## **Group Scout Leader’s Report**

The Beaver and Cub and Scout reports say it all. Last year was successful with many awards being achieved. Camps and activities take place in all three sections, providing a high- q u a l i t y balanced programme with plenty of challenges and adventure. The Group is sound in terms of material resources but still short of adult volunteers. The Group continues to provide scouting for more young people. Some steps have been taken this year to build a stronger community – thank you to everyone that has helped.

All that has been achieved is due to the untiring efforts of all those people, young and old, who continue to support the Group. ‘Thank You’ to you all! Andrew Wright

## **Cubs**

The Cubs had a very busy year during which much was achieved.

The year started with a camp at Phasels Wood which saw the Cubs enjoying many of the onsite activities. A visit to the Royal Air Force Museum gave the Cubs a chance to work towards Air Activity badges. This was followed by an afternoon of air activities at the HQ. The traditional Christmas party was enjoyed by all including a visit from Santa.

We took a further look at how we could improve our understanding of sustainability and conservation. This was followed by lighter picking and tree planting.

4th Harrow Scout Group Annual Report Year Ended 31st August 2024

Cubs took part in the Harrow Remembrance Parade. Participation in Jamboree on the Internet gave the Cubs the chance to communicate with Scouts across the globe.

These two areas are within the World Challenge Award.

In April the Cubs enjoyed a day of activities at PACCAR scout camp which included laser tag. Group camp in June allowed the Cubs to camp with the Beavers and Scouts. It was good to see all three sections working together.

Other outdoor activities included hiking around the lakes at Rickmansworth, visiting the Science Museum.

A total of ninety-one badges were awarded in the year. This included three Chief Scout’s Silver Awards. Congratulations to Ashley, Kian, and Rebeka.

This was a challenging year for the Pack. Without a Cub Scout Leader the help from parents was vital to allow a good programme to occur. However, together they kept strong and despite many difficulties along the way emerged as a stronger Pack.

The Pack would like to thank all those people – parents and supporters that have contributed to the success of the Pack in the last year.

Andrew Wright

## **Scouts**

The last year has seen the Troop enjoy a high-quality balanced programme including plenty of activities and several camps.

The year started with a visit to the Tui engineering facility at Luton Airport for our annual planning meeting. The scouts enjoyed a tour of some of the aircraft that were in for maintenance before lunch followed by the Troop Forum. Autumn camp in October was at Phasels Wood. A sleepover in November at the HQ was followed by a Cluedo style wide game in London in December.

Spring term started with a mystery hike in London. The scouts enjoyed ice skating at Queensway. Transatlantic Council’s Normandy Camporee in April together with Troops 184, 301 and 18 from Ohio was amazing, camping on the cliffs above Omaha Beach, campfire on the beach, and visits to museums. It concluded with a moving ceremony at the cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer where nearly 10,000 are buried.

Scouts Trash the Trash Day was the first outdoor event of summer term. The Group camp in June was spent learning team building skills in preparation for summer camp. The scouts took part in several hikes to practice their navigation skills and walking fitness ready for the hikes in Belgium.

The highlight of the year was summer camp at Ypres in Belgium for which we were joined by scouts and leaders from 2nd/9th Ruislip. We visited several World War One, British, Canadian, and German. We were the guard at the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate, Rokas gave the exhortation. The scouts enjoyed the theme park at Bellewaerde, the chocolate and fries museums at Bruges. The visit to the In Flanders Fields Museum brought a tear to the eye, as did laying a cross at the Sanctuary Wood cemetery on behalf of a lady that we met at the Menin Gate. Trench systems at the Yorkshire Trench and Sanctuary Wood gave the scouts a feel for what it would have been like to have served in the first World War. The week finished on a high with a bagpipe show at the building that we stayed at.

4th Harrow Scout Group Annual Report Year Ended 31st August 2024

Two Chief Scout’s Gold Awards were achieved, congratulations to Josh and Leo.

The Troop continues to have excellent links with Troop 184 Scouting America, Scouting LBP Tilburg, Scouting Nederland.

This was an exciting year for all the Scouts, Leaders and parents. It has been a year of consolidation. The Troop would like to thank all those people – Patrol Leaders, Young Leader, Leaders and supporters that have contributed to the success of the Troop in the last year.

## **Trustee Board**

The main job of the Trustee Board is to support the Group Scout Leader with the running of the 4th Harrow Scout Group, which I am delighted to hear currently has lots of young people in each section. The Trustee Board makes sure the building is safe and well maintained, finances are in order and controlled properly, and promotes a good relationship with Toddle In nursery, Harrow Council and the other Scout Groups who use the building. The Trustee Board meets about once every half term (6 times a year) usually on a Thursday evening and we have vacancies, so please let me know if you would be interested to find out more, and you would be welcome to come along to observe a meeting first if you would like. I and other committee members joined after we saw how much our children benefited from being part of 4th Harrow, learning outdoor and camping skills, craft skills, games, making great friends with children from different schools, developing their confidence, independence and good citizenship. The awards such as Chief Scout’s, Jack Petchey and Duke of Edinburgh have helped with university and job applications.

I understand that lots of parents are busy with work and family commitments and have little time to spare, some people would feel that joining the executive committee is not the best use of their skills. However, I would ask you to do whatever you can to strengthen and build up our 4th Harrow community, for example supporting the parent rota for your child’s section, arriving early when it is your turn to find out what the leader would like you to do, or offering your practical skills to help with building clean up, painting and gardening activities. If you are a tradesperson willing to assist, please do let Andrew know.

Finally, we are always keen to recruit parents to volunteer to help run one of the sections, currently the Beavers and Cubs need more leaders. All the adults involved running the sections and serving on the Trustee Board are volunteers.
