Group Scout Leader’s Report
The Beaver and Cub and Scout reports say it all. Last year was a successful and busy year with plenty of achievements until the pandemic struck. Sections moved to virtual Scouting, Zoom sessions, challenges by WhatsApp and email. It was interesting to see the different approaches. The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are prepared for the year ahead.
It is pleasing to see that all sections are continuing to provide a high quality balanced programme with plenty of challenge and adventure. The Group is sound in terms of resources. Looking forward, the Group has started to develop and the next steps will be taken this year – I hope that everyone will help when asked.
Nayan stood down after leading the Cubs for a year. Penny also left the Cubs after many years of faithful service. We would like to say a huge thank you to them for all that they have contributed to the Pack.
All that has been achieved is due to the untiring efforts of all those people, young and old, who continue to support the Group. ‘Thank You’ to you all! Andrew Wright

Cubs
The Cubs had a very busy year, kicking off with the Group Family Christmas Meal in December. You may remember that the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts invited their families to a three course meal, served by the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. The Cubs were in charge of dessert, and prepared approx. 100 portions of apple crumble. We would say that this was the best course, but of course we’re biased!
Hot on the heels of Christmas came Winter camp at Well End. The Cubs made (and attempted to fly) kites. This was a great activity, combining the knots the Cubs had learnt with sewing skills. The Cubs also took part in air rifle shooting, and prepared pizzas for everyone. Our Cubs took on roles at camp – for instance, during exploring in the woods, we had a nominated first aider, and this system worked very well.
In March, the Cubs attended a District activity, which was a trip to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. The Cubs, along with about 60 others from other Harrow Cub Packs, had a great time at the Observatory. The planetarium was amazing, the Cubs were aghast at the beautiful display of our solar system. The Cubs also took the opportunity to visit and stand on the prime meridian line, straddling the eastern and western hemispheres.

Next came an online meeting with Headstone Manor Museum, where the Cubs learnt about the history of Harrow. There were quizzes and many interesting facts about Harrow – who knew that, not only did Mrs Beeton live in Harrow, but that she was the first to write recipes as we know them today, with a list of ingredients! Nayan and Penny Joshi
Scouts
The last year has seen the Troop enjoy a high quality balanced programme including plenty of activities and camps.
We began our year joining Scouts from America at their Fall Camporee for fun and challenging activities based on ‘Case of the Missing Camporee’ at PACCAR. This was a patrol activity based on the game Clue. Aliyah won the award for the Scout that most demonstrated scout spirit. October saw the Scouts hiking and taking part in Jamboree on the Internet. They made contact with Scouts from all over the world. November saw us join other youth groups in Harrow in the civic remembrance parade. In December some of the Scouts took part in the local park run.
The annual mystery hike took place in January in central London. We explored many hidden treasures ably led by Matt Johnson from Troop 184. Group camp at the end of January at Well End was an opportunity for many outdoor activities including orienteering, pioneering and wide games. The Scouts undertook a hike in February. March came and brought a pandemic. We were quick to move our meetings to Zoom.
Virtual camps were held in April, May and June. These involved some Scouts camping in their garden whilst others made dens in their homes. Some of the Scouts took part in the special edition Jamboree on the Internet in April. Throughout the summer term the Scouts had weekly meetings on Zoom, challenges from week to week and activity afternoons including cooking and games.
The Troop continues to have excellent links with Troop 184, BSA and Scouting LBP Tilburg, Scouting Nederland.
The Troop would like to thank all those people – Patrol Leaders, Leaders and supporters that have contributed to the success of the Troop in the last year. Andrew Wright
Group Executive
The 4th Harrow Group Executive Committee continues to meet regularly (at least termly) to support the Group Scout Leader with the responsibilities of running the Group, which has

been particularly challenging due to the pandemic. Currently on the committee there are three people with children who are now young adults who enjoyed many years of scouting with 4th Harrow (Vincenzo, Anita, and Margaret) along with a former leader (Linda Lawrence), a parent of a current Scout (Cath), a leader of one of the external scout groups that use the building (Linda Brown), and a young person (Liam) who used to help run the Explorers Unit on a Monday evening.
The committee has focused over the last year on work to improve the fabric of the building and putting in place systems for maintenance and repair, such as for the gas appliances and boilers. Vinyl flooring has been laid in the hall ways and front room, the outside area at the back of the building has been cleared, the Beaver store cupboard has been upgraded.
We have negotiated with Harrow Council who have agreed to get the London Plane Trees cut back which are causing damage, and we have arranged for a contactor to carry out work to replace guttering and repair the roof. These things should be happening in the near future.
A highlight is that 4th Harrow signage has been added to the outside of the building which will hopefully attract passers-by to enquire about joining the group, and we now have a letter box and address with Royal Mail. Liam has created a new 4th Harrow website which will continue to be developed.
The committee has also worked with the Toddle In Nursery to increase communication, and with Harrow Council in regard to their use of the site for parking council vehicles.
We would love to have two parents from each section (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts) on the committee so please do let us know if you might be interested. You would be welcome to come along to observe a meeting.
