Chair’s Report – Maria Wishart

As the pandemic continued during 2021, our leaders carried on delivering top quality Scouting, adapting to the circumstances and ensuring that our young people had the opportunity to interact with others and to continue their Scouting journey. Once more, then, on behalf of our young people and their parents, guardians and carers, I want to thank our dedicated and passionate leaders for all that they did to keep Scouting going in these extremely difficult circumstances. They delivered in very challenging circumstances, often switching between virtual and face-to-face meetings at short notice, and continually responding to the ever-changing legal requirements and guidance. We owe a special debt of gratitude to Ruth Marienfeld our Group Scout Leader who worked tirelessly with the leadership team to develop these programmes, and to ensure that all requirements were met. Thank you also to the people worked behind the scenes on the committee to ensure that our group remained financially stable, and complied with all the necessary regulations, during these difficult times.

As ever, if anyone out there would like to get involved in our group, as a leader, helper or behind-the-scenes member, please do get in touch. This is your chance to step forward, to give something back, and to help ensure that Aspley Guise Scout Group continues to thrive. What are you waiting for?

Beaver Leader’s Report

Our Beavers have had a fantastic, fun-filled year!

In the Summer Term we returned to face-to- face scouting and were able to take part in some St George’s Day celebrations and socially distanced outdoor activities. We enjoyed working towards our Navigator and Campcraft badges through a mixture of at home activities and Beavers sessions that included tent pitching, knot practice, outdoor cooking and hiking. In the Autumn term we welcomed some new Beavers and got our blood pumping and hearts racing as we completed our Health and Fitness badge. We had our very own Sport Day, made lots of yummy, healthy snacks and completed a messy experiment all about our teeth. We also worked on our Money Skills badge and even set up our own shops to trade toys with each other! Lots of Beavers attended our Pirate themed sleepovers this term, which were a huge success.

n the Spring Term our themes were Dinosaurs and Space. We donned our white coats and goggles and had a messy Science night (which included making space food!). We also had lots of fun outdoors learning about the night’s sky. At our Spring sleepovers the Beavers had lots of fun completing a dino ranger trail before their fish and chip supper and nighttime film (they even managed to get some sleep!).

We were fortunate enough to be able to enjoy a number external visits throughout the year. These included a trip to Climbquest, the Safety Centre and a visit from the Reptiles Roadshow.

Quite a few of our Beavers have achieved their Chief Scout’s Bronze Award this year. We are very proud of them and want to congratulate them on their achievement.

A huge thank you to the whole team: Moema (Phaona), Chantelle (Iki), Jenny (Sahi), Bob (Won-tolla), David (Kaa) and our Young Leaders.

Victoria Rolton (Nushka)

Want to help this amazing team more? What do you enjoy doing? How much time do you want to give? We’re on the lookout for people to complete a variety of tasks. We’re flexible and will manage to find something for everyone, no matter what time or skills you have!

Cub Leader's report

Summer Term 2021 saw interesting times! We were given the green light to return to face-to-face Scouting but with additional Covid measures in place. The Cubs section ran alternating weekly sessions of meetings and newsletters with athome tasks. Working with a maximum of 15 Cubs per group, Leaders doubling up across Tuesday and Thursday and no sharing of equipment was certainly a challenge but with some brilliant teamwork and the help of our new Leader, Georgia, we managed frisbee golf, fire lighting, hiking, and making mini ballistas. We even did some backwoods cooking using metal colanders as individual fire bowls.

Over the summer holiday many of the Cubs and Leaders attended the activity days at Phasels Wood, organised by Ruth, where the campfire singing was inexplicably voted the favourite activity.

Autumn Term saw a very welcome return to (almost) normal although we tried to stay outside as much as possible. In November we held our first post-Covid residential at the Leslie Sell Campsite in Bromham, easing everyone back in with small groups staying either Friday or Saturday night. As Covid numbers started to climb again, we even held our worldfamous Christmas Party outdoors.

We stayed outside throughout January before venturing indoors for shadow puppets, 3D mapping and a trip to Hollywood Bowl. The Cubs turned their attention to World Scouting including cooking, dancing, and activities to celebrate Lunar New Year. A weekend residential was held at Phasels Wood campsite in March, again with groups staying for one night.

In all, the year has been challenging but very rewarding; Leaders and Cubs have worked together to complete as full a programme as possible. We also thank parents for their help, flexibility and understanding.

With the implementation of Red, Amber and Green Covid restrictions, the troop operated a hybrid model of faceto-face meetings with smaller groups and online activities for the first part of the year. Once Covid restrictions were lifted, we returned to full Scouting, with two troops meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays. Traditional scouting skills, such as pioneering, campfire cooking and map reading have been complemented by some new experiences.

As ever food has always been popular, with the Scouts Learning new cuisines through street food and vegan cooking evenings as well as our usual Pancake, Burns Nights and patrol cooking competition. We have been out and about in our community, with treasure hunts to learn the history of Woburn Sands, nature trails in Milton Keynes, litter picking around Kingston, and recording the location and status of street lighting in Aspley Guise. The ability to run overnight camps was curtailed, but we managed to conduct a Japanese Christmas-themed residential weekend in December, a bushcraft day and a backpacking expedition for the older Scouts.

A big thank you to the leaders who delivered the varied programme over the year. In addition, the parent helpers who provide much-needed adult support during some activities are invaluable, and without this support many activities would not be possible.

TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT

Year Ended 31st March 2022

An exciting year of activities for the Aurora Explorer Scout Unit including a wide range of activities, all of which were planned by the Explorers themselves.

In 2021 we successfully completed the Air activities badge with the key highlight being cooking a three-course “in-flight” meal for £5 that fitted on a sheet of A4. Tasty and economic.

‘Smores and campfires at the hut have become a termly favourite and a great way to reflect on past activities whilst planning ahead. Cooking and food in general have been popular themes with our Biscuit World Cup (Custard Creams!), Bake Off (Gordon Ramsay’s Shortbread?), International cooking evening, Pancakes, scavenger hunt with chips, Soda Bread, and more biscuits.

Night hikes have been broadly successful, but often slower than anticipated due to finding stuff to investigate and discussions to be had along the way. Our biggest hike was a night-long hike planned and led by Ruth, starting at Albert Bridge on the Thames at 10pm and following the river downstream to finish at the Dome, cable car over the river and then an amazing hotel buffet breakfast. Some sleep was had in the park by the Cutty Sark at 4am. An fantastic overnight experience, with investitures on Tower Bridge included.

Our first Explorer Camp was held in August at a great campsite, Gradbach, in the Peak District. Claire kindly assisted as the permit holder and was amazed by the wonderful bunch of people who thoroughly looked after her and each other. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding provided great opportunities for games and generally dunking each other. A free drop abseil over the River Wye from the Monsal Trail was a real challenge for many, but all rose to the occasion. A long final day hike included paying our respects to Ruth at Lud’s Church, eating overpriced ice cream, and watching climbers at the Roaches. Feedback was very positive, only thing really missing was a campfire – duly noted.

Other highlights include a balloon debate where individuals argued for their worthiness to be kept in a sinking hot air balloon, indoor sky diving (a real challenge or many), supermarket A to Z, water fights, signing for the deaf, disability awareness, lots of wide games, Art Scavenger hunt in Campbell Park, MK Monopoly run, AquaPark, Ice Hockey and more.

Looking forwards we have more exciting plans including both a Winter and a Summer Camp and more biscuits.
