Chair’s Report

I would like to thank those who have volunteered to be part of the Board of Trustees, during the past year, for their hard work and dedication to supporting the group in providing Scouting for our young people. It has been a busy year and without the commitment of this group of people, we not have been able to make progress in so many areas.

As is often the case, much of the work of the Board of Trustees, has also included support from your section leaders, but it has been greatly appreciated that in the past year a number of parents have 1

HAMBLE SEA SCOUTS (6[th ] ITCHEN SOUTH) GROUP

also stepped into support where they have felt confident to do so.

Like the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus, much of the work of the work of the Trustees happens out of sight when no one is watching but despite this they are an integral part of the 6th Hamble Scout family, without whom we could not continue to give you all of the fantastic opportunities that we are able to offer.

This year the work has included:

As we move to the new formation of the Board of Trustees, we will be looking to extend the group of volunteers available to give a small amount of time to support scouting for our young people. In particular we will be looking for volunteers to support with, Buildings maintenance, Boat maintenance and fundraising.

Should you feel that you could support the board of trustees in any way please provide your details by emailing hamblescouts@gmail.com

Group Scout Leader’s Report

This has been my second year as Group Lead Volunteer, and I continue to be immensely proud of what Hamble Sea Scouts achieves week in, week out.

Our sections have all run full and varied programmes, as you will read in their reports — from Squirrels marching proudly in the Remembrance Parade, to Cubs raising funds for Cancer Research, to Scouts representing us at the RN Swimming Gala in Plymouth and the National Sea Scout Pulling Regatta. We have seen countless badges earned, including many Chief Scout Awards, and — more importantly — countless smiles, friendships, and moments of growth.

Boating remains at the heart of who we are, and I’m grateful to the many volunteers, parents and instructors who have made sure that every young person has the chance to get afloat safely, whether that’s pulling, kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding or powerboating. We’ve also worked hard to keep our equipment maintained and our fleet in safe working order.

Behind the scenes, the Trustee Board has been very active this year, supporting us with governance, finance, premises, and some big decisions about our fleet. Their work often goes unseen but is vital in making sure the group runs legally and safely.

HAMBLE SEA SCOUTS (6[th ] ITCHEN SOUTH) GROUP

Looking ahead, we are already preparing for Poacher 2026, the international jamboree, and planning how we can continue to provide unforgettable opportunities for every young person. We also continue to welcome new leaders and helpers, and I’m delighted to see so many parents stepping forward — extra hands really do make lighter work.

I want to close with a heartfelt thank you: to our leaders, young leaders, trustees, parents and supporters for giving your time, energy and skills; and to our young people for their enthusiasm, resilience, and good humour. Together we live out the spirit of Scouting here in Hamble — adventurous, inclusive, and rooted in our community.

Here’s to another year of fun, challenge and opportunity for every Squirrel, Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer.

Section Reports

Squirrels

Squirrels have had a fantastic year, we have 16 now which is working really well. This year we have had help from 3 Young Leaders, Josh, David and Ella. Georgia Robinson will be making a return to the leadership team after having her baby Evie.

Some highlights of this year have been

A Torch walk in the dark followed by a campfire

The Squirrels joined the beavers at their sleepover and the oldest few stayed over night.

Seven Squirrels took part in the Remembrance parade, but we will be practising our marching before this years.

We have been on lots of hikes, earned lots of badges including emergency aid, air activities, nautical skills and time on the water. We have awarded a massive 304 badges this year including 7 chief scout awards. 3 of our squirrels have earnt all of the Squirrel Challenge and Activity badges.

The Squirrels visited the Village Allotments and the Lifeboat station where our squirrels were apparently the most well behaved children that have ever visited!!

We have learnt about south Africa, Dinosaurs, Carnival, St Patrick, France and spent 3 weeks learning all about space to get our Space Badge.

The annual Squirrels on the boating day was again a great success.

Thankyou to all the parents and volunteers who have helped this year we couldn't do it without you. If anyone would like to volunteer to join the fun you would be very welcome!

Beavers

In the last 12 months we have kept our numbers at around 24 at all times. We have given out 18 bronze awards which is the top award at beavers. We have also awarded 415 other badges with more due to be awarded.

Beavers have enjoyed a varied program with boating, archery, fire lighting, triathlon training, a night about space, navigation, experiments, a night about India, craft, hikes, and lots of teamwork activities.

A trip to ninja warrior and fire lighting are amongst the Beavers favourite activities of the year. We also have had 2 excellent sleepovers. One at the hut joint with squirrels and our own at cricket camp which were both very well attended.

During the year we waved a temporary goodbye to our assistant team leader Rosy who gave birth to her baby days after her last session with us. We gained Lucy as a leader after she turned 18 but also had to wave goodbye to her a few weeks ago after she got into the Navy. We hope she can visit us when time allows. We are gaining Johanna as a leader which will enable us to start planning our next year of exciting activities.

We are well supported by our young leaders with Josh running a very successful set of evenings on space, before taking a break for his GCSEs, with both Sophie and Marty joining us this year and we hope to build on their skills over the next year.

We couldn’t manage all this without our active parent rota and the occasional help from the leaders in other sections, particularly for camps and boating. There is always openings for extra regular volunteers whether its every week or when shifts allow.

Cubs

Cubs have had another busy year of adventures, with visits to the fire station and the Royal Victoria Hospital. They have taken part in the annual Pirate Powerboating trips with Wetwheels, used their voices and pens to address their concerns by hosting a parish councillor and writing to their MP. Cubs have focused on lots of scouting skills from navigation and knots to backwoods cooking and fire lighting. They have also got involved with boat maintenance. They have learned about the world around them through festival/cultural celebrations and their Global Issues badge. They especially loved learning about World Toilet Day. And let’s not forget the fun they’ve had at Camp, Mud Run and their Jumpin Jax Christmas party. We also had two Cubs in the cast of Roverang.

Cubs has remained at capacity throughout 2024/5, with the majority of beavers moving up, continuing their scouting with us. We have awarded 15 Chief Scout Silver Awards since last September, with almost all who age out, after a minimum of 2 years in the pack, completing the award. The pack also signed up to the Hampshire Challenge Award scheme which ran through 24/25. Currently 19 of these have been awarded, with a few more nearing completion.

We have consistently had a team of 5 adult leaders and 2 Young Leader’s, whom have planned and run some great activities for our young people. Cubs got on the water 3 times this summer, taking part in a variety of disciplines - kayaking, rafting, rowing, powerboating, and sailing. Thank you to all the other volunteers who helped get the Cubs afloat this year. We couldn’t have done it without the support of the wider group.

Scouts

The past year has been full of adventure and variety for the Scouts, with our programme running strongly both at the hut and afloat.

Earlier this year Scouts focused on core skills with sessions on axes, knives, fire safety, and a memorable visit to Hamble Fire Station. We joined in District activities, including the RN Swimming Gala in Plymouth, where Scouts competed with energy and represented Hamble proudly.

From May onwards, our attention turned to the water. Over the summer we ran ten weeks down at the marina, rotating between pulling, kayaking, sailing, and powerboating. We aimed for each Scout to try every discipline at least once, while building skills towards badges by spending multiple weeks in a chosen activity. Highlights included the Treasure Island challenge, sailing sessions with controlled capsizes, and plenty of fun and games afloat.

We also competed in the National Sea Scout Pulling Regatta at Hampton Court, and Scouts at the hut took part in a shooting competition alongside regular programme nights. In September, we returned indoors for badgework, games, and challenges, and prepared for the Remembrance Parade in Netley, where attendance was excellent.

We also ran our Family BBQ at Victoria Country Park, giving parents and Scouts the chance to connect and relax together.

We are now preparing for future events such as Beach Camp and the Nutters Trophy hike in October. Looking further ahead, excitement is already growing for Poacher 2026, the international jamboree in Lincolnshire. Thanks to Sharon, we have secured extra places to give more Scouts the chance to join this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We were delighted to welcome Sharon back as Scout Leader this year. At times we have relied heavily on leaders from other sections and the support of parents, for which we are very grateful — teamwork in action, both on and off the water.

Finally, a huge thank you to all leaders, helpers, and parents for giving their time and energy, and to the Scouts for their enthusiasm and good humour. We look forward to another year of adventure together, whatever the tide — or the weather — may bring.

Treasurer’s Report and Accounts

The attached accounts have been produced through our new OSM system. This is the first year using OSM for our financial reporting, so there is still some tidying up to do to make them clearer.

Please note that the 2025/26 accounts only cover a five-month period, reflecting the changeover to the new system. We will continue to refine the layout and clarity of our reports in future years. 5
