Group Report for District AGM

Group Lead Volunteer’s (Formerly called Group Scout Leader) Report

It is with great pleasure that I prepare this report having been asked to return, in an interim role as Group Lead Volunteer (Acting), to my Scouting roots in 1[st] Hedgerley after 4 years with British Scouting Overseas in Southern Europe District. It is fantastic to see that the Group is thriving with over 100 young people, 11 young leaders and 44 adult volunteers. We also have one of the few Squirrel Dreys in the County bringing scouting to young people from the age of 5.

During the year the Scouts have Camping on three occasions with the summer camp held in the rather wet Welsh mountains (why does it always rain on a Scout Camp?). They have volunteered at St Mary’s, delivered another stunning Christmas party for our local seniors, produced fantastic food at the annual Millionaire’s banquet, and entered the Grims Dyke hiking competition.

During the year, the cubs camped in tepees at PACCAR in the Autumn, joined the Beavers for a jump-in sleepover in the spring and had their main summer camp at Leeswood campsite. Zip wire, crate stacking, abseiling, high ropes, trampolining, air rifle shooting and archery were just some of the activities completed during the camps.

Meanwhile our Beavers have managed to deliver an activity-packed programme including rugby coaching, escape rooms and laser tag at Paccar Scout Camp. They encountered some slippery reptiles and rounded off the year with memorable carol singing at the Farnham Common House care home.

From the cries of delight, it was safe to say the residents thoroughly appreciated the carols. They have visited a Gurdwara in Slough, learned about the history of scouting for Founder’s Day, enjoyed numerous cycles of an assault course at the hut, were visited by the Coldstream Guards and went pony riding.

Finally our Squirrel Drey has had a packed year learning more about building and lighting fires and learning how to play rounders. The Squirrels have developed their skills in many areas working on countless badges including Get Outdoors, First Aid level 1, Air Activities level 1 and be healthy. They also been cooking over a fire and working towards the Super Chef badge.

The success of the Group is down to our amazing volunteers, who freely give up their time, to help deliver amazing, fun experiences and skills for life to our young people. From our Section Leaders, Tom Winyard, Lauren Stevens, Bob Samara, Zoë Ramsdale and Zoe Carbelleira, to our Section Team Members, Occasional Helpers and Trustees, everyone is amazing. I am so proud to be associated with them all.

Section Reports

Scout Troop

Over the past 12 months, we have enjoyed a week of camping in the rather wet Welsh mountains taking on various adventurous activities that can be enjoyed in the area provides. This followed by weekend camp at Phasel’s wood and then finally our annual Patrol Camp at Braidswood.

In addition to the fun on camps, we again put on a Christmas party for our local senior citizens and put in a days volunteering at St Mary’s to help clear and maintain the graveyard. Our Scout’s put in spectacular effort for our annual Millionaire Banquet when they all catered for and entertained members of the volunteer team.

We proudly entered 3 teams into the Grims Dyke hiking competition with 2 of them placing in the top 10. There are of course so many activities and evenings that they cannot be listed here, but they all go towards the eventual goal of our Scout’s getting their Gold Awards before they leave us.

In that regard we have 6 Scout’s that have recently completed their Chief Scout’s Gold Award with another 4 for who should be able to claim that award following our summer camp in July, when they will complete their Expedition.

Cub Pack

Another fine year for the cub section with 6 silver awards and 250 activity badges awarded which is amazing, Well done Cubs!

Thanks to Bob S and Skip for keeping the cubs section running while I was on a maternity break and to the whole leadership team for supporting them both over the past year. The cubs managed to camp in tepees at PACCAR in the Autumn, join the Beavers for a jump-in sleepover in the spring and they had their main summer

camp at Leeswood campsite. Zip wire, crate stacking, abseiling, high ropes, trampolining, air rifle shooting and archery were just some of the activities completed during the camps. It’s great to see such a variety of activities for the cubs to try.

During the Thursday evenings, there have been some lovely events including kayaking at Taplow lake, playing rugby, canoeing, fire lighting, making paracord bracelets, learning about virtual reality, completing some gardening at the hut, learning about Losar and playing boules.

Our group currently has 29 cubs and we will continue to thrive as the winter approaches us.

I am looking forward to another year full of fun, laughter and smiles all round.

Beaver Colony

It is hard to believe we are approaching the end of another year of the Beavers section. We have managed changes in team leadership alongside delivering an activity-packed programme.

This year to date we have awarded 307 badges, covering all the challenge awards as well as numerous activity and staged badges. 12 Beavers have been awarded with the Chief Scout’s Bronze award, the highest a Beaver can earn. Congratulations to all.

The autumn term saw Helen Rumsey take on the reins of section team leader. Beavers had an active term with rugby coaching, escape rooms and laser tag at Paccar Scout Camp. We encountered some slippery reptiles towards the end of the term, rounding it off with memorable carol singing at the Farnham Common House care home. From the cries of delight, it was safe to say the residents thoroughly appreciated the carols.

Sadly, we had to say goodbye at the end of the term to Bob Samara, assistant section leader, as he focused on leading the Cubs section. Many thanks to Bob for supporting the section over the last few years.

The section team leader baton was passed on to me for the run in through the spring and summer terms. The start of 2024 saw us visit a Gurdwara in Slough, where we were very warmly accommodated. Beavers learned about the history of scouting for Founder’s Day; and enjoyed numerous cycles of an assault course at the hut. We joined the Squirrels for a visit by the Coldstream Guards who were very calm and professional when met with an impromptu power cut in the village, causing us to run half the session by torchlight. The Beavers ended the term with pony riding, which they all thoroughly enjoyed.

Despite the great British weather, we have spent more time outdoors this summer term. Beavers have been den building as well as hunting for bugs and treasure, although not at the same time! We will be ending the term with a chip hike, kayaking and a celebration of the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Whilst we have not scheduled any camps this year, Beavers have experienced Nights Away at Gulliver’s Land in October, where they were challenged with some stomach-churning rides, and a joint sleepover with the Cubs section at Jump In trampoline park in Slough.

Although we have seen 10 Beavers move up to Cubs, we currently have 25 Beavers, having welcomed new members from our Squirrel drey as well as from the waiting list. We gained a new Young Leader in Roshan, who has quickly displayed great leadership qualities with his help assisting the Beavers. In terms of team volunteers, Beth Ballard, Charlie Skivington, Jodie Stottor and Lydia Westhoff have joined us during the year, although we need further support from parent volunteers to keep the section running as several of our regular volunteers will be moving with their children to Cubs after the autumn term.

Mat “Rat” Ketteley will unfortunately be leaving us at the end of the summer term. He will be greatly missed.

Squirrel Drey

It has been a packed year for the squirrels learning more about building and lighting fires and learning how to play rounders. We have been developing the children’s skills in many areas and working on lots of badges including Get Outdoors, First Aid level 1, Air Activities level 1 and be healthy.

We’ve also been cooking over a fire and working towards the Super Chef badge. The squirrels are keen to get a night away booked in soon and hoping to have a sleepover in the new term.

We have plans to increase numbers (currently at 8) in the autumn term but can only

do so with more help. We are looking at launching a recruitment programme for more team members as we are currently relying on parents staying every session.

The section is growing slowly and enquiries are coming in but ultimately the section requires more support at ground level.

Having said that our parents are very supportive and moves are being made to recruit them and hopefully encourage them to take a more active role.
