Acting GSL’s Report 1[st] April 2022 – 31[st] March 2023

I am writing this annual report in the capacity of Acting GSL for 3[rd] Upton and District Commissioner for Slough Scouts.

I am pleased to report that we launched our new Squirrels section in April 2022, it is well organized and has a thriving membership. It has been another successful year of Scouting at 3[rd] Upton.

We are now running regular weekly meetings for Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and have a full program of activities. Both young people and adult membership are strong.

• The hall is well used and providing a reasonable level of income. We have replaced the electrical distribution board and many of the lights, the heating and switches during the year, and had the electrical system certificated.

• The financial position of the group is strong.

• We are planning for the re-organisation of the Scout Association which is planned for later in the year.

In drawing this report to a close I would like to say how proud I am of all the leaders within 3[rd] Upton, you are all a credit to the Group, to the Slough District and to the community at large. By providing active Scouting in Slough, we are changing the lives of young people and creating memories that I am sure they will treasure forever.

3[rd] Upton Squirrel Scouts Annual Report

It has certainly been an exciting and busy year so far for the Squirrels. With a year now under our belts we are gaining in confidence every week. We are very proud to have invested the first ever Squirrels in the Slough District, plus we have already been able to award many of our Squirrels their Acorn Awards just in time for them moving on to Beavers.

The Squirrels have been lucky enough to have taken part in so much already including a visit to the Jubilee Camp in June, and paying our respects to our former Patron, Queen Elizabeth, in September by laying flowers and our Squirrel Mascot ‘Upton’ at Windsor Castle. They all behaved impeccably at the Remembrance Parade representing 3[rd] Upton with great respect for the day. We have also enjoyed a fun-filled joint afternoon with the Beavers before breaking up for the summer with an epic water fight in the park.

Our Squirrels have been working hard towards their badges and having lots of fun along the way building dens, contributing to Slough Food Bank in our Community Impact Project, going on bug hunts, trying out orienteering, going on a space adventure, being scientists and trying out exciting experiments and showing great teamwork building Lego bridges so as not to be eaten by the sharks! They have also been very thoughtful in coming up with their ‘Squirrel Values’ which we now have displayed in the hall. We have lot’s more engaging and exciting evenings planned.

This year has certainly been a year of 1sts for our Squirrels and we have had a busy year with lots of activities happening!

December was our first Christingle Service at St Marys Church. Our Squirrels behaved beautifully and respectfully in church. We concluded 2022 with a fun joint Christmas party with our Beaver friends and had a special visit from the big man himself much to everyone’s delight!

2023 got off to a great start with our Squirrels learning about disabilities, creating awesome nature art, learning about Chinese New Year, bringing some of our favourite stories to life, making Valentines gifts for our loved ones, creating amazing designs with Lego and taking part in a joint Pancake Party with the Beavers. These activities have earned them an abundance of badges that they are very proud to have earnt.

In March we began work on our First Aid Level 1 badge and the Squirrels excelled once again. We had a fantastic visit from a paramedic who taught them the recovery position amongst other invaluable skills for life. Our Squirrels have also been learning all about the importance of recycling and learnt our Squirrel promise in Makaton!

We are continuing to work on our Challenge badges and have several Squirrels who will soon be receiving their Chief Acorns awards. Activity badges are always being included in our programme and we are definitely gaining confidence in our abilities as leaders. We have lots still left in our programme and we are looking forward to another great year.

Having had quite a few of our Squirrels move up to Beavers we now have the capacity to recruit some more and that is currently in progress. We have 3 full time leaders and we have also welcomed a new leader Clelia (Nibbles), into the section. I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Clare (Hedgehog) for helping us with ratios and Jon (Kaa) who regularly comes and helps out too. The Squirrels love their energy and crazy ways.

I would like to finish off by thanking my wonderful team, Vanessa (Skippy) and Dawn (Scrat), for their continuous hard work and dedication. The past year of running Squirrels with them has been a pleasure and they both work so hard behind the scenes helping to plan our sessions and support in every way. I really do appreciate having them by my side throughout this.

The future is looking very bright and exciting.

At our weekly meetings we work on our badges and challenge awards, play games and share our news. We also had a wet and wild evening and picnic in the park with parents.

We have taken part in the following weekend activities:Water activity day Children in Need activity day Black Park activity day Pancake party Christmas party Remembrance Day parade Christingle service

3[rd] Upton Cub Scouts

Section Report – Cub Scouts 01 April 2022 – 31[st] March 2023

A prime focus of this Cub Scouting year was the encouragement of our young people to achieve their Activity Badges and Challenge Awards, all leading to the ultimate Silver Award. The Cub Scout Silver Award is the highest achievable in their time with us and I am delighted that we presented 16 of these over the period of this report. More are on the horizon, and I am particularly delighted that many Cubs are now making the effort to achieve their awards by personal effort at home.

In addition to this we had one Cub Scout who managed to obtain every Activity Badge it is possible to obtain. A wonderful achievement and one that has now set a record within our Scout Group.

On the outdoor activity side, the highlight of our year was undoubtedly the Slough District camp held in June 2022. This was organised in celebration of our late Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee and was attended by Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and our new Squirrels from across Slough District.

Our own adventure activities were organised for our Cubs later in the year whilst we continued to maintain a fun-filled balanced programme during our weekly meetings.

We are extremely fortunate to have a great team of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer leaders, fully supported by equally enthusiastic parents. Together we will continue to make memories for our Cubs with more activities and fun in 2023/24.

3[rd] Upton Scout Troop

Section Report 1[st] April 2022 – 31[st] March 2023

In the summer term we went to the Jubilee riverside centre and went kayaking for a few weeks enjoying the warm weather. In June we joined the rest of the sections and groups in Slough for the District Jubilee Camp at Walter Davies scout campsite. Over the long weekend we celebrated the jubilee with lots of activities ending in a giant street party. Over the course of the term we worked with the local church to do our Astronomer Badge. William Hershel was buried there, and a local man and ex Nasa employee Ron Lewin help the scouts complete their badge which were awarded at a BBQ in the summer. In August we went to the Kent International Jamboree. We were joined by scouts from all over the UK and the world. A week of activities and evening entertainment was fantastic, and the scouts made friends with some of the thousands of scouts camping together. In November we represented the scouts at the local Remembrance Day parade. We also went camping, it was extremely wet but the scouts manged to cook on fires, we also had a fireworks display. In December we brought back our annual tradition of Christmas bowling, bowling in Christmas jumpers.

In the new year we went to trampoline park Jump in. In April we went camping again this time at Dorney wood. The weather was much better, we had fun lighting fires in drier conditions.
