## **Chair’s report**

2021 started with a range of pandemic lockdown and control measures, which eased over the year, and then returned with the Delta variant. As the subsequent Omicron wave took over, we finished the year – not quite in lockdown – but with very high Covid incidents.

I start with this because it provides such a serious part of the backdrop to the last two years of Scouting at Odiham & Dogmersfield. And against this backdrop we have once again seen a continuance of Scouting, and more than that… the social and life skills that the movement brings have been more-than-usually necessary to a generation of children that have had such severe interruptions to education, socialisation, and such great pressures added to home life (home schooling anyone?!)

And it is in this context that I wish to record the immense thanks we owe to our volunteers, to parents who participate and help, and of course to the children that participate in Scouting here with us. You have been extraordinary this year. And to have maintained a complete schedule of activities, to see the growth & progression, and to see the camaraderie – at all ages – has been wonderful. A sincere and heartfelt… thank you!

Attached in this document are further details on the performance of the Group. Our financial health is good, and indeed we’d like to see greater drawdown of funds as face-to-face Scouting becomes more ambitious again. Our section numbers are strong. As is the learning, play and development offered to our members. We retain our facilities – principally the Scout Hut – which has had various upgrades and maintenance activities addressed this year (more to come in the 2022 annual cycle). And we are delighted to have seen a smooth handover at the nursery that uses these premises during the week – wishing Candy Head (the outgoing owner) a happy retirement, and Stephanie Jones (the new owner) many happy years of education ahead.

As a Group we remain critically dependent on a small number of dedicated, key volunteers. Please consider whether you, and others you know, have the capacity to offer up time to also help us run the programme of activities and administer the Group. It is rewarding in very many ways.

Alasdair Ramage June 2022

## **Scout Leader’s Report**

## _**Scouter in Charge Report**_

I would like to thank all the Leaders at the 28[th] who put in many hours behind the scenes.

We currently have:

Beavers: 41

Cubs: 39

Scouts: 18

Waiting list: 27

The group of leaders still offer all our young scouts in the area a wide variety of activities that continue to challenge our Beaver, Cubs and Scouts. Scouting continues to be a great operate for our children to try new things.

## In summary

It’s wonderful to be back to face to face with our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. I am thankful and still in awe of our leadership teams for what they continue to do.

Thank you! You are making memories for our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts that will last a lifetime!! And hopefully in turn they too will become Leaders.

In the coming year we will be looking at opening a squirrel “Dray” pack for our 4- to 6-year-olds on our waiting list so please watch this space.

As normal we do need more volunteers to help run Scouts at the 28[th] so this another thing that we will be trying to concentrate on this year.

I would also like to thank the Exec for their continued support.

Yours in Scouting

Scott Shepherd

## _**Apaches Scouts (10½ to 14 year olds)**_

What a 2021/2022…….finally back to some face to face scouting from the end of the second lock down and then cases rising so still meeting but with social distancing and face masks….. as you can appreciate it was hard keeping some of them apart by 2metres at times and much of our programme trying to be outdoors…. I would like to thank Nat, Basil and Joff (Parent) for all their time and inspiration in these times……

## **Apaches Programme**

## **Autumn 2021**

We bounced back in September 2021 with Camp prep as our first evening as restrictions were lifting… we carried out some local knowledge finding all the houses in the village that used to be pubs (Wow 14 in total) however the weather was not kind but we had hot chips from The Hampshire Arms at the end of the night to enjoy. We carried out our annual bonfire night with the explorers. We also carried out the Scout equivalent of Robo Wars with pimped up remote control cars with nails, pins and sharp sticks attached, then they had a balloon bulldog clipped to the rear of the car and the aim was to pop each other’s balloons. We ended the term with our Christmas Party and a trip to Aldershot Ski Centre for an evening of skiing, everyone made it down without falling over at least twice…

## **Spring 2022**

We had a Testing the Taste buds Challenge… our intrepid Scouts were blindfolded and fed an array of foods including: Jelly, baby food, spicy sauce, cheese and chocolates were on the menu and they all took it well in their stride…they also got to shoot the new air rifles with our GSL (Akela Scott) taking the evening. Another food evening was delivering them to Sainsbury’s water lane and setting them the A-Z shopping challenge (1 item for each letter of the alphabet and the closest to £18 won) We ended the spring term with our annual Easter Egg Hunt round the village where they got to take an egg home.

We also sent 2 teams to London to join in the Monopoly Run where over 7,000 Scouts and Guides play a live game of Monopoly running/ busing/ tubing and training around London trying to buy up roads… just like the real thing there were about 135 games with 7 teams in each game… we finished 3rd in our game which was brilliant and we had many tired legs at the end of the day and that was just the leaders…..

## **Summer 2022**

This term we have done things that go wooosh… paper air planes, rockets and learning about velocity and trust whilst trying to shoot a paper plane through a spinning hoop.

We had an evening of navigation where they had to take bearings and compass points from a hike from Dippenhall back to Crondall. We didn’t lose any which means they are improving or perhaps we were following them!!!!

We have been creative making lanterns from tin cans and monster book marks, and we have backwoods cooking, water activity and our fun water fight and BBQ to look forward to.

## **Camps**

Yes we have been camping…..you can’t keep a good Scout down!!…..

………with finally restrictions being lifted enough we got out in September Hammock Camping literally the day Scouting went back to Green and how wonderful it was you can’t get more socially distanced than swinging from a Hammock… It was so lovely to see smiling faces being able to put into action some of the skills they learnt on the day camp.

We got back to Hammerwood Campsite in Sussex for our Spring Camp over the May Bank holiday there were only a few scouts able to go and they learnt a lot over the three day camp some of the Explorers came to help and work with the scouts passing on some knowledge, they set up an assault course for them to go round and also a model hammock camp with fire pit/ovens and going through camp hygiene and knife / axe / saw. We had a great campfire with lots of songs and some talents being shown off.

We look forward to our Summer Hammock Camp in June which this year we will be sharing the woods with the Cubs so they can then see what the future may hold for them…

## **Expedition Challenge**

We also last October were able to get our eligible older scouts (Year 8-9) out to finish off their expedition challenge, this is a whole badge in one and it is like a mini Duke of Edinburgh expedition over 2 days they walked from Puttenham to Elstead, camping at Gardner’s Field, then off again from Elstead walking back to Crondall the next day with the leaders supporting as much as we could. They took a few wrong turns but all four of them succeeded in gaining this award.. we do this every other year so Autumn 2023 will be our next date

Well, I think we have been a bit busy… if you would be interested in coming to help at Scouts or in any of the other groups then please do so we can only offer one evening for Scouts as we are short on leaders and have had to let some children down…why not give it a go?

## _**Pioneers Cubs (8 to 10½ year olds)**_

It has been another strong year for the Pioneers Cub pack. The programme has been packed with lots of exciting activities. Highlights included making pizzas and going to Lazer Run and Gravity Force. The Cubs did remarkably well in the board games evening. On another evening we learnt how to fix bikes. We’ve also had special guests in to teach the Cubs about disabilities. The Cubs have covered a lot and learnt a lot. This is reflected in the number of challenge and staged badges that have been awarded. Coming out of lockdown, we were concerned that a number of the older Cubs were a long way behind in terms of badges, however, we have managed to close the gap.

A big thank you needs to go to the other leaders in the pack. Without them, the programme would not be as strong as it is. Everyone has worked really well as a team and pulled together to help the Cubs grow. So a big thank you to Sarah, Jo, Faye, Jerome and Rob. Also, a special mention here to Scott for being there and providing guidance as GSL.

If you were to look at areas we want to improve on, it would be outdoor camps. These were not permitted during lockdown and we have very few leaders with nights away permits. However, by and large, are numbers are strong, we’ve had no major injuries and every week the Cubs say how much they have enjoyed the evenings.

We are always looking for additional input, be that from parents who want to help out, or people in the community who would like to explain to the Cubs about their hobbies, interests or work.

## _**Adventure Cubs (8 to 10½ year olds)**_

Leadership team: Scott, Andrew and Jonathan

It is wonderful to be back to face-to-face scouting, seeing all our Cubs like they never stopped and welcoming a few new faces.

We have had to learn the “Grand whole” all over again which was quite challenging…

We manged to get quite few badges done and look forward to getting through loads more and helping our cubs get their Silver badge as they go up to Scouts.

This year we have also added air rifle shooting to our program with all the Adventures having a go. I look forward to starting at Thursday evening shooting group.

I would like to thank the Adventures Cubs… for being you..!!

Cubs continues to be a great place and opportunity for children to try new things, enabling them to develop skills and teamwork.

Yours in Scouting,

Scott Shepherd

## _**Kestrel Beavers (6- to 8-year-olds)**_

In the time since the last AGM, the Kestrels colony has seen a lot of our longer-standing Beavers swim up-stream. Whilst sad to see them go, we have happily had significant influx of keen new Beavers and the colony remains well subscribed.

The new influx of members has meant that pretty much the entire badge selection has been available with little risk of repetition of things already covered for the older beavers. As such we have covered a good spread of badge work including faith, space, gardening and experiments.

The programming and running of the evenings has benefitted from the input of our new assistant leader Mehal Shah aka Squirrel. She has brought a wealth of energy and experience of working with young people from teaching and continues to be an asset to the team.

The colony has made good use of Hannams Copse, having ventured over there throughout the year as part of night hikes and for wide games and bonfires as the evenings have got lighter.

The colony put on a good turn-out for the Remembrance Day and St George’s Day parades and did very well at the head of the group on the march to the church.

The Kestrels would like to extend our thanks to all of the parents who have joined us when needed. Some of the more intensive events would not have happened without their support.

We wish the Beavers a good summer holiday and look froward to seeing the them again at the beginning of the new academic year!

## **Quartermaster’s Report**

Property and other assets maintained for the use of local scouting:

- The principal asset, and principal maintenance item, is the Crondall Scout Hut (‘The Scout Hut’). This is used by the 28th Group’s Scouts, Cubs and Beavers as a primary meeting and event location, including the adjacent outdoor space. Lease arrangements are also in place for the following: District (for executive meetings and Explorers) and for Tigglet’s Montessori Nursery. This comprises storage spaces, 2 large meeting rooms, toilet facilities and a large kitchen.

- The Hut also securely houses the equipment held by this group and is also available to rent for group use.

- Maintenance activities have been delivered by several members of the exec committee over the past year as well as through the employment of some contractors.

Statement on state of assets and forward plan of activity:

- Maintenance of the Scout Hut continues with essential works running on an ongoing basis. The pandemic led to a deferment of the boys’ loo refurbishment into 2021, now complete.

- The group has funding for other projects, but these have also been delayed due to the pandemic. These will progress in due course.
