C hairman’s Report
The Centre continues to review and add to its programme of activity to meet the needs of the changing age and membership range: following the impact of Covid, social media and home entertainment influencing the offer to youth and community, as do the challenges faced by our team of volunteers.
SVYCC continues to support the work of partner organisations, including the local library and Green Towns (both of which are also run by volunteers) to again secure the prestigious Green Flag award for Shanklin and building on the success of our investment over many years.
We have focussed on community development alongside maintaining youth activities and have successfully relaunched TC’s, our regular Friday evening club for young people, with over 300 members and average attendance of over 140.
Thanks to funders, members and volunteers, many of whom have been with us since 1996, for continuing to play their part in what are becoming increasing difficult times (financially and with volunteering in general, and more recently the Covid 19 closure) as well as the continuing support of the local community, ensuring the Centre remains true to its roots and champions the principals of volunteering, from all ages, backgrounds and genders.

C o-Leaders’ Report
2022 onwards focussed on retaining community groups using the Centre, becoming home to theatre, arts, dance, sport and community organisations with more activities provided, community engagement and making a contribution to the wider community – adding Pilates, expanding our Table Tennis offering and other exercise groups alongside one-off usage, and the relaunch of TC’s (our Friday evening youth club).
Increasingly, our focus will be to work with the local community, including schools, delivering local history projects (several Daisie Rich, HIWCF and CCIF funded projects and films have been delivered). This has also included youth football at Shanklin and securing funding to add to the SVYCC produced films on YouTube – such as a Royal Film and other projects with local schools and historical associations.
Several of our volunteers have built strong links with local organisations, and our younger voluntary helpers are taking on more responsibility, which has been recognised during a visit by the Isle of Wight High Sheriff, as well as local police visits. Our volunteer DJ, Jon Gilbey, was awarded the BEM recognising his community work and Paul Harris has received an Isle of Wight Sports Award in recognition of his contribution to the development of table tennis at the Centre.
