`Group Scout Leader’s Report`

In April 2021 we came out of Covid‐19 restrictions and resumed face‐to‐face meetings, with Beavers, Cubs and Scouts meeting together for the first time in months. Throughout the year our Group provided a breadth and depth of exciting activities for our young members across two Beaver Colonies (Woodland and Riverbank), two Cub Packs (Hawk and Kestrel) and the Scout Troop. Highlights of the year are recorded within the Section reports.

1[st] Leverstock Green has always provided community Scouting, engaging with the Village Association, Holy Trinity Church and local people. Whilst the joint fireworks show in November 2021 was a huge success, larger and more popular than any preceding year, sadly the Village Fair in May 2021 was cancelled and we therefore did not attend. Attendance at the Remembrance Sunday service was very high.

Our Scout Group is managed by an executive committee who oversees the proper and efficient running of the Group. All leaders and committee members are volunteers, giving their time to Scouting. None of our leaders or committee members are paid for what they do.

I would like to thank the Group’s leaders, young leaders and executive committee members for their resilience, dedication and commitment to the Group. The Covid years were very challenging and despite 2021/22 being a ‘normal’ year, returning to face‐to‐face Scouting, with all the checks, balances and risk assessments required, was not an easy task. There was an understandable degree of nervousness amongst many people.

I’d like to thank our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts who have returned to proper Scouting with enthusiasm and excitement, as well as their parents and guardians who supported the Group throughout the year.

`Beaver Colonies Report`

Beavers are the youngest members of our Scout group at 1st Leverstock Green, ranging from aged 6 – 8 years. We currently have 2 Beaver colonies, Woodland and Riverbank, which meet on Thursday and Friday evenings. The colonies are currently running with 29 young people on a Thursday night, with 2 leaders, Simon Fancourt and Rhianna Hagan, 2 parent leaders, Trina Myatt and Sandra Harding, and 2 young leaders. Friday Beavers have 25 young people, the same 2 leaders and 2 different young leaders. We occasionally have the support of Donna, from Apsley group, as well. Attendance has been somewhat sporadic though, this last year, as we try to adapt and settle into the new norm.

We have held and participated in many events since returning to face‐to‐face meetings last year, including: 2 canal boat trips, our cinema evening, several Beaver badge days, the Children in Need ramble and a number of parties. All of which have been a great success, with many Beavers attending, parent help and support from leaders from other groups.

In total, since last August, we have handed out a total of 369 Badges to Woodland Beavers, and 326 to Riverbank Beavers. We have welcomed many new faces into the group, and have seen a handful leave, as they have moved up to Cubs. Over the year we have worked towards all of our challenge badges, including the My Skills challenge badge, back in September, as we looked at healthy eating and how to be healthy. Also covering the health and fitness badge.

As we moved towards Christmas we had many craft activities and a number of games nights. We held a joint party night which was run by the Apsley leaders and was a huge success. As we moved into the New Year we lost 8 beavers from our Friday colony, as they moved up to Cubs. We presented 4 Chief Scout Bronze awards. From the Thursday colony, only 3 beavers moved up to Cubs, with 2 being presented with their Chief Scout awards. Continuing into the New Year, we worked towards our Space and Safety activity badges, also covering the My world challenge badge. We completed a number of crafts, making Valentine’s Day cards and rockets. We had a visit from the vicar, and both colonies attended joint evenings with cub packs, for Pancake Day, with 1 beaver leader supporting both nights.

As the weather improved, we started running more evenings outside, and playing games outside the hut. We completed the camp craft badge, the adventure challenge badge and completed many activities to count towards the outdoor challenge badge.

The Beavers have had a brilliant year and our thanks goes out to the young people, the parents and guardians, our younger leaders, parent leaders and adult leaders. Without the tremendous amount of work and effort they put in, none of this would have been possible. With a big thank you to Simon and Apsley Scout group for all their support over the years.

`Hawk Pack Report`

Returning after the Covid‐19 period, Hawk Pack had a busy and exciting year from April 2021 to March 2022. During the summer term our Cubs took part in many outdoor activities including wide games, a treasure hunt, fire‐lighting, athletics and five‐a‐side football.

Autumn term was a mixture of outdoor activities, including cycling, and indoors activities, including building model rafts and subsequently racing them. Our Cubs joined Kestrel Pack for the always‐ popular Search for Santa in December.

Spring term 2022 concentrated on some core Scouting skills. These included camp skills, maps and compass skills and learning codes. We ended term with an Easter Egg hunt at Phasels Wood.

Many of our Cubs went to Pack Holiday in February 2022 which helped them achieve their Adventure, Outdoors and Skills challenge badges, as well as earning some nights away.
