Chair’s Report

It’s a real pleasure to welcome you all to this year’s AGM.

I’ve had the privilege of being involved with 1st Hedgerley in one way or another for over 20 years, and I continue to be amazed by the breadth of activities and experiences our young people enjoy — all thanks to the dedication of our volunteers who deliver such a varied and engaging programme.

The impact of Scouting on young people cannot be overstated. In today’s fast-moving world, it’s more important than ever for young people to have the chance to come together, learn new skills, explore new places, and push themselves to try new things. You’ll find more detail about each section’s activities in the leaders’ reports that follow, and I hope you’re as impressed as I am by everything they’ve achieved.

Thank You to Our Volunteers

We are incredibly fortunate to have such a committed and passionate team of volunteers. I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to our section leaders, assistant leaders, young leaders, and the many parents who support them week after week.

A special thank you also to Tom Winyard, who stepped into the role of Group Lead Volunteer this year, following on from Bob Thorpe’s leadership during a significant transition phase. One of the major changes during this time was the shift from an Executive Committee to a Trustee Board — a move that better reflects our governance responsibilities. The Board oversees our finances, premises, equipment, safety, and ensures we meet the policies and standards expected by the Scout Association so a big thank you to the Trustees for their dedication and support.

I’m especially grateful to Diana Blakemore for her ongoing support and guidance always.

Fundraising & Support

Fundraising remains a vital part of keeping the group running smoothly. Our regular Race Night at Caldicott School continues to be a highlight and brings in essential funds. We’re also incredibly thankful for the generous donations we’ve received from local businesses, parents, and members of the community. Every contribution, big or small, helps us continue to offer quality experiences to our young people - thank you.

Do keep an eye out for upcoming fundraising events - your support truly makes a difference.

Volunteer Recruitment & Programme Capacity

Like many groups across the country, we continue to face the ongoing challenge of maintaining enough volunteers to keep all our sections open and running smoothly. Sadly, we had to close our Squirrels section between Christmas and Easter but were fortunate enough to have volunteer support for it to start back up again and the section is now growing steadily which is good news. Recruitment remains a key priority, and we’re always on the lookout for new adult leaders and trustee board members to keep sections open.

Group Trustee Board 1[st] Hedgerley Scout Group Registered Charity Number 300677

If you’re wondering how you might be able to help, even in a small way, please do reach out. Scouting only works because people step forward.

A Tribute to Ian Francis

I’d now like to take a moment to remember Ian Francis, who sadly passed away a few weeks ago.

Ian was a long-standing member of 1st Hedgerley Scouts and contributed so much over the years - from camps and activities to sharing his vast practical skills with both adults and young people alike. Ian brought kindness, humour, and a true love of Scouting to everything he did. He will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are very much with his family. Thank you, Ian.

Looking Ahead – Our Scout Campsite Project

One of the most exciting developments this year has been our efforts to secure a long lease on the Scout

campsite at the end of Gregory Road which you may have already read about in earlier parent communications. The site has a long history of being used by Scouts and other youth groups, but it hasn’t been actively managed for some time.

We’re now working towards formalising a lease agreement with the West London Scout District (the freeholders), and we’ve already begun planning essential work to bring the site back to life. This includes removing unsafe trees and renovating the hut and storage areas. Thanks to the generosity of local donors - including parents and businesses - we’ve secured some early funding for which we are extremely grateful.

With luck and continued support, we hope to have the site up and running next year. We’ll soon be looking for volunteers to help clear and clean the space - and no doubt we’ll be calling on anyone with a paintbrush or roller to get involved before the grand reopening. It’s a brilliant opportunity for the group, and I’m looking forward to seeing it develop.

In Closing

Finally, I want to thank everyone who makes Scouting happen here at 1st Hedgerley. From our section leaders and young leaders to the trustee board, parents, supporters, and friends - this is a team effort in every sense. Your time, energy, and care create lasting memories and lifelong skills for our young people.

Let’s keep working together, growing stronger as a group, and giving every young person the chance to thrive through Scouting.

2024/2025 Cashflow and Year End Cash Tables

Our cashflow was acceptable in a year where we continue to spend to maintain the Huts. We successfully retained all rental users for both huts which helps greatly with offsetting the total costs of running the group.

Income: £ 59.5K of which £16.9 K was Hut rental and £10.0K was a parental donation to support the future project to re-open the Hedgerley Campsite. All Sections subscriptions generated £13.9K. Parental contributions to events and camps came to £15.9 K. Gift Aid £2.3 K was claimed as usual in March 2025 for the current

Group Trustee Board 1[st] Hedgerley Scout Group Registered Charity Number 300677

Financial Year. Income was higher than in other recent years due to the major donation and Racenight which contributed £5.6K gross income.

Fund Raising: Racenight as above.

Expenditure: £54.6 K was lower than a ""normal"" year with smaller but important projects to improve the Huts. The cost of running the two premises was £26.4K (Cleaning, Maintenance, Insurance and Utilities). Higher Electricity prices meant that we spent £8.6K on power. The cost of all external Scouting activities was £21.8K. The Annual Seniors Christmas party was supported again and cost just over £0.6K.

We spent £10.8K on Hut Maintenance: - A long overdue new Scout hut kitchen (made possible with the assistance of Ashfords in FC) and repairs to the Scout hut fabric £3.0K; Electrical upgrade/safety £3.3K for both

Bank balance: This income and expenditure resulted in the bank balance increasing by £4.9k during the year to £53.8k, representing a continued strong financial base for the Group. However, it should be noted that this included a £10k donation towards a future capital project, which was not part of "normal" income and expenditure in the year.

Premises - Scout Hut & Anstey Lodge: 1st Hedgerley Group

Youth Club - Anstey Lodge gifted to Scouts in 2017

The Youth Club committee was disbanded in 2017 and the Anstey Lodge was gifted to the Scout Group in Aug 2017. We are now responsible for the upkeep and usage. Thanks to Debbie Anstey and Peter Cathcart for their work to implement this change which is benefitting the Scouts in the long term. The balance of the Youth Club funds was also transferred to Scouts in Jan 2018, some £6 K. We are holding these funds under an agreement with the ex-Youth Club committee ringfenced in case a Youth Club can be re-instated and needs start-up funding.

2025/2026 Outlook

The 1[st] Hedgerley Group continues to be strong financially with the active support of parents and the community and this enables us to provide a good level of support for all Scouting activities. I have enjoyed my 13th full year as Group Treasurer and will be happy to continue into 2025/26 and beyond.

Group Lead Volunteer’s (Formerly called Group Scout Leader) Report

This is the first report that I write as group lead volunteer. I took on the role in January of this year and at times it has been challenging although greatly rewarding.

All scout groups across the country have had to get used to embracing the new scout system and ensuring that all volunteers have become compliant with the mandatory training . I was very pleased that as a group, all our volunteers completed the training within the prescribed time frame and that we are as a group fully compliant. We strive to ensure all our training is kept relevant and up to date and the effort put in by all volunteers to complete training on the new digital system is greatly appreciated.

I am happy to report that we were successful in finding a new lead volunteer for our Squirrel Drey and Lara restarted Squirrels shortly after Easter. She has led an amazing program for our youngest members since taking on the Squirrel Drey and I am looking forward to seeing the future activities she has lined up for them.

In addition, I am pleased that several new volunteers stepped up to help run our Beaver colony . Together we put together a great program and Beavers continued to run from Easter to the end of summer.

I am happily able to report that Graeme has recently returned to the UK who was a member of our Beaver team about 8 years ago before moving abroad. He has agreed to now take on the lead role for Beavers and therefore both of the youngest sections within 1st Hedgerley once again have a stable volunteer team and are destined to achieve great things.

When I took over as group lead volunteer, Zoe (aka Pigeon) had relocated and therefore I was without a section volunteer for Squirrels and running on a skeleton crew for Beavers. Reluctantly, we had to suspend our Squirrel Drey in January and at Easter a substantial number of our Beaver team moved to the Cubs section as their children had progressed to Cubs, leaving a skeleton crew within the Beaver section and that section was at risk of closing as well.

Group Trustee Board 1[st] Hedgerley Scout Group Registered Charity Number 300677

I would like to personally thank Lara for agreeing to be lead volunteer for Squirrels and further thank Sam and Holly, who both stepped up to assist Lara. Likewise, to Graham for taking on the Beaver section lead role along with Richard, Jonathan, Jonathan, Charlie, Sharon and Monica who all came forward and agreed to assist with the Beaver section. I very much look forward to helping all of you in taking our younger sections forward .

I of course do not forget the hard work put in by the Cub and Scout team volunteers. In particular, I would like to thank Lauren for keeping the Cub section running whilst on maternity leave and then after having her second child, Louis, our congratulations on his arrival. Thank you also to her team who have run the program and provided excellent evenings to Cubs.

Finally, I also want to thank the many young people who form our Young Leader team. They have all been Scouts with either Hedgerley or other groups and now volunteer on a regular basis to assist the various sections. They provide a valuable service to the volunteer team and often go unseen but never forgotten.

As I look forward, 1st Hedgerley is in a good strong position, and I hope to be able to lead all the sections and provide assistance as required so that we can continue to build on the volunteer base and provide great opportunities to even more young people. At the moment the group proudly has 9 Squirrels, 17 Beavers, 21 Cubs and 43 Scouts. I hope we can build on that membership to fill all sections and provide more young people with skills for life .

As is evident from my report above, much of this year has been spent finding new volunteers to help run our sections.

I therefore make a call to try and find more volunteers to get involved in Scouting. It is easier than you may think and one of the most fun, rewarding and positive things you can ever do. You can give as much or as little time as you like. Whether you can spare an hour a month or a day a year, we will match opportunities that fit your skills and time available.

We have opportunities both behind the scenes (such as social media and notice board management), to working with young people in uniform and a volunteer on an evening.

Group Trustee Board 1[st] Hedgerley Scout Group Registered Charity Number 300677

With full support and training, you can experience the fun, friendship and adventure of Scouting for yourself, all on a flexible basis. You do not need any previous Scout experience and we welcome everyone, both male and female and with no upper age limit. You do not even have to camp if you do not want to! So, if you would like to have fun and make friends, earn professional qualifications and make a real difference to the lives of young people please read on.

Join the Scouting Adventure in Hedgerley and discover that Scouting offers the chance to build on personal skills, such as teamwork, confidence and leadership, as well as gaining externally recognised skills, all whilst having a brilliant time.

The majority of our volunteers believe that the skills and the experiences they have gained through Scouting have been of relevance to their working or personal lives, so come and volunteer with us and make a positive impact on your community.

To get started with your adventure, talk to any of our volunteers, or feel free to get in touch if you have any questions, or would like to have an informal chat about where you could fit into the fun and adventure via my email at glv@hedgerleyscouts.org.uk

Section Reports

Scout Troop

This past year has proved to be eventful and enriching for our scout group, particularly with the successful completion of two summer camps since I last wrote a report, one in the Peak District in 2024 and another in Devon in 2025. Both camps allowed our scouts to immerse themselves in the great outdoors, learn valuable skills, and form deeper connections with each other and nature. Alongside these camps, we continued to host our regular Patrol Camp, Activity Camps, bivvy night, Night Hikes and Sleepovers and Mountain Biking Weekend, providing opportunities for fun and learning across a diverse range of activities.

In addition to these camps, we held numerous meetings throughout the year that covered both skills development and teamwork. Sessions included popular activities such as Patrol Challenges, Fitness Fracas, and Pioneering Challenges, as well as events like Air Rifle Shooting/Archery and Sedan Chair Racing. We also encouraged our Scouts to broaden their cooking skills with Backwoods Cooking, Ready Steady Cook! and the hotly contested Millionaires Banquet. These meetings not only engaged the scouts in essential skills but also encouraged a sense of community within the group.

Throughout the year, our scouts have also participated in various community-oriented events, litter picking, Remembrance Sunday and of course the annual Christmas party for our local senior citizens, fostering a spirit of service and responsibility. These occasions emphasised the importance of giving back and helping those that need assistance and providing meaningful experiences beyond just scouting.

A significant highlight of the year was the presentation of nine Chief Scout Awards, recognising the hard work and dedication of our scouts. These awards serve as an encouragement for all members to strive towards their personal best and aim for continued growth within scouting.

As we look forward to the upcoming year in which we will run many activities which our Scouts are used to along with a few new ones they have asked for. The year will end with WINGS, the international Jamboree in Windsor Great Park

Group Trustee Board 1[st] Hedgerley Scout Group Registered Charity Number 300677

which promises to be an exciting opportunity for our scouts. It will allow them to connect with fellow scouts from around the globe, exchange experiences, and further broaden their horizons.

While we celebrate our accomplishments, it’s also important to remember those who have contributed significantly to our group. I would like to take a moment to honour Ian Francis, who sadly passed away this year. Ian served the 1st Hedgerley group with immense dedication over the last eight years. He will be deeply missed for his unwavering support and the positive impact he made on countless scouts.

I would also like to extend my deepest thanks to all our volunteers for their tremendous support over the past year. Their guidance and commitment has been invaluable in creating a vibrant and engaging environment for our scouts and without their help Hedgerley Scout group would simply not exist or have been able to provide the great experiences that we do, to so many Scouts.

Thank you also to the Scouts for their enthusiasm and spirit, which makes every session enjoyable for

everyone involved. To the parents, your continued support is sincerely appreciated, as are the contributions from all the other volunteers who work behind the scenes to keep our group thriving. We look forward to another year of adventure and growth in scouting.

Finally, I end my report by saying that this will be my last report as Lead Volunteer for the Scout section. As many know, I took on the role of Group Lead Volunteer in January this year and both roles combined have been great fun, but too much for 1 person. I am therefore in the process of handing over the reins of the Scout section to others within the volunteer team and a further announcement in that regard will be forthcoming shortly.

It, of course, goes without saying that I have enjoyed every moment of leading such a vibrant team of volunteers and Scouts and I will certainly still be seen on regular occasions at Scout meetings joining in the fun and helping out. Should you also be interested in joining in that fun, then please consider joining the volunteer team and speak to either myself or any of the volunteers.

Cub Pack

Year after year, the Cubs amaze me with how much enthusiasm and passion they have to complete badges & try new activities. We currently have 22 Cubs, 6 left at the end of term for scouts and we had 1 beaver move up to Cubs.

A whopping 445 badges were handed out this year and 11 Cubs also completed their Chief Scout Silver Awards, congratulations to them all. The Cubs are always so enthusiastic to fill their jumpers with badges which is great to see!

Programme

During the spring term, we managed to take part in evenings to work towards the world challenge badge. We also worked on the artist, international and gardening activity badges too.

The Cubs got to play a game or two of Short Mat bowls which was great fun and a new activity for some, visit a Gurdwara in Slough where we learnt about the Sikh community, tasting some Sikh food and learning about the Guru Granth Sahib. We could not miss out on making some pancakes too, what flipping fun!

13 Cubs who had never skied before managed to get their skis on at Hemel Hempstead for a beginner’s ski session which was amazing!

In the summer term, we managed to complete the local knowledge, environmental and cooking activity badges as well as complete some more of the adventure and outdoor challenge badges.

We made some bee hotels from recycled materials to hang up in the garden, played cricket at the sports club with parents, sports day, and a lovely hike from Gerrards Cross to Hedgerley followed by chips, nom nom!

Our main trip out was to Burnham Beeches to enjoy a wildlife walk with the rangers; the Cubs had a lovely time. We also got out on the water at Taplow Lake where we did some kayaking.

This term, we decided to plan evenings such as communicator, pioneering, home help and camp preparation badge evenings. We are working towards our skills challenge badge. The aim is to focus on badges that the Cubs

Group Trustee Board 1[st] Hedgerley Scout Group Registered Charity Number 300677

have started but not finished so that we can fill their arms with lots of activity badges.

We are looking to visit PACCAR to take part in some axe throwing and visit an emergency service such as fire or police station. We have some airfix models to build which will complete the hobbies badge and we will finish the term with a lovely Christmas light walk around Hedgerley, Ho Ho Ho!

Events

County Camp 2025 - We took part in a county camp at PACCAR with the theme of pirates! There were a range of activities the Cubs took part in on the Saturday and Sunday which included the climbing wall, zip wire, go karts and many more activities. There was also a campfire where the Cubs got to show off their loud singing voices!

Thanks

I would like to thank the leadership team which consists of Zoe, Matt, Jo, Bob, Charlie, Hana, and Ben! Thank you for all the hard work you put into Cubs and for making it entertaining and fun for everyone. Team work makes the dream work!

Our Young Leaders Helena and Daisy for running a few evenings and looking after the Cubs.

Our visitors who kindly put aside time to visit us making our programme diverse and exciting and last of all, thank you to all the parents and to the Cubs, we hope you enjoy every moment with us.

Beaver Colony

I write this report on behalf of the Beaver section given the recent change in our volunteer team. Beavers has seen a turbulent past 6 months or so with a potential suspension of the colony at Easter due to a lack of volunteers.

I am happy to be able to report that those difficulties appear to be behind us with a new team in place led by Graeme. Thank you, Graeme, for agreeing to take on that role and I know you are excited about leading the team and getting to know the Beavers and leading them on adventures.

Looking back over the last term the

Beavers have had some brilliant opportunities from learning basic navigation skills with map and compass, to following a nature trail, leaf rubbing, bivvy building and of course backwoods cooking. In addition, they enjoyed a cricket session, and Kayaking at Taplow Lake.

Coming up the Beavers have an exciting overnight trip to the National Space centre which from experience I know will be an excellent event which the Beavers will gain a huge amount from. In addition, this term they will be developing their personal skills with various skills nights, emergency first aid skills, health and fitness and a fire station visit.

The Beavers will also be asked to set their own personal challenge to complete, before being set the challenge to complete the volunteers assault course which will see them climb through the rafters of the Scout hut! Their program is busy and will see our Beavers collect both their Skills and Personal Challenge core badges.

As we look forward to building on the number of Beavers the colony has, I wish to thank the volunteers both past and present who give up their time to put on such excellent activities. Many of the past team are now within our Cub section continuing their Scouting journey whilst the new volunteer team are learning the ropes and putting their own skills to good use, whilst learning new ones. Thank you all for the effort and time you have devoted to our Beaver Colony to ensure that it continues to thrive.

Squirrel Drey

This short year has been a fantastic period of growth for our Squirrel Scouts. We have had a wonderful time getting know each other, playing new games, learning new skills and exploring our local area. From our taster sessions in March to our final celebration session in July the energy and enthusiasm of the young Squirrels made those few months unforgettable.

Membership

We have been delighted to see so many young faces eager to take part, and the group has grown in confidence and friendships over the term.

Highlights of the Year

Some of the most memorable activities this year included:

Badge Earned

Between April and July our Squirrels worked hard and earned the following badges:

All about Me, All Together, Be Active, Go Wild Plus, participation in PACCAR Camp, Wildlife Trust June Challenge. Thanks, and Appreciation

A huge thanks you to all our wonderful parent helpers and volunteers – we couldn’t do it without you. Our supportive Scouting family and most importantly our amazing Squirrel Scouts for their curiosity, kindness and enthusiasm every week.

Looking Ahead

As some of our Squirrels will move to Beavers and we are looking forward to recruiting new little adventurers this term! We are excited about new activities, more badge work trying to achieve the Chief Scout Acorn Award Challenge Badge and continuing to build confidence, teamwork and fun in everything we do.

Confirmation of Appointment of Trustee Board

The responsibility of the Trustee Board is purely for governance which mainly concerns three elements:

Under charity commission rules and POR, the Trustee Board should have between 5 and 12 trustees. These include any ex-officio appointments, nominated appointments and co-opted trustees.

The Trustee Board recommends that the Group Trustee Board should consist of a maximum of 9 members as follows

At the AGM we will therefore ask the Group Scout Council to confirm the appointment of:

The following as Trustees:

Jimna Illath Poyyil and Kezia Barnes have resigned their positions, with thanks for their contributions to 1[st] Hedgerley Scout Group.

In addition, we would therefore ask the Group Scout Council to approve the Trustee Board

when suitable volunteers are identified.
