Scouts Programme Highlights Celebrating 75 years

Note from our Chair

In 2022 it was an honour and a pleasure to be involved with Chorleywood Scouts. In the 75[th] anniversary year for the group it was a good time to reflect on the positive contribution that Chorleywood Scouts has made to the lives of so many Chorleywood youngsters and the community at large. During the 75[th] anniversary event that took place in Scouts HQ to see 3 of our first Queen Scouts come back as lifelong friends, having met in the Scouts, and to share with us their experiences in Scouts and hear how much they got from it was brilliant.

In 2022 the Executive Committee have continued to improve the HQ building which, with a building of that age and size, continues to be an ongoing task to ensure a safe and positive environment. There remains other work to do in 2023 and beyond to keep it in line with the requirements for Scouts building. The work done to vest the building with the Charity Commission was a highlight in 2023 thanks to our Secretary and will guaranty the building stays for our future beneficiaries in Chorleywood Scouts. It is for this reason of maintaining the building, and the age and condition of the minibuses, that significant reserves are required.

Similar to other Scout groups and local community groups the volunteers that lead and help the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and the volunteers that sit on the Exec are short in supply. In 2022 the Chess Troop Leaders (Marion Walker, Alan Benton and Angus Ryall) decided to take a step back and this required a new team of leaders to come forward and this will continue to be a theme that the GSL and Exec team will need to focus on. Volunteers for the Exec and for helping lead the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts troops will need to step forward to ensure that we maintain the current participant numbers.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, thanks to all of the leaders and volunteers that have delivered a fantastic program in 2022. With their enthusiasm and skills and with some keen youngsters we look forward to the next 75 years of Chorleywood Scouts.

TROOP REPORTS – HIGHLIGHTS – BEAVERS

Liz Hall and Duncan Munro and young leaders Maddie, Charlotte and George.

In the Spring Term at Beavers we honed our scarf-rolling, tie-tying and shoelace-tying skills. Susie Turnbull came to talk about Fairtrade and we also learned about birds and made a bird feeder; several beavers did the RSPB birdwatch. We talked about teeth, sugar-consumption and healthy eating and we completed our emergency aid stage 1 badge at HQ. We have been learning all about Global Issues and we took part in a sponsored walk in aid of Water Aid in March and raised another £670 for WaterAid. We did our Faith badge at Christ Church, aided by Rev Anne Lovegrove and cooked Welsh cakes for St David’s day. The young leaders ran another fabulous fitness session. It was exciting to be able to hold our Rainforest sleepover which was cancelled 2 years ago, and we had great attendance and an excellent visit from Wild Science with real live animals, an evening hike through the ‘forests’ of Chorleywood and enjoyed making cookies and smoothies using rainforest fruits. We cooked Irish soda bread and potato soup for St Patrick’s day.

Last summer term we started at HQ using Llewellyn’s climbing wall, which has become a great feature of some of our HQ sessions. We also learned about St George. We weeded the Chorleywood orchard, cooked at Chorleywood campsite, did some orienteering on the Common and hiked around the Chenies-Latimer loop. W We enjoyed hatching eggs into baby chicks in an incubator and seeing them grow up into egg-laying birds this year. We went back to Chorleywood Common and drew maps of the woodland trails there and canoed at BLYM.

In the autumn we started at Chorleywood campsite, lighting fires and cooking marshmallows on them. We scrubbed the benches at Chorleywood Orchard – surprisingly popular (!) and did our cyclist badge on the new track at The Swillett. We made 6 Legends and Icons scarecrows for Chorleywood Orchard for the Chorleywood Scarecrow trail and were placed again in the top 10! Over two evenings we shared evidence with each other for our Collector, Hobbies, Sport and Photography badges, which was very varied and interesting. We hiked to Nathan’s farm and fed the animals there. We did a Road and Rail safety walk to Chorleywood station and drew maps of our route. We had a fabulous space-themed sleepover at HQ and earned our space badge. We took part in the Remembrance Parade and also visited Hendon aircraft museum to complete our Air Activity badge. The Scottish Dancers visited us and taught us some great dances. We sang songs and did a short Christmas presentation at Dapplemere Nursing Home. Our Christmas bring-and-buy sale raised £75 for NCH Action for Children and we enjoyed the Christmas Party!. Across the year the Beavers had lots of chances to meet the chickens, and tend and get produce from the allotment.

Welcome to Sandra Silva who has just joined us as a leader

Autumn Term 2022

During Autumn Term a new Leader team started of Rowena Raine, Dawn Symons, Louise Price, Norman Leinster, Jonathan Taylor, Jen Whinnett and Edward Hems. As part of the transition it was essential that Chess would move to a Joint program with Misbourne Troop to share assets and administration and to have a common program across all of Scouts. The team completed their mandatory training and interviews and are now learning with support from the GSL, Marion and Misbourne leaders in running their program. The first term was a good success with some great highlights.

Program Highlights:

TROOP REPORTS – HIGHLIGHTS – THAMES

Leaders: Jonathan Carter, Lise Davies & Gareth Bowsher; together with the regular help of Daniel Madiera and a weekly parent rota. Membership was 21-23 with an average 73% attendance.

The Spring term featured a mix of HQ-based activities including an indoor assault course, cooking, building giant marble runs and other scouting activities. We also did a volunteering evening at Restore Hope, Latimer, bagging up wood cut from their site, for them to sell to assist their fund-raising activities.

Summer term saw the troop carry out a varied mix of activities including camp planning, fire safety (including planning and preparation for camps), and Survival skills. Group Camp at Tolmers was well attended (13 Scouts) with activities including raft building and sailing/sinking them. We made a site visit to the Align visitor centre for HS2 in Denham, which was inspirational, and gave the troop a real insight into the detail of HS2 on a local level.

The undoubted highlight of the summer term though was 5x Scouts receiving their Chief Scout’s Gold Award, and then all moving on to Axolotl Explorers in Chorleywood. Congratulations to Sienna Bowsher, Josh Kay, Daniel Goldstein, Elyse Smith and Rhys Hanson.

Summer camp went ahead this year with 6 members of Thames attending for a week of outdoor activities in the Peak District. This included the mix of hill walking, weaseling, abseiling, cycling, working in camp patrols and basically catering and looking after themselves. It was a unique and first experience for our Scouts, as Summer camp hadn’t happened since 2019. This camp would not be possible without the unwavering planning and energy of Duncan Farnsworth and support of many leaders.

The Autumn term was a mix of scouting skills, and fun, including Derby car construction from balsa wood and then racing them, quizzes, whittling, wide games and culminated in a walk in London along the South Bank of the Thames. We were also really fortunate to be allowed to visit the SCS HS2 site in Ruislip – thanks to a parent who is involved in the project, where we saw first-hand a real site in operation including a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine). In October, 7x Senior Scouts (6 from Thames and 1 from Misbourne Troop) carried out their Expedition Challenge – planning and self-navigating a 2-day route, with camping overnight, and then a week later, presenting back to all 3 troops on their achievements.

The highlight of this Autumn term was another 6x Scouts receiving their Chief Scout’s Gold Award, and then most moving on to Sarratt Explorers. Congratulations to Lawrence Faulkner, Leo Clarke, Seth Muirden, William Allen, Joel McKechnie, and Alex Bowsher.

2022…. The first year since Covid where we could run an entire year of activities. The fact that 11 Senior Scouts attained their Chief Scout’s Gold Award in 2022 cannot be understated. These Scouts were members throughout Covid, lockdowns, and scouting from home via Zoom, and with that significant disruption to their Scouting journey, missed many traditional activities that feed into the 9x Challenge Awards that they needed to attain to achieve the Gold Award. All achieved every challenge raised to them, many of their challenges being carried out in unfamiliar and unconventional ways, taking many tasks home as homework, and requiring additional time and personal dedication that in “normal scouting times” would not have been necessary… An amazing achievement for those Scouts, and testament to how enterprising scouting and the personal dedication of Scouts rises above the chaos and challenges posed by even a pandemic.

THANK YOU to the whole Scouting team for all you do.

75[th] Anniversary Celebrations

We were delighted to welcome old and new friends of 1st Chorleywood to celebrate our 75[th] Anniversary with us.

Our Open Event on the 24[th] September saw fire lighting demonstrations, Knex playground equipment model building, mini pioneering and knot activities as well as a fabulous display of Scouting through the last 75 years in Chorleywood. We have been very generously donated memorabilia including World Jamboree badges and reports.

Amongst those who came to visit us were Ex Beaver leaders, previous Queen’s Scout award holders and neighbours who had the chance to see what went on in HQ.

Congratulations to Niam for winning the 75th Anniversary Badge Design competition

Neil

I have reviewed the accounts and I am happy with them. I have 2 questions/observations

  1. As with last year I think it would be good to keep a balance sheet/ statement of assets showing the assets the Scouts have e.g. the building, Vans, any big equipment

  2. Just to note - You have made a loss this year – I am happy this is due to spending some of your reserves on the building etc and not a going concern issue

I am happy to sign off the independent review of the 1st Chorleywood Scout Group for 2022

Loss £7,400.11

Bank balances of £86,502.80

With regard to your queries:

1.) I can confirm that all of the Covid-19 related payments received from TRDC were grants. No loan mechanism of any kind was / is involved & repayment is not required.

2.) I have no additional documentation relating to the Covid-19 payments (I have searched through emails, paper items & other documentation). The only 2 items I could find are the application & subsequent confirmation of receipt from TRDC (both attached) for the Local Restrictions Support Grant payments, but you will have already seen these. I can find no reply received 'within 10 working days' as TRDC specify but note that the payment was actually received within that same timeframe i.e. application confirmation received from TRDC 16-Feb-2021, payment received 01-Mar-2021. I do also remember that some later Covid-19 related payments were made automatically by the local authority if an application had already been made for a previous lockdown period. I believe the existence & rateable value of a registered property was also a factor in making these payments.

3.) You asked via WhatsApp about a balance sheet &, in my rush, I replied to say there are no assets; at the time, I had my Russell School PTA thinking cap on! Of course, there are some substantial assets, principally the HQ building, two minibuses & a lot of camping equipment. We don't maintain a formal balance sheet for these & nor do we amortise the assets in the accounts. However, I think you've raised a good point (annoyed I didn't think of it myself) that it might be good to have a formal asset statement detailing items of significant value. I wouldn't see this as being a part of the financial accounts but, perhaps, something that can be periodically reviewed. I've made a note to raise it at the next exec committee meeting.

4.) Email sign off is fine; can I please ask you to include your full name, qualifications if relevant and address & contact details?

And thank you once again for undertaking this audit. If you're happy to continue next year, I'll aim to provide the 2022 audit pack sometime during January 2023.
