4th Harrow Scout Group Annual Report Year Ended 31st August 2021

Group Scout Leader’s Report

The Beaver and Cub and Scout reports say it all. Last year was a successful despite all the difficulties that the pandemic could put in our way. Sections continued with virtual Scouting, Zoom sessions, challenges by WhatsApp and email. It was interesting to see the different approaches. The spring term saw a gentle return to face-to face Scouting. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are prepared for the year ahead.

It is pleasing to see that all sections are continuing to provide a high quality balanced programme with plenty of challenge and adventure. The Group is sound in terms of resources. The Group is growing and the next steps will be taken this year – I hope that everyone will help when asked.

All that has been achieved is due to the untiring efforts of all those people, young and old, who continue to support the Group. ‘Thank You’ to you all! Andrew Wright

Beavers

At the beginning of this year we were able to offer a blended programme of face-to-face (outdoors only) and virtual meetings for our Beavers until December 2020. As you know we moved into lockdown again and offered the Beavers a continued blended programme of virtual meetings and challenges set on alternative weeks. We were then able to move to face-to-face meetings again from April 2021. During this time the Beavers have taken part in lots of activities which include:

Key (v) = virtual (f) = face-to-face

The Beavers were also able to take part in following activities:

Our Beavers have had a great time learning new skills, taking part in lots of activities, and earning badges and they are looking forward to doing much more this year! Louise Woutersz

Cubs

The Cubs had a very busy year during which, despite restrictions, much was achieved.

Autumn term was spent meeting outdoors and virtual activity sessions. This involved fire lighting, cooking marshmallows and keeping fit. November saw the Cubs hiking around Rickmansworth

lakes which was great fun!

Spring term was filled with meetings and activities on Zoom. During this time Scouts were making slow and steady progress towards awards.

April brought a relaxation of restrictions and the Cubs were joined by the Beavers for a day of activities at PACCAR Scout Camp. They enjoyed the adventure course, pedal karts, and zip line. In May Cubs revisited Rickmansworth lakes as they had such a good time in November. Ruislip Lido was the location for the July hike and games afternoon. They played on the beach and saw the miniature railway.

The Cubs joined the Scouts for two days and one night camping with the Scouts at Phasels Wood in August. They enjoyed backwoods cooking, climbing, games and pedal karts. For many Cubs this was their first camp and they all did very well. They had remembered most of what they had leaned in the previous months.

This was a challenging year for the Pack. Without a Cub Scout Leader the help from parents was vital to allow a good programme to occur. However, together they kept strong and despite many difficulties along the way emerged as a stronger Pack.

The Pack would like to thank all those people – parents and supporters that have contributed to the success of the Pack in the last year.

Scouts

The last year has seen the Troop enjoy a high quality balanced programme including plenty of activities and a few camps. Much of this was achieved during lockdown.

The year started with activities outside at the HQ; fire lighting and cooking. Scouts took part in a clean-up at Newton Farm Ecology Park. October saw the Scouts participating in a group virtual camp and taking part in Jamboree on the Internet. They made contact with Scouts from all over the world. Troop meetings in November were still outside involving cooking, pioneering and scouting skills. Throughout the term virtual activities included baking and skills challenges.

Spring term was filled with meetings and activities on Zoom. During this time Scouts were making slow and steady progress towards awards.

Summer term saw a relaxation in restrictions and outdoor activities started with an urban hike around a number of cemeteries visiting the graves of famous people including Brunel and Rosalind Franklin. For sapling planting at Stanmore Common in May we were joined by Scouts from Troop 184 and Venturers from Crew 184. This was followed by a litter pick. In June the Scouts took full advantage of the great outdoors with orienteering at Black Park, geocaching in Ruislip Woods and a visit to the Royal Air Force museum at Hendon. Three hikes were held in July; two in London and one alongside the Grand Union Canal.

Having missed summer camp in 2020, the Scouts were keen to have a summer camp in 2021. At short notice a highly successful saw us camping at Phasels Wood for a week. The Scouts had a great time with onsite activities such as climbing and pedal karts. Off site activities included geocaching, hiking and snowboarding at Hemel Hempstead. During the camp the Cubs came for two days staying overnight and the Beavers visited for a day.

The Troop continues to have excellent links with Troop 184, BSA and Scouting LBP Tilburg, Scouting Nederland.

This was a challenging year for all the Scouts, Leaders and parents. However, together they kept strong and despite many difficulties along the way emerged as a stronger Troop. The Troop would like to thank all those people – Patrol Leaders, Leaders and supporters that have contributed to the success of the Troop in the last year.

Group Executive

The 4th Harrow Group Executive Committee continues to meet regularly (at least termly) to support the Group Scout Leader with the responsibilities of running the Group, which has been particularly challenging due to the pandemic. Currently on the committee there are three people with children who are now young adults who enjoyed many years of scouting with 4th Harrow (Vincenzo, Anita, and Margaret) along with a former leader (Linda Lawrence), a leader of one of the external scout groups that use the building (Linda Brown), and a young adult (Liam). It would be useful to have some parents of current Beavers, Cubs and Scouts on the Executive.

The committee has focused over the last year on work to improve the fabric of the building and putting in place robust systems for maintenance and repair.
