Trustees' Annual Report for the year ended 31 December 2021

Chair's Statement

2021 was another challenging year for 1st Radlett Scout Group but with some great successes too. With the pandemic continuing to disrupt our regular scouting activities (although we did return to face to face meetings in the second half of the year), we took the opportunity to undertake further improvements to Kent Lodge. More on this a little later.

Our Beaver section has struggled throughout the pandemic with Peter, the assistant leader, admirably holding the fort, delivering an online program with a return to face to face meetings in September. We are grateful to Sue Dickson, our former Beaver leader, who stepped in to help manage the weekly meetings that Peter had planned and prepared. We are actively looking for a leader and more adult helpers for the Beaver section. We have re-built the section up to the current 12 Beavers and 9 of them earned their Chief Scout Bronze award.

Our Cubs section, lead by Anna, Andrea and Sarah is thriving with a full compliment of 24 Cubs. They are all working towards their badges and we had 6 Cubs attend the County Bushcraft day, lighting fires, cooking on them and making rope. I am sure you will also have seen the fabulous bug hotel that they constructed just outside the entrance. Whilst we have not been able to have a camp for over 2 years, the cubs will be starting to work towards it with a sleepover at the HQ in July. 5 Cubs earned their Chief Scout Silver award in the year.

The Scout section, lead by Maddie, Joe and Lauren has 29 members working towards badges including communicator and environmental conservation with some finalising their Chief Scout Gold awards. Two scouts, Tom Patten and Ben Rowbotham have been selected to represent the district at the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea in July 2023. Congratulations to them. We are delighted to note that Maddie received a commissioner's commendation in recognition of her hard work in ensuring that our scouts are most engaged in district activities. Many congratulations to Maddie. We have held some joint evenings with Explorers ahead of some of our scouts moving up and we are also currently working out how we can re-start camps for the Scouts.

As I mentioned above, we took the opportunity of the lockdown restrictions to continue refurbishing Kent Lodge. I am sure you will all have noticed the fabulous new entrance and disabled access ramp, construction of which was supported by Aldenham Parish Council. We have also completed the refurbishment of the hall and meeting room, re-tarmaced the whole site, installed new outdoor lighting and had a new efficient boiler fitted.

We have a few more improvements to complete this year including fully automating the disabled toilet door, installing a defibrillator and improving signage and notice boards.

As we recover from the pandemic and get back to some sort of normality, we urgently need to recruit new leaders and helpers for Beavers and, looking forward to later in the year, we will need more support with Scouts. We also need a treasurer and more parent representitives as we look to continue to modernise our facilities and activities. Please do come forward to offer your support so that we can continue to deliver a fantastic experience to our young people.

I'd like to extend my thanks and gratitude to all of our leaders, helpers and committee members. They are all volunteers and give up a huge amount of their own time to make the scouting experience memorable for all of our members.

Finally, as Kent Lodge celebrates it's 55th birthday, we are proud to formally re-open the building in it's newly refurbished splendour. We have a real community asset that we can be proud of and we will be looking for new ways to share the building with other local community groups.

Gordon Dootson 7 June 2022 Chair.
