Pitminster & Angersleigh Playing Field Association Annual General Meeting 20[th] January 2022 Chairman’s Report ## **General** We continue in our role of maintaining and managing Sellicks Green Playing Field The year 2021 started and ended with Covid disruption but thankfully receded in the middle of the year to allow us to get our fundraising events off the ground and run our Fete and Festival week amongst other events. Reports are attached to provide some detail from the relevant committee leads: Finance Grounds, Football, Cricket, Tennis Social Committee Blagdon Green New Pavillion ## **Finance** Our thanks again to Peter Kirby for his invaluable work keeping the books in order and helping lead our involvement with the Football Association and their potential financial support. (report attached) ## **Grounds** Pete Barton continues to do sterling work maintaining the playing field and I thank him for his support during the festival week and making sure the disruption to the sports teams was properly managed and his work on the frontline against random canine stool. ( report Attached) ## **Tennis** Some £1400 was raised in mainly family membership this year and Andrew proposes we raise fee to £65 but keep early bird cost at £55. Some 26 mainly family memberships were bought during the year. ## **Social Committee** We were blessed this year with good weather during the Open Gardens weekend and it proved a great success, financially and socially. Our thanks to Roz Meikle for organising and all those who made public their gardens for such a lovely event. This good fortune continued for the Fete and Festival week and thanks to everyone’s hard work proved very successful. We had record attendance for the fete and a full turnout for the Quiz and Barn Dance which went down well. Despite the problems with covid isolation and my surgery the festival was a great success and something we can build on in future. I thank everyone involved for their efforts. We have managed to extend the breadth of support for our fundraising with so many people giving their time to make it all happen which was pleasing and bodes well for the future. Special mention to Rosemary for pulling the fete into shape in magnificent fashion and Andrew Paisley for their hard work in deputising for me during the Festival. ## **Blagdon Green** The Green continues to be an asset to village life and I thank Duncan for his continued management of the space including the Carol singing around the tree at Christmas. (report attached) ## **New Pavillion Committee** My thanks again to Duncan for chairing this committee and thank them for their support in adopting a locally built wooden pavilion. This next year will prove critical in our attempt to replace the existing pavilion before it becomes uninhabitable. (report attached) ## **Summary** Overall, 2021 was a very successful year for our fundraising and as it turned out holding everything in the late summer proved perfect timing with regard to Covid concerns. The Playing field is in good condition and the contentious issue of dog mess seems to have improved so far. That progress will no doubt be tested once the warmer weather arrives. The facilities are in reasonable condition and the Tennis court is looking good after its clean up last summer. We have some costs coming for the cricket net but nothing too scary. The pavilion remains a concern with some work needed on the kitchen and more work needed to keep it in reasonable order whilst we try to get its replacement ready for planning permission and then the balance of funding in place. We have a week booked for another festival week in June starting with the fete and ending with the Ball and including the Jubilee celebration beforehand. So, we have a lot to organise and arrange to keep the funding coming in and the new pavilion plan moving forward. I thank everyone involved in the PFA for their contribution over the last year and hope we can make some significant progress this year in making sure the Playing Field continues to provide such varied facilities for the residents and public to enjoy. Mark Bond PFA Chair ## PITMINSTER & ANGERSLEIGH PLAYING FIELD ASSC. ## GROUND REPORT 2021 2021 was another busy year for the playingfield with the lessening of various lockdowns enabling more sport to be played, especially cricket and latterly junior football. The field has coped reasonably well with all the teams using the facilities being very responsible over their use especially during poor weather. With a late summer fete and a wedding on the outfield the ground has recovered well. There has been an increasing issue with dog fouling which the committee felt it had no choice but to act by requesting dog owners to keep their dogs on leads. There has been some objection to this, with some minor vandalism of the signs and verbal abuse but the vast majority of dog owners and widespread community are very supportive and although disappointed understand the rationale behind the decision. I can report that so far, the incidence of dog fouling has fallen dramatically but the test will be in the spring and early summer when problems will be more visible. The pavilion is still an area of concern with another year of general wear and tear but the committee will be well aware of the issues. The cricket netting usually sited by the basketball court has now become so broken down we will need new netting and mat or have to do with out As for 2022 I hope to be able to tidy up various areas of hedging and trees over the next few months and in the spring look to introduce a structured weed and feed regime on the outfield with the assistance of Gordon Matravers(contract sprayer)which I hope will lead to stronger grass growth with less weed and moss. I would like to thank all the sports teams that use the pitch as the help and cooperation I receive from the various teams goes a long way to making my life easier and the PFA for continuing to support the work we do, in sometimes trying circimstances ## **Pitminster and Angersleigh Playing Field Association** 20 January 2022 ## **Annual General Meeting** ## **THE BLAGDON GREEN SUB-COMMITTEE REPORT** The members of the sub-committee are Duncan Meikle (Chair), Angela Parker, Jayne Hares, Arthur Moore and Alan Rouse. Toby Snell is an active ‘friend’ of the Green. The committee continued its work overseeing the maintenance of the Green. The committee hopes the PFA agrees that it is a very valuable asset for Blagdon Hill and the wider parish community. ## **Maintenance** The main maintenance task is that of grass cutting which is carried out by Vernon Spiller of Fulwood Farm. The cutting of the perimeter hedge takes place every autumn. Our thanks to Toby Snell for organising this. ## **Apple Trees** We have ten apple trees on the Green. They are a mixture of eaters, cookers and cider apples, all old Somerset varieties. We are grateful to Mike Rostron and David Downs who look after the maintenance of the trees including annual pruning. ## **Events** A Remembrance service was held in early November. ## Christmas Tree We again erected a Christmas tree on the Green for the festive season. We are very grateful to the Pitminster Charity for the generous donation of £150 to purchase the tree and MTM Tiles for providing the electrical power. Carols on the Green A very successful carol singing event with mulled wine and mince pies was held on 23[rd] December and attended by around 90 local residents. A total of £440.00 was raised. Duncan Meikle Chair, Blagdon Green Committee ## **Pitminster and Angersleigh Playing Field Association** **Annual General Meeting 20 January 2022** ## **NEW PAVILION/HALL SUB-COMMITTEE REPORT** ## The Committee The members of the Committee are Duncan Meikle, Rosemary Hannam, Andrew Hannam, Peter Kirby, Tony Knight, Sarah Wakefield and David Edmondson. ## The Building We are currently working on a proposal put forward by our chair, Mark Bond, for a timber-framed building constructed by local contractors. The projected total cost is £250k - not including VAT. The latest design offers more space at a lower cost than previous designs we have considered. We are awaiting further detailed cost breakdowns. We have engaged a local planning specialist to assist us in the process of gaining planning permission. This will be important when we approach potential funders for grants. ## Funding The PFA has a healthy bank balance and, in addition to that, we have over £30k of Section 106 money from the Tottle Builders, Sellicks Green development. We are very grateful to Malcolm and Graham Tottle for their recent help in securing this amount free of conditions regarding what the funds could be used for. We believe we can approach potential funders with the persuasive fact that we already have around £100,000 to put towards the project.
