## **EXECUTIVE SUMMARY**

After a tremendously testing year for our leaders and young people alike, I am pleased to announce that our numbers are still healthy, and this is completely due to the tireless efforts of our amazingly dedicated leadership team.

Going forward it looks increasingly as if we will be able to return to a scouting model much closer to the one we enjoyed before covid struck.

As always, a massive thank you to Chris and Ian who do so much behind the scenes to ensure we are able to offer all the things we do.

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that Jaivanti is retiring as Secretary to the 4[th] Enfield. She has been a tremendous asset to the exec and therefore the group. I cannot begin to imagine how hard it is to have to constantly nag our leaders, myself included, for reports and paperwork that is required to do the job, but she has managed it for many years, and not once have I seen her lose her temper!!!!

Thank you Jaivanti from the bottom of my heart, and when we finally hold our meetings face to face again you will be sorely missed. Thank you also for your help in welcoming Jo Eaton into the role and helping her with the transition.

Jo is a well-known face at the 4[th] and we are delighted to welcome her as secretary to the 4[th] Enfield Executive Committee.

Finally, congratulations to Tim Brooker, who has earned his Wood Badge. This involves undertaking courses and training that takes a lot of time, on top of the already time-consuming role of running the Beavers!

Well done Tim and well done to all the Leaders and helpers at the 4[th] .

John Rognaldsen (Group Scout Leader)

Well, it has been a very different year in scouting this year; however, it’s also been a very exciting one adapting to everything that has been happening.

## **Spring Term 2020:**

With our typical Burns nights and pancake days programmed in, we also looked at completing our disability awareness badge and community impact stage 1 and also our faith badge.

As everyone is aware, the Spring term was cut short with the start of Lockdown at the end of march.

## **Summer Term 2020:**

Typically Beavers spend their summer terms at Forty Hall, however due to covid Beavers were not meeting. Over the Easter break I made a badge booklet and sent that to parents so that even when we are not able to meet face to face, scouting can still be done. It was great having pictures sent over throughout the summer and summer holidays of beavers completing badge work.

## **Autumn Term 2020:**

Another mixed term was Autumn, It wasn’t many sessions before lockdown started again, our first few face to face meetings focused on building catapults writing letters and drawing pictures to send on to our local retirement home. But then lockdown happened again, but we did not stop, we continued on-line the following week. We did lots of different activities before Christmas. I think my favourite was getting all the beavers together in their kitchens and we all cooked pizzas together. We even managed to put badge work into our zoom meets looking at how scouting is different around the world.

This year has been a strange one for all the sections at the 4[th] Enfield and the cubs was no exception.

All the leaders were challenged for time with the impact of the pandemic on their working lives, so the decision was made to not run any online sessions for the cubs until after Christmas 2020.

Chris Dey temporarily stood back from his role as Akela to complete his MBA and focus on his council commitments and Jenny Thorp (Rikki) had a baby, so the weekly programme was planned and delivered by Andy Eaton (Bagheera), Mark Horsnell (Baloo) and Jade Gavin (Kaa).

We had 22 cubs on the role and had an average of 6 cubs attending the online meetings. We ran quiz nights, a drawing workshop, an origami night, pizza making and bingo to try to keep the cubs engaged to prepare them for when we came back to face to face meetings.

We started face to face meetings again from the 21[st] April 2021 in line with the scout association guidelines and focussed on outdoor activities as the nights were longer and lighter. The numbers attending the sessions starter to increase week by week. We started with a rounders match and had a couple of night hikes in Enfield finishing up at the scout hut. Our most popular event was the famous Chippy Hike where cubs visit a selection of chip shops and rate the chips on flavour and taste.

We took the cubs to the Trampoline Park, Jump In, which is always a hugely popular cub activity. We organised water safety night which was ran by Bob Brooker which was the pre curser to a night at ESSA where the cubs all took part in wobble boarding and had a fantastic time.

We are looking forward to planning our programme for the 21/22 year.

Numbers have been unsurprisingly affected by the requirement for us to move to online only activities over the last year or so. Our numbers are however looking healthier now we are back to face to face meetings.

Normally at this time we would be reporting all the impressive activities we have taken part in and regaling you with tales of camping and other fun and games. We haven’t had a night away yet as a scout group for approx. 2 years, but rest assured we intend to put that right as soon as possible now that we are allowed to.

We have however managed to undertake a few activities such as hiking, pedal carting and of course hiking.

Plans are afoot to get district events up and running again and we intend as a group to have an extremely fun packed year ahead of us.

## **4th Enfeld Scout Group Treasurer’s Report (2020)**

The financial position of the Group remains sound, with good reserves.

The Group General Fund recorded a surplus of £12486 against a smaller surplus of £1163 in 2019. This was mainly due to a £10000 government grant and a 2 year Gift Aid refund claim against the previous year.

Members’ subscriptions paid from the Sections totalled £3360 which is at a much lower level than in 2019 (£6315) due to the decision to suspend charging during the periods that we were unable to run meetings. We were able to do this with the help of a government grant recognising the pandemic impact to our charity. In addition, there were section contributions of £3101, against the activities expenditure of £4266. This is in line with our policy of using subs, grants, investment income and reserves to meet the majority of the expenditure, and additional charging for some activities to meet costs.

The Group paid £3520 Capitation fees, calculated at £45 per member towards central costs of the Scout Association. The share contributed by the Sections was again held constant at £15 per head, with the balance being met by the General Fund income.

General Fund net income for Group purposes amounted to £23551 up £2251 from 2019 largely due to a gift aid reclaim of 2 years covering 2019 and 2020, and from a government grant relating to the pandemic impact on the charity finances. Our outgoings for the premises and supporting the sections were covered by this income, so meeting our financial policy.

Running costs for the premises was slightly improved compared with the previous year, mainly due to the premises not being used as much due to the restrictions during Covid – the Playgroup did continue to operate for much of the time as a Key Service. Our water bill is now more stable at a lower level than 2019, now as the supplier has recovered underpayments and reset the yearly run rate usage.

The Scout Troop Contingency Fund (Dixon Bequest) generated income of £537 due to the financial markets significant reduction in interest rates (down from £680 in 2019 and year on year increases over the last 5 years from investments). There was no expenditure from the fund and the balance increased to £91,700 at the year end.

Income and expenditure of the Fred Hearn Bequest Fund, reserved for any major expense in the upkeep and improvement of the Headquarters building, showed a surplus of £7,870 (a marginally lower yearly surplus than in 2019). We have avoided using the fund since 2011 refurbishments, using general funds for the lower outlays. The balance of £67744, up from

£59,874 on Income and Expenditure for this fund (mainly from investment dividends) was carried forward to 2021.
