Annual Reports for 2020
Chairman’s Report :- No Report
Group Scout Leaders (Acting) Annual Report
Firstly, my grateful and sincere thanks to the Leader team, Section Assistants, Occasional Helpers and Group Executive members without whom there would be no Scouting at 2[nd] Stanford-le-Hope.
I have got to say that in all my years in Scouting I have never been through a year as difficult as this year 2020 has been. From January to March we were able to offer our Young People their normal exciting and enjoyable Scouting. Then from March to July Covid-19 really struck home. We were in Lock Down. This did not faze our Section Teams they soon started running Zoom meetings for their Young People. These were well received and well attended. In July lock down eased and Scouting went into their ‘Traffic Light’ system. Red meant no face to face Scouting, Amber meant 15 Young People plus 5 Adults were able to meet in a bubble outside and Green meant back to face to face Scouting. Between July and October our Sections ran a mixture of Zoom meetings and a maximum of 15 Young People outside. November and December we were once again in lock down and we were able to offer Zoom meetings to our Young People. During all this time the Leaders gave their Young People the best Scouting you could give under such challenging conditions. I am sure that you would like me to thank them on your behalf for their hard work.
I would like to take a moment to share with you the Scouting life of our new Vice President John Hawkins. John started Scouting as a Football Coach and then went on to become an Assistant Cub Scout Leader from 1967 to 1972. John then took on the mantle of Cub Scout Leader until his retirement in February 2000. Rather than retire to the quiet life John agreed to become Group Chairman until October 2020. John thought we were going to let him go but it was unanimously agreed that we would ask John to become The Vice President of our Group. John’s Scouting life so far has lasted 54 years and we hope that he continues for many more years.
Due to personal reasons in September both of our Beaver Leaders Karon Venn and Leigh-Anne Turpin resigned. Not only did we lose our Section Leaders but the other Beaver Leaders were unable to attend any meetings due to work related covid-19 restrictions, we were suddenly without any Beaver Leaders. It was then that the true spirit of 2nd Stanford-le-Hope Leaders came to the fore. Joanne Mann agreed to become the Beaver Leader until we found a permanent replacement. With the help of other Leaders Jo gave our Beavers their Scouting via Zoom. I would like to thank Karen and Leigh-Anne for all their hard work for our
Beaver Section. My thanks also goes to Jo for stepping into the Beaver Leader role saving the Beaver Section from closing.
Lee Faux, Neil Doherty, Roger White and Shelly Cootes have kept our Cub Section running all through the year by running their meetings in line with the Scout association Covid-19 restrictions. My thanks to all of them for their hard work.
The Scout Section has run extremely well under the auspices of Jacqui Mann, Georgie Gale and Jo Mann. They have given their Scouts a very enjoyable mixture of Scouting by using Zoom and outside meetings. My thanks to you all for your hard work.
During this year once again we have had the invaluable support of the lay members of our Group Executive in particular John Hawkins Group Chairman, Bernard Helm Group Secretary and Neil Heasman Group Treasurer thank you all for all the hard work you have put in over the last year.
My special thanks goes to Jacqui Mann for all the help and support she has given me this year.
2021 will be a challenging year, we are starting off in lock down and it can only get better.
John Daines Group Scout Leader (Acting)
Scouts Annual report for 2020 (written May 2021)
Following advice from our Group scout leader this report is covering 2020 rather than the last 12 months since the previous AGM.
Since the last AGM our numbers had remained steady initially but we had a drop at the end of the year as our older scouts reached the age to leave us, unfortunately none moved up to explorers but understandable given the inability to meet face to face at the time. We also had some scouts leave as the COVID restrictions impacted on our scouting activities and did not want to return. We had 34 Scouts on our books at the end of 2020.
Weekly activities & other events:
2020 was certainly a different year to any that we have had in scouting in my lifetime and one that hopefully we will never have to encounter again. We rolled into January 2020 without a clue as to how the year would turn. We started with our annual district Shooting competition, celebrated Chinese new year and visited Isaac’s family farm to see the cows during calving season and it was amazing to witness first hand one being born (we hope to be able to return again once COVID restrictions allow if the family allow). In February we had an evening getting to know London before attending the annual DC challenge in London. We managed to have an evening creating some mugs and items for our mothers gifts but then COVID struck before we could hold our annual mothers meal at the hall. Myself and Georgie were able to deliver all the mothers gift bags just before the Country went into lockdown for the first time. We then moved onto Zoom for the majority of the year which Georgie took the lead for. We were really pleased that we managed to keep meeting on a weekly basis throughout the lockdown. Georgie covered several badges, along with guest speakers, cooking and some fun games. Unfortunately all our usual annual events such as Christingle and our Christmas event all had to be cancelled.
Competitions:
We were able to enter several teams into the DC challenge in London where we came 4[th] which gave us enough points to win the District Alf Lowne trophy. Unfortunately the swimming gala was cancelled along with the final for the shooting competition. Obviously the remainder of the year saw all competitions cancelled.
Camps:
We were fortunate to hold our first PL / APL sleep out just before lockdown, which is something that we will hopefully be able to reinstate once camping is back open. Again all our other camps had to be cancelled including county backpack, Docklands, summer back to basics and our much loved EIJ however we were really pleased that the district managed to still run the Jamborama camp albeit in a virtual form and really pleased that so many scouts (& families) still joined in.
Leadership:
Georgie had taken over many of the main scout leader role during 2020 whilst I initially returned to working in the hospital during the first wave then underwent spinal surgery at the end of the year, she has done a sterling job of keeping the zoom sessions running. Jo also took over the temporary role of Beaver scout leader when our previous beaver leadership team decided to step down. Without Jo taking on this additional role, our beaver colonies would have both closed so we are extremely grateful for her hard work in keeping the colony open, linking up with parents to ensure all were able to support on the parent rota, set up monthly payments and run interactive zoom sessions. She also continued to support the scout troop on a weekly basis so we are super proud of her commitment to the Group. Steven has decided to step away from scouting at the moment but John continues to support when able and we have been joined by Mickey who has settled well into supporting the troop when we meet face to face. Kayleigh continued with us as a young leader then joined us as an adult leader when she turned 18 at the end of the year. When face to face scouting restarted in September we had to work around the COVID restrictions and with having over 40 scouts at the time it made it difficult to get everyone back. However we were really lucky to have support from Horndon leaders James and Tasha who have helped face to face and allowed us to use their hall for our smaller groups. We have also had amazing help again from our parents. We wanted to make sure that we could all get back together safely and we feel that with this amazing team of adults we have been able to achieve that.
Going forward:
We are hoping that 2021 will bring some normality and that we can re-start face to face scouting and eventually return to our camping which we all love so much. We’d like to thank all our scouts for their continued hard work and positive outlook to scouting – it certainly makes all the planning and hard work worth the effort. Thank you again to our parents for supporting the scouts to attend and participate as well as ensuring the safety of everyone within the troop.
2[nd] SLH “TOOMAI” Cub pack AGM Report 2021
Since our last AGM, we have continually achieved so much within our TOOMAI pack, So, at the last AGM we reported to have had 32 invested cubs and since then we have had some progress to Scouts patrols but we have also had Beavers swimming up to replace them.
Our pack has been stayed steady in growth despite recent events and of the course usual newbies form Beavers vs leavers to scouts ratios of the pack and have even been able to extend acceptance other cubs moving from other district packs temporarily.
We currently now have four groups of cubs called sixes in which there is a leader followed by a seconder but as a whole work as a team to achieve targets set and compete against the other sixes in the pack. We currently now have 25 cubs in our pack with some more moving up from Beavers.
We still require some parental help in running our programme but need volunteers to join our team for consistency.
Since January this year, until April our continued Zoom online meetings have included a lot of badgework concentrating specifically on our challenge badges which are so essential to attain the cubs chief scout silver badge the penultimate achievement for every cub during their time in Cubs
Since April we had included a lot of outdoor activities for their DIY badge requirements scientist badge a few hikes along the way athletics and cub forums to give our cubs the chance to voice what they would like to do within our programme, to mention a few.
We have had several trips to Condovers campsite to learn basic camping and scouting skills to light fires, cook on them, and learn new wide games to include all. Finishing the May half term with a campfire sing-along with our district commissioner hosting a fantastic night of song and laughter.
We have attended all zoom district events including our renewal of promise and joined in on our annual hike
for our JOTT badge this year to coalhouse fort. So we have done quite a bit so far.
Due to the flexibility and efforts of all of our leaders we have been able to attend future District and Group events giving us the opportunity to compete in all District competitions, and go for district awards which was my,(and still and ongoing) personal goal from 2017.
We have quite a young pack this year. and soon (were assured) they will get an opportunity to go to MEGACAMP the next time it comes up if the near future. If there’s one camp we can strongly advise not to miss it’s this one.
It’s a once in a Cub life time (two if your really lucky) chance to get the full experience of what it means to be a Cub with too many activities to mention here.
We have a great friendly and capable leadership team here at TOOMAI and we continue to give more young people in our community the opportunity (as most of our Cubs will tell you) to experience fun and adventurous activities not normally achievable for young people outside of scouting as well as gaining new friends and learning some handy and some important skills to help them by in everyday life.
The pack and i would like to thank our young leader Ayden during his time with with us so far, and hope he will continue to enjoy his role at 2[nd] Stanford le hope.
Also from the previous year’s young leader programme Charlie has decided to help us out tremendously by requesting to become one of our leaders.
despite this addition, we still need your help in leadership capacity so please volunteer so we can fulfil our roles and obligations to our young people).
The pack and i would also like to extend our thanks to our leaders Bagheera, Sherekhan and Baloo for their tireless excellent support in all things necessary to running the pack.
With an explosion of ideas from our team bringing TOOMAI an even more fun and exciting fresh new programme, designed around our Cubs, including what they, as a pack have asked for (amongst other things more variety of badge-work and games).
We as a group, TOOMAI as a pack, my team and i as AKELA wish all our cubs a very happy and enjoyable experience.
And I count myself proud to be among them as part of the Cub leadership family for TOOMAI.
TOOMAI would like to say a big thank you to our parents for supporting us and helping us achieve great things like joining us on pack nights, encouraging you child to participate in our activities down to ensuring their details are correct on our OSM programme.
I would also thank you as I did last year for giving your young people every chance to learn something new, try something different, share fun things and conversations with other young people and have fun while doing it. They really are a credit to you, and I’m still proud to say a pleasure to know.
I continue to look forward working with all our Leaders within our Group and with the Cubs Help we will have what I predict to be another CUBTASTIC year of Cub scouting where we all take part , have fun and make a difference.

Beaver Scouts Woodcutters & Treeloggers Annual Report.2020
AGM 2020 (January 2020- December 2020 Inclusive)
What a strange year 2020 has been for everyone
We start 2020 off with 2 colonies (woodcutters and Treeloggers) and there was 34 Beavers split between the 2 groups and 5 leaders
Since the last AGM, what a rollercoaster of a year everyone has had and none more so than 2[nd] Stanford Beavers. COVID affected everything going from face to face to online zoom and Facebook calls, to having the complete leadership team change to closing one of the colonies (Treeloggers) due to this.
As a knock-on effect the numbers of beavers have decreased due to closure of the colony and several of the beavers found the online learning difficult at times
Weekly Activities and other events
Weekly activities for the first part of the year where face to face and we visited Metro Bank, did science experiments, Chinese New Year, Shrove Tuesday. We learnt about the importance of being clean. Then unfortunately due to Covid we were forced to close face to face activities.
We moved to online learning either via Facebook live or zoom calls, we found Facebook live was a lot harder to manage as there was no real interaction with the children, so we quickly moved over to Zoom calls and once the leaders came to grips with the way it worked, we ran several different activities for the children to join in from cooking, crafts, and treasure hunts……. As the year moved on there was no let up on the zoom called with the help of Jo beavers were helped in covering many the badges, they needed to earn several badges and please to report a number of the children also did enough work to complete their chief scout bronze award.
Camps / Sleepovers
For 2020 no camps had been planned only the group camp that would have been in the pipeline but with the pandemic restrictions in place we were unable to offer any form of camp/ sleepover
Leadership
So at the start of 2020 we had a group of 5 leaders as you are ware but due to personal reason and other commitments the team made a group decision that they could no longer continue offering the groups the best experiences we could and decided to step down, this left the beavers without any leaders for many months and I do feel that this lead to a number of beavers leaving us. However, in November 2020 our hero in the shape of Joanne Mann (scout Leader) stepped up and took the helm of the groups as they were and I’m sure at many points she pulled her hair out juggling her own personal life and trying to get to grips with the online zoom called with the beavers that she had never meet. But she pulled it off and happy to report did a fantastic job !! working so hard on getting the beavers through badges and pushing them to do their best which led to several of them achieving their chief Scout Bronze Awards
So, this brings us to December 2020, we are down to 16 beavers, 1 colony and 1 leaders The future is looking much brighter for 2021, the restrictions will ease, and we can get back face to face Joanne Mann will look after the groups until a new leadership team can be found and then be on hand to help where she can
Onwards and upwards 2021 will be much brighter for us – I can tell good thing will happen for the beavers watch this space
Treasurers Report
Attached is a copy of the 2020 Accounts. I incorporated the 2019 changes from Dave Ward.
I don't know how long it will take Dave to audit, so we may have to repeat last year and approve a draft for the AGM.
