NFYFC PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I was delighted to be elected as NFYFC’s President earlier this year. It's a huge honour, especially as I've been involved with the organisation at all levels throughout my life. Indeed, it was the skills I gained through YFC that led me to many other interesting and worthwhile opportunities, for which I am greatly indebted.

I first joined Newton St Cyres YFC in Devon, where eventually I became Club Chair – one of the toughest roles you can have as you’re amongst your peers who all know you! After that came County, Area, and national chairmanships before becoming President of the European Organisation.

Developing the skills and confidence to do these roles and all that follows is where YFC excels.

The YFC Competitions programme looks just as good, and is as important today, as it was when I was a member.

Brainstrust was always my favourite competition. It was less formal than debating, but it taught valuable skills for confidently delivering a few words spontaneously. A skill I've found myself relying on many times, as I am sure you will in the future!

There is also teamwork that comes from being involved in competitions and other YFC events. Whether that’s representing your club at the county rally or competing in a team at a national final. That’s the joy of YFC, and there’s much to be gained just from taking part – so get involved, get stuck in, and enjoy all that YFC has to offer.

With so much going on, there’s something for everyone. It doesn’t matter in the slightest where you come from, what you believe in or who you are. There’s a place in YFC for everyone.

While you don’t have to be a farmer to be a Young Farmer, the organisation’s role in championing agriculture and rural life should not be underestimated. As the UK continues to shape policy post-Brexit, your voice has never been more important. So don’t be afraid to speak up, use the skills that YFC has taught you and help shape your future.

I am always impressed with the incredible work that YFCs do to support their local communities. From the huge fundraisers to the community projects – they all positively demonstrate the impact of YFC on others. This generosity of spirit can greatly enhance YFC members' personal wellbeing as well.

It also makes me proud to be your President, to support our officers and to represent the organisation. I hope to see many more of you enjoying all the benefits of membership over the coming year.

John Lee OBE DL

NFYFC President 2024-25

COUNTY PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It has been an honour and a privilege to be your President. A very big well done and thank you to all those that have supported and continue to give your support to the Young Farmers movement it is greatly appreciated.

A massive well done and thanks to Edgcott and Winslow for a very successful show this year. Good luck to Princes Risborough who are organising the show for 2025. Another fabulous job on its way. Thank you to everyone for giving up your valuable time and hard work in organising the highlight of the year.

Maddie, Ben, Amy and Holly are all keen club and county members and have been great leading the county, organising events and taking club members to both Area and National competitions. Thank you to the management committee and Louise, your County Administrator, for always being there, working tirelessly behind the scenes. listening and being available to talk at any time. Louise is always ready and pleased to help you.

And finally, a big thank you to all the members. Without your passion for your clubs and County Bucks Young Farmers would not exist. Well done and here’s to a successful 2025!

Nicky Morton

County President 2023-2024

COMPETITIONS REPORT

This year has seen a continued increase in members to not only compete but also represent Bucks at Area and National levels.

Stock judging is the one competition that keeps us going all year round, with equine and beef always kicking the year off. Even with tB being a continued nuisance for local dairy farmers, we didn’t let that stop us and we had a full class of entries into the ‘distant’ diary stock judging at rally, with pictures being taken in the parlour ahead of being shown to the class on the day. We even had two members go forward and compete in the SEA finals at South of England show, bringing back the Senior Pig Stock judger of the year title for Holly Gilbert and also seeing Ashley, an Aylesbury junior representing Bucks in her first ever year of stock judging. We can’t wait to see where she goes next.

Moving on to the main competition of the year that we all look forward to, and that couldn’t go ahead without all of our advisory, friends and families support – rally! Thank you Edgcott and Winslow for putting on such a fierce competition with something for everyone to show off their talent. As always, every club pulled together and took rally as a chance to show themselves, and the other clubs, what they are made of. A slight change to the scoring system saw junior and senior clubs working together towards one common goal, that has reportedly made a difference to the club relationships going forward. Princes Risborough took the trophy for another year and also won the junior tug of war, whilst Edgcott and Winslow claimed victory in the ladies and mens teams, all 3 going on to compete at South East Area. We are very proud of our junior PR team and senior boys team made up of E+W and PR lads who competed at the very competitive national finals.

Impressively, this wasn’t the only national finals that Bucks was represented in. After a cutthroat win at southeast area, beating teams in all other counties, we sent a county team of PR, EW and Buckingham members off to the national finals at the competitions weekend. On the same weekend, James Nixey, Henry Brooks, Scarlett Mercer, Holly Gilbert and Dave Wyman all ferociously debated in the Senior Debating final, whilst Henry also made his own stab at victory in the Situations Vacant. We also had a mixed County team compete in the Volleyball final on the Sunday.

Bucks also saw a Show Choir, Junior Reading team, junior and senior Members of the Year show off the talent that we have to offer here in Buckinghamshire at the SEA rounds. Well done to Maddie Kimble for coming third in the senior Member of the Year NFYFC final.

A personal thanks from myself is due, to all those members who put in the time and energy to practice, travel and compete in all competitions; whether that’s internal competitions like the pool night or national finals, my role as comps chair wouldn’t be much fun without you competitors! And also to Louise and the many volunteers, of whom there are too many to mention, who provide stock, steward and judge all of the competitions so that we can enjoy the fun bit – competing! I am excited to see where Bucks YFC can stamp their name next year.

Cheers to us,

Holly Gilbert

STATUTORY DECLARATION:

The Federation is constituted as an Unincorporated Association and governed by its constitution adopted on 12[th] November 2021.

The charity’s charitable objectives are:

To advance the education of young members of the public at large in their knowledge of agriculture, crafts, life skills, rural affairs and country life, and

In the interests of the social welfare of such members to provide and promote the provision of facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupations, being facilities which will improve their conditions of life and will assist in the development of their spiritual and mental capacities, self-reliance and individual responsibility so that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of the community.

They are achieved by County and Clubs hosting varied programmes and meetings encompassing all areas, carrying out community and fundraising work, member training and through our annual Country Show and Rally which is open to the public.

The charity recruits its members from a significant section of the community at large. Everyone aged 10 to 28 years old can be a member of the Federation in order to participate in activities and discussions that increase their knowledge of agriculture, crafts, rural affairs and country life and help them acquire skills for life. The charity actively recruits its members, aged 10 to 28 years, from within Buckinghamshire and its borders. The County and club activities also contribute to and create leisure activities for members and on occasion for the rural community in which the charity operates. The community around the charity benefits from our members being active citizens that contribute to the rural community.

The Trustees confirm that they have paid due regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit in deciding what activities the charity should undertake.

Grants/Other Funding :

The South of England Show Committee awarded us £333.33 towards the cost of the First-Aid course that was arranged for our members in July. This course was free of charge for members and Club Leaders attending, with 12 participants taking part. Those attending gained a Level 3 First Aid at Work qualification, with the plan that Clubs would have a qualified first aider attending meetings making them safer for members, and that the attendees gained a recognised qualification that they could use in their careers whilst learning a valuable life skill.
