the camp. We also had a brilliant week at Weymouth, with over 50 boating qualifications across the cadets. We had good fortune with the weather for the week which helped make it such a positive visit. At the meeting Barry thanked the UMT for the support given for this years Weymouth Camp. Barry also brought up the fact that Cadets who had been booked for training aboard TS Royalist have with only 3 or 4 days notice had their courses cancelled. Some of these will age out and with replacement courses open nationally likely as not they will never have the experience of being aboard TS Royalist in their cadet careers.
