I would like to start this year’s report by thanking everyone involved in the Group for all their support and help in this unique and difficult year.

All the young people have been amazing and so have the leaders, young leaders as well as supporters and committee members. I am proud and honoured to lead such an amazing team.

Who knew that for months on end, our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts would turn up to meeting in uniform every week and sit in front of a computer screen connect to each other via Zoom and have so much fun. From Beaver robots, to Cub virtual camp, to Scouts making fabulous meals and all of the young people of course earning armfuls of badges at the same time. Well done everyone.

There have been some positives this year. We were the only Group in Christchurch and maybe further afield to actually grow in numbers. We also formed our adult support group the SBS Unit (official title Mudeford Water SAS Unit). We have our own website mudefordscouts.org.uk

We took advantage of being able to work on the building and compound with new doors , cladding, new fencing, landscaping and a new look compound area. Much better space for us and the preschool to work in. The Government grants that we have been able to undertake this work and reduce our income from subs and rent. One of our biggest successes has probably been reaching and exceeding our fundraising goal for the new sailing dinghies. We have 8 new dinghies waiting in Romsey to be delivered.

Which brings me to one of the worst parts of the year; the closure of the Hengistbury Head Centre. The centre was of course closed during the lockdown periods but didn’t return in September and we were told early in 2021 that Brockenhurst College were relinquishing the lease back to the BCP Council. The current position is that all the users have to have moved there boats and kit off site by June this year. We are currently working with the other users to allow the centre to reopen, while a new provider is found. We are also have the support of Dorset and the rest of Christchurch Scouting to find any opportunities. We hold and breath and keep finger firmly crossed.

Our waiting list for young people to join the group remains high and we are looking at opportunities to open new sections, to do this we need more adults, helping and leading. I can recommend the role so please contact me if any parents, friends or family would like to volunteer.

I would like to thank Juliet our District Commissioner for all the support that she and her team have given us this year.

And finally thanks to all our parents for inviting us into your houses this year – If you still haven’t signed up for family camp we now have well over 100 attending. Thanks and let’s hope we have a great Scouting summer

Mudeford Beaver Section report for 2020 Scouting Year.

Looking back at our programme for last year we are immensely proud that the Beaver Section rode the storm and continued to offer a great programme to our young People despite all the difficulties thrown at us all.

Our newest Beavers at that time were in fact being invested on the night that Boris announced our first lockdown and little did we know then the challenges that this would bring and the digging deep we would all have to do and the determination we would all have to find to continue to deliver an engaging programme for all our young people. All these challenges, have, in fact, strengthened our Group and respect for each other and teamwork immensely.

The Beaver Section at the time was being led by Tara (Cormorant) and her team and their experience and knowledge helped the section through their first Zoom meetings transforming toilet roll inners into magical creatures, learning songs, skills, gardener, air activities and personal challenges to name but a few and our first Virtual Camp where the Beavers camped in their dens or back gardens and cooked on fires / BBQ’s.

We were one of only a few colonies to tackle the risk assessment writing and preparation to go back to Face to Face Scouting between lockdowns spending as much time as possible outdoors crabbing, learning our green cross code, cycling and having as much social distanced fun as we all could. Tara and her team worked tirelessly to enable the Beavers to complete badges at home too. Congratulations to Charlie B , Myah, Freddie, Charlie T and Lydia who achieved their Bronze awards last year.

By the beginning of November we were back on Zoom and learnt about the Beaver animal and our Promise, built robots, deciphered codes, drove remote controlled vehicles, built marble runs and continued our badge work. Our Section Assistants Adam (Penguin) and Russell (Albatross) joined the team and supported us with planning and running of evenings.

Our new Scout Boat support Team led by Tre had a baptism of fire on our first night back again at the hut teaching Beavers to navigate using lights which they really enjoyed. We were so lucky to finish the year with a Christmas Bauble Hunt on St Catherine’s Hill.

We were all sad when Tara announced she would be stepping down as Beaver Scout Leader but delighted to hear she would be re-joining the cub team as an Assistant Cub Leader role rather than step back from our Mudeford family and it was nice for our Beavers to know she was there when they swam up to Cubs through cyberspace! A huge thank you Tara for all you have done and continue to do for Mudeford Scout Group.

Our 4 awesome Young Leaders, Sam (Dolphin), Hester (Jellyfish), Ken( Manta Ray) and Ava (Pufferfish ) continued to support us as and when they could despite their own difficulties they were facing in their mocks and exams. Our Beaver team of Leaders and helpers continued to change throughout last year as is more customary in this section and I’d like to say thank you to all the parents who have given up time to keep us afloat supporting weekly meetings as and where they can and continue to support in Cubs, Judi, Martin, Sarah, Nicole, Spencer, Cathy and Mary.

A very special thank you, to our Assistant Beaver Leader, Helen (Puffin). She steadies the ship in our colony and ensures that everyone gets a birthday card as well as all their badges and is a huge support to us all personally. Thank you also to Heron for all you have done as a Section Assistant now agreeing to go into uniform as an Assistant Beaver Leader and we wish you much enjoyment with all your training as you take the next step on your Scouting journey.

Of course there are also many others in the group who support the young people, our Executive Committee led by Jason who approved our risk assessments and supported our projects to enhance our compound and boat fundraising ,our Quartermaster Malcolm, who ensured quarantine of equipment and a continuous supply of PPE along with a lot of hard work and DIY at the hut, Our teams in the Cub and Scout Sections who share ideas and offer advice and our Group Scout Leader Brett who gave strong leadership and support to us all.

Last but by no means least - Thank you Parents for welcoming us into your homes and working hard to provide us with the most lovely Colony of Beavers and for all you have done to support the group in 2020! Mole and the Beaver Leaders

10th CHRISTCHURCH (MUDEFORD) CUBS SECTION REPORT 2020- 2021

Well what a crazy and unpredictable year! I think that we can all be extremely proud of how we have adapted to continue Scouting through the Covid 19 pandemic and still continue to do so. Our Scout motto “Be Prepared” was certainly challenged last Easter and it definitely holds even more meaning to us now if that’s possible. I can certainly say we weren’t prepared for the concept of running section meetings via Zoom last April but we definitely are pro’s now! Luckily with fantastic teamwork, our leaders pulled together quickly to get ourselves abreast of the situation. This was no mean feat as all our exciting, long awaited and desired outside activities including camping and sailing had to be cancelled and our programme completely redesigned and rethought.

So we started the new Summer term with shorter weekly Zoom sessions and made full use of the new “Badges at home” function on OSM allowing young people to upload badge evidence at home with parental assistance. As we became more competent and confident with Zoom, our teaching and games became more involved enabling us to extend our meeting time. In the Summer holidays we held a virtual “Camp at home” where attendees made dens in their homes or camped in their back garden for a few nights. We joined in activities together via zoom throughout and enjoyed an exciting family friendly programme of activities, challenges, games and a Zoom campfire! A little different from our usual camping activities but it was a lovely experience all the same.

In the Autumn and Spring terms, our section meetings bounced between weekly face to face meetings in two bubble sessions and Zoom meetings as the restrictions changed through each lockdown always making sure we had a backup plan ready to go. We reverted back to our original terms template for badges, implemented “weekly Cub challenges” and also incorporated a weekly Cub teaching slot so Cubs could teach the pack live over Zoom or a using a pre-recorded video of something of their choosing. We have learnt so many things from our Cubs including making a special pizza dough recipe, how to make a Chinese paper lantern, how to draw and paint a coy carp, how to make origami boxes and learning different knots to name just a few. We luckily were able to run our much loved Christmas Bauble Hunt up St Catherine’s Hill and we also had some Zoom meetings from different locations- one straight from Bagheera’s shed doing some of our DIY badge bits and even one from our local Vicar and his amazing team live from All Saints Church. We have learnt many new virtual games and completed many different virtual Scavenger hunts - our Cubs favourite zoom activity!

We have learnt so many new and even unexpected skills together in the last year and I’m very proud to say that even though will didn’t have all of our Cubs participating in every Zoom meeting, all our Cubs have been returning face to face and all our transfers up to Scouts have been successful. Many, many badges have been earnt and awarded and I’m extremely proud to say that the majority of our transferring Cubs have also managed to complete their Silver Awards! It certainly hasn’t been the easiest of years and all credit goes to the Cubs who showed dedication and determination to join us however and whenever they could and for all their hard work. We are all so proud of all that they have achieved in these difficult times. A massive thank you must also go to all our parents who have supported their young people and kept abreast of our ever changing plans and also to my superb team of leaders, assistants and parent helpers who continue to make our section the huge success it is.

Here’s to a better year ahead for all, Akela.

AGM Report 2020 - 10[th] Mudeford Scouts

The Troop has remained steady throughout the last year, only losing 2 Scouts.

Currently our numbers are 27 on the books and 24 attended our first evening back face to face. (21/04/21)

Thank you to the Scouts who have completed their time with the Troop and are now moving on to Explorers.

Over the last year over 150 badges were achieved by the Scouts working at home. A great achievement.

Thank you to all the Scouts, Leaders and Young Leaders who stuck with the Troop all last year, attending Zoom meetings and working on Badges at Home. Very proud of all our young people.

We have had an influx of Cubs to Scouts and we will, as a Troop, be taking a step back to basic scouting to develop all our Scouts and enjoy the outdoors as much as possible.

We have 2 camps booked so far this year, a Patrols camp at Braggers at the end of June, and a Troop camp in August at Lyons Copse.

The Troop Leaders and Section Assistants have continually supported the Troop over the last year, coming up with all sorts of ideas to keep the Scouts motivated.

To all of the adults. Thank you very much for your continued support and efforts you have made. We currently have 3 Leaders and 2 Section Assistants.

After a very unsettling past year, the Troop are grateful to all the Group and Group Committee for the continued support, directly and indirectly, managing the Group in the background.

Skip and all the Leaders.

Mudeford Scout Boating Support Unit Report 2021

The ‘SBS’ Unit was set up last year to provide a more formal structure to the Mudeford boating team, which comprises uniformed leaders, section assistants, parent helpers and Group Skills Instructors.

The SBS is part of Mudeford Sea Scouts and works alongside the existing leadership team to run the group’s boating activities for all sections.

This is a departure from the way boating has been run historically at Mudeford, as the unit is separate to the Scout leadership team.

We are fortunate to have a good number of leaders, Group Skills Instructors and parents who are knowledgeable in boating activities; many of them with external qualifications, (RYA, BCU etc.), which are recognised by the Scout Association to allow them to be issued with Adventurous Activity Permits.

The principal aim of the SBS team is to enable all the sections at Mudeford Sea Scouts* to participate in water and boating activities and to gain skills for life and confidence on the water.

The activities are split into 2 complimentary areas:

Land based sessions at TSO to teach the associated theory, rules and practical skills required to undertake water sports activities. This will also include support for boating related badge work.

Water based sessions in kayaks, sailing dinghies and power boats as appropriate to the age of the participants.

We have run a few land based sessions with the 3 younger sections this year to get them started on the Nautical Skills awards

We are looking forward to building on the skills that we have covered so far with water based sessions in the summer term.

There will also be water based training and refresher sessions for our adult volunteers to consolidate and build their skills, which can be passed onto the young people.

Trelawny Burt

SBS Unit Manager
