As Assistant District Commissioner I have two bronze awards to give out, this is the highest award a Beaver can earn however one of my Beavers is not here this evening to accept. I would like to say well done to James who is here to accept his award. We think all our Beavers should win an award for getting through this last year. We have two trophies to award the first is for Young Beaver of the Year goes to our mother hen of the colony. Nothing is too much trouble for her she is always smiling and helps others without being asked so congratulations to Libby! Beaver of the year is not going to one person but instead to three, they have become great friends whilst with us and like Libby nothing is too much trouble, congratulations to Frankie, James, and Jake.

**Cubs – (Badgers)** – Santos – “Thank you Paul Mills for Guiding me through as I became Akela when I took over the Wednesday Group. Thank you to parents and all the cubs, we started with six and now have over twenty-five which is amazing. Thank you to Jamie my right hand and to Caitlin for helping, they’ve both been fantastic. Also big thanks to Olivia and Mia who have been a massive help this year.”

Caitlin has chosen the awardees for the Badgers, and we have three awards to give out, Young Cub of the Year goes to someone who started in February very quiet and shy and took a step back, since then they have come completely out of their shell and always joining in, a polite and well-mannered Cub, congratulations to Oscar! Cub of the Year goes to two cubs both starting off very shy and reserved and now they get involved with games and are well mannered great cubs. Congratulations to sisters Sophie and Charlotte! The final award goes to Cub of the month a very polite, well-behaved cub who always joins in and has also been to camp with us. Congratulations Michael!

**Cubs – (Stags)** – Bex – “Big thanks to Reg for his guidance over the years and I will take this knowledge with me as I take over from him. Thank you to Millie my assistant leader taking over when I am not there and thanks to Colin and Jordan for all their help. And of course, to all the cubs and their loyalty to us”.

A special mention of Cameron who has grown so much over the last year in his own personal challenges and should be immensely proud of what he has achieved. Young Cub of the Year has become a more confident cub and always join in despite their reservations. They are polite and help others. Congratulations to Ruby! Cub of the Year is always first to volunteer and look out for everyone. Congratulations Albie!

**Scouts** – Billy – “Its great to be back face to face after COVID, we have a great scouting troop of over thirty kids which we couldn’t lead without Paul, Rob and Brad. We have two to three young leader, and we are all happy to be back and looking forward to the next year.”

Our award is slightly different as the scouts vote it themselves with an online form that they access to give a reason someone should be voted. Scout of the Year “when I joined the Scouts, I was terrified, this person became my friend and helped my confidence. She’s kind, helpful and a good friend” She’s also a committed long-term member of the Scout’s association. Congratulations Mia! ## Group Manager Report - 1[st] Cheshunt:

Following the submission of the group annual census, our numbers as of the 1[st] January 2023 stood at 84 youth members an increase of 6 from the previous year, we are also lucky to have a core of young leaders who have been through the sections and are now staying on to assist the sections. The increase in youth membership is down to the fantastic leader team we have, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for the continued commitment.

I am sure with the support of the leader team within 1[st] Cheshunt we can continue to grow as a group.

I would also like to thank Stacey our group chair and the committee, which is formed of leaders and parents for the help with keeping the group and the headquarters going.

We have continued with fundraising, with the annual sleigh, November Fayre, Group dinner and dance and fireworks displaying taking place in the last year. These events have enabled us to retain subs at the current level, with the increased cost of scout membership up £3 per child to £53 being paid out of the fundraising, along with each section being given £500 to spend on the youth members over the course of the year. We are also subsidising both the December camp and Kip on a ship which take place this year. The fundraising money is also being used to replace and add to our equipment which we use to run the sections and camps and we will shortly be ordering a trailer to help with transportation of equipment to camps.

As a group I think it important that even though we have a healthy bank balance, that we plan to support the sections and group over the long term as we have no guarantee that the fundraising events we currently run will continue.

To free up the leaders and enable them to concentrate of the running of their sections, we do require additional parent support on the group executive. We only meet about 6 times a year for a few hours in the evening. If you are able to offer your support, It would be appreciated.

Finally my thanks to everyone who has helped out in the last year, parents and leaders. Without your help and support the group would not be able to continue.

Paul Mills

Group Manager

TREASURER REPORT 2022:

As you can see, we still have healthy balances, but this is chiefly thanks to Broxbourne Council who have supported us during the pandemic by donating £12k in 2020, £16,097 during 2021 and a further £2667 in 2022 which shows under fundraising. In September we transferred £19,000 from the fundraising a/c to the HQ account to help with running costs and buy a new front.

HQ income has improved although we lost a regular user part way through the year, we now have 2 new ones plus an existing one has increased her hours.

The fundraising committee has been working very hard and along with the Leaders raised: -

£1147 Dinner Dance

£852 Xmas Fayre

£12982 Fire Works

£2556.54 (even though we had to cancel 1 week due to the unforeseen snow)

I think everyone deserves a round of applause.

Fund raising paid the annual capitalisation fees of £3900 plus gave each section £200 towards activities.

As a result of HSBC starting to charge us £5 per month per account, plus cheque/cash fees we took the decision to transfer the accounts to Nat West Business account with dual control internet banking which meets the scout association 2 signature rules.

We just had 3 accounts. HQ, Group and Fundraising but at the end of the year we transferred £30,000 into Nat West savings to try and recoup some of the £177 bank charges we paid HSBC during the year.

As you can see, we fortunately have healthy bank balances, but we do know as the HQ was built in 2016 there will be large expenses to be paid out over the coming years replacing some of the items cheaper items we could only afford at the time.

Val

Treasurer.

## BEAVERS REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2022:

## What a fantastic year we have had.

Every week we work towards badges and completed Disability, Heath & Fitness, Sports, Community, Explorer & in preparation for camp plus the school holidays Safety.

We completed My World and Outdoor challenges. We also learnt our promise in another language.

We managed to get 6 beavers through their Bronze challenge awards.

We celebrated Burns night, made dragons for Chinese New Year, made & ate pancakes for Pancake Day. We celebrated the Queens Jubilee and, much to mum’s delight, we held our Mother’s Day Tea Party where the children entertained their mums, made, and served them tea.

We had visits from the Police when the kids tried on different uniforms. From Billy (scout leader) who frightened the life out of the leaders with his dummy model dressed in uniform and hiding in the meeting room. The children again enjoyed trying different things and then we had a visit by friends from Bonney grove School who bought along their different reptiles. We were surprised by how many wanted to hold the tarantula (Rose made a run for it) and snakes.

We had fun evenings at the Fire station and Tolmers Scout camp where we celebrated American Independence Day.

In June we had our annual parent and child camp. Unfortunately, we had heavy rain on Saturday night. We only had a couple of children who were frightened. We had one parent that had only bought a single skin tent with him. Several parents picked it up with child asleep inside and transported it into the dinning shelter. The surprising thing is the child was still asleep and didn’t know a thing about it in the morning. We did have an extra family arrive. When we woke around 6 in the morning there was a mother goose and her chicks inspecting the tents.

We were due to go to RAF Hendon, but the numbers were low, so we postponed it and went with the cubs in October. It was here we presented 4 of our bronze awards beside the Lancaster bomber. This was very appropriate as the Beavers had been watching the Lancaster Bomber being built by the scouts for Remembrance Day display at HQ.

We supported 2 District Beaver events. I was a craft afternoon in October and then finished the year at Wild & Wacky in Harlow.

We would like to thank the Beavers and parents who contributed chocolates which we used to make 2 hampers for raffles at the Dinner Dance & Christmas Bazaar plus the food donations which we took to a local food bank. Also, for your valued help on the Santa Sleigh trips which were unfortunately cut short due to the bad snow.

As you can see, we have had a fantastic, busy year but we have been over our numbers so that we can nearly as many off the waiting list following COVID delays. Out waiting list is still long and I am unable to take anyone who is aged 7 years old or over.

My thanks go to our young leaders Fred & Havana, to Rose, Tracey and Jon who make our group one of the best in East Herts.

Looking forward to having another busy year in 2023.

Val

## 1st Cheshunt Annual Cub (Badgers) Report January - December 2022:

Another year has gone by, and we are still growing as a group.

Before we have even started the new year, I get the Cubs ready for when we come back with some challenges to do in and around the house to complete their skills badge.

As always Cubs with their enthusiasm and parents ready with their cameras to take pictures, we had Cubs tidying their rooms, making teas and coffees, peeling vegetables, clean windows, lay a table, etc.

WAIT! was this really towards a badge or just an excuse for the Cubs to help out at home?

Honesty it was a Badge to teach them everyday life at home and as always, they did an amazing job.

As a BIG thank you to all the Cubs for helping with the Santa Sleigh I promised I would take them out, so instead of meeting at HQ we all went to JUMP CITY, as expected the Cubs loved it. (Think Jamie had a cheeky go as well) HAHA.

Pizza bread making was next on our list so with the help of my lovely wife Rose, the Cubs got stuck in squeezing tomato puree onto bread then adding cheese before it was off to the oven to bake. More cheese on the floor then on the bread but who cares, the Cubs had fun and another badge earned.

Safety at home was the next task, so Caitlin took to this one and printed some potential dangers around the house for Cubs to identify.

Easter and half term done it was time to concentrate on Camp.

Thriftwood here we come! Cubs as expected were amazing everyone had fun did and saw things they never thought they would. (like seeing Jamie capsize in a Kayak). Brilliant weekend away.

Back at HQ and with lovely weather we took the Cubs outside to cook on BBQ’s. No burnt fingers so all went well.

With the weather still on our side and with the help of a parent we decided to take the Cubs to Lee Valley for a nice long hike to soak up all the lovely natural surrounding with the bonus of a hotdogs at the end.

Fire station visit but unfortunately it got cut short due to an emergency call out, shame but always a next time.

Another well-deserved activity booked for the Cubs, this time shooting and archery at Tolmers, as expected great turnout.

Not my cup of tea, but a very kind couple came to HQ with deferent types of animals for the Cubs to see. Amazing

Group outing and we all went to RAF Hendon for the day, fantastic day lots to see and learn about different planes and as always very well behave Cubs. (don’t think Caitlin enjoyed this one).

Remembrance Day was a great turn out lots of people came to see the parade and we even made the local paper.

None of this would be possible without the amazing team effort everybody does no matter how big or small their role is, but especially the effort the parents take in participating and encouraging their children. THANK YOU to every single one of you and a MASSIVE THANK YOU to my Cubs for making my Wednesday evening so pleasurable.

I also have to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to my team leaders Jamie & Caitlin and my young leaders Mia, Olivia & Cameron.

## 1[st] Cheshunt “Stags" Cub Pack 2022 Report:

We started 2022 by donning our safety goggles and becoming Scientists! We made “chemical” reactions using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda which didn’t cause too much mess, so we must have got our measurements pretty spot on! We did however, make a mess when it came to “Spaghetti Heights”. Using dried spaghetti and marshmallows, it was a race against the clock to see who could build the tallest tower without it falling down. The clearing up afterwards was a nightmare and the endless spaghetti still being found despite multiple sweeps of the broom has firmly put this activity to the “last resort box” for the foreseeable future! The term ended with a Pack favourite of S’mores.

During the summer, the cubs completed the Environmental Conservation and Global Issues badges to increase their awareness on how our everyday actions affect our planet and what we can do to help. When learning about survival, the cubs made shelters out of cardboard boxes. We then found our green fingers and completed the Gardener and Naturalist badges, by identifying common birds, learning about eco-systems and then looking for minibeasts in the hut garden – we found woodlice, ants, beetles, spiders and slugs! The cubs also took it in turn to take care of a bird bath and ensuring it was filled with clean water.

Our annual camp went ahead at Tolmers, and as always, was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who came. We partook in cub skills including fire-lighting, backwoods cooking and woodland expeditions running up and down the craters and ditches, and of course the mudslide! We also enjoyed the Climbing Wall, Shooting and Archery.

The term ended with a visit to Scott’s Grotto in Ware, a truly magical place where tunnels and rooms are decorated in a variety of shells, fossils and stones. In complete darkness and armed with just a torch, the cubs and leaders had a lot of fun finding their way through the tunnels and playing “hide & seek” in the alcoves.

Autumn term saw the cubs “taking to the skies” when they completed the Air Activity badge on their visit to the RAF Museum in Hendon. Here they could explore planes and learn about the different aircrafts used throughout history. We also held a small ceremony where a number of the 1[st ] Cheshunt group were awarded their Chief Scout Award in front of a Lancaster Bomber!

The annual Remembrance Parade went ahead and finished with a 1[st] Cheshunt group photo outside HQ in front of our impressive remembrance display where each group helped towards making a model Lancaster Bomber complete with a poppy trail. It truly was a sight to behold and everyone should be extremely proud of their achievement in creating this.

End of year had the cubs making Christmas crafts and spreading some Christmas cheer by joining in the Santa Sleigh.

I would like to thank Millie and Paul Fletcher in their continued support and to Jordan and Colin for helping out with games/activities. A big thank you, as always, to the cubs and their parents and look forward to more fun filled activities in the coming year. Thank you all!

Bex

## 1[st] Cheshunt Scout Section Yearly Report for January – December 2022:

So 2022 was another action packed year for our Scouts, with plenty of opportunity and variety for them to take part in with our Group and with fellow Scouts across the East Herts District.

January saw us return to Castleton in the Peak District for our hillwalking weekend. Saturday was an extremely blustery day for our day out walking but 24 hrs later, the Sunday was a complete contrast, with some beautiful and unseasonably warm weather.

February carried on with a walking theme, the Scouts navigated from Bury Green out to Crews Hill and back to our HQ for a sleepover and breakfast.

May saw us have a fantastic weekend at Thriftwood Scout camp with the Cubs. A weekend that was action packed and again we were blessed with fantastic weather. We also saw some outstanding behaviour and respect towards the Scouts younger section cousins, Cubs -Badgers, which was lovely to see.

The summer term also allowed for us to have some excellent activity evenings at Tolmers which included rifle shooting, archery, rafting and some orienteering activities. This acted as a training prelude to July’s Silver Buckle competition weekend. Which saw us taking part in competitions and tasks against other teams of Scouts in the District. There were a few finalists from our teams for the rifle shooting and archery.

September we took part in the district fishing competition at Southend Farm in Waltham Abbey and again as a District our survival weekend. This entailed the Scouts building shelters to sleep out in, maintain fires for cooking all weekend, undertaking tasks building camp gadgets and impressively skinning and preparing rabbits for stew.

In November we had an excellent turnout for our Remembrance Day parade.

December, not only did we manage to get out and support the Santa Sleigh tour, We went out on a nigh time hike, walking from Cuffley back to our HQ with a sleepover and breakfast.

Who says kids are only interested in Gaming and technology.

Finally, we finished the year with a large number of Scouts, over 30. We shall see what 2023 brings.

## Group Chair AGM Report for January – December 2022:

Well, it’s been a good year at 1[st] Cheshunt scout group filled with activities for the children and some great fundraising for the group.

It’s been lovely to see the enjoying activities including a great turn out for the remembrance parade and seeing everyone looking smart.

I would like to give a big thank-you to all the leaders, helpers and exec members that work so hard and give up their time for 1[st] Cheshunt Scout Groups members. It’s not just the hours on a section night they give up, but the evenings planning a fun packed programme for all the children to enjoy and the help they give for all the fundraising too.

For the group to continue to thrive and raise money for the group and children, we need to have some parents to help. We are very lucky at 1[st] Cheshunt to have a great group of leaders that help with all our fundraising events and organizing them. It would to be great to see some new friendly faces to join our exec committee to help us with new events and current fundraising activities. Its important to be able to do our fundraising to help maintain our HQ, subsidise activities and getting equipment that supports all your children and their experiences in scouting.

So please note this year we are hoping to hold our fireworks display, a Christmas Fayre, and of course Santa’s Sleigh. After the meeting, I will be coming round to chat to you all and see what opportunities there are for yourselves to support the group this year.

I would like to say a big thank you to Sarah Barford who has been our Group Exec Secretary, for all her hard work the last few years and has stepped down from the role. This does mean we are looking for someone to fill this role and help support the Group in its management. If you are interested in this, or any other ways of supporting the Group please come and speak to any of us at the end of the formal meeting.

Again, a Big Thank you to everyone that has supported the group this year and I look forward a more active Scouting year and can’t wait to see all you parents supporting the group and joining the exec this year.

Stacey

Group Chair
