## **Chair’s Report for 1[st] Hedgerley Scout Group**

## _**Lisa James**_

Chair, 1[st] Hedgerley Scout Group

As another scouting year goes by, I am thrilled to say that 1[st] Hedgerley Scouting goes from strength to strength thanks to the number of wonderful youngsters we have in our group and our fantastic team of leaders and helpers. I hope you will enjoy reading about the activities each section gets up to in the section reports that follow.

Every week Scouting gives almost half a million 4-25 year olds skills that help them at school, college, further education and the workplace. We help them gain confidence to get them through tricky challenges by giving them the opportunity to learn skills for life. Outdoor activities undoubtedly have a positive impact on their health and mental wellbeing.

Volunteering can be a brilliant way to boost your mental wellbeing too. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re helping young people get skills for life and you might even learn a lot about yourself along the way! If you want to meet new people, try new things yourself, get outdoors more, create vital opportunities for young people, make a positive impact in our community and create memories that will last a lifetime, then please consider joining us as a committed parent helper. We welcome future leaders, administrators, fundraisers, campers, activity planners and tea makers and appreciate any time you can spare – you won’t regret it. We always rely on volunteers to keep the group and sections running as well as they do, and to ensure both our huts are safe and well maintained.

I’d like to wrap up by thanking all our Leaders, our Group Scout Leader Adrian Dickinson and our Board of Trustees for continuing to ensure that the group is run safely, economically and is accessible to all. At this point I would also like to acknowledge the sad loss of David Banks who made a huge contribution to our local community in many ways including stepping up to the call to become a Beaver Leader when we needed new leaders. He had also taken on a role within British Scouting Overseas (BSO) which was sadly cut short by his illness. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Finally, I hope you and your families all enjoy a happy and healthy summer ahead Please always feel free to contact me or any of the leaders if you have any questions, concerns or want to find out more about 1[st] Hedgerley.

## **Group Scout Leader Report**

As you can read in the Section Leader reports, we have had a fantastic year of Scouting with a wide range of activities and a welcome return to a full season of Camping. We have come out of COVID with a thriving Group, heavily over-subscribed waiting list and robust financial position.

This is all thanks to our hard working volunteer Section Leaders, Assistants and Parent Reps. Without their dedication, we would not be able to put on such a programme.

Our new Squirrels’ Drey is fully subscribed and seen as a model for other Dreys being set up in the County. Zoe Munro (Pigeon) has been the driving force behind this initiative to introduce Scouting from age 4 in our area. She is also Section Leader for the Beaver Colony and is no doubt deafened after all the young people go home on Tuesday evenings.

As many of you will know, Lauren (Akela), the Cub Section Leader, had a baby earlier this year. We are all very thrilled for her, wish her well and look forward to the time when she can return, but that won’t be for some time. For the time being “Skip” has agreed to step into the role of Akela with Bob joining as Assistant Section Leader. Their experience ensures that the Cub Pack remains well run.

The Scout Troop, led by Tom, have had a very full year as you will read in his report

The Section Leaders and their teams all deserve our gratitude and deepest appreciation.

We do rely on other volunteers to keep the Group on the right track. Our joint Quartermasters, Andy and ‘Skip’, keep a close eye on our stores & Scout Hut and run a comprehensive maintenance program so that everything’s in order. Chris ensures that our camps are well run while Janet looks after the subscriptions. Phil carefully manages our Scout Hut and Anstey Lodge, providing us with a health rental income.

Neil, the Treasurer ensures the financial books are in order and Diana, the Secretary looks after the rest of the admin while Lisa, our Chair, keeps us all in order. The Fundraising Committee that Lisa ran hosted an excellent event to raise funds for the Group and to support past scouts who were lucky enough to participate in the World Jamboree in South Korea and the Grand Tour in Europe.

Please join me in thanking everyone for giving their time and energy to making 1[st] Hedgerley such a strong Scout Group.

Next year, there will be a modest change in how we are organised. Our regular Executive Committee meetings will be split between a Trustee Board responsible for governance and a Leader Group responsible for operations. This will keep our Scout Group in line with Best Practice as set out by the Charity Commission. Parent / carer representation on the Trustee Board would be welcomed, so please let Diana Stokes or myself know if you would like to help govern the Group.

Looking to the future, we are always on the lookout for new supporters and volunteers. A lot of new Beavers have joined recently and it is really encouraging to see how many parents are willing to help out as volunteers. Without that support, we would not be able to put on such a rich and varied program. But volunteering does not have to be limited to supporting the odd evening. Please let us know if you would like to help out as a Section Assistant or promoting Scouting to the local community.

In addition, the Scout organisation offers a lot of support and a comprehensive training program for those that want to take it to the next stage and become a Leader. Please message one of the Section Leaders or me if you would like to know more.

We look forwards to welcoming everyone back after the summer.

## _**2022/2023**_

_This post COVID year Scout finances returned completely to normal / business as usual. Our cashflow was normal and we also successfully attracted new rental users for both huts which helps greatly with offsetting the costs of running the group._

_**Income:** £55.5K of which £16.0K was Hut rental and £6.7K came from Racenight fundraising. All Sections subscriptions generated £14.5K. Parental contributions to events and camps came to £16.8K. Gift Aid £4.7K was claimed as usual in March 2023 for 2 years._

_**Fund Raising;** Race night our fund-raising event raised a net £4.6K_

_**Expenditure** : £ 54.8K was in line with a normal year and meant that we are able to continue to support Scouting from a strong financial base and with good cash reserves .The cost of running the two premises was £18.5K (Cleaning, Maintenance, Insurance and Utilities) The cost of all external Scouting activities was £24K. We spent £7.4K on Hut Maintenance mainly on new and necessary heating and lighting in the Scout Hut. The Senior’s Christmas party was supported again and cost just over £1000._

## **Squirrels Section Leader Report**

Squirrels is a new section opened in March 2022. We were the first drey in Buckinghamshire to open and I am very proud of the fact we managed to get Squirrels off the ground.

The year has been challenging and rewarding in equal measures. Going into this I thought it would be similar to running Beavers and now I realize it is completely different.

Squirrels need at least 20 more activities than Beavers because they get bored of things so much quicker.

Squirrels also say my name about 150 more times in an hour than Beavers (Pigeon, Pigeon, Pigeon…)

I love running Squirrels because they enjoy such simple activities like bug hunting, stories and making fires. I can go on a nature walk and collect worms one week and the next we are making up stories about magic trees. Squirrels definitely keep me on my toes.

In terms of leaders I am actively recruiting adults for Squirrels and would love to be able to open the section up to more children in September; however, in order to do this I will need more leaders. Monica is doing a wonderful job supporting the section but we do need more adult support in this area.

Next year I would love to arrange a family camp and we have booked the Squirrels on to the all sections camp at Paccar for the day along with the Beavers who are there for the weekend.

I have joined the sections together a few times this year including for the fire station visit and for football at Slough town FC (I forgot to inc lude all these activities when I wrote the Beavers section report!)

Squirrels are full of fun, full of energy and full of surprises. I hope to continue to grow this section over the coming year at the slightly later start time of 5PM.

On the whole its safe to say

We love Squirrels and they are here to stay .

## **Beavers Section Leader Report**

We have had an exciting year with the Beavers this year and with 3 more weeks (and a camp) left of the Summer term it's not over just yet.

The Beavers took part in a County wizard themed Beaveree, a summer camp at Paccar and a sleepover at the Battle of Britain bunker. This is all in addition to our weekly activities which have included helping the community by gardening at the local care home, our annual chip hike, bring your dad to Beavers pioneering day (saved by Tom W, Thank You!), lots of fires and even more marshmallows.

I am pleased to report that in terms of adult leaders 1st Hedgerley Beavers is in a really strong position with the appointment of Zoe R, Helen and Kevin and of course the last minute deadline day free transfer of Matt K to Beavers from Scouts. I am grateful to you all for your hard work, dedication and support.

We have a change on the young leader front too this year with Daisy leaving us to move on to Cubs and Sam sitting GCSEs, we have been fortunate to have Eliza and Harry C who are just starting out in their Young Leader adventures but who are doing a fantastic job, we also still have Archie who is part of the furniture these days and I value all their help and support immensely.

My last thank you is to someone who this year would have been impossible without, Jo Sherpa, who has been my badge buyer, organizer, parent rep, session planner and basically everything rolled into one - thank you for everything you have done this year.

Next year I am embarking on the huge challenge of retraining to be a teacher which is both daunting and exciting but means that my time will be limited so I will need the continued support of parents and leaders to keep Beavers the fun, engaging and adventurous group that is it. I know with the team we have in place that we are more than capable of making next year even better than this one.

In October we have a County Gulliver’s land trip planned already and I am in the process of arranging a Quidditch session so it looks like next year will be just as exciting.

Finally, I want to acknowledge the fact that the end of this term sees me having to say goodbye to all the Beavers I started with in the beginning of my scouting journey, and while I am sad to say goodbye to my OG Beavers I am excited to see them grow through Cubs and Scouts and hopefully on to become Young Leaders of the future.

Thanks

Zoe (Pigeon)

## **Cubs Section Leader Report**

Another amazing year has passed for the Cub pack and before I begin my report, I would like to thank everyone for the lovely send off in February and for the beautiful gifts & flowers. I was overwhelmed by your generosity and will make sure the vouchers are put towards something special. Noah is now 4 months old and is just perfect in my eyes! Special thanks go to Skip (Richard) and Bob for taking the reins while I am off, you are both amazing Akelas and are doing a grand job!

We have 26 cubs in the pack at the moment with 5 enthusiastic Young Leaders and 7 awesome leaders.

303 badges have been awarded throughout the year which is wonderful, it’s great to see the Cubs’ arms full of badges. There have also been 9 Chief Scout Silver awards handed out this year, congratulations to everyone who received the award.

## **Camping**

We have managed to take part in an activity day and a camp this year with another camp due in September at PACCAR sleeping in Teepees. The activity day was at PACCAR in March which included activities such as the zip wire, climbing and archery. It sounded like the cubs have a fun day packed full of activities. In May, County ran a sleepover in Derbyshire called Conkers that 14 of our cubs attended, along with so many other groups from the County. There were a range of activities available to take part in such as the high ropes, magic shows, barefoot challenges & rabbit warrens.

## **Programme**

During the 2022 winter term, we heard the news that Queen Elizabeth II had sadly passed away, so we decided to run an evening about her life and make a collage of the Queen using pictures from magazines and other crafty items.

We had Graham who came to visit the cubs to run a reptile evening where they got to hold iguanas, tortoises & even snakes, the cubs were all very brave and even those who were a little nervous managed to hold the snakes, I was very proud of them all!

We worked on a number or badges throughout the term including DIY, communicator, scientist, home help and naturalist badges.

AGM Trustees Report 2023

Our annual pantomime visit run by the Stoke Poges Players saw the story of Beauty and the Beast performed. It’s always fun hearing the Cubs shout “It’s behind you!” and “Boooooo” to the bad guys!

The new year was upon us and the spring term had begun, so why not start the term clowning around with a circus skills evening. The number of cubs that could perfectly use a diablo and a unicycle amazed me!

We made lanterns for Chinese New Year and learnt about the animals that make up the Chinese zodiac chart. Burn’s night is always good fun as I get to see how many Cubs are brave enough to try haggis and I was shocked at the number of Cubs that actually enjoyed eating it.

Other badges completed this term were Red Cross & First Aid, astronomy and home safety. We ended the term with a car simulator visiting us and showing the Cubs how to be safe passengers while sitting in a car.

The nights are then started to stay lighter for longer, which can only mean one thing, summertime! First evening back after Easter was the assault course, always good fun and adventurous. Badges completed this term are naturalist, navigator and backwoods cooking.

Our young leaders are always planning wonderful evenings with the cubs and this term they will be making ballista’s in teams which teaches the cubs team building skills. Towards the end of the summer term, we have lots of sporty activities planned including rounders, Father’s Day cricket, selfdefence class, sports day, canoeing in Taplow and of course our annual fish and chip hike.

I would like to say a massive thank you to all of the parents that have taken the time to help us during the cub evenings and on our camps. We really do appreciate all the support we receive.

I would like to thank all of the visitors for taking the time to come and run an evening for us and part knowledge onto the cubs.

Thank you to Ravi for supporting us with the parent rep role throughout the years. Unfortunately, Ravi will be leaving us at the end of June so I want to take this opportunity to thank Ravi for volunteering with us, we will miss you lots!

Thanks to the leaders & young leaders for supporting the group by running evenings, taking part in camps, attending meetings & generally bringing lots of fun & laughter to the group. I would like to welcome our new leader Dan and new young leader William who have joined us this term.

Let’s hope next year is even more exciting and adventurous!

## **Scouts Section Leader Report 2022**

I took a little time to revisit my report from last year before writing this report and pleased to therefore be able to reflect that at Christmas we were once again able to put on our Senior Citizens Christmas party, having had to cancel it the previous 2 years. This was the first party that I have had the opportunity of throwing and it was fabulous to see so many people in the hut enjoying themselves. A huge thank you to everyone that assisted from decorations, napkins, food and presents, the bar, the carol singers and of course the Scouts themselves for serving the seniors and putting on their performances. The Scouts thereafter managed to enjoy their own party, at the Paintballing site, a great day even if we did decide to choose one of the coldest of the year!

Last year was also another first for me, in attending a summer camp and as I busily prepare for our summer camp this year, it’s lovely to reflect on the 12 nights away we had last year, from summer camp, patrol camps, freezer camp, bivvy and survival camp and finally the Mountain biking weekend. We also got out and enjoyed some great hiking experiences, entering several teams into both the GrimsDyke and Quest Hikes, at which we faired exceedingly well, our top teams placing 3[rd] and 5[th] .

Looking over our program from the last year, it is truly great to see how much we manage to cram into a year, from first aid training, wides games, gas safety and cooking pancakes, science weeks to sports relief, softball and canoeing to name just a few. We further enjoyed 2 evenings with our ex GSL learning about aircraft and then enjoying a visit to White Waltham Airfield. It always encouraging to see the engagement we get to all these activities from our young people and it is truly satisfying to know that they also gaining so much from them.

As the year/term comes to an end, I also reflect on my 7 oldest Scouts who will be leaving me after summer camp. It has been a great and mainly enjoyable journey to watch these 7

young people mature. They have all contributed to the troop in their unique way and it will be sad to see them move on. However, I know that the next bunch are all keen to take on PL roles and follow in their footsteps. Of those leaving me, it is fantastic that 3 of them have done all that is required to collect their Gold Chief Scout awards and we are hopeful that following summer camp, the others will all have completed their awards as well.

AGM Trustees Report 2023

With 7 leaving this term, it will give me an opportunity to review our waiting list and hopefully take all those that have requested to join and until now we have had to ask to wait. In relation to numbers, we have had close to 40 young people on out register with a regular turn out in excess of 30. It is wonderful to be able to provide such great experiences to this number of people and as they keep coming back, I presume we are getting it right.

In that regard, I have to thank my excellent leadership team without whom Scouts would simply not operate. Andy and Chris, thanks for generally being around and letting me rant and rave as necessary, Nick and now Chad for looking after the badges and everyone else from stopping me going of the rails. It has been a fantastic year since my last report and I am looking forward to the next.
