Group Chair's Welcome and Annual Rèport 2022-2023
Welcome to this AGM and thank you for attending. Welcome to our guests from the
Church and District.
Time flies and here we are reflecting on the last 12 months of Scouting in 7, Malden.
It's been another great year with lots of activities for our children, in particular, here
in thi5 hall and the garden. I was reflecting on how fortunate we are to have the hall
and garden. It provide5 US with income frorn hire5 as well a5 being the base for Scout
meetings. It's a social venue, dante hall, plate to learn, play games, make
friends...the list is endless. So thanks to everyone that helped at the work party in
April. We cleared gutters, cleared the sideway, attacked the weeds and sorted junk
from the garage. Its very satisfying to take a load of junk to the tip. We've got more
jobs to do around the hall and more junk to get rid of so we'll arrange another work
party in the summer. Watch out for emai15 please.
Surnmer Scout carnp is fast approachin8. Thanks to our Leader5 for organi5ing all the
camps. l arn once again joining my son ON carnp for a few days. As I said, time flie5
and for me its important share some of these experiences with my son before he
becomes just too cool to hang out with his dad. I would recommend to everyone that
they grab these opportunities. Indeed, camps are open to family members so speak
to the Leaders to find out how you can join in. Why not come along and trv
something different.
Our volunteer Leaders offer excellent Scouting to our young people. They tirelessly
provide activities for our children to experience and learn from. On behalf of all the
parents and 8uardians. thank you Leaders for your commitment. I'm goin8 to call
them out by name. Beavers.. Richard, Danny, Lucinda, Layla and Fan. Cubs.. Tom and
lan. Scouts- Bhavith, Nathan, Helen and Fan. Of course Peter is our Group Leader.
A5 always, thank you to the Executive Cornrnittee members supporting the Leaders in
overseeing the running of the Group and the hall. This year the Group has not
escaped the cost of living prices rises. Whi15t the cost of rnaterials needed for
rneetings and camps and the cost of electricity and ga5 go up, it 15 our aim to ensure
keep the cost of participatr.ng in Scouting stays flat wherever possible.
The Group only thrives due to its volunteers. You don't have to be a leader. If you can
help flip some burgers this afternoon that would be great. It would help immensely if

you could spare an hour or two, every now and then, to cut the grass or take some
junk to the tip.
That's enough from me. I hope you enjtsy the BBQ and activities after the AGM.
Rules for the conduct of Scout Group AGMS are established by Scout Association. This
meeting will include the Exec & Leaders reports and election of Exec members for
oming year.
Many thank5
Matthew Wheeler. Gmup Chalr

Beaver Colony Annual Rèport 2022-2023
The Colony ha5 been running at full capacity all year and for every Beaver who
attends there is another on the waitsng list itching to get in. Many are joining the
waiting list on recommendation of an existing member which has to be a good sign.
In the course of the year Beavers were awarded a total of 270 badges, among them 5
Chief Scouts Bronze Awards Ithe best badge you can get in Beaversl achieved by Alice,
151a, Ann, Abram, and Izzy.
Alongside having103ds of fun Beavers have participated in.. soft archery, wide games,
gardening, camp craft, sports, exploring, lego challenge, scout values, communicator,
marshmallow spiders, circus skills, space, experiments. Chinese new year, safety.
pancake day, health & fitness. marshmallow towers, faith badge. global issues
Irecyclingl.
Sleepovers at Walton Firs Activity Centre near Cobham in Spring and Autumn were
extrernely popular with 19 attending in Autumn and 15 in Spring.
The Beaver sectson is normally swamped with 3 range of actrvities run by District
(Panto, Explorer Oay, Science Day. Sleepover), but these have not resumed post
COVID.
l am immensely grateful to the team of leader5 whose able Support and enthusiasm
have made running the Colony such a pleasure this year. Sadly Sally Berlemont has
been forced to Stop attending due to pressure of work but Lucinda Cooper has been
joined by Grant Sidwell, Richard Kirk, and Danny Finn. Richard has 50 enjoyed helping
that he has been moved to set up his own Colony at 8errylands Scout Group.
Jack Zhou has been replaced by Luke Thompson as Young Leader and is proving a
valuable member of the team.

Cub Pack Annual Report 2022-2023
The Cub Pack has run below full capacity for muth of the year and Continues to do so.
This is due to a lack of regular adult helpers. At one point Pack numbers were
increased when Nick Tomassi joined the team but he failed to persist in the role.
There are currently 33 in the Pack with 30 of Cub age ON the waiting list.
io

In the course of the year Cub5 were awarded a totsl of 326 badges, among them Chief
Scouts Silver Awards to Ewan and Keira.
Alongside havin8103ds of fun Cubs have participated in.. St Geoge's Oay & scout
values. wide game. archery with recurve bows, camp skills. fire lighting, air rifle
shootin& pioneering, navigation skills, a hike. athletics, backwoods cooking, water
games. team leading, sports, home skills, emergency aid. treasure hunt. circus skills,
community, kendo la martial artl, knots, ballista, astrology, pancakes, healthy eating,
faith badge, junk modelling
Cub5 have enjoyed a 2-night Pack holiday indoors at Walton Fir5 in the autumn. Senior
Cubs also had a 2-night camp in tents in early May. A 3-night camp at Tolmers near
Potters Bar clashed with the Platinum Jubilee and was cancelled due to lack of
support.
Similar to the Beavers, there has not been the usual round of Cubs District events
since COVID.
We have been delighted that Holly Thornpson, a Young Leader, ha5 continued to help
regularly at Cubs even after completing her Duke of Edinburgh award volunteerine.
She is greatly valued as a member of the team. Despite encouragement. our other
young leader, Ben Welch, could not be persuaded to persist in the same wav.

Stout Troop Annual Report 2022-2023
Since our last AGM the number within the troop has 32 scouts on the books with S
patrols and between 20 & 25 coming on a weekly basis.
The troop has had a strong & steady leadership team since 2019 Imyself, Peter &
Nathan). We have also had Fan & Helen join the troop a5 uniformed leaders & I would
like to welcome them to the leadership team.
We have had a varied programme over the past year or so,. as we have had a number
of activities based in and out of the scout hall.
During the autumn term, the troop were working towards their challenge badges.
Some of the activities that we had done during our weekly meetings included Archery,
Emergency aid, Robot Wars and a wide game.
li

An Autumn camp was organi5ed for November 2022. 1 feel that the carnp was a
5UCCe55 as all those who attended the camp and had 3n enjoyable & positive
experience.
During the spring term our programme included activities such as climbing.
navigation, disability awareness and cooking. A one night camp to Polyapes was
organised for scouts to practice their stealth skills/put them onto practice on Oxshott
Heath.
During the summer terrn, we had gone to Dartmoor during the weekend of the Kin8$
Coronation with some of the older scouts for a remote camp Iwhich wa5 a 5ucce55ful
tripl and had spent some meetings to prepare for this. For scouts not attending
remote camp. we had run a meeting for those not attending remote camp.
A summer camp is also being organised for the first week of the school summer
holidays, which will be a 7-day camp in the Peak District
District events are organised and promoted for all members of the troop to attend
and are planned into the programme when adverhsed.
Over the weekend of 18119 March,. county had oreanised a night exercise at
Boidierhurst Scout Campsite. We had one competitive team entered Iwho came 12th
in the event)
The air rifle club also held a competition in May, which took place over the weekend
of 20121 May which some sCOUt5 participated in and l am proud to say we came 1st in
the novice (under 1251 category.
With regards to participation in both events l am proud of everyone that took part in
both events and feel that participants should be proud of themselves in taking part
Finally, I would like to give thanks to the leadership team (current & newl, as without

Relations with the Church remain good but it is immensely frustrating that the Scout

Group Scout Leader's Annual Report 2022-2023
The Group is in robust good health and, as you will have heard from preceding
reports. providing excellent Scouting experiences to our Young People.
An increasing number of adults are getting involved in supporting delivering camps
and meetings and hopefully hnding that being involved as an adult is great fun, as
well a5 being sociable, rewarding and worthwhile.
I have been especially pleased to welcome Danny and Fan to the Leadership Team in
Beavers, as well as Fan and Helen to the Leadership Team in Scouts.
As mentioned, the number of people participating in the recent working party was
also hugely encouraging. You will not be surprised to hear that we intend to build on
this success with future opportunitie51
It 15 great to be supported by such an enthusiastic Scout Group Executive. My
personal thanks to them for all they do and for being such fun to work with.
The one nut we do not seem able to crack at the moment is èdding adults to the
Leadership Team in the Cub Section. You will have heard that numbers in Cubs are
being held down whilst we only have 2 regular helpers in addition to myself. The
Scout Association is taking steps to make it even more flexible, easy and enjoyable for
adults to get involved in Scouting. So if you think you Might be able to help in Cubs, or
on other ways around the Scout Group, please do have a chat with me or any
member of the Executt"ve or Leadership team.

Treasurer's Report- Scout Group Accounts 2022- 2023
During 2022123 we saw a healthy increase in Group Income as Sections and our
established hirers of the hall continue to run their regular sessions. However, we did
14

A significant Contribution to the Group Income is from the hire of the hall which is
booked up most nights with regular clubs and classes from local organisations. Also,
the Green Lane Nursery use the hall weekdays throughout the school term times.
Consequently, income from hall letting5 for this year was £34,453.50.
In addition to income from section activities and hall rental, we also were able to
successfully claim for Gift Aid on membership subscriptions and meant we received
£1,386.38 in Gift Aid this year and can now make regular claims moving forward.

supplies Christmas Trees to Schoo15 and Scout Groups in our area and donates 25% of
the proceeds of the sales to the Group. In December many of our parents and
children volunteered to sell the Christmas trees on 3 couple of Saturdays. Although it
was a bit chilly, everyone enjoyed getting involved and we ended up raising £649.02

Consolidated Group Expènditurè- £54,818.99
Group Expenditure increased in 202212023, but l am pleased to report that
approximately £20,000 of this is directly attributable to Group Meetings and Activities
as well as approximately £3,000 the purchase of new equipment to support these
activities.
As detailed in the Hall Fabric Report there were ongoing maintenance and regulatory
servicing costs which brought the costs for these activities to £883.19 including the
purchase of the lawn mower and 5trimmer.
The Uknlity costs this year, including cleaner costs, totalled £14.854.50. This is an
increase from last year 2021120221£10,385.021 as prices for all of these services have
been increasing over the last year. Contracts for Electricity supplies were renewed in
April and June 2022 and the current Gas contract runs until October 2023, so Gas
Prices were not be affected this year but will increase next. To help address these
increases, the Executive Committee have written to our regular hall hirers to advise
that we may have to introduce an Energy Levy of £2 per hour from the renewal of the
gas contrèct in October 2023.
We are also pleased to have been awarded a Neighbourhood Grant from the Council
the Group which enabled us to install and commission a defibrillator at the Scout Hut.
The cost of this equipment was £2,482 and we received a Grant of £2,200.
The Scout Group do not own the Green Lane Scout Hut,. it is the property of St. lame5
Church. We have an arrangement with the church whereby any profit5 generated
from the hire of the hall are shared equally between ourselve5 and St. James. Thi5
