  1. Alexandra Leroye Sakurai convened the meeting and welcomed members of the Trustee Board and guests. Apologies were noted.

  2. Approval of the 2022 Annual General Meeting minutes were unanimously approved.

  3. Governance oversight - Alexandra Leroye Sakurai explained that as a result of the Volunteering Transformation (a new initiative from the Scouting Association), the Trustee Board needed to adopt a Group Constitution. It was noted that this would be discussed further at the next Trustee Board meeting in September. In the meantime, the Group Executive Committee would now be refereed to as the Trustee Board.

  4. 4a. Alexandra Leroye Sakurai presented her Chair report and reviewed the work of all the sections over the last year, updating the attendees of the work of the Group. Chair’s Report Appendix (i) refers.

  5. 4b. Shelley Falcon presented the Treasurers report, reviewing group finances for the past year and anticipated future expenditure. The Trustee Board approved the accounts for the year to 31 March 2023.

The accounts were audited by Mr Peter Eastwood.

The Group’s bankers are CAF Bank Ltd.

5e. The election of Parent Representatives to the Trustee Board. There were no nominees standing.

Sarah-Jane Durman gave her personal thanks to the Trustee Board for their work over the past year and made her nominations for the Trustee Board.

Group Vice Chairman – Vacant

Chair of Site & Services Sub Committee – David Turner confirmed that he was formally stepping down, but would remain available to help until the end of the year. The Trustee Board thanked David Turner for all his hard work and support to the Group over the years.

Quartermaster – position currently vacant. Steven Lofting proposed by Joe Collier, seconded by Paul Musk and unanimously approved.

Sarah-Jane Durman agreed to write a further letter to parents/ carers advising them of the vacancies and the need for additional volunteers.

14[th] Bromley Scout Group

The membership of the group for the year ending 31[st] January 2023 (Annual Census) totalled 79, comprising of 57 young people and 22 leaders / Group Executive.

The key activities of the Trustee Board during the past 12 months: (Up to 31[st] March 2023)

This year has brought exciting developments to our Scout group.

With the Covid pandemic behind us, all groups have been able to meet again in person and all leaders have put in a lot of work running their sections and preparing for camps.

The group has been working toward opening a Squirrel section, for children from 4 to 6 years old. Elizabeth Bostock has taken on the role of Squirrel Scout leader and her work with other adult leaders enabled the successful launch of the Squirrel section in April 2023.

The group executive committee (now known as the Group Trustee Board) had two new members, Alexandra Leroye Sakurai (myself) has joined as the group Chair, and Liz Bostock has joined as the group Secretary as well as taking on her new role as Squirrel Scout leader. I take this opportunity to thank every trustee members who have greatly helped me in my new role and taken the time to answer all my questions.

The hall letting has continued at pace. Of note, the board considered the importance of the pre-school letting as this represent a significant part of our earnings. The board decided to mitigate this by making the hall available for weekend hires. This preemptive approach proved itself useful, as the group was informed in April 2023 that the pre-school would be closing down in July. The board quickly acted on this information and steps were taken to secure a new tenant. This was accomplished successfully

And a new pre-school will be starting in September, allowing a seamless transition between the two pre-schools. I am thankful for everyone who has helped managed this, and in particular Paul Musk for his tireless commitment in dealings with all our tenants and securing a new contract with another pre-school.

The hall has had a number of improvement works, notably to manage the heating of the hall during the cold months. There as well, I thank Paul Musk for his hard work managing the work, and for all leaders and members for their assistance and prompt engagement.

As this is my first report as the group Chair, I would like to take this opportunity to share my views on 14[th] Bromley Scout Group, from the perspective of a newcomer. I have been amazed at the absolute dedication of every volunteer I have met. Everyone is keen to assist, lending a hand to assist whichever section is in need of help. Many are taking a lot of their personal time to help run the group, especially when considering that the group owns our premises, with all the work that entails: managing tenants and maintaining the premises.

Appendix (ii).

GSL 14[th] Bromley report year 2022/23

This year has been a busy one with all groups meeting regularly and District events being run. Several awards have been gained at these District events. A new section has been started. We now have a squirrel dray. Able run by Liz Bostock with her helpers Liz and Heather. This is for 4-6 years olds and they currently have 8 invested members.

Scouts have 30 members with 8 regular leaders. Ably led by Joe Collier and 5/6 regular helpers. Cubs have 21 members with 4 young leaders and 6 leaders. Michael Rayment-Johnson is their leader. Beavers have 12 members with Mathew Lofting as their leader with 3 helpers. Explorers have 28 members with Paul Musk as their leader with2 others.

We have had several senior awards given to our young people and leaders which show a lot of hard work to gain them. 3 scouts gained their gold chief scout awardWill Musk, Jack Westover and Stefan Clark. There are several cubs working towards their silver chief scout award. Tom Bostock won explorer of the year.

In the biannual District Moonwalk competition, our explorer team won the new award, The Tony Elwood award, for teamwork. Sadly, Tony Elwood from the 23rd Bromley, who was a much loved larger than life scout leader, died in September. He often used to come and help with 14[th] Bromley evenings and has helped out at camps etc. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him and it is fantastic that a 14[th] Bromley team will be the first name on this new trophy.

Steven Lofting assistant scout leader gained his Chief scout Commendation for Good service and Joe Collier and Steven were both awarded County Commissions for Good service. Sophie Durman has gained her Queens Scout award. The top achievement for any scout to gain.

Regular working party weekends have been held lead by volunteers and the leaders. These help maintain our kit and the fabric of our buildings and land. Thank you to all who have helped out.

Paul Musk has done an amazing job this year taking on the lets of the hall. This has not come as an easy task but he has managed extremely well. We will have a new long-term nursery letting starting in September so look forward to working with them. All the other regular lettings are hoping to continue.

Alexandra Sakuri (one of our beaver mums)has agreed to be our Chairman so now we have a full team on our management team. Regular termly meeting are held to discuss the running of the group.

Steve Holman and his archive gnomes are still finding out our past and documenting it.

My thanks to all involved with the group and thank you for all the hard work you put into it to make it a great scout group.

14[th] Bromley Squirrels – report for the Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Following approval to set up a Squirrel Section in January 2023, we have purchased all that we need to start the Section and everything is stored in boxes in the new shed. The signage and website have both been updated.

I am now officially a Squirrel Scout Leader and my role has been updated on Compass. I am supported by Heather Lloyd and Liz Dray We have two young leaders – Jack Lindsey and Tom Bostock. Based on the number of leaders we have, the maximum number of Squirrels we can have is 12.

I have attended an ‘Introduction to Squirrels’ zoom, plus joined a Squirrel cohort group (which meets monthly for 6 months to share ideas and experiences). We have successfully launched with our first meeting on 21 April. We currently have 8 Squirrels with us. The term programme included:

On the final week of term, we had a summer party and we awarded the Get Creative and Go Wild activity badges.

I would like to thank everyone for their support with our new Squirrel section and we are all looking forward to the autumn term.

14th Bromley Beavers – report for the Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Beavers have had another successful year with a varied and ever-changing programme. In the Autumn we completed the health and fitness badge, beavers spent a few evenings exploring different healthy foods, trying out a few agility courses and even had an evening about how to keep your teeth healthy. Later, in the term 11 beavers enjoyed a day out to sea life London, beavers loved looking around at all the different sea creatures, of course the sharks were a favourite. Finishing off the term in the usual way, we made Christmas cards and had a wear your own Christmas jumper party.

Moving on into the spring, this term was made of a few badges we needed to finish off but some we hadn’t done for a while. Beavers completed their international, safety, creative, experiment and navigator badges. Was a busy term but we still found time to indulge in some pancakes. Some beavers still haven’t mastered where their mouth is and had chocolate source everywhere. Mother’s Day cards were of course made, it’s lovely to see how some take great care in making theirs special. It’s always fun to watch them shuffle out the door trying to hide their creations at pick up.

We were due to attend the district easter egg hunt, with 8 signed up, but unfortunately this was cancelled the morning off because of the heavy rain.

Rolling into the summer term, we had the District St. Georges day event. Despite more rain the day before, this went ahead, and 6 beavers had a great time in the mud with the chose of over 100 activities. Despite or best effort we couldn’t get round it all, but they took part in a very wide range of activities. Celebrating the coronation of His Majesty the King, we held our very own “street” party in the hall, beavers had their own little picnic and created a royal portrait. We also had a visit to St. John’s Church, where beavers had a look around and learned about the Christian faith. After half term we had S-J in for a lesson on 1[st] aid, beavers are very good drama queens at playing dead, they also love bandaging each other until they couldn’t move. Coming back to present day we recently had a beaver sleepover at Wilberforce, this was attended by 5 beavers, we did hope for more, but we still had a very enjoyable time. Building dens, gathering wood for the fire, roasting marshmallows, putting up tents and spending a lot of time running around on the play area earned these beavers their nights away and outdoor challenge badge.

Over the year we have achieved 4 Chief Scout’s Bronze Awards. These were awarded to Christopher Nye-Jones and Kai Leroye-Sakurai. The other 2 will be presented very soon with a few more not too far away. The Beaver of the year award was presented to Christopher Nye-Jones at our annual remembrance service. I’m also very pleased to say that on the 23[rd] of May we invested Alexandra LeroyeSakurai and Heather Lloyd into the 14[th] Bromley.

Beavers’ numbers have been consistent with12 beavers throughout the year. This is expected to drop with 7 moving up this year, but the summer holiday often brings a rise in enquiries.

As always beavers simply couldn’t happen without an amazing team of leaders and am I very thankful too Liz Bostock, Alexandra Leroye-Sakurai, Heather Lloyd and young leaders, Darcy Morton-Turner, Asher Falcon, and George Zelenov. They all do an excellent Job each week to keep the wheels turning.

14[th] Bromley Cubs – report for the Annual General Meeting (AGM)

This update covers the period from July 2022 to July 2023. We currently have 21 Cubs with us.

Summer term

On 9 July, we entered three teams into the Cub Scout Challenge. We were very proud of them all for their teamwork and enthusiasm! Thank you to the district team for running the event.

We then held a five night summer camp at Thriftwood between 23 and 28 July with the 32nd Bromley. 11 cubs attended from the 14th. We all had an amazing time in the sunshine, with lots of on-site activities and a trip to Walton-on-the-Naze.

Winter term

We returned after the summer holidays on 5 September, with an evening of team games. We have an open invitation to the cubs to ‘bring a friend’ along after its previous success.

Sadly on 8 September, our Patron Her Majesty the Queen passed away. As a result on 12 September, we held a minutes silence and renewed our promise to the new King. We then made fires in the garden and cooked dough twists.

We held a two-night camp with the 32[nd] Bromley at Hope Hill on Friday 16 September to Sunday 18 September. 8 cubs attended from the 14[th] . They had lots of fun, made (and decorated) shortbread biscuits and did a number of pre-arranged activities. Everyone was rather tired at collection time!

On 26 September, we had a ‘Show and Tell’ evening (with Collector, Hobbies and Physical Recreation activity badges awarded). We finished the half-term with a trip to Mr Mulligan’s Dino Golf in Sidcup. We returned after the half term with a spooky Halloween night and an evening on the climbing wall.

On 12 November, we went on a trip to London to see the Lord Mayor’s Show (10 cubs attended). This was followed by a sleepover in the hall. The following day (Sunday 13 November) was Remembrance Sunday, so we assisted with the set-up of the hall for the Group Remembrance service and 17 cubs attended.

On 14 November, we went to Wilberforce and played wide games. On 21 November we had a ‘restaurant evening’, where the cubs cooked spaghetti bolognaise and parents/carers came along at the end to taste their efforts! This was very successful, the cubs enjoyed themselves and the adults became more involved so we are planning a repeat evening in March where we will attempt to cook curry.

On 5 December, we went on a night hike around Beckenham Place Park. We ended the term with some Christmas craft.

Spring term

We returned after the Christmas holidays on 9 January, with an evening of team games. We held evenings about Chinese new year and Burns night and then had a trip to LaserQuest on 6 February.

In the February half herm, we held a ‘back to basics’ two-night winter camp at Waylands with the 32[nd] Bromley.

After half term, we made pancakes, had a visit from Zoolab where the Cubs got to see some pretty cool animals, made fires, and on 13 March, made craft for Mother’s Day.

On 20 March, after the success of our last ‘restaurant evening’, we held another one – this time cooking thai green curry with rice. Parents/carers came along at the end of the evening to taste their efforts and it was very successful. We finished the term at Jubilee Park with an evening of wide games.

Summer term

We returned after Easter with an evening at Wilberforce playing games. On Sunday 23rd April, 9 Cubs joined us at Frylands for the District St George’s Day celebrations. This term we have also played football and mini golf at Sparrows Den, gone on a mini-beast hunt at Scadbury Park, made keep-sake boxes as presents for Father’s Day and learnt how to make fires. We will be finishing the term at Wilberforce with a giant game of rounders.

Our summer camp this year is 5 nights at Bushy Wood from Saturday 22nd July to Thursday 27th. We have 6 Cubs coming from the 14th, and like last year we are joining up with the 32nd – so in total we will have 29 young people with us.

Scout Section Report 14[th] Bromley Group Trustee Board – Annual General Meeting (2022-23)

It has been another busy year for the 14[th] Bromley Scout Troop as we continue to put all the disruption caused by COVID-19 behind us.

February 2023 saw the section produce a strong census return with twenty-nine scouts on our books at the time. Although this represented a loss of five scouts on the 2022 census result, I am pleased to report that we have since grown, with thirty scouts now on our books (and new cubs set to join us in September). We continue to be supported by four full time leaders – one Scout Leader and three Assistant Scout Leaders. Pleasingly, we can now also count on the regular support of two Occasional Helpers.

Summer Term 2022 saw scouts participate in ‘back-woods cooking’; refine their Ordinance Survey map skills; navigate a hike; practice knots and lashings; and receive an exciting ‘up close and personal’ birds of prey experience courtesy of Falconry UK. The 14[th] Bromley Scout Group also had the honour of representing the entirety of Bromley District Scouts at the Queen’s ‘Platinum Jubilee Parade’ down Bromley High Street (with two scouts attending). Scouts also worked towards their ‘Creative Challenge Badge’ with an explosive paint evening. The term was rounded off with a victory against 11[th] Bromley in our annual rounders match and the traditional end of term water fight!

Summer Camp 2022 was held at Beacon Hill Scout Campsite. Eleven Scouts joined us for our first summer camp since 2019. Activities included a day visit to the Bluebell Railway; a visit to Shoreham and the Shoreham Lifeboat Station; kayaking on Weir Wood Reservoir; and rifle shooting. Our annual hike took us through the Ashdown Forest and across Pooh Bridge – an epic game of Pooh Sticks soon followed…

Autumn Term 2022 began with a visit to Buckingham Palace to mark the sad passing of HM the Queen. Autumn also saw the return of our annual summer camp presentation evening; a range of team games and challenges (including the ever popular ‘submarines’); and our annual Remembrance Sunday commemorations (which were supported this year by a visit to The Cenotaph). Scouts also took part in circuit training for the ‘Fitness Challenge’; and refined their cooking skills in ‘ready, steady, cook’. Autumn 2022 saw us hold two overnight events - our ‘Environmental and Community Impact Camp’ at Cudham Shaws (allowing scouts to work towards their ‘Skills Challenge Badge’); and our ‘Bonfire Night Sleepover’ at Frylands Wood. Autumn 2022 also saw the return of the District swimming badge assessments at Beckenham Spa, and the planting of the District ‘Platinum Jubilee Wood’. An honourable mention must go to Will Musk, winner of the Geoff Pinneker Award for most improved scout in November 2022.

Spring Term 2023 started with a series of cultural celebrations with scouts marking Chinese New Year and Burns Night. A photo scavenger hunt around Bromley (as part of the ‘Local Knowledge Activity Badge’) followed, as well as the usual pancake day fun. Scouts received the tuition of a professional artist as they designed cards for

Mothering Sunday, and the District’s ‘Scouts of Steel’ returned at Frylands Wood where the troop entered three teams (achieving second place in both the over twelveand-a-half and under twelve-and-a-half competitions). Spring Term was rounded off with team challenges; a science experiment night; Easter celebrations; and wide games.

Bromley District’s St George’s Day celebrations returned at the start of Summer Term 2023, with twenty-two Scouts joining Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Explorers from across the district in an activity fun day at Frylands Wood. A great time was had by all, even if mud is the main memory people took away! Summer Term 2023 also included a celebration of Earth Day and preparation for the Expedition Challenge in May. Eleven scouts joined us for the expedition to Broadstone Warren, and all achieved their ‘Expedition Challenge Badges’. The term also featured fire lighting and cooking challenges; wide games; catapult building; ‘trash fashion’ cat-walking; the District Moonwalk competition (in which we entered three teams); rounders; tent servicing; and the usual challenges and games.

We are now looking ahead to our summer camp. Eleven scouts will be joining us on this year’s adventure to Ferny Crofts Scout Activity Centre in Hampshire.

I must acknowledge Will Musk, Stefan Clark, and Jack Westover who achieved their Chief Scout Gold Awards this year (which were presented by District Commissioner Sheila Howard). Steven Lofting and I received County Commissioner Commendations, with Steven Lofting also receiving a Chief Scout Commendation for Good Service.

I have been well supported this year by Steven Lofting, Chloe White, Sophie Durman, Sarah-Jane Durman, Amy White, Steve White, and Adam Channon. This would have been a very difficult year without them, and I extend my thanks, and the thanks of many parents, to them for their continued support and dedication to the 14th Bromley Scout Troop.

14th Bromley Explorers – report for the Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The Explorer unit continues to grow. We had a fantastic camp in Derbyshire last year when Explorers did lots of exciting things from Rolf building to Kevin to rockclimbing, hiking in horrendous hurricane conditions as well as cycling around the beautiful lady Bower reservoir

In the autumn term, we had a big influx of members and the unit went up to 28 and I am pleased to say that a year later we still have 25 members on the books with a regular attendance of between 14 and 20 members.

We have had a varied program from go, karting, paddle boarding, paint balling, rock climbing, cooking skills, navigation skills, teamwork, games, and problem-solving evenings as well as a camp in the winter term which proved to be lots of fun.

In terms of awards, I would like to say that Tom Bostock received the explorer of the year award, and we recently entered the moonwalk competition and won the inaugural teamwork trophy. I’m also pleased to say that I received my five year service award.

This year we have got our biggest camp ever with 19 Explorers going away and I am pleased to say we now have more leaders going and have two additional occasional helpers coming with us to make a total of 4 leaders.

I’m also pleased to say that I have received help and now I have a rota of occasional helpers that will help out every single week once a month. I’m also pleased to say that one of the parents has taken on the role of completing and looking after the Explorer Accounts for me.
