NFYFC PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It was a difficult start to the 2022 membership year with the sad loss of NFYFC’s Patron The Queen. For more than 65 years Her Majesty was committed to supporting Young Farmers’ Clubs. She was a figurehead like no other, whose compassion and steadfastness has been an inspiration to YFC members, including myself, across the generations.

We must ensure her legacy lives on – with YFCs demonstrating excellent leadership, generosity of spirit and good citizenship.

Looking back on the year, I can find many examples of YFCs doing just that – through the many fundraising activities, the competitions to develop rural young people’s skills and the projects that support local communities. You should be proud of all you have achieved. I was honoured to attend your first ever YFC Achiever Awards ceremony in Birmingham in 2023, where I presented the awards. What a showcase for YFC. I was fortunate to meet all the winners and to hear about the amazing work they have been doing. From the impressive rural entrepreneurs to the community fundraisers and farm safety champions – there was much to celebrate.

It was a reminder about what individuals can accomplish through YFC. The skills learnt and the connections made can transform lives. I was heartened to see that clubs recognised the value of their Federation by voting in favour of investing in the national organisation this year. The cost of living is affecting individuals, businesses and charities – support for each other is key.

Industry challenges continue and NFYFC’s Route to Success survey showed how difficult young people think it will be to work in the sector. There’s appetite and enthusiasm for farming but the lack of access to land and finance are barriers. All credit to the YFC AGRI team who have been working with Defra and providing resources for farming members to help them on their journey. Help is out there if you want to get started and exploring all options is advisable.

I know I’m excited about the future. After meeting members and seeing the work you are doing, I believe both farming and YFC are in safe hands. Make sure you treat them well.

Nigel Owens MBE

NFYFC President 2023-24

COUNTY PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It is an honour and a privilege to be your president. It is great to see the Young Farmers growing from strength to strength. Well done to you all for your effort and thank you to past members for supporting your clubs.

A massive well done and thanks to Buckingham for a very successful show this year, and good luck to Edgcott and Winslow who are organizing the show for 2024. Thank you so much to you all for giving up your valuable time and all your hard work in putting on the highlight of the year.

Your County Chairman James Nixey is doing a fine job and becoming National Vice Chair which is certainly putting Buckinghamshire on the map, thank you and a very big well-done James. James’s two Vice Chair’s Maddie Kimble and Ben Newbury are both keen Club and County members. Thank you both for the support you give to everyone. Thank you, Louise, your County Administrator, for always being there, listening and being available to talk to at any time. She is always ready and pleased to help you.

Overall, a big thank you to you, the members, for being so passionate about your clubs and county. Without you Bucks Young Farmers wouldn’t exist. Well done.

Nicky Morton

County President

COUNTY CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Yes, it's not a miss print - it's me again! Hello, members and supporters of the Buckinghamshire Federation, it's been an absolute honour to have been your County Chair for my fourth year this year, and what a year it's been. We recently finished the membership year on over 200 members again, which is something we all need to be proud of and it just shows that, as a county, we are as strong as ever.

A big part of YFC is the competitions and yet again we excelled this year, making it through to the National final's in Dance and Hockey. Alright, we didn't get placed, but I know we will be back fighting next year. As individual member's and as clubs please continue to challenge yourselves, take part in everything you can. You really do get out what you put in. I'd like to congratulate everyone for their achievements at the rally this year, its always incredible to see the skill of some of our members. Thank you to Buckingham and the team for hosting, and well done to Princes Risborough for holding onto your title of winners. We recently voted to change the way the scoring is done, so I look forward to seeing how that plays out next year.

Quite possibly the proudest moment of my YFC career so far, has to be when Buckinghamshire was awarded the Merrik Burrell Tankard at the NFYFC AGM in April. We won this for increasing our membership by 65% over the last three years, an incredible achievement and credit has to be passed on to each one of our clubs. When I put my name in the hat to be County Chair I could never have imagined the opportunities that would be open to me. This became apparent more so than ever this year when I was lucky enough to be elected as Vice Chair of the National Federation. I'd to thank everyone who has helped and supported me over the last few years, Sam, Maddie, Gillian, Quiche and Ben, to name a few. However a special mention has to go to our very own County Administrator, Louise, who has been working for the county for 10 years now, thank you all. Your belief and confidence in me (at times!) has pushed me to achieve more than I could have ever imagined.

Don't forget; Confidence is key and Keenness is contagious.

Over and out.

James Nixey

Buckinghamshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs County Chair 2019-2023

STATUTORY DECLARATION:

The Federation is constituted as an Unincorporated Association and governed by its constitution adopted on 12[th] November 2021.

The charity’s charitable objectives are:

To advance the education of young members of the public at large in their knowledge of agriculture, crafts, life skills, rural affairs and country life, and In the interests of the social welfare of such members to provide and promote the provision of facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupations, being facilities which will improve their conditions of life and will assist in the development of their spiritual and mental capacities, selfreliance and individual responsibility so that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of the community. They are achieved by County and Clubs hosting varied programmes and meetings encompassing all areas, carrying out community and fundraising work, member training and through our annual Country Show and Rally which is open to the public.

The charity recruits its members from a significant section of the community at large. Everyone aged 10 to 28 years old can be a member of the Federation in order to participate in activities and discussions that increase their knowledge of agriculture, crafts, rural affairs and country life and help them acquire skills for life. The charity actively recruits its members, aged 10 to 28 years, from within Buckinghamshire and its borders. The County and club activities also contribute to and create leisure activities for members and on occasion for the rural community in which the charity operates. The community around the charity benefits from our members being active citizens that contribute to the rural community.

The Trustees confirm that they have paid due regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit in deciding what activities the charity should undertake.

Grants/Other Funding :

We were lucky to receive two grants this year, one from the Rural Youth Trust and one from the Buckingham and Villages Community Board. We are very thankful to have had the support of these organisations.

Rural Youth Trust – a grant of £280 was awarded to Buckinghamshire FYFC to cover the hall hire costs and training materials required for the Inter-County Club Officer Training Day being held in November 2023. Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire are joining forces to deliver the training in an effort to build inter-club and county relationships and to provide members with the skills they need to lead and run their Clubs effectively as well as developing their own personal skills. There are plans to continue to run the Club Officer training as a joint initiative if the feedback is positive.

Buckingham and Villages Community Board – a grant of £950 was awarded to enable us to purchase a new projector, projector screen and laptop. This equipment will be used by the County’s trainers when they are out visiting Clubs delivering the range of NFYFC Curve modules as part of NFYFC’s inhouse training programme. The equipment is also available for Clubs to use for visiting speakers or any activities that may need it. Clubs have been encouraged to plan the training into their termly

programmes, and within County we currently have five qualified trainers ready to deliver any training needs. County has also been encouraging members to become qualified trainers through the NFYFC Train the Trainer scheme and we had two Club Leaders qualify earlier this year – the course costs for any members wishing to complete this are paid for by Bucks FYFC.

Mr John Baylis

Mr Baylis sadly passed away this year, he was a County Life Vice-President and life-long supporter of Bucks FYFC both at Club and County level. We are grateful for his support and friendship to many over the years.
