Chairman’s Report for 2022
2022 saw most of the Groups returning to use the Centre with one or two falling by the wayside due to continuing concerns regarding Covid19 and lack of membership.
I would like to thank Denise, our Treasurer and Sumi our Secretary for the work done during the year. Also Sarah King joined us in February to take on the paid role of Bookings Manager and I would like to thank her the efficient way she has carried out the position since taking up the role.
We had been lucky in obtaining Grants from the Government, totalling over £16,000, in respect of the Business Shutdown Scheme during 2021, and a further £2667 was received this year. The Treasurer will confirm that we are still on a Financially sound footing.
Following the Building Survey done in August 2021 the points raised have slowly been addressed although there are still many to be undertaken, although not urgent. One comment was in relation to the front entrance not being of safety glass or double glazed. A new door and screen has now been fitted, which improves the look of the building. This was paid for from existing funds but for any further Capital Expenditure grant funding should be explored.
We now have a regular Gardening Company look after the premises but I would suggest that this be reviewed at some point to see if a cheaper alternative can be found.
Last September I gave notice that I would be giving up my position as Chair at the AGM. After publicising the vacancy no one came forward so in desperation I placed an article in the Local Press stating that unless a replacement was found the Centre was at risk of closing. This did provoke a response and I am pleased to say a replacement Chair has been found and also 3 other Trustees have been appointed. Thanks to them for coming forward and they are here tonight.
Unfortunately there was one blight to this episode in that a Gentleman came forward and agreed to take up the position. He was in his 30’s and full of many ideas to make improvements. He was so certain that he would go ahead I gave him a set of keys to the Building, only subsequently he sent an email resigning the position. I still await the return of the keys.
A new Constitution was agreed in September and this has been registered at the Charity Commisssion. This now sets out the Area of Benefit within which the cost
of hire is reduced. Also the main Committee members retire after 12 months and have to be re-elected.
The centre is a great asset to the local community and with the additional Trustees we now have a team in place to keep it going.
