Report on the Group’s Activities for the year ending 31st March 2025
The Group has had another busy year over 2024-25. We have maintained a significant level of youth membership has been for what we should remember is just one Scout Group. With about 125 adults that support all aspects of the Group, however it must be remembered that only 44 directly work in our 5 Section Teams delivering the programme to young people.
Despite appearances many of our Section Teams need additional members, many of the Team have full time jobs and are not always able to make Section evenings, and without additional support we will start to see an impact on the meetings that your children attend. I appeal to you all reading this, that if you or someone else that you know that is 18 or over could spare a few hours a week and become part of our team, please contact me or one of the Section Leaders.
Each Section has delivered a fun and varied programme throughout the year. In particular out regular sailing sessions and Summer Camp at Marlesford for Scouts, Cubs and Beavers. Plus Essex International Jamboree for the Explorers with thousands of Scouts from across world!

Annual Report 2024/25
This year our Young People have achieved:
-
24 Chief Scouts Awards: 9 Beavers, 6 Cubs, 4 Scouts + 5 Explorers - 13 Duke of Edinburgh Awards with one of our past members, Chloe Ayling, attending Buckingham Palace having achieved her Gold DofE
-
Just under 400 Days afloat
-
In excess of 1000 Nights Away!
We have all enjoyed various events for family and friends, the Events Team has organized many events throughout the year including the continued successful Band Nights.
The Team already has a full programme including the Après Ski Event planned for this year. Please support these events they not only raise money to support the Group’s development but are genuinely great fun too!
This year we saw the return of the Old Leigh Regatta, which was an absolute success and massive thanks to the vision and determination of Marcus Dean and his team that made the return of a Scout led Regatta a reality.
We continue to work hard with our aspirations to complete the building project which is in its last phase to deliver a new building for boat and camp storage. Whilst
we have planning permission in place for some time the conditions imposed have meant in simple terms this project has stalled and to say this is a disappointment is an understatement. We have had to look at a different approach and breaking down how we make the build a reality but as ever this is not coming cheap, and we have had to recently commit in excess £5,000 to update our architectural and structural drawings. Although I cannot confirm a timeframe for completion, we are determined to get the job done!
All that we do at 3rd Chalkwell Bay would not be possible without our leaders, adult members and Young Leaders. In particular I would like to thank the dedication of Chantal Snarey, Tom Kemp and Ed Kemp all of whom took up the challenge of leadership becoming brand new Section Leaders and assisting me in managing the wider Group in the past year.
Moving on to two special people within our Group:
Firstly, Les Davis, who has been our President for almost 14 years! Les joined the Group in 1971 as Akela and has undertaken several roles over the years and only giving u being a frontline leader with Renown in 2019! At 93 years of age Les is stepping down as President but will remain a Vice-
5
3rd Chalkwell Bay Sea Scouts
President. Les you have been a true Sea Scout and supported this Group in a fantastic way over many years!
Secondly, Tricia Smith, who we spoke about at last year’s Presentation Evening. Having stepped down as Akela in 2023 after 35 years of holding significant Scouting roles, she returned to the Defender Cub Section Team supporting Chantal and the Team.
I would like to remind you of some of what was said about Tricia when she stood down as Akela last year:
-
Inspirational
-
Hard working
So, it was of no surprise that when the adults within the Group were asked to select a new President to follow in Les’ big shoes that Tricia came out as the person to take on the role. Congratulations Tricia.
Finally, I cannot finish without recognising the hard work and dedication of all our Leaders, adult members and young leaders.
They all continue to live up to the ethos that saw the Group awarded with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service only a few years ago. Thank you for your commitment in making this Group one of the largest and best in the country!

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of the 3rd Chalkwell Bay Scout Group
I report to the trustees of the 3rd Chalkwell Bay Scout Group (“the Charity”) on my examination of the Charity’s accounts for the year ended 31 March 2025.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the trustees of the Charity, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). I report in respect of my examination of the Charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner’s statement
I have completed my examination and confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
-
accounting records were not kept in respect of the Charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
