## _**Objectives of the Association**_

The Triangle Adventure Playground Association was formed in 1957. The constitution states that it is the Association’s purpose to service, fund and maintain the Triangle Adventure Playground for the benefit of young people between the ages of six and seventeen. The Association’s primary aim is to provide a safe and secure environment in which all the young people of the community may develop personal and social skills through creative interaction in enjoyable play. Members of the Association believe that it is through such interaction and activities that young people establish active lifestyles; come to feel secure in themselves and in their ability to make full use of their education; achieve their maximum potential; develop fulfilling relationships with their peers; avoid being drawn into crime and involve themselves positively in the wider community.

The Association provides staff, structures, movable equipment, tools, and materials in a triangle of green space on the Ashmole estates in North Lambeth. The playground is heavily used by local children and young people who otherwise have no access to supervised, outdoor, natural play space within a built-up urban environment. Young people who use the playground are encouraged by its staff to develop a sense of ownership of their playground and to experience ‘active citizenship’ in that they create and ‘police’ the playground’s code of conduct and lead the development of the site through regular ‘Youth Forum’ meetings.

The Triangle operates as an open-access playground. All young people aged 6-17 are welcome to come and go as they please. Access is free. Parents of users are required to complete a registration form for health and safety reasons and to provide monitoring information for our funders.

_**Achievements and Performance**_

The Triangle is proud to report on a successful and impactful twelve months. Our ongoing quality free play sessions, expansion of service and increased attendance is proof of vibrant life at London’s oldest on site adventure playground. Our dedication to our community and our ethos of child led free play stand as strong as ever, giving young people the chance to flourish through play.

_**Expansion of service**_

Our expansion of service maintained progress in 2024 - 2025. We continued the ongoing success of our lunchtime school curriculum PSHE (Physical, Health, Social and Economic Education) session, welcoming a local primary class to the playground weekly during term time.

This year saw us launch Triangle Youth Club, a series of 8 evening sessions in May - July 2024 for older children aged 11 - 17. Triangle Youth Club was organised with the young people driving the plans after requesting evening sessions during one of our regular youth forum discussions. The club has made a real impact and we have already planned to double our sessions for next year.

**I really like youth club, we can chill without the youngers around, cook something nice, fix our bikes and just have fun. If I’m not here on a friday night then I don’t have nothing to do. -** Youth Club attendee A. aged 16

Another new addition this year were exciting dance, basketball and football sessions with specialist coaches. Running within our play sessions, dance took place at the Boury Academy Studios, whilst football and basketball happened at Lilian Bayliss Technology School. Our specialist coaches were able to bring extra knowledge and skills to create impactful sessions. These sessions totalled an extra 60 hours of service and benefited 75 young people.

**My daughter has really enjoyed the opportunity to do free dance sessions, thank you Triangle! -** Triangle Parent 2025

_**Capital works**_

All good adventure playground landscapes involve a lot of creation, a slice of destruction and a constant evolution. This year was no different as the young people set about designing and planning a new large scale upgraded platform swing as well as contributing to on site repairs and refurbishments. Allotment work, painting fences and digging holes just a few tasks enthusiastically undertaken by children and playworkers of all ages to keep their playground in tip top shape. Looking ahead to 2025 - 2026 our new kitchen is lined up for installation ahead of Summer 2025, we continue to seek funds for the new platform and tango swings and have plans to rewild the waste land bufferzone behind the fence.

## _**Trips & Workshops**_

In addition to the wide range of play on site we also make an effort to offer young people new experiences through visiting workshops at The Triangle and trips around London. These vary between sporting, cultural and educational themes and young people are at the forefront of choosing where to go or who to invite to the playground. A wild highlight of 2024 - 2025 was that the AnimalEd crew came to visit the playground! Besides our annual Littlehampton seaside trip for 70 we also visited...

_**Sport and physical play**_

From football, basketball and trampolining to roller skating, dodgeball and giant swings, our young people just don’t stop moving! Physical health, fine and gross motor skills, teamwork and confidence all boosted by our active all year round play. The addition of our specialist sessions enhanced our sports and dance activities off site, as one of the founders we took part in the annual adventure playground football tournament at Lollard Street and we welcomed back our boxing coach to the playground too.

_**Adventure Play**_

Adventure play is who we are and what we do best! Be it climbing trees, building dens or creating homemade swings children are outside interacting with their environment and the natural world. Loose parts and imagination create new games and ideas that shape the play and the landscape of the playground. Our skilled playworkers coupled with our child led ethos allows us to encourage and enable young people to play without limitations and safely challenge themselves, developing decision making, confidence and resilience.

## _**Art and creative play**_

Paint, clay, ink and every artistic medium going! Arts and crafts galore in each session enables our young people to explore and develop their creativity and skills. Seasonal arts included Christmas Candle making and cyanotypes in Summer, whilst our young people worked as a group to spraypaint a TRIANGLE fence. Tiny trinkets or life size portrait painting, a music production session or getting out the badge making machine... choice and opportunity are at the forefront of our creative play. A chance to improve artistic talents and feel the mental health benefits from making art and making friends.

Creative workshops included slime making workshop, origami flower crafting workshop, trip to Tate Gallery and our ongoing partnership with Gasworks Gallery brought special artistic skills to site.

_**Nature Club**_

**Throughout the past year, Nature Club has seen 243 young people get involved with and inspired by the natural world across 114 sessions, with a total of 1269 attendances.**

Being able to maintain the rich biodiversity of the playground- with over 150 different species encountered- is at the forefront of many of the activities that the young people participate in. For example we performed many different bug hunts, bird watches and biodiversity surveys, as well as placing pitfall and footprint traps and wildlife camera to ensure that we captured an accurate picture of the wildlife of Triangle. The young people also learnt about different life cycles of nature within the playground with our annual caterpillar growing, chia seed frogspawn and watching our mining bees come out during September. Showing their care for the creatures around them, many young people built habitats for different species, such as snails, ants and ladybirds, as well as building a bug hotel. They also learnt how to care for different animals by filling bird feeders and butterfly feeders.

The young people have been busy in the allotments over the past year with them growing and harvesting a number of different fruits and vegetables including potatoes, lettuce, chard, beetroot, tomatoes, rhubarb, redcurrants, blackberries, plums and apples.

Through arts and crafts, the young people got creative with nature inspired projects such as pinecone art, paper mache globes, bubble painting, flower pressing and ooblek making. Games such as quizzes, scavenger hunts, heads up and track matching made learning about different animals and wildlife engaging and competitive. There was a lot of interest this year in biology and how things work, microscopes were used to look up close at different textures of things found in nature, as well as getting a closer look at our skin, DNA extracted from a strawberry was also looked at in the microscope, the young people were able to see up close what makes them unique. Fires were used throughout the year to keep warm and make some tasty snacks such as pizza pockets, hotdogs, smores and pancakes. The young people also learnt about how to build a fire and fire safety, as well as how to prepare the wood for the fire. To deepen their connection with nature, trips to places such as Kew Gardens, Natural History Museum, Stretham Common and London Wildlife Trust took place, offering real-world encounters that inspire curiosity and care for the environment.

_**The Triangle was delighted to receive high praise from Three Acorns Eco Auditers following their visit to assess our site and working practices. Our 98.5 carbon tonne output per annum is the lowest they have ever recorded, with our Nature Club activities and green practices highlighted for their impact.**_

This year also saw us join the Lambeth Climate Partnership and receive commendation for our Nature Club showcase at the Lambeth Climate Action Plan event at the town hall. The future looks green at Triangle with plans to rewild our wasteland buffer zone into a wildflower meadow.

## _Food_

Our commitment to supporting our young people facing food insecurity is unwavering. Thanks to support from Lambeth HAF and Mayors Fund Kitchen Social we were able to provide hot lunches for all throughout holiday sessions. Fresh fruit is offered throughout all play sessions of the year, with a later snack time providing biscuits, rice cakes and yoghurts for the children.

The new kitchen will be installed ahead of Summer 2025 to expand our provision of meals and cooking/baking activities on site.

## _**Staff Matters**_

The Triangle Management committee would like to thank all our playworkers for their fantastic efforts this year. The range of staff training and qualifications gained or in progress this year include paediatric first aid, Food Hygiene and Allergen training level 2.

Our volunteer to playworker scheme continues to provide employment opportunities for local young adults. Three young adults (whom spent their childhood playing at Triangle) graduated on our volunteer to playworker scheme and joined our pool of sessional playworkers, all paid above the London Living Wage. We have also supported other young people with work experience opportunities.

Congratulations to our long serving GM & Senior Playworker Jonathan Choo who celebrated his 15[th] year leading the play at Triangle. Thank you to Jon for his incredible dedication and efforts on behalf our playground and community. Here’s to another 15 years!

**A special acknowledgment and thanks to our playworker Lily Reeves who took part in a sponsored cycle ride from London to Brighton, raising Triangle over £3,000 and inspiring our next generation of cyclists!**

A humungous heartfelt thank you to **Juliet Hobday** (pictured) who has stepped down from the management committee after 15 years of sterling service as secretary and latterly trustee. Juliet has been a vital part of The Triangle family and exemplified community spirit. A fantastic gardener who helped shape our green landscape, she cycled weekly to pick up and deliver cargo bike’s worth of free food for Triangle families, helped arrange countless cake sales and Triangle events, spent time creating our register spreadsheet each year along with the very busy secretary role! We wish Juliet and her wonderful famliy the very best for her new life in Australia.

We welcomed two new Management Committee members this year, Ivo Herries and Debbie Antwi.

_**Volunteer days**_

A crucial part of our ongoing maintenance of the playground is the corporate volunteer days we host throughout the year. This year teams from M&G Plc and Berkeley Foundation put in some hard graft and definitely didn’t shy away from the dirty jobs!

“ **We've got a great relationship with The Triangle and it was very rewarding (and a lot of fun) for our team to come down to the playground, get our hands dirty and do our bit in supporting such a special place!” -** Sophie from the Berkeley Foundation.

## _**Financial Review**_

Total income for the year amounted to £239,348 with expenditure closing at £230,793, resulting in a surplus of £8,555. The majority of income was derived from grants (65%), followed by donations (33%), with the remainder from bank interest.

Grant income totalled £155,751, of which £116,251 (75%) was restricted funding—allocated for specific projects or activities as stipulated by funders. The remaining £39,500 was unrestricted, allowing the charity flexibility to cover core operational costs, including staff salaries and essential services. Lambeth Council contributed approximately 50% of total grant income.

Donation income reached £78,120, a significant decrease from £131,267 in the previous year. This decline is largely due to the conclusion of a 4 year partnership with the Berkeley Corporation, which contributed £91,294 last year compared to a final payment of £43,536 received in June this year. Excluding Berkeley’s contributions, donations for FY 2024/25 stood at £34,584—a 13% year-on-year decline (£5,389).

Donations via CAF and payroll giving schemes totalled £22,867 (down 26%), while direct donations amounted to £6,349 (down 24%), including £1,400 from corporate volunteering days. The number of regular donors has also declined to around 70, contributing an average of £11 per month—a 9% drop compared to last year.

These figures clearly reflect the financial pressures currently faced by families, local residents, and supporters of the playground. Securing a new corporate partnership, similar to the one set up with Berkeley, will be a key focus for FY 2025/26 and beyond. We also aim to promote new activities, facilities, and services at TAPA to attract future donors and strengthen our funding base.

Expenditure was dominated by payroll costs, which totalled £174,709—representing 78% of overall spending. Other significant costs included installation of our own separate new electrical mains connection and complete rewiring of the building with new electrical equipment (£10,495), part of our ongoing efforts to modernise the playground’s infrastructure.

## **Looking Ahead**

In recent years, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic, we have taken a financially cautious approach—building up reserves where possible to safeguard the charity’s future and ensure we can continue to invest in the playground. These reserves have enabled us to make meaningful improvements to the site and expand our offer to children and young people. Our focus has been on creating a space that is not only safe and welcoming, but also relevant to the needs and interests of today’s children—from primary school age through to the teen years.

While the current economic climate presents challenges, particularly with declining donations and a high proportion of restricted grant funding, we remain committed to maintaining and growing our services. With salaries representing our largest expense, the limited availability of unrestricted income does place pressure on our core operations. However, we are actively seeking new funding partnerships and exploring innovative ways to engage supporters and donors. Our vision for the future is one of resilience and renewal. By continuing to modernise our facilities, introduce new activities, and respond to the evolving needs of the community, we aim to strengthen attendance and ensure that TAPA remains a vital and inspiring space for children and young people in Lambeth.

**Triangle Adventure Playground Association Notes to the Accounts**

## **for the year ended 31 March 2025**

- 1 **Accounting policies**

## **Basis of preparation**

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued on 16 July 2014 and the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011.

## **Change in basis of accounting or to previous accounts**

There has been no change to the accounting policies (valuation rules and method of accounting) since last year and no changes have been made to accounts for previous years.

## **Fund accounting**

Unrestricted funds These are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objects of the charity.

Restricted funds These are available for use subject to restrictions imposed by the donor or through terms of an appeal.

## **Income**

Recognition of Income is included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when the charity income becomes entitled to, and virtually certain to receive, the income and the amount of the income can be measured with sufficient reliability.

## **Expenditure**

Recognition of Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis. Expenditure includes any VAT expenditure which cannot be fully recovered, and is reported as part of the expenditure to which it relates.

## **Taxation**

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

## **Tangible fixed assets and depreciation**

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life:

Plant and machinery 25% Reducing balance

## **Cash and cash equivalents**

Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and on hand, demand deposits with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less and bank overdrafts. In the statement of financial position, bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings or current liabilities. In the Statement of Cash Flows, cash and cash equivalents are shown net of bank overdrafts that are repayable on demand and form an integral part of the company's cash management.

28

**Triangle Adventure Playground Association Notes to the Accounts**

## **Trade and other creditors**

Short term creditors are measured at the transaction price. Other creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are normally recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.

## **Pension costs**

The charity operates a defined contribution plan for its employees. A defined contribution plan is a pension plan under which the charity pays fixed contributions into a separate entity. Once the contributions have been paid the charity has no further payments obligations. The contributions are recognised as expenses when they fall due. Amounts not paid are shown in accruals in the balance sheet. The assets of the plan are held separately from the charity in independently administered funds.

## **Receipt of donated goods, facilities and services**

All donated goods, facilities and services received are recognised within incoming resources and expenditure at an estimate of the value to the charity.
