Dean informed everyone that although the evening was primarily about winning the Quiz Night(!), we did have to hold an annual AGM as part of the Group’s Constitution and that the AGM part of the evening would be very brief and deal with the ‘must-do’s’. He directed everyone to read The Green AGM Special which included his Chair’s Report and various other relevant reports so there was no need for these to be repeated.
Dean thanked everyone for what had been another excellent year for #1GSG, one particular highlight being the opening of our new Squirrel section which already had 12 new members being led by our new Squirrel Leader, Swati Shankar.
Dean the handed over to Michael who was running proceedings for the Quiz. The Quiz would run all evening, with parts of the AGM and Presentations held between rounds.

The Green
Issue 4: Summer 2022
Welcome…
Remembrance Parade
We had a fantastic turnout for the annual Remembrance Parade in November. Well done to every young person that attended!
…to another AGM edition of The Green. Is it really a whole year since we last got everyone together?
A lot has happened since then; Covid is still not quite a distant memory as we deal with new variants; fuel costs have rocketed and are now nearly 50% higher; food poverty is a new ‘buzz word’; the word Woke has come into meaning; and Boris has been ousted.
However, Scouting has continued to march on apace, and is even more popular now than ever before. Each week over 400,000 young people and 100,000 adult volunteers take part in Scouting projects and activities at the heart of the UK's communities, and we want to grow that even more. The introduction of Squirrels in September means that Scouting for young people now covers ages 4-25; the new Money Skills activity badge for Beavers and Cubs could prove useful in the current climate; and the continued collaboration with the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme has seen many more young people from Scouts, Explorers and Network gain the highest Gold Award.
Scouting is changing and adapting fast. We want to allow more Young People the opportunity to experience what we have to offer. But, we’re going to need your help to make that happen. So why not take up our 6- week challenge, volunteering is #goodforyou and you never know, you might enjoy it!
HAVE YOU CHECKED OSM TO MAKE SURE YOUR YOUNG PERSON’S DETAILS ARE UP TO DATE?

The Green - Issue 4: Summer 2022
Great Jerboa Achievement Award 2022
Here are the nominations, and a few words from our nominees...who will the winner be?
Ethan Shuff (Beaver)
Jack Holden (Scout)
Over the years we have witnessed amazing acts of kindness, teamwork and personal development that truly make you understand why people volunteer in all roles within the Scout Association.
An enthusiastic Beaver, Ethan welcomes new Kits to the Colony and helps them fit in with ease. He cares about what being a Beaver means, not only for our Group and Scouting, but in the community too. He was the driving force for our recent community litter pick, and encompasses all that a Beaver represents.
Over the last twelve months, it has been a pleasure to watch Jack growing into a caring and generous young adult who demonstrates their willingness to unselfishly help others.
We asked Ethan what does he like about being a Beaver? I like that I can go exploring with my friends. I like getting badges and the gardening badge was my favourite.
During lockdown, Jack grew his hair as he was sensible enough not to let his mother near a pair of scissors. Instead, he cut and donated his hair to the Princess Trust, which provides free ‘real hair’ wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions, and he raised over £1000 in sponsorship as well! In fact he donated enough hair to make three wigs.
Where did you get the idea for a litter pick Ethan? I wanted to help the environment. I wanted to do the litter pick with Beavers so that I could share that message with the group. Litter picking helps the environment, it stops animals getting hurt by the litter.
A call was recently put out within the Group for Young Leaders to help with the new Squirrel section, and it was Jack that stepped forward to become a building block for the Squirrels. They simply love him; looking up to him; hanging on his every word; and following the exceptional example of how a Scout should behave.
Baker Reade (Cub)
Our youngest Cub to achieve a Chief Scout Silver Award, Baker joined just as lockdown started but remained resilient throughout and determined to earn badges despite doing virtually via Zoom. His tireless enthusiasm for earning badges has kept the Leaders on their toes having to find innovative and creative ways of helping him achieve his love for a badge! Quite often he knows more than us what he needs to finish and always asks with his cheeky smile "does doing this mean I get this part of this badge?”
It must be remembered that not all heroes wear a cape – some wear a green shirt!
We asked Jack why he was a Scout? The reason I joined Scouting was for one reason; not because I was excited for the adventures or intrigued by the myriad of badges; It was because all my friends were going. But now I’ve been going for a few years I have realised the joy of Scouting. All the trips, the camps, and the annoying and hard to get badges. Also, by being a Scout, I have the great privilege of being a Young Leader at Squirrels. This means I get to see the next generation of Scouts grow. Anyway to wrap this up I would have to say that the reason you should join the Scouting community is because of the great friends and adventures you will meet and go on.
Baker represents what it is to be a Scout; forgiving occasionally forgetting his scarf, he is prepared for anything, helpful and kind natured to his fellow Cubs, and has natural leadership. No Cub has stood out quite like Baker, it makes us immensely proud to nominate him.
We asked Baker what he enjoys about Cubs? Cubs is a great place to meet new people and make new friends. I especially like the outdoor activities and meetings away from HQ where we play games and do den building. Camps are a big new experience where you get to try new things like grass sledging, man hunt in the dark and toasting marshmallows. I really enjoy collecting badges [you only need to look at his arm to see this is true!] as it has encouraged me to try new things and I am always proud to collect my badges from Akela. Collecting badges is one of my favourite hobbies.
Aidan Hawkes (Explorer)
Aidan has been nominated for his sheer determination to succeed at everything he tries. His recent Duke of Edinburgh Award overnight hike was a huge achievement for him. Despite his difficulties, he proved that anything can be overcome, completing the 2-day 30Km route with everyone else in his team.

Sections Update
After a lot of planning and preparation, Squirrels came to #1GSG on 28th Feb 2022 with 7 very enthusiastic young people. Squirrels is a brilliant platform for ages 4-6 to get introduced to Scouts. Like all other sections, Squirrels have a programme packed with outdoor activities, fun badge-work, games and lots of laughter. And most importantly learning to be the best friend they can be.
We have planted plants of kindness and given them to others to make them smile, decorated crowns and treasure boxes for the Jubilee, celebrated 4th July with cheerleading pompoms, played new games, tasted different foods, smelt things and felt things for a senses
We invested our first Squirrels in April, and numbers have now grown to 12! We also now have Bear who helps us as an excellent Young Leader.
We have our 1st Squirrel swimming up to Beavers this month.
Thanks to a generous donation by Lego, the Squirrels have had sessions of planning community living and expressing their creativity.

Sections Update
The question should not be what have the Beavers done in the past year, but in fact what have the Beavers NOT done in the past year? There has been a jam packed programme with lots of fun, interactive and dare we say educational activities.
Following Christmas, we returned for more fun. Skiing indoors, a cycling challenge, hunting for mini beasts, an Easter Egg hunt, had another camp at HQ in tents and had a go at Fencing. But the fun still didn’t stop there; we looked at our community and Environment and discussed what we could do for them; we built bird tables and feeders; undertook a local litter pick; celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee with cream tea for our grown-ups; blew things up in the HQ garden and learnt some really cool science tricks; and went on a fantastic evening hike to High Elms discovering some giant snails and other wildlife.
We have learnt about different disabilities and realised difficulties with certain impairments through interactive game play; sailed the seas as pirates and found the hidden treasure by following secret maps; built bridges and discovered what shape structures are the best to hold the most weight. We visited the local fire station and were able to put out ‘fires’, sit in the fire engine and learn about how the fire station works and the role of the fire fighters in the community. We had a sleepover at HQ and have been on parade with other local Groups. This was all before Christmas too!!
We have just visited Biggin Hill Airport to learn what it is like to pilot a light aircraft, and have an end of term water fight planned (wonder which Leader will stay dry!?)

Sections Update
A lot has happened since our last AGM. We finished off the Autumn term with an evening about UK Parliament Week, where the Cubs all voted for their favourite Leader; our Young Leader Ikki (aka John [or Pablo]) was the winner. We spent a couple of weeks looking at the moon and stars through Baloo’s telescope as well as completing some scientific experiments. The Term was rounded out with a joint hike with the Scouts, before the Cubs attended their first indoor camp for over a year at Wilberforce.
Spring sprung with Chinese New Year and saw the Cubs making a ‘Random Acts of Kindness Tree’. Another hike with the Scouts this time from St Giles Church meant another hike logged and more badges. A visit from a Kung Fu School proved to be really popular, with some of the Cubs going on to sign up for lessons. To celebrate Mother’s Day, the Cubs made cakes, and then decorated cups and plates before welcoming their mothers to the HQ to serve them tea and fresh cakes. We also squeezed in a trip to Frylands Wood for archery and tunnel trails.
Summer started with a Sixer/Seconder camp where each pair chose an activity badge to plan, prepare and then lead as part of our summer programme. This proved very successful with four activity badges achieved, fabulous teamwork and a great insight into the hard work behind leading and becoming ‘Akela’ for the night. The themes were Pioneering, Photography, Local Knowledge and International. We celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee with parents, went shelter building and tried out fencing. Oh, and we had a proper camp with Cubs from 27th Bromley! Almost 150 badges have been earned including four Chief Scout Silver awards and 40 Challenge Badges, demonstrating how committed and hard working our Cubs have been. Akela and Baloo remain so proud of all our Cubs.

Welcome to our Annual General Meeting
GSL’s Report
Another fantastic year of growth and success for #1GSG this year. Our numbers have increased, and we have been one of the first (and still only one of three) to open a new Squirrel section in the District. We really do have a fantastic team of both adults and young people, and it just reinforces the great resilience and support that Scouting and 1GSG are to our community. Well done all!
Once again, plenty of badges and awards have been given out; 12 Chief Scouts Awards, 852 activity badges, 32 new members to Scouting, it just shows how much has been going on.
We have welcomed lots of new Leaders in the past year to the Group; Swati in Squirrels, Billy and Rachel in Beavers, Abby in Cubs, Sarah in Scouts and Tiegan and Lewin in Explorers.
But, we still need more help, not only as Leaders, but also on our Group Executive and other behind the scene roles.. Can you help with organising fundraising activities or writing grant applications so that we can avoid raising our annual subs? How about putting some organisation skills to use and become our Group Executive Secretary? Or maybe you are a bit of a handy-person and could look after the maintenance at our HQ?
Finally, as always, I would like to thank each and every person who makes Scouting at #1GSG so strong. This year has again been exceptional and I continue to be amazed and humbled by the level of support that I have had to continue to make #1GSG a success; Leaders, Assistants, Young Leaders, parent helpers and Executive members. We all give so much for the benefit of our young people. So, thank you and I really do mean it. We are one team, we are #1GSG! Andrew
Chair’s Report
We have been back to normal for most of the last year with Section meetings resuming face-toface and even a few camps taking place.
The Group remains in a good financial position, and membership numbers are healthy, with the Group having an ever growing waiting list. It is clear that Scouting is still as popular as ever; probably even more. What we need is more adults to volunteer to enable us to open additional Sections and give more young people an opportunity that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We would appreciate anyone who could volunteer some time to assist with this, or indeed with the many behind the scene jobs that also need doing.
Although we have done a lot of work on the Scout hut it does still need a lot more. Once again, we are asking for parents to volunteer either time or resources to help us not only maintain the scout hut and grounds but to improve them.
As always, I would like to say that none of the Section meetings, camps and other activities happen with out the sacrifice of time, effort and planning of our Leaders, parent helpers and Young Leaders. I would like to say a massive thank you to each one of them. All of them are guided, assisted and motivated by our Group Leader, Andrew who has been instrumental in shaping the 1st Green Street Green Group to what it is today. Dean

Structure, Governance & Management
The Group's governing documents are those of The Scout Association. They consist of a Royal Charter, which in turn gives authority to the Bye Laws of the Association and The Policy, Organisation and Rules of The Scout Association. The Group is a trust established under its rules which are common to all Scouts. The Trustees are appointed in accordance with the Policy, Organisation and Rules of The Scout Association. The Group is managed by the Group Executive Committee, the members of which are the ‘Charity Trustees’ of the Scout Group which is an educational charity. As charity trustees they are responsible for complying with legislation applicable to charities. This includes the registration, keeping proper accounts and making returns to the Charity Commission as appropriate.
The Committee consists of three independent representatives; Chair, Treasurer and Secretary, together with the Group Scout Leader, individual Section Leaders (if opted to take on the responsibility) and parents representation and meets at least once per term. The Green - Issue 4: Summer 2022
Financial Review
Reserves Policy
The Group's policy on reserves is to hold sufficient resources to continue the charitable activities of the Group should income and fundraising activities fall short. The Group Executive Committee considers that the Group should hold a sum equivalent to 6 months running costs, circa £6,000.
Investment Policy
The Group's Income and Expenditure in a normal year is very small and as a consequence does not have sufficient funds to invest in longer-term investments such as stocks and shares. The Group has therefore adopted a low risk strategy to the investment of its funds. All funds are held in cash using only mainstream banks or building societies or The Scout Association's Short Term Investment Service.
The Treasurer regularly monitors the levels of bank balances and the interest rates received to ensure the Group obtains maximum value and income from its banking arrangements. Occasionally this may involve using an account that requires a period of notice before funds may be withdrawn, before doing so the Group Executive considers the cash flow requirements.
Treasurer’s Report
Our financial status for the year April 2021 to March 2022 is still pretty good considering all the improvements we were able to do to the HQ during the pandemic.
Although we used a large portion of our savings in The Hampshire Trust bank in order for those renovations to take place, thanks to another £14,650 in Covid related grants, our reserves are beginning to build up nicely again in order for the Group to start planning the next phase of HQ renovations sometime in the future.
Positions Vacant
The continued growth of #1GSG relies on new people volunteering to become Leaders. With 50+ Young People on our waiting list, we could easily open second groups of all sections! But we don’t only require frontline Leaders to help our Group grow, we also need heroes behind the scenes as well. We are looking to fill the following vacancies;
Fundraisers Grant Writer Secretary HQ Manager Maintenance Team Speak to our GSL or Chair if you can help out
The last of the current renovations took place in July 2021 during the summer break, where the old heating system was replaced plus new flooring was installed. I think you’ll agree how impressive the new flooring looks.
We are also back to hiring out the hall to various community groups, so adding to our renovations fund. Going forward from this, it would be great if someone would consider volunteering as a Fund Raising Manager, not only to help our reserves but also as a means to get to know and meet other parents and friends socially. With the present improvements to the headquarters, it would be excellent to see our asset being used to its full potential.
I should like to thank all parents for signing up to Gift Aid, which costs nothing to any of you, but gives plenty to us. We are able to claim 25% of the subscription payments that you make and have made £976 on this year’s payments alone. Pease ensure that you sign up on OSM when paying for your Young Person’s subscriptions if you haven’t already done so.
I would also urge you to make use of our fundraising agreements with Easy Fundraising and Amazon Smile plus Paypal Giving, again free donations will be made to the Group every time you shop through these channels.
A copy of the Financial Statement for the year 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2022 is attached at the end of this special AGM edition of The Green for your perusal. I am happy to receive queries and questions via email to treasurer@1stgsgscouts.org.uk
