Comrades Hall Management Commi1ee,
Chairmans Annual Report 2025
The Commi1ee has met five >mes this year with an average a1endance of 10 members. Three new members were coopted in May, Rick Dyke as Parish Council Rep, Simon Burke kindly assis>ng with sound equipment and Sheila Hawkins represen>ng the Community Land Trust.
I would like to start by saying that it has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with such a suppor>ve group over the last year, I think we have achieved a lot to be proud of in what is a key facility at the heart of our community.
Outside and Inside Cleaning days have been well supported giving a vital boost to keeping Bernards’ Place spick and span and taking care of maintenance tasks in and around the Comrades Hall.
Our financial situa>on is improving by way of increased hire bookings and from April a much-reduced electricity tariff. We have also been fortunate enough to receive grants/dona>ons from the Parish Council, Broadwindsor CLT and Magna Housing. However, to help cover our running and maintenance costs various fund-raising ac>vi>es have taken place. I am very grateful to all the commi1ee members who have given so much of their >me to organise these ac>vi>es: a Barn Dance, running a bar for an event, The Big Breakfast, The Café for the Garage Sale, The 100 Club, Film Club and Arts Reach.
There has also been success in the final step towards the Hall making full use of the solar panels, by way of obtaining a full grant towards the purchase of a ba1ery to store the energy produced and LED ligh>ng throughout. We have Sara Dyke to thank for her dedica>on to achieving this through several applica>ons before success with the Lo1ery Community Fund.
I am also pleased to report that the following projects have been completed; new curtains have been purchased giving a lighter fresher look to the venue. The new ba1ery has been installed along with new LED ligh>ng and the resurfacing of the turning area along with relining of the car park has taken place. In addi>on, our ac>ve maintenance team led by Chris Edgerley have
improved the drainage on Bernards’ Place and extended the electricity supply to the shelter area, for future events.
There will be several changes to the commi1ee going forward and it will be sad to see some people go and they will be greatly missed, but I would par>cularly like to thank Chris Ponton who is standing down but has kindly agreed to con>nue with the grass cu\ng.
I would also like to recognise the extra support and help given to me by Jill Maguire, as Secretary, the >me and energy she has given to “ge\ng things done” has been excep>onal. Karen Farley took on the Treasurer’s role two years ago and has been so suppor>ve and successful in keeping us on the right path financially.
Also, there cannot be any report without due men>on of the two most important members of Comrades Hall, Mandy our cleaner who has been so reliable and efficient for many years and Kirsty Moore our excellent Booking Clerk and Coordinator, thank you for all you do to ensure the smooth running of the daily ac>vi>es.
Finally, a thank you to our hirers, and all our village members who book the Hall and those who support and a1end all the events, it truly would not be possible to maintain this facility without your ongoing help.
