Group Manager Report - 1[st] Cheshunt:

Following the submission of the group annual census, our numbers as of the 1st January 2024 stood at 84 youth members, we are also lucky to have a core of young leaders who have been through the sections and are now staying on to assist the sections. The youth membership is down to the fantastic leader team we have, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for the continued commitment.

I would also like to introduce new willing volunteers to the leadership team: Chris Heaton – Beaver Section

Mihir Patel – Stags Cubs

I am sure with the support of the leader team within 1st Cheshunt we can continue to grow as a group.

I would also like to thank Stacey our group chair and the committee, which is formed of leaders and parents for the help with keeping the group and the headquarters going. We have continued with fundraising, with the annual sleigh, November Fayre, Group dinner and dance and fireworks display taking place in the last year. These events have enabled us to retain subs at the current level, with the increased cost of scout membership up £3.50 per child to £56.50 per child any amount over the £50 is paid from fundraising. Along with each section being given £500 to spend on the youth members over the course of the year. We also subsidised both the December camp and Kip on a ship which took place last year. The fundraising money is also being used to replace and add to the Groups equipment which we use to run the sections and camps and we are planning a group trip to Chessington, which will also be heavily subsidised.

As a group I think it important that even though we have a healthy bank balance, that we plan to support the sections and group over the long term as we have no guarantee that the fundraising events we currently run will continue.

To free up the leaders and enable them to concentrate of the running of their sections, we do require additional parent support on the group executive. We only meet about 6 times a year for a few hours in the evening. If you are able to offer your support, It would be

appreciated.

Finally, my thanks to everyone who has helped in the last year, parents and leaders. Without your help and support the group would not be able to continue.

Paul Mills

Group Manager

TREASURER REPORT 2024:

As you can see, we still have healthy balances. HQ income has improved thanks to U3A liking our hall and holding more classes.

We were also fortunate to have £1000 donation from Cheshunt Horticulture Society when they disbanded.

The fundraising committee has been working very hard and along with the Leaders raised: -

£1083 Xmas Fayre

£7707 Fire Works

£2040 Santa Sleigh (after all donations and expenses)

£1000 Dinner Dance

£1707 Sponsor walk

I think everyone, including the children who helped on the Santa evenings, deserve a round of applause.

Fireworks and the Santa Sleigh are our biggest fund-raising activities but going forward, due to how often health and safety changes occur, we may not be able to do them for many more years so are looking for fresh ideas and help. In 2025 we are looking at selling firework tickets differently as leaders and trustee’s are having to give up even more weekends.

Fund raising gave each section £500 towards extra activities + £1000 towards the group trip to Chessington. They also gave £200 to brownies for giving up a Tuesday evening to help.

Headquarters income is down from 2023 as we lost our Saturday morning dance class but towards the end of 2024 U3A increased their classes. On the accounts HQ income does not include the 12 x £160 the group transfers over as our contribution towards up keep.

As the HQ was built in 2016 and we could only afford cheaper options, there are going to be some large expenses over the coming years. During 2024 we replaced the back doors and heating, which after a few teething issues we hope will be more cost effective and be more user friendly.

– Group Chair AGM Report for January December 2024

Well, it’s been a good year at 1[st] Cheshunt scout group filled with activities for the children and some great fundraising for the group.

It has been lovely to see the enjoying activities including a great turn out for the remembrance parade and seeing everyone looking smart.

I would like to give a big thank-you to all the leaders, helpers and Trustee members that work so hard and give up their time for 1[st] Cheshunt Scout Groups members. It’s not just the hours on a section night they give up, but the evenings planning a fun packed programme for all the children to enjoy and the help they give for all the fundraising too. We would really like to have a few new parents to join our Trustee Board to help oversee how the group is run and help with fundraising events. Would be lovely to see some parents from each section to be involved.

For the group to continue to thrive and raise money for the group and children, we need to have some parents to help. We are very lucky at 1[st] Cheshunt to have a great group of leaders that help with all our fundraising events and organizing them. It would to be great to see some new friendly faces to join our Trustee Board to help us with new events and current fundraising activities. It’s important to be able to do our fundraising to help maintain our HQ, subsidise activities and getting equipment that supports all your children and their experiences in scouting. Throughout the year we have manged to subsidise some camps for our children, and new equipment for all sections to be able to use.

So please note this year we are hoping to hold our fireworks display, a Christmas Fayre, and of course Santa’s Sleigh. After the meeting, I will be coming round to chat to you all and see what opportunities there are for yourselves to support the group this year.

So, after 5 years of being chairperson for the group, and after some great memories and experiences with the group, it is now time for me to step back and let someone else enjoy the role. If there is anyone that would like the opportunity to step up and get involved with 1[st] Cheshunt come and talk to me or any of the leaders.

Again, a Big Thank you to everyone that has supported the group this year and I look forward to hearing about all the activities in 1[st] Cheshunt in the next year and cannot wait to see all you parents supporting the group and joining the trustee board this year.

Stacey Group Chair

BEAVERS REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2024:

What a fantastic year we have had.

Every week we try to have a varied programme, having fun, learning new things and working towards badges. We had fun at Tolmers scout campsite burning off energy on the trampolines and revolving wall plus finished their emergency aid badge by putting both Jon and Chris in the recovery position. End of term we went on a boat trip at Broxbourne.

Over the year we also we helped 7 beavers obtain their Bronze challenge awards.

We also had a visit from the local police. We held 2 sleepovers where the Beavers cooked their dinner, prepared their breakfast, learnt kitchen safety and earn’t their cook’s badge

In June we had our annual parent and child camp. (pictures on the notice board)

During the year we also joined other Beavers within East Herts, going to the Science Museum, on a Ghost Hunt in October and Christmas party in November. As District Beaver Leader it is a pleasure to see so many of our Beavers taking part in these events We also joined others within the group and went to Chessington World of Adventure. From comments we received they all seemed to enjoy these activities.

As you can see, we have had another busy year ending the year with 2 fund raising events. In November, after the Remembrance Day parade, we held our quiet night where we raised £18.60 for the British Legion and the last 2 weeks of term we helped on the Santa Sleigh.

We would like to thank Beavers and parents who helped at all our fundraising events during 2024.

We have had invaluable help from our young helpers Willow, Kaleo, Evie and Ellie. Unfortunately, Evie had to leave due to schoolwork pressure and Ellie will be going at the end of the summer term.

My thanks, as usual goes to Rose, Chris, Tracy and Jon, who make our group one of the best in East Herts.

Jon & Tracy were looking to retire summer 2025 but have decided to stay although they may not be able to attend each week. Chris unfortunately is in the same position.

Sadley Rose will be leaving at the end of the summer Term but is happy to help occasionally with fund raising events.

We therefore may need to start a parent rota in September 2025.

As I write this report we have already started on a fun, busy start to 2025

Val

This past year has been an incredible adventure for the cubs, filled with fun and excitement, and we owe a huge thanks to our leader, helpers and young leaders who supported us throughout the journey. A big thank you to our fantastic cubs for making it all so memorable!

In January, we kicked off the year talking about the Scottish celebration, burns night with a delicious homemade meal of haggis and sweet potato mash made by our brilliant leader Jamie! February brought creativity to the forefront as we crafted vibrant lion masks and celebrated Pancake Day with stacks of questionable pancakes, too much sugar, and lots of chocolate sauce. March was all about nature, as we built bug hotels, providing cosy homes for our little friends, while April had us getting into the Easter spirit by making delightful chocolate nests filled with treats.

As May rolled around, we enjoyed the excitement of Thriftwood camp. Our Thriftwood Camp is full of stories about all the awesome stuff the campers got up to during their stay. There were tons of teamwork going on as the kids worked together to complete different tasks and cook their own dinner on the Saturday night. They got their hands dirty running around the forest and gathering firewood. The campers were always on the go with fun things to do. They went on hikes through the woods, crate stacking, rock climbing and loads more. The lake was a blast for the kids paddling around in kayaks and jumping into the water at the end. And of course, no camping trip is complete without a visit to the gift shop to load up on souvenirs. In the evenings, the whole group and other groups from around the area, would gather around the crackling campfire, singing goofy songs, telling spooky stories, and gazing up at the star-filled sky. By the end of the trip, everyone had learned some new skills and left with awesome memories of their time at Thriftwood.

June was a memorable month, marked by our very first sleepover at the HQ, complete with tasty chips and a movie night that kept us entertained until the early hours. In July, we took a thrilling trip to Chessington World of Adventures, where rides and attractions filled our day with joy and excitement.

September saw us having a unique sleepover aboard the Golden Hinde in London with the Thursday night cub pack, a historical experience that was both fun and educational. October brought our much-anticipated messy Halloween night, where costumes and chaos reigned supreme. In November, we participated in a Remembrance Day parade, with the children looking sharp in their smart attire, honoring the occasion with respect. Finally, December wrapped up the year beautifully as we walked with Santa and his sleigh around Cheshunt, spreading Christmas cheer and joy to everyone we met. WHAT A YEAR!!!

As some of you are aware a fresh team member has come aboard, while a seasoned leader has stepping down. Our new helper Nathan brings a wave of enthusiasm and new ideas to the pack and we are very grateful that he has joined us in our adventures. It's bittersweet to see our long-time leader and friend, Santo has move on. Santo has always had a packed schedule fixing all our cars, yet somehow managed to make it to every Wednesday night

meeting, camps and hikes. I speak on behalf of everyone at 1[st] Cheshunt, we wish you all the best for your future and we’ll see you soon or when our cars break down.

Lastly I want to say one last thank you to both Jamie, Santoand our amazing young leader Mia for pushing me along in this journey. We have made an incredible team over the past 4 years and you have made me laugh every second of the way. As for Jamie and Nathan you guys are keeping me on my toes however, I would not change it for the world. Thanks again everyone!!!

1[st] Cheshunt “Stags” Cub Pack 2024 Report

What another jam-packed year! We started the year working towards “Our Skills” Challenge badge where the cubs learnt about how the human body works and the importance of healthy eating. They gained their Emergency Aid badges by completing a number of tasks including applying bandages and putting each other into the recovery position. We enjoyed a Highland Feast of haggis, mashed potatoes and baked beans, with Scottish shortbread for dessert, all washed down with some “Scottish Whiskey” (Irn-Bru) when we celebrated Burns Night. We then felt the love by baking heart shaped biscuits for Valentine’s Day and the cubs took a go at writing poems (I’d like to share one of them at the end).

The following term saw the cubs enjoy an evening of fun-fair games and circus tricks, including plate spinning, bottle hoop-la and tin can alley. Prizes were won by everyone, and they all went home with a box of popcorn in true fun-fair fashion. We had a visit from the local police to learn about how they support our community, and they all loved the sirens going off (they were very loud!). The cubs also played a game of community bingo, where they had to mark off local shops and buildings found in and around The Old Pond. We learnt about World Turtle Day and the importance of preventing water pollution. The cubs made a giant sea turtle model made from recycled plastic and cardboard. We also visited St. Mary’s Church to gain an understanding of Christianity. This all worked towards “Our World” Challenge badge. Our annual camp at Tolmers, was very much enjoyed by all who attended where we had a 3-hour excursion through the woods ending at the mud slide. We also partook in the climbing wall, archery and shooting. We done some backwoods cooking including making bread and of course, s’mores.

In September we went on a trip to Chislehurst Caves and got to experience complete darkness! Soon after this trip, we teamed up with the cubs from Badgers and spent the night on The Golden Hinde. During the day we walked around London taking in the local sites like Temple Bar and St. Paul’s Cathedral and visited the Clink Prison Museum and Horniman Museum. We then returned to the boat where the cubs got to experience life on the Golden Hinde including what it was like to work on the ship (navigation skills, medical skills, canon firing) and also the sleeping quarters and rationings. Despite it pouring down with rain during the night and some of the leaders waking up with a waterfall next to them due to the ship leaking, most had a pretty good (and dry) night’s sleep. Definitely a trip to remember!

Towards the end of the year, the cubs celebrated the Hindu festival of light, Diwali by making sun catchers and also celebrated the Jewish festival Sukkot, making a sukkah and eating traditional foods eaten at this time. We honoured Remembrance Day by making remembrance candle holders and attending the Remembrance Day Parade, where once again, all in attendance were well behaved, respectful and did 1[st] Cheshunt proud.

To celebrate World Hello Day, the cubs had the challenge of matching up different country flags with the accompanying word for “Hello” in the native language. The cubs talked about what they were thankful for on Thanksgiving and created a “Thanksgiving Tree” and also had fun playing “pin the hat on the turkey”. To end the year we made some Christmas crafts and joined in the Santa Sleigh where Father Christmas, followed by his elves and Frosty the snowman spread some festive spirit.

As always, I am thankful for Millie and Paul Fletcher for their continued support and help. I would also like to thank Mihir, who joined us last year and has helped with running meetings. I’d like to thank Colin, whose commitment has been invaluable, and also a thank you to Vicky, our young leader who is always up for anything and Havana, another young leader who joined us in November. A big thank you also goes out to all the cubs and parents, and we look forward to another year of fun. Thank you all!!

Bex

– 1[st] Cheshunt Scout Section Yearly Report for January December 2023:

2024 was a great year for our Scouts, with plenty of opportunity and variety for them to take part in with our Group and with fellow Scouts across the East Herts District. The year also saw our Scouts winning many awards and competitions.

January saw us visit a new location in the Peak District for our hillwalking weekend. This allowed to take several new walks and locations.

May saw us have a fantastic weekend at Thriftwood Scout camp with the Cubs. A weekend that was action packed and again we were blessed with fantastic weather. Activities included Kayaking, climbing and a challenge of an extensive list of tasks.

The summer term also allowed for us to have some excellent activity evenings at Tolmers which included rafting, rifle shooting, archery, and some orienteering activities. This acted as a training prelude to July’s Silver Buckle competition weekend. Which saw us taking part in competitions and tasks against other teams of Scouts in the District. This was a successful event, and we one many elements of the competition and for the first time in 30 years we brought the top prize and won the event.

September, we took part in the district fishing competition at Southend Farm in Waltham Abbey and half a dozen Scouts completed the East Herts survival skills weekend, this included building shelters to sleep out in and skinning & stewing rabbits.

In October we took part in Scarefest for the first time at Gilwell, everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

In November we had an excellent turnout for our Remembrance Day parade.

December was a busy month; we got out and supported the Santa Sleigh tour and finished the year with a night of Quasar.

All of this has been made possible with a massively supportive group of Young Leaders and Vas who became an adult occasional helper, all who have helped on section nights, Camps and activities throughout the year.

Paul, Billy, Brad, Rob, Vas and Martin.
