## **GSL Statement**

A year on from Covid 19 the Ockendon Scout Group has gone from strength to strength. Our YP numbers have reverted to pre-pandemic levels, and we have been able to continually move them through the different sections, resulting in multiple bronze, silver and gold Chief Scout Awards being earnt by worthy recipients.

We also now have one of the few Squirrel sections in the district. A triumph. Commissioned with full numbers and a waiting list that has continued to grow. An additional 16 young people engaging in scouting activities. Our young leaders have also increased this year and they continue to be a valued resource that bring a different viewpoint to the group. In return they receive experience and experiences that will hopefully bring benefits as they transition into adulthood.

Last year we talked about a return to form with respect to what scouts do best. Getting outside and engaging with the world. We promised and we delivered but, most of all it was encouraging to see so many smiling faces (including the leaders). As you will hear in the section reports as a group we have attended and enjoyed the district programme in terms of camping and day activities. District events such as Germany, Kandersteg and Grosvenor Hall are all planned. Ockendon Group will be represented in large numbers as always.

Group events such as Fireworks, Remembrance and Christmas Fayre will go ahead this year. Attended by all sections and offered to other groups in the district as well as our Guiding friends. These events are usually well attended by the local community and offer the group a chance to connect and support in this area.

As always, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ockendon’s Executive Committee and the Scouting leadership teams for their relentless dedication to the Scouting values. Without their continued support Ockendon Group would not find itself in such a fortunate position.

I would like to note a special thank you to both Peter Gore and Colin Ward who have put in so much effort to organise and maintain the Headquarters. Also to our cleaning team who voluntarily continue to keep the facilities spick and span.

Thank you.

James Ellis **GSL Ockendon Group**

## **Scouts**

Getting used to being out of lockdown has been great fun,

Our Scouts attended the District Epic Camp at Skreens Park, winning the sports event by coming 1[st] in the Tug of war, 2[nd] in the volleyball and 2[nd] in the obstacle course. All Scouts had lots of other adventures on this camp - like high wires, water activities, camp fire and outdoors skills as well as bouncy castles and fun games. Following this, what better than to join the Cubs on a Secret Sleepover adventure in Kelvedon Hatch Bunker. We capped the spring term off with an end of term Hawaiian Party including authentic dress, food, drink, and games.

Following summer break and just to get us started back we had an end of summer camp which could not have happened without the Group exec and some parent’s assistance, we again achieved the outdoors Challenge Badge including these skills… knife, axe and saw, Bivi building, wide games and team challenge. Unfortunately fire lighting and outdoor cooking had to be put on hold due to the extremely dry weather we have had. Watch this space. On this Camp, on a personal level, I achieved my nights away permit.

The scouts have also done hikes and sleepovers in the hall, so lots to do and a great plan, all this culminates in our willing Scouts achieving their CSG award. We have even found time to go along to other smaller District lead activities like JOTT.

As previously stated, we did retain all our Scouts from lockdown, who are now beginning to move on, and we have consistently increased our numbers through Cubs swimming up and lots of new joiners through the door. We continue to actively grow Scouting at 1[st] Ockendon with a total of 40 Scouts as of this date with 4 new joiners and 3 new cubs (pre-investiture). We are to lose 5 scouts in the coming months.

I would like to thank my co-leaders for their support and would like to push on from this fantastic year in Scouting.

I would also like to thank the parents and the Exec committee on behalf of all the leaders for their patience, understanding and assistance in helping us to grow our Scouting in this past year.

Lastly, I'd like to thank all the young people for being brilliant and enjoying what they do.

## **Greetings from 1st Ockendon Cubs**

Well once again we have delivered a full year of exciting and meaningful programmes in the Cubs section. Many of the Cubs had to learn again how the face-to-face weekly meetings work as they spent so long in lockdown. Who in their right mind likes Scouting via Zoom!!

We have 39 Cubs on roll and attendance is regularly over 30 Cubs - that’s a lot of noise, fun and careful planning to keep them all entertained!!!

The Cub pack attended every district event and tried our best at each. Well done Cubs. We didn’t win any single events but we had great fun attending them and the Cubs themselves enjoyed themselves - I guess we did win then!!

In the year we invested 25 new Cubs and sent 19 onto Scouts. One of the Cubs leadership team always attend the Scouts link evenings with these older Cubs to give them the best chance of remaining in Scouts and finding their feet.

This year we have had a great programme and worked hard to accommodate all the new badges - local knowledge, chef, challenge badges, disability awareness, DIY, sports, world faiths and pioneering, to name just a few.

Our programme is really varied and is driven by listening to what the Cubs themselves want.

Our bi-annual Dorset trip was amazing. We took 24 very excited Cubs. We did an amazing programme of hikes on cliffs, trip to Brownsea, high ropes, swimming and an awesome party, ticking off 6 badges along the way.

For us at Ockendon Cubs, running the pack is loads of hard work, dedication and commitment but to be part of young childrens development and growth in which we get to role model for them as they try new activities, make friends and find their feet is a real privilege. We certainly don’t do it for the money. :@)

A parent recently told us that Cubs is the only place where her child feels a sense of belonging and of being appreciated. That’s great to hear as we certainly don’t want any Cubs feeling left out. Now try and tell me Scouting isn’t worth it!!

Running the pack takes a huge amount of time and effort (way more behind the scenes than what the Cubs and parents see)and I want to say thank you to my team - we are in this together and we lead together: so my personal thanks to James, Peter, Vicki, Lyndsey, Beth, Doreen and our regular young leaders for the year, James, Sam, Jamie and Myra.

I could not do it on my own and I don’t need to, as the team turn up week in week out and together we deliver what we think is an ace Cub pack. Team, you are AMAZING!! On a personal level, I’ve now clocked up my 13[th] year of being involved with Scouting at Ockendon - where has the time gone?

As we look forward, yet more exciting activities and events are coming -Pantomime (oh yes we do!!), District Germany trip, snakes alive, map work, scouting basics and more - how awesome is that? Seriously good fun all round.

1st Ockendon AGM

And finally a thanks to all our parents who support us in the pack by committing their time and money to their children who learn, enjoy and develop as pleasant and responsible Cub Scouts.

Thanks

## **Beavers Report**

I am Malcolm Taylor the Beaver Leader for 1[st] Ockendon. I have been with Ockendon now for 8 years, and it has been a pleasure to have so many Beavers past and present.

Over the last few years, we have had covid to deal with, but the Beavers worked through this with Zoom meetings and working from home, with letters sent to them.

During this time, I had the pleasure of giving out fifty-five badges to them.

We have now come back face-to-face. We have grown to 28 Beavers, 4 Section Leaders and 4 Young Leaders.

We have had 8 Beavers gain their Bronze Award with more promised by the end of the year. We have had sleepovers, district camps and rainbow Challenge. Our next one is to build a min camp site.

I am looking at doing a Saturday trip for the Beavers, more information to follow.

Sorry I could not be there in person tonight, but please do speak with me at any meeting, and I am happy to answer any questions.

Lastly, I would like to say a big thankyou to my team without them we would not be able to do all the thing we have.

We have been very busy in the small amount of time we have been up and running! We are still the ONLY group in Thurrock!!! We will always be the best!!!

We have 12 children in our section and an ever-growing waiting list.

Since we opened in May we have had lots of fun building our section – the children love coming each week to learn, have fun and just be a SQUIRREL.

Squirrels have already earnt Let it Grow, Fitness and Science badges. They are constantly ticking parts off other badgework.

In our first ever term we covered healthy eating, fitness, bubble fun, Lego masters, archery and a dinosaur end of term adventure!

We all had a lovely relaxing summer where Anita and I planned another action-packed programme for the autumn term. We have science, Diwali, Halloween, firework safety, Nerf gun fun night and our first ever Remembrance Parade. We have so many more things to list.

Our Squirrels team is amazing Anita and I love having the Scooby gang as young leaders. Anthony, Jay and Sophie help support each session the squirrels love them. We make sure that if there is anything to make the scooby gang always have one too. We would also like to thank Malcolm and Jo for being there as extra support.

A massive thank you to the group for helping us to set up this amazing section!!!

Being the only Squirrels section has been amazing we have had to start everything from scratch with help from our allocated cohort.

## **QM report**

After a hard camp season in 2021, 2022 started very well - we received a couple of grants which enabled us to purchase a couple of new tents to replace what hadn't survived the lockdown very well,

My favourite purchase was an Australian made Hot Water System for use on camp, listening to the fantastic feedback from the section leaders after camp was very nice to hear.

It's been a great camp season this year, having three main camps for the sections , with all equipment in use, great to see the kids enjoyment.

Being able to put some of the Scouts through their Quartermaster badge was a privilege, and I will continue to run the badge for other Scouts.
