“At the end of my seven-year term as Chairman I reflect with some satisfaction that we have, at present, an excellent and involved committee which has been very supportive and hard-working this year. What, alas, we do not have, is the appointment of my successor as Chairman; an issue I hope can be resolved soon.

My thanks to the committee begin with two veterans whose service to the hall pre-dates mine: David Norman, our Treasurer and Stan Wilson, currently leading our subcommittee on the Beckington Cricket club pavilion; an ongoing project.

I’m delighted Mike Collins has taken on the Vice Chairmanship and will initially preside over our monthly meetings until a Chairman is elected. Thanks as well to Sara Coffield, our Secretary and Booking Secretary for dealing with our daily affairs and to David Costello, Hannah Drury, Floor Holmes, Jeanette Hurst and Roz Searle who have all made considerable contributions.

We welcome as current co-opted members, Suzanne Chillman, who has already contributed to the Hall Play Area sub-committee, and Laura Parry, who’ll both be joining the committee during this AGM. Sadly, this will be Floor Holmes’ last meeting as the Beckington Players representative. We thank her for her three-years service including a lot of expert work on the main hall redecoration.

Following our decision at the 2021 AGM, early in 2022 we divided the committee into Management and Working sections; members of the former being Trustees of the charity. This seems to have worked well administratively.

Apart from the cricket pavilion, we have a number of current projects: Hannah Drury is coordinating a group of village volunteers looking at the future modernisation of the play area. We are also examining the choice of a defibrillator which we hope will be installed at the hall before the end of this calendar year and, as Voneus were unable to fulfil their contractual commitment, we are re-examining other wifi options which should be resolved fairly soon

We hosted two events in the past year: at the end of 2021 the Beckington Players’ four excellent performances of ‘Cinderella’ produced a stunning £4500 for the hall funds. Many thanks go to Abi McGillivray and her team. We are delighted that the Players in early December of this year are producing “Dick Whittington”. The hall also hosted a music hall evening, organised by Barry Davies of the Beckington British Legion, to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Over my time as Chairman we have, at times, struggled to find the funds to do all the improvements and major maintenance we would have liked. This remains a challenge, but I take comfort from the growing support we have had from members of the village willing to give their time to help the hall. I do hope my successor can be found before long. I have found the role rewarding.

As the impact of Covid fades, we have seen our hiring income begin to return to normal from rock bottom in 2020. Our Treasurer has ensured that we are currently financially stable, but, as I have said, continuing pressure remains on the committee to keep the hall well-maintained and modernised although I’m confident we have a team in place who can do that and I wish them and the Memorial Hall every success in the future.” - David Prince, Chairman of Beckington Memorial Hall, 17[th] October 2022
