Beaver Leaders Section Report 2023 -2024 Frances Waghorn
Summer 2023
Beavers hit the ground running with camp cooking -popcorn, raft races on the local bunny (stream), obstacle races and pondipping and tracking on the marsh. They joined in with the Group and District for the annual Cirus trip and prepared their Fathers Day Key rings. At the end of term they collected their builders, Navigation and Adventurers badge. The weather was highly varible – it always is on a Wednesday evening and our Be prepared motto is well learnt.
Autumn term 2023
Camp fires form a theme in all sections and we start them early in Beavers – ask them whats the best wood type, fire structure – they’ll fill you in. So after starting with camp fire & pop corn we moved onto hiking around Danebury, and as the nights closed in Recycling and conservation and learnt about foods life styles and what the flags mean in Greece, Russia India & Italy. We joined in with the Group for Remembrance Sunday Service & Parade and family fireworks evening, and later in the term joined our Beaver friends in Andover for the poignant Christingle Service. We finished with a seasonal party and decorations. By the end of term we had earnt a hike and our World, Global & international badges
Spring term 2024
As the new year started we moved into first aid and who’s the most important person – You Beavers learnt recovery positions home, road, water and railway safety as well as personal & digital safety. We taught them how to use a landline phone and make an emergency phone call from a locked or mobile with no signal. They even used the red telephone kiosks in town –a week before BT removed the phones. In the process of this we did create traffic chaos as we learnt how to use the different crossings in town – apologies if you were affected. Mothersday presents were made and at the end of term we had chocolate hunts in the grounds. They made pancakes – yes they can cook & flip them safety. We completed our First Aid Safety & teamwork badges. Summer 2024
Outside again we had campfires and learnt how to pt up a Scout tent. We learnt 3 types of knots and using tiny lengths of string joined them together with the knots we’d learnt to suspended a shelter. We learnt tracking on the marsh and made rafts, had obstacle courses on the rec club and water games when it was just too hot. We finished the term at Chilbolton -ponddipping. At the end of the term we’d gained our outdoor camp & hiking badges.
My Thanks go to parents Mr Patterson, Mr --- & Mr & Mrs Snieth for helping us, all parents for stepping up when needed. Our Young Ldrs Maddie & Daniel for helping – and reading what is going on in a Beavers mind. Lastly big Thanks go to Sam Perrit who has helped us and agreed to join our leadership team
& to you Parents thankyou – without the parent helpers we would not be able to do our exciting meetings.

Summer term was as usual dominated by Summer Camp at Pony Field . We were transported to the plains of Africa to complete the Africa Challenge. We learned African drumming and dancing, had a go at textile printing, bead woggle making, air rifle target shooting, tracked big game using radios and built shelters to observe the animals . The weather was kind to us and of course much cake was consumed, songs song and chalky bottoms gained from playing in the Spinny.
The rest of the term was hiking, playing in water, back woods cooking in bags, our annual nettle challenge, knife skills, craft and navigation and a visit from the Muslin Society.
Autumn term more fires of course, Parliament Week with our MP the Rt Honorable Caroline Noakes coming out to run a mock parliament for us, Scientist badge 3 weeks of pops, bangs, wizz and fizz, Hanukkah with our special guest Mrs HB guiding us through what it is to be jewish at this time of year. We also made beautiful clay poppies to decorate the church for remembrance and finished off with making personalised popcorn machines – narrowly averting burning down the hut! Autumn camp was at Ferny Crofts where we made rafts, go carted, went caving in a bus, threw tomahawks and ziplined.
I then passed over the baton to David and Elizabeth. Mo Collins

Thanks were given to the Taylors of Wild Cherries for the use of their garden and all the speakers and our occasional helpers who come out on a Wednesday evening to help with things (often at very short notice) without ever a grumble.

Summer term 2023
The term started with preparation for our Expedition hike, we had the maps out and planned our route, settling on a starting point of Crab Wood following the Clarendon way, then the Test way into Stockbridge before an overnight stay at the Scout hut, and then continuing on down to finish at Romsey the next day. We also planted some saplings that had been given to us through the Woodland Trust along the fence line at the Scout hut. Then we had a beautiful, if slightly damp, walk in the bluebells at Bentley Woods, and our customary game of camouflage! The next week saw our annual Circus trip – many thanks to Mo for organising this, always a great evening.
We then planned and practised the meals we would be cooking on our expedition so the recipes were fresh in our minds for the following weekend when we would be coming in tired from a day’s walking to cook them! We also sent the Scouts down to the Co-op in small groups as part of this evening as it is great practice for them to work out pricing and look out for special offers etc. The expedition weekend dawned bright and sunny, and we set off through Farley Mount, with plenty of snacks and fresh legs. There were beautiful views, a historical monument to investigate, and a swarm of bees flying past all within the first few miles, but we settled into a steady rhythm and soon made it to Kings Somborne for lunch, where we were met by John with top ups of water and a chance to rest our legs for a while.
Onwards up and over the hill to drop down to the Test Way and along into Stockbridge, where we feasted on the crispy cakes we had made, and rested our feet, before the Scouts cooked their delicious tea’s. We feasted on pancakes and fruit for pudding and settled down for a game or two before bed!
We slept well and started our second day with a cooked breakfast. Our Scouts always say one of the best bits of their camps is being able to cook for themselves and decide what they eat! Some make themselves scrambled or fried eggs, some go for the eggy bread option, and it’s lovely seeing them take responsibility for feeding themselves!
Lunches made, and we set off down the Test Way towards Romsey, for part of the Expedition requirements, the Scouts walked some sections on their own in groups with Leaders at checkpoints. We had a welcome break at Poppies crafts for Ice creams (thank you Frances for treating us!), before tackling the last section through Fishlake meadows to the finish point at the Freedom Centre on the outskirts of Romsey with drinks and cakes. We walked a grand total of 17 miles, and resilience and perseverance were definitely needed on the second day for tired legs and minds!
Huge thanks to all involved in supporting us through this, Mr Cooper, Dan Robinson, Neil, Katelin, Kate Lewis and John Cocks.
The Monday evening afterwards the Scouts that took part gave a presentation to the rest of the group, and we enjoyed some games in the sunshine out at our farm!
After the half term break, we worked towards our Farming/Smallholders badge, we had several sessions out at the farm learning about beekeeping with demonstrations from Mark, and the Scouts extracting honey from the frames and taking small pots home for Father’s Day.
We grew herbs from cuttings over the term, planted wildflowers, picked and ate some of the crops in our polytunnel, and learned about how our farm runs, explored how the combines and tractors work, and watched the barley grow steadily over the season.
We also had a go at orienteering, setting up a small course in our paddock to learn map orientation skills. Huge thanks to Bernie Fowler for helping us with this and bringing his chip timing course along.

We also had a great evening of wide games at Danebury organised by Henry and Max as part of their Gold award, and a brilliant evening at the golf driving range in Grateley.
We finished the summer term off with a troop forum, games and snacks at the farm, devising a relay race to practice the water lifesaving technique of using a throw rope.
Autumn term 2023
The term started with a walk on the farm and some team building activities to get to know our new members, followed by a session on wood chopping getting our firewood ready for bonfire night. We learn how do use four different techniques safely, chopping kindling with small axes and kindling splitters, sawing small logs on a sawhorse, and chopping large rounds of wood with big axes. Next, we had an evening sculpting with clay, sewing badges on and doing the matchstick challenge, and then had a session making puppets using tools to bend metal joints to string them together. Then we had our brilliant ‘Boats and Battles’ Day Camp down with New Forest Activities in Beaulieu. We spent the morning canoeing on the Beaulieu River in the beautiful autumn sunshine, before heading to the woodland Battle Zone for Laser tag in the afternoon.
Ice creams revived us before we set off to walk through Beaulieu up to the campfire site where John and Zac met us with scrummy fish and chips round the fire. Hot chocolate, marshmallows and a game of camouflage in the dusk light finished off our lovely day, thoroughly enjoyed by all.
We night hiked, enjoyed the group fireworks display, and then had an excellent session at the army flying museum doing STEM activities provided by the aviation expert company Leonardo. We joined with the Cubs and Beavers for the AGM, and then all turned up very smartly for Remembrance Sunday service at St. Peter’s church in Stockbridge.
We had a session checking our tents in readiness for the patrol leaders camp & playing some hilarious games with dumpy bags involving lots of teamwork, we also learned about countryside code.
Then it was time for our eldest Scouts to wrap up warm and go on the Patrol leaders weekend camp organised by Hampshire Scouts. The forecast was for minus temperatures at night, and it did hit -3C at one point! But the days were sunny and crisp with beautiful late autumn sunshine, and all enjoyed it, made new friends and learned many leadership skills. The Scouts that went were noticeably more confident on the Monday evening’s afterwards when organising games and activities, and it was a very worthwhile experience despite the freezing temperatures!
We had a lovely festive evening of old-fashioned fun at the Mill Arms skittles alley, with parents staying to socialise too, and then finished the term making beautiful floral Christmas table decorations with the help of Claire Robinson, huge thanks to her for sharing her expertise and for helping us forage for greenery.
Spring Term 2024
We made individual fires on our first chilly January night back after the Christmas break. Always a great evening as each Scout has responsibility for their own fire and cooked a delicious burger or halloumi to go in a bun with salad and sauces. We kept warm round our fires with hot chocolate and mulled apple too!
Then we had evenings with some games and challenges, before learning about the international issue of refugees. The Scouts tried to put themselves mentally in the shoes of a refugee family and we looked at the ration packs they are given to survive on.
Then we had an evening making simple flatbreads, the type that a refugee family would be able to make with their rations, followed by delicious pancakes with fruit and cream and syrup toppings, and we reflected on being thankful for the food we have abundantly to eat.
In half term Eva represented us at a District chess competition and did really well.
We started the second half of the term with an evening hike round Houghton, and then the following week we were lucky enough to be invited to The Houghton fishing club to be taught how

to gut and prepare trout. Huge thanks to Dan, his daughter and team from the club for organising it all for us.
We had a really interesting evening at the Freedom Centre in Romsey, where we saw how they support the community through their projects. We had a tour of the foodbank, weighed in our donations, role played how people are welcomed, and packed some bags of food ready to be distributed.
Then we learned about the role of the CAP debt help centre and were given some basic money management tips and sorted through essential and optional/luxury costs that we will have to budget for as we go through life. Then we had the opportunity for some quieter reflective time, to be thankful for things and people in our life and write prayers or hopes if they wished. We are very grateful to Beth, Eve and Deb’s for opening up the centre out of hours and facilitating a very thought provoking and informative evening there.
Then we started work on the mechanics badge, first looking at how an engine works at the hut, with an amazing demonstration of how fuel powers a car! We also learned about what elements of car safety are checked in an MOT, and the costs of running a vehicle.
Huge thanks go to Jonny Perrett for our next session at the Mechanics workshop at Sparsholt college. He gave us a brilliant evening and taught the Scouts how to change tyres, check the air, tread depth, oil and coolant levels and showed us how a gearbox works. An invaluable experience for all. We finished the term with a messy but delicious session, the Scouts were given a variety of different chocolate and fondant icing items and challenged to make an Easter edible craft!
Summer term 2024
At the end of the easter holiday our Scouts were given the opportunity for some rifle shooting taster sessions in preparation for the District shooting competition. Many thanks go to James Clark from the 11[th] Andover group for providing excellent instruction to several of our Scouts that took part. Cody went on to compete at the Andover District event and was fantastic, coming 2[nd] in the under 12’s standing shots.
Our first meeting of the term was our customary walk and game of camouflage in the Bluebells at Bentley woods.
Then we began our Mountain biking sessions, first learning how to do the basic ABC checks on our bikes to see if they were safe to ride and making any adjustments needed to seat height’s, tyre pressures etc. We practiced in the paddock to assess everyone’s abilities before setting off for our first ride on the tracks around our farm.
We had a break from cycling for our annual visit to Jay Miller’s circus the following week, many thanks to Mo for organising this for the whole of the Andover District Scouts, Cubs and Beaver’s, as always, a great evening.
We continued building maintenance skills and confidence with our bikes over the next two sessions, increasing the difficulty of the terrain and tracks we used and learning how to take wheels off, mend punctures, and place chains back on when they come off the gears.
We looked at the environmental impacts of cycling and revisited the countryside code and code of conduct for cycling, and then our final ride was our longest, tackling a section of the Test Way, met by Andrea with sandwiches halfway, and very grateful to Neil for his spare inner tube and quick tyre change!
Huge thanks must go to Neil, Dan Robinson, Jon Perrett, and Alex Kersley for helping us with the mountain biking sessions, your extra hands and expertise were invaluable.
We had an evening of games in the paddock, and a walk in our barley field on a beautiful summers evening. The Scouts always seem to love simply doing this, just walking up a tramline running their hands through the barley heads.

Sam and Frances stood in for us for two weeks as we headed to Scotland to take our daughter and friends to the Hebrides, and the Scouts enjoyed sessions of frisbee golf up at the army camp and some cooking at the hut.
And the last session of the term was doing some beautiful ink art with watercolour inks, the Scouts made thank you cards for their teachers or just wrote inspirational words.
Thank you must go to our wonderful team, Sam Smith, Neil Harrison, and all the parents who have helped us, Dan and Claire Robinson, Bryan and Sarah Glasspool, Sam and Jon Perrett, Alex Kersley, Andrea Zanchi, Mr Cooper, Katelin Lovell, John Cocks, Joe and Zach, our friends (and customers!) who have helped us run specific sessions like the fish gutting and golf, and of course the leaders in the other sections, Mo, Frances, David, Elizabeth and all those behind the scenes who make the Stockbridge group happen and keep the hut up and running.
Many thanks Mark and Gretta Lovell & Sam Smith Mark Lovell Scout Leader 14[th] Andover (Stockbridge) Scout Troop
GSL Group Report 2023 -2024
F Waghorn
Having just heard all the section reports you’re struck by how much the Group has achieved with a core team of Leaders, assistants, helpers and Young leaders; we’ve shown that we can survive the ups & downs of family life & still deliver a really good quality scouting programme for all abilities
So as GSL (now GLV ) I’m not about to compete with that – the credit is the Leaders – and on your behalf I’d like to thank all Leaders, adults including parents, young leaders and those who help on an ad hoc basis for their continued dedication and loyalty to our Group.
Behind the scenes- It’s the now Trustee board who keep us on the straight and narrow, usually a quiet background role but without them we cannot function – they keep us safe and legal and financially afloat. So Victor Mo & Marie – Thank you and to you all leaders and parents who have contributed by helping us with advise.
We now continue in our new roles for the coming year & adjust to the new rules for running the Group.
An even bigger Thankyou must go to Mo & Leigh who after last years recovery of the £12,000 from OSM/ GoCardless have persevered with trying to recover the interest lost.
We also thank our Community Representatives Tony Clayton & Mr & Mrs Taylor for their help maintaining our profile within the local community.
Our Hall Management Committee – for the upkeep of the Hall - as you can see is lovely and well maintained.
So as you’ve heard we’ve lost Mo & Megan – and I’ve also had the heads up from Dave & Elizbeth Dave is relocating to Salisbury – & Elizabeth is working away from home.
If anyone is interested in a role share or supporting the Cub leadership team – please contact me or one of us & well fill you in on the role
I still need a full time Beaver leaders – anyone ?
Our helpers include many of you as parents – within all the sections Beavers Cubs & Scouts. In addition we have those who have moved away – travelling from across the UK – So I’d like to thank
- Scouting team Mark Lovell Sam Smith & Gretta with Dan Robinson, Bryan Glasspool, & Neil Harrison, Jon Cock, and the Gerrads .

Our Cub team Mo -Akela, Megan – Nag, Elizabeth Salter & Dave Wilson, & Neil Harrison sadly we lost David Sawyer due to family commitments.- although hes still on our hit list.
-
And finally our young Leaders Alex, Maddie, Daniel & Hannah.
-
Our Hall team – with Leigh who also remains at the end of the phone as our in touch person
-
Grateful thanks go to the Taylors of Wild Cherries – we ‘ve had another wonderful year digging firepits in their garden, with the safe space to Scavenger hunt, and navigate & track. We appreciate their patience.
Leaders families – thank you for your patience and support – the dinners are always ready when we get home after 9 or 10 at night and the carting of us and kit for camps.
If I’ve missed any one – sorry
As you probably know our local Explorer Unit Yeti closed At April this year 2024, this was sad but if anyone fancies taking on the leadership role please let us know.
So you’ve heard a lot about the Trusttee board and the new structure for Scouting. This is to bring us inline with Charties Commission and their roles.
So as a Group we are a Charity and whereas before you the Group Scout Council held the AGM the Chair is now appointed by you and also the Treasurer & Secratray. We must at all meetings nominate a note taker – who may not vote.
Whereas before Leaders could not have roles on the Exec –Trustee Board they can now and so By having leaders who understand how the Scouts, OSM and the money flows we’re hoping the OSM GoCardless issue will not arise again for others as it has for us and the other unfortunate few.
Looking at the Organogram the roles are now blended and although the roles are specific a leader may have a managerial, plan & deliver meetings within the Group.
All roles now are dbsed and new volunteers are supported with training for the role they wish to help with.
If you wish to help us please do catch one of us and plan
Please please remember that for us to stay safe & legal we are jumping through even bigger hoops – all activities are risk assessed to the ninth degree and with that comes a lot of restrictions. Scouting is a tradition and to teach your child to light a fire say comes with a lot of assessment including adults being present.
If we ask for help – please do come forward – we like you have families and homes – we are volunteers but need you to help us when we call out - if everyone gives up 30 mins -2 hours of time to help us we would have toasted marshmallows, or clear camp / meetings so much quicker and I know from having parents help on Beaver Raft building evenings you have fun too !

14[TH] ANDOVER (STOCKBRIDGE) SCOUTS
TREASURERS REPORT FINANCIAL YEAR 23/24
Treasurer Report 14th Andover (Stockbridge) Scout Group March 23-Aug 24 This is an unusual report as it is for 18 months rather than the usual 12. This is because we have decided to move the reporting of our financial year from a business year -April - March to an academic year Sept to Aug to fit in with the way we run our group. One of the main drivers for this was to get a greater understanding of our spending. Previously we have had difficulties because often events such as circus or camps would take payment in one financial year and actually occur in another. We have had concerns about expenditure vs our income for a couple of years now and our goal for this set of accounts was to get to the bottom of what was the true state of our accounts were we economically sustainable moving forward. Part of our unavoidable expenditure is our capitation to HQ. As you can see from the accounts we have to send a significant proportion of our income to HQ just to be a scout group. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you see it) the accounts have revealed that our subscriptions £6,822.91 are not even meeting our capitation bill £7,106.80, let alone covering thingslike insurance or running the weekly programme. The accounts look falsely rosey due to the £13,246.38 return from GoCardless. If we take that out of the accounts along with a £1000 grant we received from Test Valley Council (as part of the warm space grants) what we actually see is an overspend of £5520.94. Further to the GoCardless situation which we disclosed to you all last year. I did put in a formal complaint to the financial ombudsman. Unfortunately their finding was that we were 50:50 responsible for the situation we found ourselves in and therefore we were not entitled to our interestor any compensation. Camps are generally run at cost and occasionally make a very small profit, but that is not the aim ofthem. We want to run them at as low price as possible to make the accessible to as many people as possible, however we have seen the cost of living situation pushing up the price. As you can see from the accounts that we have been nibbling into our reserves funds to pay for the running of the group (insurances and general costs) and the weekly programme. This is not sustainable. Whilst I will keep looking for and apply for grants, grants are not a sustainable or responsible way to fund our accounts. Therefore this September I proposed to the executive committee, and it was agreed, that we raised the subs from £38 for the first child and £30 for subsequent children per termeffectively £3.80 or £3.00 per session to £50 per term for all children - £5 per meeting. While I don'tdisagree that this is a large jump in price, we are still cheaper than some groups and comparable to others. I am hopeful that this should cover our expenditure going forward and make us economicallyviable. As you can see we are holding just over £9k in an interest baring account as our reserve funds. I would just like to take a moment to thank Mrs Leigh Dance (Badger) for her unending support and fabulous cups of tea, in helping me work through the accounts, keeping me straight and helping me find the missing pennies when the spread sheets don't add up. Questions?
