There are several ways communication is encouraged within the village: Vlllage Website- www.bartonstdavid.org.uk A Newsletter is published six times a year The Editor can be contacted on- newsletter@bartonstdavid.org.uk An email distribution list gets information around the vlllage quickly. Email Nicky to be put on the list- nicky.wheeler21@yahoo.co.uk. We are also on Facebook - www.facebook,com/BSDVH. This year we have continued upgrading the Village Hall. We have completed the redecoration of the Village Hall and the old fluorescent ￿lling tubes have been replaced by LED panel lighting. The ageing wooden walkway in the playground has been replaced wlth a newer version. An old shed was repurposed to become a shelter near the tennls court for those players caught out In a sudden storml A major undertaking thi5 year has been a review of all our Policies, Procedures and Risk Assessments, as required by the Charlty Commlssion. These are now available to be seen on the Barton St David website. Pre-school education has been provided in the Village Hall for nearly half a century. It started In the Village Hall on January 10th 1977 operating on five mornings a week. In an exciting new step for the Pre-school, they are moving to new purpose•bullt premlses at Keinton Mandeville Primary School. The Village Hall Committee have every confidence that the Pre-school wlll continue to thrive and wish them success for the future. Our Treasurer applied for and obtalned several grants with the final amounts coming through early this financial year. She sourced £5,000 from a Local Charitable Trust; £9,000 from the Lottery Fund; £3,000 from the Parish Council and £300 from Higos Insurance Services Ltd to 80 towards the fencing, new play equipment and the purchase of another storage container for the Scouts to use jointly with the Carnival. The Scouts gave £1,000 towards the cost of the container. The Treasurer has increased our Reserve Fund by a further £5,000 to ensure we have approximately a yearfs funds ring fenced. Due to a rise in gas and electricity costs over the year, a small increase to the charge paid by hirers was applied but this is still subsidised by the revenue from the solar panels. As in previous years the 2023 Carnlval was our biggest fund raising occasion. generating a total of £3,726.00 to our funds. Under the direction of Ed Powell, who took on the role of Carnival Chairman earlier in the year, the Committee delivered an excellent event despite some very challenging weather conditions. High winds severely tested the tents and marquees but did not dent the enthusiasm of those attending. The bar, which for many years has been set up and operated by members of the committee, was passed over to the very capable hands of Damon

Brooke, releasing valuable time for Committee Members and volunteers to run other aspects of the event. Shrubs were planted in the meadow area of the Diamond Jubilee Wood to create further biodiversity with members of the Reimagining the Levels Tree Group helping with the planting. New hedging has been planted at the top of the wood along the track to the farm. Volunteers were involved in a daunting dock removing session. In a section of the meadow area the ground was prepared and sown in an effort to establish a wildflower meadow. th A very enjoyable event was organised to celebrate the Kin¢s Coronation on the 6 May 2023. There was a live stream of the evening concert at Windsor Castle into the Village Hall with guests bringing their own picnic to eat while enjoying the event. The Village Hall has pretty much run at full capacity this year. We are proud of the variety of regular activities on offer to our communlty. These are:_ Barton St David Pre-school Barton St David Scout Group- Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. Children's Yoga Barton St David History Club Keinton Mandeville and District Women's Institute Pilates Barton St David Table Tennis The Hall can be booked for private events at the weekends. There follows a summary provided by each of our regular users. Barton St Davld Pre-school Our children have enjoyed learnlng Inside the Village Hall with its new Ilghtlng and decoration and in the lovely outdoor space. The adjacent recreation ground is always a major highlight with such a large safe play space. Over the year we have vlsited the church {together with parents collecting food donations for Glastonbury food bank), the Diamond Jubilee Wood and stream - such wonderful places to explore and learn. We would like to thank the Parish Council, the Village Hall Committee and Peter for all their terrific support over the year. Barton St Davld Scout Group A real high was the joint work with the hall committee to get some dry and rodent free storage. This has made an immeasurable difference to everyone in our group. Leaders know that the equipment stored there will emerge in the same condition as when it was returned. This means preparation for camps is much quicker and, given that Leaders have so much to do to arrange any camp, it is a real bonus for us all. The (half of a) container has also given us confidence to apply for a range of grants and we have now updated our tents, camp kitchen facilities and shelters. This will mean that we will never repeat the depressing incident of having to send one group home because their 30 year old tent was leaking. Our young people numbers are steady and the range of activities they enjoy is incredible, making

memories that they won't forget. We have run many sessions in the hall from first aid, map work and photography to games and crafts. This groundwork in the hall enables all ages to stretch their comfort zones. Explorers have done another London Monopoly Run (just like the board game but at speed in real life), camps and D of E work. Scouts have done an activity camp, hikes and letterboxing on Dartmoor, shooting and caving. Cubs have done a camp, box car racing, hikes and caving. Beavers went to see new lambs on a farm and have done hikes, first aid and much more. Barton St Davld Hlstory Club Thanks to the efforts of our Steering Group and the support of the Vlllage Hall Committee 2023-24 has proved to be another good year for the club. The meetings are open to all for a small fee on the door, and our paid-up members now number over 50, with attendances at the ten meetings held during the year averaging around 40. We have enjoyed talks covering a wide range of topics and reports of all the meetings can be read on the History Club section of the BStD website. A chance to socialise with the speakers and each other over refreshments after the talks is always popular and is a very important part of the club's role in the village community- evidenced by the fact that at our Chrlstmas event a collection raised over £100 for a local food bank. Kelnton Mandevllle and Dlstrlrt Women's Instltute Our group of Ladies consists of around 20 members and we find Barton St David Village Hall is the perfect slze for our meeting5. It is spacious enough for our more active meetings but also small enough to be ideal when we are listening to a speaker. The bullt- in projector and screen are reallv helpful and the car park is ideal and plenty big enough for our membership. We have met at the Hall ten times during the year and most of our meetings involve interestlng, Invited speakers, We recently had a professional singing instrurtor come to help us Improve our musical voices and have enjoyed line dancing. The hall opens out Into a lovely lawn so we can enjoy an outdoor picnic in the summer months. The W.1. Committee members also reserved a table for the evenlng of the King's Coronation. The Hall was really nicely decorated to celebrate the event and we enjoyed the live streaming of the evening festivities. a lovely community get together and much comfier that standing in the Pllates Lena continued to run her classes 3 times a week in the hall, with an average of 45 people attending each week. The daytime classes proved most popular with the evening classes dropping from two to one sesslon per week. The new Seated Pilates class on Frlday mornings has proved quite popular and has now established steady nurnbers. Barton St Davld Frlday Afternoon Table Tennls We began our 6th year of playing table tennis in the Village Hall on April 21st 2023. Our sessions run for two hours each Friday, stopping for homemade refreshments at half time. This year we played for 35 weeks up to March 22nd 2024 with breaks in between for some school half terms. school summer holidays, Christmas and Easter. There have been a few cancellations of play during the year to allow for special hall bookings on Fridays and hall maintenance. We have 20 people registered with us and have anything between 4 to 14 players who regularly attend. Competition is rife amongst many players but play is amicably enjoyed by all, exercise and laughter being our priority! Since the departure of Pre-school we have the use of more hall area and more

convenient table storage space too, which is very welcome. Also, it will be nice to make use of the now available wall display area for photos. The Playing Field is regularly used by Cary Valley Croquet Club, by village croquet players and the Tennis Club. They report as follow5:_ Cary Valley Croquet Club, who came to us from Lytes Cary after Covid, play most Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. They are a formal club and play dressed in "whites" Very enthusiastic, thev have been known to have sixteen players turn up to play. Village Croquet There is an informal session for villagers on Tuesday afternoons. we do not dress up and there are 6 to 8 regular players. If you wish to have a go, just turn up at 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon; £2 per person per session but a newcomer can have a free trial. Equipment is provided. Depending on the weather, we are generally able to start in late March and continue as late as early November in good autumn. Barton St Davld Tennls Club The Barton St David Tennis Club (chaired by Duncan Forbes) is run by Nicky Wheeler {Bookings) and Rosalie Odgers (Treasurer and Membership). Early this year the court wa5 treated to remove any moss. The membershlp numbers of the Club have remained steady this year with 24 subscriptions in total: 15 family (residing in Barton), 7 family {residing outside the village), and 2 individual members. Membership fees have not been increased - Family membership costs £45.00 pa for residents of the village, and £50.00 pa for families living outside the village. Individual membership is £30.00 pa for members within the village. Junior members are charged at £12.00 pa (within the village) and £15.00 pa (outside the village) - sadly we have no junior members at present. During the past flnancial year membership fees amounted to £1085.00 of which £500.00 was paid to the Village Hall. The Village Hall Committee continue to work hard to ensure the Village Hall, Playin8 Fields and Dlamond Jubilee Wood remain attractive assets for the benefit of the villagers of Barton.
