Easter with Endeavour

Message from the Chairman

As Endeavour entered 2020, it is fair to say that none of us could have predicted what was about to unfold across the world. The impact of this dreadful pandemic has been felt by all, and Endeavour was no different. As we entered the first lockdown back in March, life as most of us knew it was about to change, yet Nicks team stepped up admirably, adapting to a ‘new normal’. From Zoom meetings with our members, to telephone calls, park youth club and door-step visits in accordance with government guidelines, the team were unwavering in their support to our members. Whilst the clubs’ doors remained closed, Endeavour stepped up and demonstrated exactly what the club stands for.

Nick remained on furlough yet spent most of his time supporting the Dons charity. Partnerships have been crucial to us over the years, and 2020 was no different. The Black family trust and the Peacock trust continued their long-standing support for Endeavour, and I would like to place on record my sincere gratitude for their continued support and commitment. It would also be remis of me not to mention the following who all contributed to Endeavour:

Tesco/ Groundwork Merton Giving (MVSC) Wimbledon Foundation (LTA) London Community Foundation (Covid Response) Penney, Ruddy and Winter (Investment fund and donation) Shin Patel (Generous Donation) DLAG (Dons Local Action Group) Co-op Community Fund

Whilst 2020 was the most challenging and turbulent period of my term as Chairman, each person connected with Endeavour stepped up and for that I am extremely grateful and proud.

Endeavour and the NHS Heroes

Club leaders report

Where to start… Within the first week of the country being locked down and no youth club open, we started to arrange home visits to our members. As you will see from the pictures this kept us in contact with our

members and they were very happy to see us. With myself being furloughed, the staff team stepped up and were truly amazing in delivering youth club remotely.

During the summer months, the club moved over to the local park due to restrictions not allowing us to open the club building. We were also able to use Wey Island albeit day trips as we couldn’t have overnight stays. This was very successful and helped our members enjoy some time outside after being house bound for so long.

Once we approached September the guidelines were in place for youth clubs to re-open. We arranged the members into school bubbles of 15 throughout the week. This restricted the amount of members we could have in but we managed to accommodate most them.

Normally from the end of October it is the start of a big end of year for the club with Halloween, London trips and the Christmas party. As we could not do any of these we decorated the mini bus for Halloween and Christmas and visited all our members with Halloween treats and at Christmas activity Christmas sacks. The staff team ran online youth club sessions a couple of nights per week throughout the lock down.

After a very tough year the club has adapted its services to support the members through testing times. The club can now start to look forward to celebrating the clubs 70[th] Anniversary in 2021.

I just want to say thank you to everyone that supported the club the trustees, staff, volunteers and some new volunteers who stepped up when some of the staff had to isolate.

Treasurer’s report Julie Nadar

The trustees have managed the club’s budget very well in 2020. Nick the club manager has done very well in bidding for successful grants and fundraising events.

Our investment continued with Penney, Ruddy and Winter into 2020. They helped us to manage the investment wisely so we were able to withdraw a substantial amount to help us continue our work this year, without which our services would have been affected.

Working in partnership with Waitrose

At the start of the first lockdown, due to club having to close and Nick being furloughed. The club offered to help a local scheme to help deliver food boxes to the most vulnerable in our community. The club over its history has helped other organisations where it can and this was this generation’s chance to the same.

From what is now the Dons Local action group, Endeavour has played a major part in its conception and still does today.

One of the tasks we were asked to carry out was to deliver end of night reduced food that both Waitrose Wimbledon stores to the local frontline services. From April to December the Endeavour has delivered food 7 nights a week to our grateful frontline services.

Our deliveries are very well received every night and we have built up a great bond with the local services with the aim of taking our members along in the future to educate them on how to use the service correctly. The club in the future will get them to visit the local frontline services and the members will receive fire safety and first aid training.

None of this would be possible if it was not for Waitrose and their amazing staff who we have built up a long-term relationship with.

Club Life in Lockdown

Many thanks to Waitrose and their staff team.
