BBQ 9th North Watford Scout Group www.9thorthwatford.co.uk Charity number: 302601 ## **Chairman’s Report** As I reflect on 2025, I’m delighted to report that it’s been another amazing year for the 9th North Watford Scout Group albeit we have had some setbacks along the way. We continue to make our mark in the local area and we’re widely recognised as an integral part of the Woodside community, attending and contributing to local events. Providing Skills for Life has always been our main aim and we continue to do this with over 100 children regularly attending one of our sessions every week. It’s a measure of our success that we also have a waiting list of approaching 50 children. We’ll look to add further to our pack when the time is right and volunteers permitting. It’s a little disappointing that our plans for a new building have been delayed somewhat by the requirement for a number of additional reports to accompany our planning application. However, with the assistance of our Architect we are aiming to provide these reports imminently and we’re hoping to have planning permission by mid-summer. Once planning approval is granted, it will be full steam ahead with our fund-raising efforts and we’ll let you know how you can help us with this. We have engaged with a professional fund raiser to help us however if you have any ideas regarding fund raising activities or know of company’s/organisation who might be prepared to sponsor this project then please do get in touch with us. We’re still looking to strengthen our board of trustees by adding a young person (aged 1825) and a parent/guardian to the board. It’s not necessary for you to have had previous experience of scouting or of being a trustee before as training is provided. If you are interested in working to improve and promote the 9th North Watford Scout Group by becoming a trustee then please get in touch with us or look on our website where you’ll find an application form and details of what is required of a trustee. It would be remiss of me to close my report without thanking all of those who have contributed to our success in 2025. He discussed milestones such as Squirrels reaching their first birthday, and the success of opening a second Beaver colony. Steve proudly invited those present to look at the plans for the new hut, and explained we are hoping to shortly submit our planning application. A request was made for anyone who can support with fundraisings or bid writing, as well as requesting a parent or an 18-25 year old, who may be willing to join the Board of Trustees. ## **Apologies for absence** Apologies for absence were received from Lisa Beavan and Andrew Reeve. ## **Governance Topics** A copy of the 2024 minutes was included in the AGM information booklet. Approval of the minutes was proposed by Richard Wenham, seconded by Keith Rogers. ## **Review of 2024** a. Jonathan explained that we are continually monitoring costs, to ensure we are as efficient as possible. One job of the Trustees is to ensure the hut is maintained and all insurances for the building are paid, and subscription fees to the Scouts association are up to date. Overall there was a modest income excess of just under £300. We were fortunate enough to receive a few donations, as well as Gift Aid, so this enabled us to run very successful activities and events. As Steve mentioned we have our first draft of our plans for the new hut. If anyone would like to join the steering group, please speak to Jonathan or Steve and they will explain what the steering group do. Next year we will begin fundraising. The numbers continue to increase, which means the group are projected to be on a sound footing for the next financial year. We are a registered charity, therefore if you are able to sign up for Gift Aid (on OSM, at no cost to yourself), this would be very much appreciated as we can claim 25% of the subscriptions back from HMRC, which makes a huge difference. We have around £36,000 across our accounts (vast majority of this was from the COVID period), which will be put towards the costs of the new build and necessary applications. Group Lead Volunteer (GLV) Report - Chris expressed how pleased he is that numbers continue to grow, and that gives us the opportunity to provide more and more young people a chance to have fun and learn valuable skills for life. There has been a range of activities from Axe throwing, camps and everything else in between. Leaders continue to complete training and look for ways to make evenings ‘even better’. This takes dedication from a range of volunteers, so Chris expressed his thanks to all Leaders, Helpers and Parents. Chris also thanked the Trustees for ensuring we have a building and the money required for activities and equipment, whilst also working towards getting our new hut. Chris is very much looking forward to seeing how our ‘little’ Scout group continues to grow, but expressed this will require support from families along the way. If any parent works in a company who may support social projects, please let us know. **District Report - Jack Mawhinney** Jack explained that as well as leading Cubs at 9th NW, he also oversees 700 young people. This is across 9 different Scout groups, and 3 Explorer Units, as well as an awesome team of adult volunteers, in his role as District Lead Volunteer. He expressed pride in 9th NW being the largest group in the district with 127 young people across our 5 sections. Thanks to Steve for chairing the Trustees and for keeping Chris in check, ensuring we’re running a safe programme for all our young people and for getting the momentum going with plans for the new hut. There are 286 on our waiting lists for all age groups, for example there are 90 waiting for Squirrels (60 are within a mile radius of this group). We need more volunteers to open new groups, so that more children have the opportunity to participate in all that Scouting has to offer. Again, please let us know if you have any time to spare, even if you don’t think you have any experience. ## **Presentations** Acorn Awards are the highest award given to Squirrels and were presented to Rafferty, Dylan, Josie, Bertie and Jack. Well done! The following Beavers were invested: Jack and Bertie. The following Cubs were invested: Matilda, Tristan and Charanvi. The Chief Scout five year service award was presented by Jack to Steve Cavinder. ## **Any Other Business** Steve added to Chris and Jack's messages of thanks and suggested that volunteers are unpaid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless! The meeting ended and was closed by Steve Cavinder. Families and Volunteers were then invited to enjoy the BBQ provided. 9th North Watford Scout Group www.9thorthwatford.co.uk Charity number: 302601 ## **Treasurer’s Report** Like everyone we continually monitor the effect of increases in costs to ensure that our income is sufficient to maintain the HQ and provide Scouting to our community, and as a result, the monthly subscription was increased during 2025 from £15 to £16 in April. The Group managed to have an operating income excess (OPEX) of £2,945, not including donations, Gift Aid and savings interest. We also incurred some capital expenditure (CAPEX) of £4,735 for the new HQ by engaging both funding support and an architect, including some of the reports required to support our planning application. The net effect is that the Group is £1,905 better off than we were at the end of 2025. As the financial situation is encouraging the Trustee Board decided that monthly subscriptions for 2026 would remain at £16. As you are aware, the 9[th] North Watford Scout Group is a registered charity and relies predominantly on monthly subs to support the running of our HQ, which has fixed costs, regardless of the number of young people in the Group. May I please encourage all who can to register for Gift Aid on Online Scout Manager. 9th North Watford Scout Group www.9thorthwatford.co.uk Charity number: 302601 ## **GLV Report** 2025 has been yet another year filled with fun activities across the whole group. We have seen consistent membership meaning that our group currently stands with 111 young people spread over our 5 sections. The Leadership teams from these sections have been planning, organising and then running various activities both in our scout hall and out and about at local venues. Activities such as crafting, cooking, performing have been complimented with games and play to ensure the right balance of fun and learning is had. Some more adventurous activities such as camping, fire lighting, pioneering and shooting have also taken place. Running alongside these activities, the young members of our group have earned badges and gained skills in socialising, manners, respect for others and many more vital skills for life all whilst have a smile and sometimes getting very dirty! Our Trustees have also been very busy behind the scenes managing our current hall whilst planning the building of our brand-new headquarters. Having to negotiate the intricate mine field of planning permission, sustainability reports and red tape. I continue to marvel at their patience and determination to bring our dreams of a new hall to fruition Throughout this year we have seen some changes to our leadership teams and we have had to shuffle a few people around. To those adult helpers and leaders who have dedicated so much to our group in the past and that have decided to step down (for now), I thank you for everything you have done for our young people and the group. To those adult helpers, leaders and team members who continue to show up each week to deliver a varied programme and to help our young people learn, smile and laugh, I once again give my whole hearted thanks. Our group would not be here without you giving up your time and commitment. This leads me to once again appeal to you, our wider family, our parents and friends, we still need help! Each section could so with and extra helper/leader or 2. We even need some leaders for a new section coming soon! And if being front of house isn't your thing, we need to help on our trustee board. Whether you can help once a week, once a month or only 2 or 3 times a year there is a role for you at the 9th. And finally......to every Squirrel, Beaver, Cub, Scout, parent, carer, and anyone else that continues to support our amazing Scout Group, Thank you!! ## **Chris Gurdler** Group Lead Volunteer 9th North Watford Scout Group www.9thorthwatford.co.uk Charity number: 302601 ## **Parents and Young People Comments** For the first time, this year it was suggested that we include some comments and words from our young people, their parents and other members. This will be a continued part of our AGM going forward. Here is what they said: “One of the most rewarding aspects of being involved in Scouts is seeing our children grow and develop throughout their scouting journey. It is wonderful to watch them build confidence, learn new skills, take on challenges, and form lasting friendships as they progress through the sections. We also really value the opportunity to take part in family events such as St George’s Day celebrations and the family camping weekend.” **Charmaine and Paul Instrall** “Ollie and Michael make every week at Cubs fun and we get to do such cool things like cooking, archery, day trips, camps and more.” **Jenson, Cubs** “I love going to Lees Wood and doing all the activities.” **Piper, Beavers** “My daughter and son really valued their time at 9[th] North Watford. They were given so many experiences that we wouldn’t have been able to provide them as a family. They learnt varied life skills, which they have been able to refer to on their CV’s. One of the reasons I decided to join the Trustees, is because I wanted to remain in contact, even though my children are now adults.” **Lisa, Trustee** 9th North Watford Scout Group www.9thorthwatford.co.uk Charity number: 302601 ## **Squirrel Report** So we are going into our 3[rd] year at the 9[th] with our Squirrels and what fun, happy and full of laughter moments we have had. Firstly our team has gone from strength to strength and brought a lot of great ideas to the programme each term, which with a lot of positive feedback from the Squirrels is always an amazing thumbs up, especially when we do food activities which from a young age of 4, they are so confident and knowledgeable about safety. The highlight was making pancakes over mini hobs; the toppings we had were something else too, more toppings then pancake I can remember! Then prior to this meeting we had Christmas, we had an annual care home visit. A few weeks before, Squirrels donated fluffy socks, which we wrapped up and gave at the end of the visit, after singing carols and having a treat and juice. We have now arranged a midyear activity event with planting, arts and crafts. We also had a special visitor this year join Squirrels, which has been the biggest hit for everyone, as leader included. At the end of every session we have Berry the Squirrel go home with a Squirrel for the weekend, to see what adventures he can get up to. Our diary is nearly full and Berry has been busy, from meeting lots of new friends, sleep overs and a Chinese for the first time!!! The leaders have taken Berry all over the world, he even went to Canada this year and got a hotel stay with other Squirrels friends. Our weekly sessions included games, nature walks, cooking activities, and practical challenges designed to promote physical fitness, confidence, and an appreciation of the outdoors. Themes such as kindness and creativity were encouraged through initiatives including the Kindness Challenge and Creative Beavers programme, while problem-solving and life skills were developed through coding sessions, money skills activities, and badge work. A total of eight events took place during this past year, each providing valuable opportunities for personal development, friendship, and teamwork. Highlights included a day trip to Chessington, the community AGM BBQ, and the District Camp, where Beavers strengthened their leadership, resilience, and outdoor survival skills. Events such as the Remembrance Service and Christmas Party helped foster a strong sense of community, reflection, and belonging. Meanwhile, activities including the Construction Challenge and Promise Renewal supported the development of confidence, achievement, and commitment to Scouting values. We have had some brilliant highlights this year: Our Pancake Olympics was a big hit, with lots of teamwork and peer encouragement, the hut was very quickly filled with laughter, the Beavers really enjoyed themselves. The end of term water fight was another night to remember, we’re still not sure who got wetter, the beavers or the leaders!! We learnt about different cultures and celebrations from working out what animal year it is for Chinese new year, to sharing bread/apple and honey with our friends as we discovered traditions of Jewish new year, we celebrated Halloween with a party which was filled with games, spooky costumes and A Lot of GLOW STICKS !!!! We enjoyed some gardening, learning how to plant flowers and look after nature and the world around us, then seeing the result of our hard work by growing flowers and runner beans ( Apart from one Beaver who came back to me when nothing had grown after 2 weeks to find they forgot to put a seed in their pot). One of the nicest moments of the year was making Christmas cards and delivering them to our neighbours around the hut, it was a simple activity but it meant a lot, and helped the Beavers show kindness and feel part of the local community. Well done to all our Beavers, for such a great year, we are already looking forward to another exciting year ahead. Notably, the District Cub Camp was a highlight, where Cubs enjoyed numerous activities and received several badges, recognising their achievements and hard work. This year, we distributed loads of various badges reflecting the commitment and skills of our participants, contributing to a sense of accomplishment and pride among the Cubs. In addition to the camp, our meetings also included a range of engaging activities from athletics and badge work to community service projects like litter picking and environmental conservation efforts. Events such as the Group Christmas Concert and the Family Fun Event provided opportunities for families to come together and celebrate. Each meeting was designed to encourage learning in a fun and supportive environment, helping our Cubs to develop their skills across various badges, including the recently celebrated Chef and Space badges. This year has also been significant due to the presentation of eight Chief Scout Silver Awards. These prestigious recognitions illustrate the dedication and enthusiasm of our Cubs, reflecting their commitment to the Scouting principles. It is heartening to see their hard work acknowledged, and all the leaders are proud of their achievements. Looking ahead, we have much to anticipate in the coming year. We are excited for the upcoming District Cub Camp, and there is keen interest in welcoming more Cubs, and a new cub pack, and leaders to our group. This expansion will help further enrich the experiences we offer and ensure a thriving Scout community. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all our leaders for their unwavering commitment and hard work throughout the year. Your dedication has played an essential role in creating these memorable experiences for the Cubs. Your contributions are greatly appreciated, and leadership is vital to the enjoyable and educational atmosphere we strive to maintain. Lastly, I would like to thank the Cubs for their enthusiasm and participation, which make every event enjoyable for all involved. A big thank you to the parents for your ongoing support and the volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make every meeting and event possible. We had took part in the 'new style' promise renewal, where all sections from across both Watford North & Watford South scouts districts attended the ceremony, played games, ate various food and sweets and learned that there is a whole load of other people scouting just down the road from us. Some scouts attended our family camp, then only a few weeks later headed out for a fun packed day out at Chessington. The coming months saw our scouts attend a district camp, take part in 'Watopoly' compete in Green Beret, then laugh and sing at the panto. In between these events we continue to meet weekly to shoot rifles, play games, learn knots do some cooking and light fires, just to name some of the things. We look ahead to 2026 and 2027 with new leaders in the section, maintaining our drive and enthusiasm to ensure that we continue to listen to our scouts and help them to learn those valuable skills for life.
