Tackley Village Memorial Hall Chairman’s Report 2023
We have had a busy year: the football club and the Drama School run regularly, as do Scouts, WI, the various Tackley clubs and, as a new venture, the pop-up pub in response to the closure of the Gardiner’s Arms. We have also had enquiries from an outside club about using the Hall for Pickle Ball. The Tackley Village Memorial Hall has hosted many other events. We hope that, with the return to normality, these have given everyone in Tackley the opportunity to meet and enjoy the activities that are so much part of Tackley Village life.
To start with finance, we have had good income from the solar panels, but the application date for registering the ground source heat pump for feed-in has lapsed. We are, however, still able to heat the Hall and the Shop from the ground source heat pump.
We were pleased to be able to continue to rent out the coffee shop for use by the Community Shop; the extra space has made a very attractive and useful addition, has helped them, and given us some steady income too.
The pop-up pub, now operating regularly on Fridays as well as over the Christmas period, has been a fantastic addition to village life. Thanks go to all the organisers and helpers for making this happen – it is great to see the Hall used in this way, bringing people together for the usual pub activities as well as filling the gap left by the closure of the Gardiner’s Arms. We look forward to continuing with this for the foreseeable future.
We have had a busy year with maintenance and refurbishment. The fire alarms are tested regularly, we have had the ground source heat pump checked out (the first time since it’s installation) and various plumbing and electrical issues seen to, including the oven, which was a fairly vital bit of maintenance! Thanks to Graham Agutter and Julie Farren for their help with parts replacement.
Our major expense was the installation of an AV system in the Hall, with a hearing loop and screen and sound system. We have had some teething issues with operating the equipment, but thanks to Julien for sorting out the instructions, it now seems to do the job (and the cost was £10k cheaper than the next most competitive one!).
We have bought a new set of matching plates for the kitchen, a new kettle and some glasses for the kitchen, as well as the paint for the outside of the Hall. The Tackley Football team have generously undertaken to paint for us and we are waiting for better weather in the spring. We would like to consider painting the Hall roof at some stage.
Most recently there have been suggestions about how to deal with access to the disabled toilet in the coffee shop, which was initially installed as part of the playground update programme some while ago. Watch this space!
In conclusion, I want to thank all our committee members, without whom this Hall could not function. In particular:
- I record my thanks to Robert, our Treasurer, who stepped in as Treasurer at the 2023 AGM, and has got to grips with sorting out the finances and has been a great help in all matters financial.

-
To Julien, our Secretary, who has likewise stepped into the position and has been instrumental in driving many of the improvements in the Hall.
-
To Julie, our Booking Clerk, I can only repeat what I have said in all my previous reports - you are invaluable and a special thank you from me for all that you do above and beyond the call of duty. We would be lost without you!
-
To Pat, who keeps an eye on all things housekeeping, Sue as History Group rep, Vi as Methodist Representative and Roxanna and Sharon, who participate enthusiastically in our meetings.
-
Welcome to Julie Farren who joined the Committee as Craft Club representative and has taken on many maintenance and liaison tasks, most notably with the pop-up pub.
Outside the Committee, Mary McIntyre continues to support us as a community service by the wonderful work she does through communication, advertising and the Tackley Calendar, profits of which go to TVMH. Thanks to her for her interest in the Hall. Thanks also to Martin Edwards for the work he does with the web page and the Newsletter.
I look forward to seeing what transpires for the Hall in the year ahead, and I thank each and every committee member for their support this year.
