Well, we are back holding our AGM, hopefully the offer of a glass of wine has encouraged many of you join us this year. We are slowly and carefully emerging from lockdown and the Hall is coming back to life. What is the new norm going to look like? Well, it is up to the village to decide. 

We are still taking a very careful approach bring events back into the hall. We have the one of our Dance groups back along with Table Tennis, Pilates, the WI, and the Art Group. The Church Quiz Nights are resuming this month and we hope early next year to have the Film Night back and of course we have the Community Café back and going strong. 

As a result of the generous grants received from Dorset Council the management committee decided to reduce the hall hire fee by approximately 50% to help groups who had lost income during the lock down to make a comeback, the fees will return to the 2019/2020 level at the end of May 2022. 

Thanks to the efforts of Paul & Roger who obtained the grants, this has also enabled us to have the following works carried out during 2021: 

1 To install 8” of insulation above the main hall ceiling which we hope will help reduce the heating costs. 

2 To install a new suspended ceiling with insulation above the stage and the old dressing area & upgrade the lighting including additional emergency lighting. 

3 We now have Wi-Fi in order to obtain this it was necessary for the hall to have its own letterbox which is proudly mounted on the front door. 

4 To have our boiler replaced. (This will be completed during November.) 

The Committee took the view that we needed to conserve as much of our funds as possible, so only works deemed necessary is undertaken, or work for which we have received grant money to pay for a substantial part of the costs. We have now completed 95% of the upgrade works and the outstanding items will be completed by Christmas this year. Most of this work has been carried out on a materials only basis, with volunteers doing the majority of the installation and decorative work. We have allocated funds to complete the following works by the end of this year: 1 Fencing along a short section of the south boundary. 

2 Replacing the committee room carpet with a hard surface floor so that it can kept cleaner. 

3 Replacing the gutter on the northside of the hall. 

4 Painting the store area floor. 

5 Assisted/emergency entrance-exit 

As I have reported in previous years H&S is now an integral part of the running of this hall along with Safeguarding. We are committed to ensuring that everyone using the hall stays a safe as possible. Through regular H&S reviews we keep up with changing requirements. Your Committee is aware that there may be more items to be addressed so please bring to our attention any of your concerns. I am delighted to report that after a successful site meeting with Highways England and the efforts of Keith Baillis producing a series of drawings for us, we have found a way forward to improve the assisted/emergency entrance out on to the A35. You 



may have noticed that we have completed the work inside the hall and Roger has applied for a grant to help with the cost of the external work.

Although most of my report so far has been positive, I now come to the matter of the carpark. 

We had originally made our application for a Village Hall Car Park on land owned by Howard Coates in January 2020. Sadly, the Parish Council objected to our proposal because of A35 traffic concerns. Highways England were broadly in favour on safety grounds. Planning did not start to look at the application until May 2021 because of Covid, and then said they wanted us to fund Air Quality and Traffic Flow Assessments. Even if we had done these, they were still intending to recommend refusal (chiefly on the grounds of increased pollution due to the proximity of the car park to the main road) so we felt we had no option but to withdraw the application. Very disappointing. 

To return to positive matters; once again, many thanks to Gloria and her team of Jane, Julia, Frances, and Sue who have so successfully run the Community Café which started back in the early part of this year. All the team make sure that everyone is welcome and there is always an astounding supply of delightful cakes. As you all probably know, this is **not, I repeat not,** a fund-raising event for the hall. Although generous donations are made at each event, which go to a number of deserving local charities selected by Gloria and the team. The idea behind the Community Café is for villagers and friends to be able to come together at the hall to meet and chat over a cup or two of tea or coffee (with as much cake as you can reasonably eat) in the spirit of good neighbourliness. 

## **There are many thanks I want to make:** 

1 To the late Jeanette Smith, who died earlier in the year and who had looked after our garden for many years. Lee & Paul Ramsden have now taken this maintenance task on, ably helped from time-to-time by David Jones. The garden has been given a make-over and is once again looking very colourful. 

2 To Sue Walliker, who after many, many years of long service has decided to stand down and allow young Paul Ramsden to manage the bookings diary for the hall. We wish Sue all the very best in her new career. 

3 To, once again, thank Chris Walliker for auditing our accounts. 

4 To Roger Carey who has continued to manage our accounts so admirably and has obtained grants for us that have enabled us to continue with improvements to the hall. 

5 Collectively also to David Jones, Paul Ramsden & Roger Carey without whose help endless maintenance works around the Hall would not get done. 

6 A special thank you to Paul Ramsden for all his work as hall secretary. Without him it would not have be possible to keep up to date with the changing Covid rules and for his impeccable maintenance of the hall’s records and correspondence. 

7 To local firms Travis Perkins and Topsparks, which have been an immense help towards maintaining the Hall during the works we have undertaken. 



8 A big thank you also to Nick Mudford who has always been a great supporter of the hall and who has been willing to advise and help us with our building and repair projects. 

9 To Keith Baillis for producing drawings for the carpark, the assisted entrance, and the general building. 

10 Finally, a big thanks to all the committee members who continue to support the work of the village hall. 

Your committee needs as many active members as we can persuade to join us. More hands make light work, so if anyone would like to be involved in a worthwhile village project (so many activities in the village could not take place without the village hall), please consider joining us.
