Group Lead Volunteer’s Report

The Beaver and Cub and Scout reports say it all. Last year was successful with many awards being achieved. Camps and activities take place in all three sections, providing a high-quality balanced programme with plenty of challenges and adventure. The Group is sound in terms of material resources but still short of adult volunteers. The Group continues to provide scouting for more young people. Some steps have been taken this year to build a stronger community – thank you to everyone that has helped.

All that has been achieved is due to the untiring efforts of all those people, young and old, who continue to support the Group. ‘Thank You’ to you all! Andrew Wright

We had 8 new Beavers that joined and 9 Beavers that moved onto Cubs. Our Beavers have had a great time learning new skills, taking part in lots of activities, and earning badges and they are looking forward to doing much more this year!

Cubs

The Cubs had a very busy year during which much was achieved.

Autumn term gave the chance for Cubs to hike around the lakes at Rickmansworth. It was quite muddy and some Cubs ended up with wet feet. Participation in Jamboree on the Internet gave Cubs an opportunity to interact with Cubs all over the world. Cubs took part in the Harrow Remembrance Parade. A visit to the pantomime at Harrow Arts Centre got us all in the spirit of Christmas. The traditional Christmas party was enjoyed by all including a visit from Santa.

In the spring we started to look at how we could improve our understanding of the local community. This was followed by lighter picking in Kenton Recreation Ground. Cubs thoroughly enjoyed the District Traditional Games afternoon.

Following on from the traditional games, the Cubs took part in the District wide games. May camp at Phasels Wood concentrated on basic camp skills whilst enjoying the onsite activities like the Cresta Run. In June Cubs attended the Big Bounce at Horsenden Hill where they had tremendous fun on all the inflatables.

Two of the older Cubs took part in the second half of the Scouts summer camp at Gilwell Park.

A total of seventy-four badges were awarded in the year. This included two Chief Scout’s Silver Awards. Congratulations to Aaron, and Natalie.

This was a challenging year for the Pack. Without a Cub Scout Leader the help from parents was vital to allow a good programme to occur. However, together they kept strong and despite many difficulties along the way emerged as a stronger Pack.

The Pack would like to thank all those people – parents and supporters that have contributed to the success of the Pack in the last year.

Scouts

The last year has seen the Troop enjoy a high-quality balanced programme including plenty of activities and several camps.

The year started with a camp in September was at Tolmers as part of Mayflower District, Scouting America with Troop 184. October was busy with an expedition for the older scouts, participation in Jamboree on the Internet and a badge bonanza. November saw another badge bonanza and a smart turnout at the Harrow Remembrance Day parade. The term ended with a visit to the pantomime and the Christmas Adventure. \Scouts from 2nd/9th Ruislip joined us for the adventure around London including a ride on the mail rail at the Postal Museum and a scavenger hunt quiz at the British Museum.

In January Pawel and Rokas planned, organized, and delivered a leadership training weekend at Phasels Wood for scouts from 4th Harrow and 2nd/9th Ruislip. This included key leadership skills such as communication, vision, setting goals, planning, and making ethical and moral decisions. A hike in February involved the Scouts carrying food and cooking equipment so that a hot lunch could be served on the trail. A mystery hike in April ed us around unseen London using clues and riddles.

Preparation for summer camp involved a camp at PACCAR where Scouts learned and practiced basic skills such as tent pitching, cooking, wood tools, first aid and much more.

The highlight of the year was summer camp at Gilwell Park. Days out of camp took us to London Zoo at Rents Park where the Scouts explored the zoo whilst answering a scavenger-style quiz. Another day we hiked to the Royal Gunpowder Mills at Waltham Abbey where they built air-powered model rockets and launched them. They also explored the site that was used to produce armaments and explosives. Hiking in Epping Forest gave the Scouts the opportunity to demonstrate their navigation and mapwork skills. During the hike they also successfully found a couple of geocaches. Onsite the Scouts built coracles and rafts which they launched on the pond known as the Bomb Hole/ They also enjoyed archery and the 3G swing.

A total of eighty-two badges were awarded in the year.

The Troop continues to have excellent links with Troop 184 Scouting America and Scouting LBP Tilburg, Scouting Nederland.

This was an exciting year for all the Scouts, Leaders and parents. It has been a year of consolidation. The Troop would like to thank all those people – Patrol Leaders, Young Leader, Leaders and supporters that have contributed to the success of the Troop in the last year.

Trustee Board and Group Leadership Team

The main job of the Trustee Board is to support the Group Lead Volunteer with the running of the 4th Harrow Scout Group, which I am delighted to hear currently has lots of young people in each section. The Trustee Board makes sure the building is safe and well maintained, finances are in order and controlled properly, and promotes a good relationship with Toddle In nursery, Harrow Council and the other Scout Groups who use the building. The Trustee Board meets about once every half term (6 times a year) usually on a Thursday evening and we have vacancies, so please let me know if you would be interested to find out more, and you would be welcome to come along to observe a meeting first if you would like. I and other board members joined after we saw how much our children benefited from being part of 4th Harrow, learning outdoor and camping skills, craft skills, games, making great friends with children from different schools, developing their confidence, independence, and good citizenship. The awards such as Chief Scout’s, Jack Petchey and Duke of Edinburgh have helped with university and job applications.

The Group Leadership Team helps volunteers across all sections work well together and feel motivated. They make sure the Group is respected and supported in their local community. This team supports the Trustee Board in meeting their objectives.

I understand that lots of parents are busy with work and family commitments and have little time to spare, some people would feel that joining the Group Leadership Team or Trustee Board is not the best use of their skills. However, I would ask you to do whatever you can to strengthen and build up our 4th Harrow community, for example supporting the parent rota for your child’s section, arriving early when it is your turn to find out what the leader would like you to do, or offering your practical skills to help with building clean up, painting and gardening activities. If you are a tradesperson willing to assist, please do let Andrew know.

Finally, we are always keen to recruit parents to volunteer to help run one of the sections, currently the Beavers and Cubs need more leaders. All the adults involved running the sections and serving on the Trustee Board are volunteers.
