Chairs Report – 10[th] Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts
I’m proud to say this is my third year and report as Chairperson for the 10[th] Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts Trustee Board. Each year seems to pass quicker than the previous. Upon reflection that’s due to:
-
the incredible activities our inspiring leaders plan and our young people participate and engage in.
-
the work undertaken by the Board of Trustees to ensure the charity is well run, safe and made sustainable to ensure scouting at 10[th] Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts can continue for future generations of young people.
The purpose of the Scouting movement is to actively engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society. 10[th] Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts provides a rich programme which challenges members to explore who they are as individuals, how they relate to others and their community and provides experiences which many young people would not ordinarily have the opportunity to participate in. By engaging with Scouts our young people are encouraged to:
-
Act with integrity
-
Promote care for people and the world we live in.
-
Explore faiths, beliefs and attitudes of different cultures and communities.
-
Show respect for others as well as for ourselves.
-
Make a positive contribution to our community and the world through collaboration and cooperation.
These points are the core values of which we are guided by as Scouts. They remain with us as we progress through adulthood and ensure we make a positive difference in the world.
There are many achievements to celebrate over the last 12 months. A snap shot includes:
-
Weekly face to face delivery for all Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer groups.
-
After spending much of 2022 working to raise funds, a number of our Scouts attended the World Scout Jamboree, August 2023.
-
No Scouting year would be complete without a full range of camps to participate in. These have included Frosty Camp for Cubs and Roadford Lake to help Scouts gain valuable sailing accreditation and Scoutmoor to name but a few.
-
The Trustees have continued to make changes to Scout Head Quarters. Significant improvements have been made to the building to maintain the property, increasing energy efficiency with new boiler, bathroom facilities, windows and fire doors. A new ramp has been installed to make the building accessible for people with mobility needs.
-
Opening of our squirrel drey in May 2024 under the excellent leadership of Amy & Rebecca.
Each year this report gives me the opportunity to reflect on the previous 12 months activity. Whenever I have the opportunity to visit an activity or work with the Trustees, I’m reminded that all the achievements made by our squirrels, beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers are only made possible by the contributions being made by leaders, parents, carers and wider family members who volunteer their time to help plan, run and support the delivery of activities.
As always my gratitude goes to the 10[th] Torbay (Babbacombe) Sea Scouts Trustees for helping to effectively manage the charity. The contribution Capt’n, Bosun and all of our leaders make should be recognised for creating a welcoming, inclusive Scouts group and for continuing to plan and arrange inspirational activities. To all parents, carers and family members for getting your young person to their sessions every week and for offering your support. Lastly, a huge thank you to all our young people for turning up to every session, for your enthusiasm, for challenging yourselves to try new things and supporting your fellow Scouts.

Group Lead Volunteer Report
Five years into my role as Group Lead Volunteer and I am proud to still be steering the 10[th] Torbay ship in its ever-changing journey. We have had another 12 months of amazing activities provided by the fantastic leadership team working tirelessly behind the scenes coming up with new and fresh ideas of how we can provide an interesting programme for all the sections.
We have completed most of the building projects with new windows and doors, boiler, bathroom upgrade, the ceilings in the kitchen, hallway, toilets and committee room have all been plastered and painted, and the main hall has been battened making a much nicer environment. We still have plans to put in a ceiling in the “glitter room”, new door way there and in October half term the main hall and hallway is being painted giving a fresh look to our facilities. Our rib needed a major service mid term which is now operational again, we were fortunate to find a home for our 6 Pico’s who are now teaching children to sail in Poland and have purchased another event shelter as our group is growing in size to allow us to accommodate more on camp.
I continue to split myself into many layers supporting all the sections in our group from behind the scenes and our leadership team is growing in strength. This year we have welcomed a new Squirrel section and what a delight to open with such a lovely group of new additions and three new scout leaders to support the team – Amy “Chip”, Rebecca “Bim” and Seb. Sandie joined us too as an allsection helper. Rebecca continues to be a part of our trustee board taking a lead on ensuring our building is compliant. We welcomed Issac “Chippy” to the leader team, he used to be one of our land scouts and its great he wanted to come back to support. We welcomed Ella “Pearl” who came along for some programme Ideas (she is GVL at 14[th] Torbay) and was having such a great time added a second role to still work with us – collaborative scouting at its best. We have waved goodbye to Simon from our explorer team and are looking for some more support for this section – they are working with such a great group of explorers most of whom have made their way through all the sections either in this group or from 3[rd] Torbay. Sue has moved over from the scout team to Beavers to support their endeavours, she missed working with the younger elements of our group since having a major career change in the last year. We also made a very important appointment of one of our young leaders turned 18 and signed up straight away to become a leader – Freya “Ketchup” brings such a balance to our team and all our explorers and young leaders are our future – now who turn’s 18 next and where did I put the adult joining form ….
Please do not think our teams are complete, the more who help makes volunteering easier for everyone and brings new skills to the fold. We are a friendly bunch so why not give it a go?
The new helpers have joined a great enthusiastic bunch of volunteers who are just the nicest leaders you could ask to meet who have met all the challenges of getting activities up and running again with enthusiasm & ideas. They all support each other, filling in on section nights if needed and programme ideas adapted for whichever section. The winners experiencing great programmes & activities are your children, this fabulous team of adults who not only support their section but everyone else’s too are worth more than their weight in gold and I thank them for continuing to be part of the 10[th] . We have also supported district and county events in the last year and have more planned on the horizon – if your inner scout wants to help teach fire lighting, making “smores”, helping with sport/craft activities or come along and cook on a camp (this is how I started) please do ask.
Five years in and our brilliant trustee board continue to support our group with the “official” paperwork and guidance from behind the scenes. We still have plans for finishing the refurbishing our building and improving the activities we can offer your children. This year we wave goodbye to Mark who has been a stalwart of our finances, we are grateful to him and wish him all the best on his new adventures. Thanks Mark.
So, thank you parents for still being with us, a warm welcome to new parents who have joined us in the last 12 months and lastly to all our children in all our sections a massive thank you for still wishing to be part of our adventure, for giving every activity a go and pushing your own limits.
I am looking forward to another 12 months, please continue to support our group with all our endeavours and each section when they ask for additional help – why not go the next step (like we all did) and become a regular volunteer – you will bring something to our group as we will teach you something back in turn – what is there to lose – flexible volunteering at its best.
Nicki “Capt’n”
10th Torbay Squirrels Section Report 2024
As the newest section to 10th Torbay and the first Drey to be established in the Torbay District we would firstly like to thank all the parents for lending us your children every week; for the support of Nicki Spalding “Capt’n” for administering all the emails, setting up payments and doing the necessary paperwork in the background as well as visiting our sessions; we certainly started off the section with a bang!
The Drey opened on 13 May 2024 with 12 Squirrels. We had several hut sessions on the programme but wanted to ensure a full and active programme was available, in line with the rest of the sections at 10[th] .
Awards, badges and several Squirrels turning 6 this term put on a spurt to encourage the Squirrels to achieve their Chief Scout Acorn Awards. This involved 4 Challenge Badges and two activity badges. Some of these involved home activities, well done to those who have been busy doing these.
As the ratios for outdoor activities are 1:4 we have had unbelievable support from all our parents. Beans on toast is a game involving lying on the floor very still, mimicking beans on toast, this was brilliantly performed by many parents on several occasions and there are times we wonder who Squirrels is actually for!
Hikes onto Walls Hill looking at the World Around us, learning the compass points, rock pooling on Meadfoot Beach, litter picks, outdoor yoga poses, an obstacle course and time at the campsite grass sledging, doing a treasure hunt and toasting marshmallows are just some of the fun outdoor activities we have done.
On rainy days we learnt where in the world our fruit comes from, made fruit salads (yes even at age 4 Squirrels were encouraged to use knives), we made slime and salt dough for Squirrel ornaments. Friendships have flourished and personalities developed over the short time we have been formed and Our Drey is a wonderful group of enthusiastic, vibrate, exquisite young people who have blossomed. They should all be proud of their achievements and the badges that have earned.
Amy “Chip”, Rebecca “Bim” and Young Leaders Bruce and Lily
Beavers Section Report 2024
The Beaver section continues to run at full capacity allowing for our new Squirrel section that has now been up and running for 5 months now and is proving to be a success, well done to our “Capt’n” Nicki Spalding, Chip and Bim for making this happen and for doing a fantastic job offering young people new skills for life.
We have welcomed Odie to our team, an experienced leader who fancied a change/new challenge, she was with the older children volunteering in the sea scout’s section. Odie is settling in well and I hope to keep her as her help is very much appreciated. To find leaders is like finding gold!
Justin Beaver has been introduced as a weekly award along with his adventures log book done by the beavers. He seems to be hit!
The beavers have had a great time and achieved many badges along the way, including some who have gained their Chief Scouts Bronze Award, the highest award that can be achieved in the Beaver section, this is a recognised well-earned and great achievement to have.
Chief Scouts Bronze Awards:
A massive congratulations goes to: Adam Bowley, Bodhi Munns, Harrison Clark, Eli Sampson and Amber Qiriaqi.
Our beavers have had lots of fun and a varied programme, along the way it’s been so rewarding to see the self - confidence grow in every single child as the year progressed. Beavers have taken part in remembrance parade, community impact- supporting path ice poles, supporting homeless, carers home (drew pics to brighten up their day), volunteering at the memory cafe.
We have learnt new skills such as food produce from fairtrade, value of money, Tie knots, reading compass points, bouldering, beavers got talent, archery, grass sledging, geocaching, visited the theatre and watched Shrek the Musical and many more activities and skills that we offer.
We have had 2 camping opportunities this year, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and made lots of memories, our first camp was held at Watcombe campsite and was space themed and our last camp was Scoutmoor 2024 held in Exeter and the beavers that attended, all managed to do 3 days achieving lots of badges including the all-important 2 nights away.
None of this is achievable without the continued support of all our parents/guardians, leaders and young leaders, we are extremely grateful for their assistance with all our activities.
Yours in Scouting,
Kelly Caunter “Tic Tac”, Angela “Keo” and Sue “Odie” (Section Leaders)
Cubs 2024 section report
Another great year for the cub’s section with a wide and varied program helping most cubs to achieve their chief scouts silver award before moving up to sea scouts. Many of our activities being made possible with the help of parent volunteers assisting throughout the year on hikes, camps, and events.
As well as the fantastic parent support we are very grateful to our young leaders Aspen and Isabella who have helped work alongside the leadership team to run several activities throughout the year. Not to mention the sea scout and explorer leaders all coming together at the end of the summer term to help give the cubs an introduction to some of the water activities they can look forward to in their future scouting adventures.
The winter term 2023 started on a fantastic note at the remembrance parade, with the cubs (and all the sections) being praised by many in attendance as a great example of scouting and its values.
As the nights drew in and we spent more time indoors we were lucky to take advantage of all the great facilities available to us with use of the shooting and archery range, bouldering with Banderlog and the fantastic range of craft equipment in Bosun’s “glitter room”. When not indoors we’ve also managed some great hikes, some with full moons and star gazing, some with chips, and some nights at the camp site with grass sledges, bonfires and smores.
As lucky as we are to have lots to do inside, we are even luckier to have such a great range of activities on our door step when the weather becomes “slightly” more predictable. Our annual sandcastle competition was as great as always and was enjoyed by the cubs, and possibly even a bit more by some of the Dads. We had some great hikes and completed a new section of the John Musgrove trail. We were also able to put our winter bouldering sessions to use at “scout slab” and take the cubs for a more serious climb. We had a great end to the year with our water sessions and kayak games and of course a fantastic summer camp at Scoutmoor where we got the opportunity to mix with lots of other cubs from Torbay, Bristol, Plymouth and more.
The section continues to run at maximum capacity with more people joining the wait list each year. We obviously couldn’t do this without all of our adult volunteers giving up not only the time for meetings, but the extra planning and training for activities like climbing, archery, water activities and more. Not to mention those behind the scenes that make it all possible. Our fantastic support team helping us get grants for equipment, managing our finances, and of course our wonderful lead volunteer “Capt’n Nicki Spalding” who really is the glue that keeps us together. The support, guidance, training and organisation Nicki provides ensures we are continuously able to provide the events and activities that make all of our time in scouting so memorable.
Lee “Bagheera”, Debbie “Jakala”, Chris “Banderlog” and David “Hathi” Cub Section Leaders
Sea Scouts Report 2024
The winter saw us off the beach and cleaning our water kit for storage. We’ve spent evenings at the campsite refreshing our knife, axe and saw skills, checking “Steve” was still in the knife box, campsite help and fire lighting skills. We have ribbon hiked, geocached, completed our “what 3 words” Hike, and played wide games. We had a PL/APL take over night and had our Christmas party before we broke up for the holidays.
Once back in January we bouldered on the climbing wall, shot some archery arrows, made paper airplanes to fly the length of the hall, played some more wide games, made and painted our Pinewood Derby cars before having a couple of race nights. It was then time for water kit prep and our first night back on the beach.
This year the section was the correct size not to have to split into three teams and so everyone has had access to a water activity. They have enjoyed sailing, kayaking and “pirates” plus earlier in the term all had a chance for a ride in Calypso, our safety rib. I would like to thank all the scouts for their enthusiasm each week for their activities and turning up in rain or sun, we’ve had a lot of wind & rain!
It again has been so lovely getting all of our sailing equipment out on the water again and for Calypso to be a regular part of this, here’s hoping September is kind to us with no major easterly swells.
This summer Biffo organised more caving sessions which everyone has enjoyed. Bosun and I are hoping to put on some more shooting Saturdays over the winter, we have been a little busy with jamboree planning and the campsite.
Winter program as usual is in its planning stage with the idea of spending as little time we can get away with indoors, we have such lovely outdoor facilities available to us we need to make use – now would be a good time to check winter waterproofs and boots fit plus locating that missing head torch.
We managed a PL/APL camp in September, frosty camp in January with an expedition and a Summer camp in August – Scoutmoor was an amazing opportunity and will be back in 2026. This winter we plan to have frosty camp, a sailing camp at Easter and to put forward two teams for the Hurdlestone challenge in June – last time we entered we won so not pressure scouts!!
From the leaders’ perspective we are glad we are back to full water activities again. We would like to thank parents for continuing to support our section in all our adventures, it is much appreciated. None of this happens however with the scout team who diligently turn up week on week, and other section leaders who help out on an extra night, the beauty of flexible volunteering means you help when you can. We all supported our cubs and explorers with water opportunities this year and will plan in the same for 2025.
I personally would like to thank Bosun, Riley, Zippy, Dodger, Biffo, Landy, Baghera, Ketchup, Pearl and Chippy who without their continued support, risk assessments, giggles, laughter and ideas we wouldn’t have as much fun as we do.
Nicki “Capt’n” - Sea Section Leader
Explorers Section Report 2024
Friends, parents, and most importantly scouters lend me your ears.
Looking back over the last 12 months there have been a lot of changes. Goatee has left Explorers to focus on his business and as part of the leadership team we wish him the best of luck.
Oakley, Chilly and I sat down and decided that we would run Explorers as a collective, and I have been nominated as spokesperson. Since we have taken control, we have spent more time out of the hut then inside it. Activities outside in all weathers and locations.
Easter egg hunts around St Mary Church – which after an hour of them looking I took pity on them and told them where I hid them!
A visit to the police station – they were locked up in the cell for the evening! Bread and water all around. Who can forget the “Turkey Run” we had around Christmas time. We tested their culinary skills with a pot night with tangiers and mini pancakes with tin cans for a stove. (this kind of worked as planned??!!?)
And finally, for most of the summer we were out on the water, sailing and kayaking. We were going underground caving, and literally climbing the walls rock climbing. We had 18 explorers sign up for Scoutmoor 24. Which from the stories I have heard was a great success.
My special thanks go to the other leaders within the group. Their skills and knowledge are helpful and without their support we would not have been able to complete half of this year’s program. Oakley for keeping me sane, Chilly for coming up with some new and sometimes crazy, ideas.
Lastly, let me thank, the parents, and the Explorers. Without you we would not be able to run the sessions and I for one would not be the same person without them!
HRH Princess P, Oakley and Chilly
