Minutes of AGM on Friday 17[th] June 2022

at Group Headquarters, Highlands Road, Fareham, PO16 7XN

5) Section Leaders’ Reports: See AGM 2022 Report

6) Presentation of 2020 Accounts

Richard McKeown, treasurer, referred everyone to the accounts in the AGM Report.

Cash funds have gone up from approx. £35,500 in at the end of 2020, to £49,500 at end 2021, so accounts are very healthy. Income was high - in particular from covid grants, hall hire (esp Friday Night Club), solar income and mast site rental - and not much went out.

Subs will not be increased.

10[th] Fareham

Mike McHugh thanked the fantastic leadership team at 10[th] Fareham. Numbers at Scouts are increasing nationwide, after having understandably dropped during covid lockdowns, despite creative leaders. Most groups now have waiting lists.

So groups need volunteers; not necessarily in uniform. Mike’s own experience took him from sharing his sailing skills, through various other roles, to serving as District Commissioner.

Scouting gives children & young people skills for life and wellbeing, which benefits their own lives and enables them to contribute as citizens to the community.

Mike gave out Length of Service awards to Karen & Chris, and Wood Beads to Dawn.

Mike closed by encouraging all to consider volunteering.

GROUP SCOUT LEADER’S REPORT

I must start with the mention a major loss to our family. Christmas saw the unfortunate, but well earned, retirement of Panther (Ann Thomas) from Scouting after more than 30 years with the Group. During that time she has been a Scout leader, Venture Scout leader, Assistant Cub leader and, latterly, a much-loved Beaver leader. In addition, she has been our cleaner for several years. Her departure has left a very large hole in the Group and our hearts as we have “lost” a much-loved friend.

Ann was given a hearty send-off reflecting her commitment and years of service to the Group. However, life goes on and I am sure that Clare Goodman at Beavers will endeavour to replace the irreplaceable!

As reported last year, we have been without a Chair for the Committee which has created difficulties at times. However, my thanks go to all our Executive Committee who have done a sterling job once again. The good news is that we have a nominee as our one-time Chair (Paul Squire) has finished his 5-year stint as District Chair and is keen to return to 10[th] Fareham. I will be nominating him for the position later in the meeting.

The main issue with the Group at the moment is a shortage of adult leaders. While the Scout troop is well staffed, we are very short elsewhere and face the loss of Akela in the near future. We have a pressing need for new assistant leaders in the Beaver and Cub sections.

The other interesting aspect is the introduction of Squirrels to Scouting (4-6 year olds). At present we do not have a Squirrel section but would like to move towards this addition to ensure feed in to the Group and meet Scout Association requirements. However, without someone willing to take on the leadership role we are unable to create the new section.

So – the challenge is to find people willing to give up some of their time to become new leaders – particularly for Squirrels. If you know of anyone willing to make such a commitment please let us know! I could peddle the old “it’s only one night a week” theme and, to a certain extent it is, but once involved most leaders put in far more and get even more out of their input. Full training will be given (a lot being on line) and the roles are great for anyone wishing to work with children to put something back – perhaps following their own childhood activities in Scouting?

Scouting wise the group continues to thrive with;

All sections have an active programme and I am sure the young people enjoy their activities.

10[th] FAREHAM WOODLANDS BEAVERS REPORT

(Due to Panther’s departure, this report has been prepared by the GSL based on activities under her leadership.)

The Beavers have had an active programme including a number of trips, outings and sleepovers including Autumn camp, Minecraft sleepover and a submarine trip. They have also enjoyed many sorts of cooking, craft work and general scouting activities towards their badges.

In the last 12 months, 4 Chief Scouts Bronze Awards have been made to;

In addition, 140 Challenge and Activity badges have been awarded.

The Beaver section continues to thrive under Clare’s leadership with great support from Rosemary. They have 2 excellent Young leaders in India Summers and Mischa Carpenter who provide the additional leader support so essential to running the activities.

This is a period of transition for the Beaver section but I am sure they will continue to develop under the new leadership team.

10[TH] FAREHAM UPLANDS CUBS REPORT

Summer Term 2022

This was a very busy term and included plenty of badgework and our first Cub camp since COVID – this took place at Cranbury Park, which has become a favourite site for us, and was enjoyed by 23 Cubs. Later came the district camp which was enjoyed by fewer members but was a very busy weekend. The term began with a very well attended St. George’s Day parade and finished with a water-fight which has become a tradition for us.

Autumn Term 2022

At the start of this term Torie took over as Akela but found that other personal commitments prevented her from continuing beyond half-term so I stepped back up to Akela, I am hoping to move next year so the position will become vacant again. Activities this term included the District camping competition and many other fun activities including cooking on cans! We had a good turn-out for Remembrance Day parade

Spring Term 2023

The Spring term was very busy and included the District Chess and Draughts competition where Ralph won the Draughts Trophy - WELL DONE. Badgework continued at a pace and great fun was had by all.

The leadership team has changed over the year but I would like to thank Torie, Richard, Dan, Toby and Lucy for all the support I received during the year especially at some difficult times. Dan left us to work with Scouts as the meeting times fitted easier with his work commitments, Toby moved from being a Young Leader to an adult leader and Lucy joined us as a young leader. All have been invaluable in keeping the Pack going but more leaders are badly needed as Toby will be going away to University in September. A total of 315 badges have been awarded during the year including 3 Chief Scout’s Silver awards.

10[th] FAREHAM SCOUT TROOP REPORT

Another busy year for us in the Scout section. Numbers have dropped slightly we are now at 20 Scouts as we have had several new cubs arrive this year and some of our older members move on to Explorers which has certainly shifted the average age and we now have quite a young troop at the moment. Both Beavers and Cubs have waiting lists and high membership numbers so we will be getting more Cubs join us this year and we predict to have increasing numbers in 2024. We still have a waiting list for our section for which there has been no movement on due to the anticipated troop size in 2024/25.

Camping wise, we have been on a summer camp to Cranbury Park near Winchester, a great venue the cubs have used before but a new one to me personally, we will likely make use of it again in the future. We also had a winter camp at Cricket camp and a sleepover/training weekend at the hut for our patrol leaders and assistant patrol leaders.

We are looking to bring back the week-long summer camp which we first held just before Covid-19 but due to the cost of this camp we have held off from this for a couple of years due to the financial impact that covid had, and also the subsequent cost of living rises we felt smaller camps would better suit many. We also have a district camp on the horizon in 2024.

Over the course of the past 12 months we have awarded 123 badges, including 4 Chief Scout Gold awards which is the highest award a Scout can earn. It is really pleasing to be able to award these and the young people really do have to work hard to gain them. We also have sailing planned in for this summer through Alastair who is also a sailing instructor at Hill Head sailing club and he has kindly arranged a taster session for us. We are also delighted to have Finley Dicks return to us as a young leader having finished his time as a scout just before Christmas, Finley has already completed much of his young leader training and is settling in well to his new role.

I just want to close by thanking everyone who contributes to our success as a Troop. My assistant leaders Jack Hobbs, Alasdair West & Dan Hobbs. Also to Matt Raven, and to Finley Dicks our Young Leader for all your help. To our Executive Committee who keep the lights on, Steve Dean our Group Scout Leader and all our other volunteers both leaders and parent helpers. And to James Taylor our group caretaker.

We also said goodbye to Ann Thomas (panther) after a great many years service to the group and Scouting in general Ann has held many roles in the group and district and has decided to take a well earned retirement. She will still be part of our group as an occasional helper so we look forward to seeing her back in the future at group events.

Chris Clements Scout section leader.
