HALBERTON VILLAGE HALL

CHAIRMAN’S ANNUAL REPORT 2021

– Halberton Village Hall Management Committee 2020 2021 Debbie Affleck, John Anderson, Judy Austin, Ken Browse, Jill Canning, Barrie Corden,

Peter Grabham, Carol Graham, Terry Payne and Robert Stevens

It has been a very difficult year with all the Covid restrictions in place and the

lock downs in particular, which curtailed many of our normal Village Hall activities and hires. The National Government saw fit to continue with grant aid, and as you have heard from our Treasurer we are in a very sound financial position. The buildings are in a very sound state and are well insured as are all our fixtures and fittings and equipment, so we are in very strong position going forward.

During the year we took advantage of the shut downs and were able to do much needed work. We reshaped the bank and built a very strong retaining wall which will allow an additional disabled parking space (this was part funded from Colin Slade’s D.C.C. Locality Budget). We also closed off the unused old farm entrance to our adjoining property and had the stone wall rebuilt to a high standard.

All the outside locks were also changed with a lock box installed for access to the main building.

On the down side, during the summer of 2021 the pressure control of our heating system; housed in the loft; burst causing over £5,000 worth of water damage to the hallway below. Our team of VH volunteers worked hard to clear up the mess in the short and longer term and local craftsmen were employed to make good all of the damage. The hallway was returned to its former well decorated state and the heating system was repaired. Regrettably, our insurers ruled that the burst was due to wear and tear in the pressure unit and only paid part of the claim leaving the Village Hall to pick up the balance.

Hopefully, we can look forward to the coming year when all the groups and individuals can again hire and use our wonderful community building. But we must remember, many of us are getting older, so we must continue to encourage new members to be on the committee to keep a Village Hall for generations to come.

Finally, I would like to thank all the committee and the volunteers who have worked tirelessly in this difficult year.

Barrie Corden Chairman.
