## **Chair’s Report – 10th Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts** 

2024-25 has been another incredible year for 10th Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts. This is my fifth year as Chairperson for the Charity which oversees the management of scouting activities. 

The last 12 months have seen significant improvements made to our scout hut to improve its environmental sustainability, appearance and meet all necessary requirements for a safe public building. This has helped us to attract additional funding into the charity by being able to offer for hire, the building to partner organisations in the public sector to be used as a vaccination centre and for local elections. Our scout hut has truly become a well-established community asset. 

The scouting purpose is to actively engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society. The young people play a huge role in supporting each other to build and develop their confidence and character as fun loving, adventurous responsible young people who are a credit to our local community. 10th Torbay is incredibly fortunate to have such an experienced, kind, supportive and skilful group of volunteers who guide our young people through their scouting journey. 

Our volunteer leaders spend countless hours planning and preparing for all activities throughout the year. In addition, they also ensure their own training is up to date, often taking on roles and responsibilities beyond our local groups to ensure the wide range of activities can continue to be delivered. Just one of the many achievements of the year, for the first time we have 4 leaders who have attained their kayaking permits to allow a record 32 young people to be on the water at the same time. I’d like to thank all of our volunteer leaders for all their hard work and commitment, often undertaken on top of their own work, full time studies and family commitments. Your contributions are what drives the success of 10th Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts. 

There are many achievements to celebrate over the last 12 months. A snapshot includes: 

- Weekly face to face delivery for all Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer groups. 

- Sea kayaking, caving, climbing and sailing 

- Attendance at Hurdlestone and Scoutmoor 

● No Scouting year would be complete without a full range of camps to participate in. These have included Frosty Camp for Cubs and Roadford Lake to help Scouts gain valuable sailing accreditation and Scout Ex to name but a few. 

As always, my gratitude goes to the 10th Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts Trustees for effectively managing the charity. 2024/25 has seen new trustees join the board, all working to ensure the sustainability of the charity of overseeing the safeguarding of all young people engaged with 10th Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts. 

The contribution Capt’n, Bosun and all our leaders make should be recognised for creating a welcoming, inclusive Scout group and for continuing to plan and arrange inspirational activities. To all parents, carers and family members for bringing your young person to their sessions every week and for offering your support.

## **Group Lead Volunteer Report** 

Six years into my role as Group Lead Volunteer and I am proud to still be steering the 10[th] Torbay ship in its ever-changing journey.  We have had another 12 months of amazing activities provided by the fantastic leadership team working tirelessly behind the scenes coming up with new and fresh ideas of how we can provide an interesting programme for all the sections. 

Whilst we have completed most of the building projects, we still have a few more to go however with limited funds in our accounts we are waiting on grant applications before we can proceed - we still have plans to put in a ceiling in the “glitter room”, new door way there and replacement doors for the alleyway and boat house. In a couple of weeks our compound out of the front is being paved thanks to Wiltshire’s next door who are providing the materials and labour for this to happen. 

Our squirrel section celebrated its 1[st] birthday back in May and has a new night of operating from this month under the watchful eyes of Pascal, Bim and Seb. The trustee board have been working hard behind the scenes ensuring our building is compliant and creating an asset register for all of our equipment – this is a massive undertaking and a 3rd session has just been organised.  We also made a very important appointment of one of our young leaders turned 18 last week and signed up straight away to become a leader – Lily “Pascal” brings such a balance to our team and has straight away thrown herself in the deep end with squirrels.  I must say that all our explorers and young leaders are our future. 

Please do not think our teams are complete, the more who help makes volunteering easier for everyone and brings new skills to the fold.  We are a friendly bunch so why not give it a go? 

As a group we are so lucky to have such a great enthusiastic bunch of volunteers who are the nicest leaders you could ask to meet, they have met all the challenges of getting activities up and running again with enthusiasm & ideas.  They all support each other, filling in on section nights if needed and programme ideas adapted for whichever section. The winners experiencing great programmes & activities are your children, this fabulous team of adults who not only support their section but everyone else’s too are worth more than their weight in gold and I thank them for continuing to be part of the 10[th] .  We have also supported district and county events in the last year and have more planned on the horizon – if your inner scout wants to help teach fire lighting, making “smores”, helping with sport/craft activities or come along and cook on a camp (this is how I started) please do ask. 

Six years in and our brilliant trustee board continue to support our group with the “official” paperwork and guidance from behind the scenes.  We still have plans for finishing the refurbishing our building and improving the activities we can offer your children.  Alice our new treasurer has done an amazing job of learning our accounts, keeping us on track and most importantly is still smiling.  This year we wave goodbye to Justin who has been an amazing chairman, Craig and Jamie.  We are grateful to all of them and wish them all the best on their new adventures. 

This year I had a stint of being unwell so took the best decision to appointment an assistant group lead volunteer – I would like you all to welcome and support Sam to her new role, she is an amazing asset to our group and in supporting me too. 

So, thank you parents for still being with us, a warm welcome to new parents who have joined us in the last 12 months and lastly to all our young people in all our sections a massive thank you for still wishing to be part of our adventure, for giving every activity a go and pushing your own limits. 

I am looking forward to another 12 months, please continue to support our group with all our endeavours and each section when they ask for additional help – why not go the next step (like we all did) and become a regular volunteer – you will bring something to our group as we will teach you something back in turn – what is there to lose – flexible volunteering at its best.

## **10th Torbay Squirrels Section Report 2025** 


A massive thank you to all our parents for lending us your children every week, to Nicki Spalding “Capt’n” for administering all necessary paperwork in the background, Sam Cooper aka Rikki Tikki our In Touch, to our wonderful Beaver leaders Kelly aka Tic-Tac and Angela aka Keogh, who catch our Squirrels as they Move Up and our wonderful Young Leaders Bruce and Lily; without you guys, nothing would happen! 

We celebrated out First Birthday in May 2025! We had several hut sessions in the programme during the year but want to give our Squirrels that “Outdoor Experience” that 10th Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scout Group are famed for! With our newest recruit Sarah aka Nik-Nak we’ve done paddleboarding with Reach Outdoors, we’ve Slipped and Slid, made Bruce into a cardboard robot, visited Torquay Fire station, launched rockets, did Halloween crafting, attended out first Remembrance Parade, visited Pets At Home in Paignton, threw eggs from great heights (and they survived – unlike some of our caterpillars!), walked along Torquay Seafront looking at the Christmas lights, did our first stage First Aid badge, looked at growing things, made a bug hotel, hiked to the chip shop and made dens, toasted marshmallows, cooked stews, made crafts and crabbed on Torquay Harbour. 

We looked into the sky, learnt our planets, got very wet building sandcastles and our special badge work was on our Community Impact and looked at food waste, culminating in making delicious smoothies with Totnes, Food in the Community Group. But most importantly we had fun!  We now all know our compass points, how to be “Beans on Toast”, found our first geocache, can put up a tent and said goodbye to one of our founder leaders Amy aka Chip. 

Badges are on every sleeve of our Squirrels as they work hard towards the ultimate Acorn Award. It is a delight to see so many familiar faces when we visit Beavers every so often. Two gained their 1 year Joining In award! As ever, friendships have flourished, personalities developed over the time we see Squirrels in our drey. Goodness how they grow up and blossom and we look forward to the next year with our wonderful young people!

## **Beavers Section Report 2025** 


Beavers have had a busy year with a varied programme from our “Beaver Got Talent” show to learning Morse code. We now have members moving up through Squirrels Section and we work together to make this transition as easy as possible. We couldn’t run without the support of parents so thank you for this and lending us your children; it’s a privilege to see them enjoy the activities and grow as young people. A big thank you to our Team, particularly Ode and Lily. 

As many of you know Tic Tac has been very poorly but is on the mend and will be back as soon as she is able. But she is still keeping tabs on us and you!

## **Cubs 2025 section report** 


The Cubs have excelled again this year. With quite a challenging programme and the addition of kayaking, necessitating a change of day for two consecutive weeks, we have had good attendance and an abundance of enthusiasm and engagement throughout. 

With 2023/24 proving to have been a successful programme for the Cubs, the leaders were going to be hard pushed this year to be just as challenging and enjoyable for all involved, especially our parent volunteers, without whom we could not have run some of the events. We also thank our young leaders, Aspen, George, and Oscar, who also help to keep the Cubs busy while leaders are preparing for activities. We would also like to thank the Cubs for attending and giving everything a good try with enthusiasm and boundless energy. Looking back at the activities the Cubs participated in, it's amazing to think we were able cram it all in! Our winter/spring programme was mainly in the HQ, but we also had a session of coasteering at Ansteys Cove, a guest speaker talking about how Parliament works, archery, rock climbing, first aid, a board games night, 2 x hikes, and a Bonfire Night at Watcombe burning the Guys they made the week before. 

The Christmas break allowed Jakala time to arrange some fantastic meetings to help the Cubs gain their Devon Police badge. This included a visit to Torquay Police Station, seeing the inside of a police van, and for those who felt brave, being locked in a police cell. The Cubs absolutely loved it, and those parents that helped found it interesting too. We managed to make pizzas at Watcombe, learnt about Digital Citizenship and online safety, and a hike around Cockington. 

Weather-wise, the summer was good for us. We decided that we needed to have some great outdoor activities of which only one was a hike! Starting with wide games at Ilsham Green, we then had crafts and games at the HQ, and then a VE day celebration decorated with genuine flags from the time, brought in by Bandarlog. We even had ration books to give a feel as to what it would have been like to have to make hard choices about food. Some of the food the cubs brought to the meeting was amazing and well thought through. We had a rotation of rock climbing, archery, and grass sledging, at different locations which made some of the logistics tough, but thanks to some brilliant parent helpers the cubs had a great time. 

The last 4 meetings of summer were all water based, with crabbing at the harbour, two weeks of kayaking, and the annual sandcastle competition followed by a water game called “Splash the leaders as much as you can while in the sea!”. The last meeting of the summer was held at Watcombe, where we gave out lots of well-earned badges. This was followed by the cubs enjoying the slip ‘n’ slide water run and a barbecue. 

This section is continuing to run at high numbers with a list of children waiting to join (the word has got out what a great programme we run) and needs more leaders. Early in the year Bagheera moved up to help the Explorer section. Dropping us from 4 to 3 section leaders meant that we had to cancel a meeting for the first time in a long while purely because of leaders to Cubs ratio.   As a parent group you are all amazing in offering support and we could not run our programme without you, but we would like another couple of adults to help with the programme planning, risk assessments and admin that happens behind the scenes as well as the fun day to day stuff, cooking on camp or just helping when you can – it is all possible. The more volunteers we have, the easier it is to run a rota, meaning that fewer sessions per volunteer can be achieved. If you fancy joining in let us know!

## **Sea Scouts Report 2025** 


The winter saw us off the beach and cleaning our water kit for storage.  We have spent evenings at the campsite refreshing our knife, axe and saw skills, checking “Steve” was still in the knife box, campsite help and fire lighting skills.  We have ribbon, beach and chip hiked, and played wide and board games.  We have climbed on our climbing wall, shot some archery arrows and air rifle pellets, learnt some life skills, and learnt how we build stuff.  It was then time for water kit prep and our first night back on the beach. 

This year again the section was the correct size so everyone has had access to a water activity.  They have enjoyed sailing, kayaking and “pirates”.  I would like to thank all the scouts for their enthusiasm each week for their activities and turning up in rain or sun, we have had a lot of wind & rain or no wind – you cannot win! 

It has been so lovely getting all our sailing equipment out on the water again and for Calypso to be a regular part of this, Bosun and I have not been around as much as we would have liked in July and we are both grateful to the leaders in our amazing group for making sure the sessions still ran each week as planned. 

Biffo organised some more caving sessions which everyone enjoyed with more planned for the winter months. 

Winter program as usual is in its planning stage with the idea of spending as little time we can get away with indoors, we have such lovely outdoor facilities available to us we need to make use – now would be a good time to check winter waterproofs and boots fit plus locating that missing head torch. 

We managed a frosty camp in January with an expedition running alongside and a Sailing camp in April.  We also put forward two teams for Hurdlestone challenge in June and they came a credible 31[st] and 35[th] with team Fireball winning the archery competition.  We have an expedition camp in the planning for October and our usual frosty camp in the New Year.  Scoutmoor 26 will be running in August which we will be attending again with all sections. 

We would like to thank parents for continuing to support our section in all our adventures, it is much appreciated.  None of this happens however with the scout team who diligently turn up week on week, and other section leaders who help out on an extra night, the beauty of flexible volunteering means you help when you can.  We also supported our cubs and explorers with water opportunities this year and will plan in the same for 2026 with coasteering being a new activity on the horizon. 

I personally would like to thank Bosun, Riley, Zippy, Dodger, Biffo, Landy, Baghera, and Pearl who without their continued support, risk assessments, giggles, laughter and ideas we would not have as much fun as we do.

## **Explorers Section Report 2025** 


It has been an eventful and action packed year at explorers with a wide range of activities - air rifle shooting, climbing, kayaking, loads of hikes as we started a mission to hike the southwest coast path, a few camps including our “survival skills” camp where we built shelters, skinned and cooked rabbits. We also joined other explorers for a district camp. 

Some good progress was made towards young leaders’ belts with almost half the unit currently volunteering and helping with younger sections and we started work on ICV activities towards the Diamond award. 

Some special mentions this year go out to: Bruce – always has a great attitude and joins in plus keeps the playlist pumping on the Hikes Megan – shows great leadership skills and is a perfect example to others Nina – always gets stuck in, did a fantastic job skinning the rabbit and helping out at every meeting. 

Our focus for the coming year is to continue the work we have built on so far with the young leaders’ belt and Diamond awards. We will also start training towards the explorer belt trip planned for 2027. As part of this we hope to take part in the monopoly run in London in April, arrange more camps, continue working on the south west coast path and generally get the explorers to start taking charge and organising more activities for themselves and other sections.

I report on the accounts for 10th Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts Group for the period ended 31[st ] March 2025 

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner** 

The trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year and that an independent examination is needed. 

It is my responsibility to: . To state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

## **Basis of independent examiner's report** 

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by 10th Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts Group. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the group and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below;

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention 

(l) Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: 

-  To keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the 1993 Act; and 

-  To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 1993 Act
