## The Prometheus Trust
## Chairman’s Report 2023-24
The Prometheus Trust has seen steady activity over the year on both its publishing and educational sides: new titles have been added to our catalogue and all our courses have seen growing numbers attending.
## **Publishing**
During the year we have published two books: an anthology from the International Society for Neoplatonic Studies, _Platonism and it Heritage_ ; and an extensively revised second edition of the _Seven Myths of the Soul_ . Several titles in our catalogue have been reprinted in order to ensure that all our books are available. Background work required for the transferring the whole of the Thomas Taylor Series into a more modern format continues at a steady pace.
Work on several volumes is in hand, and these should be published in the coming year.
The new editorial board announcement was made in June, together with a revised statement of our publishing aims and policies.
Our own sales and those via our North American distributor, Kindred Star Books, remain at healthy levels.
## **Education**
The education programme of the Trust has settled into a good rhythm: our residential study weekends (six per year, divided into two modules, the first in autumn and the second in the winter and early spring) have continued with increased attendance; our three regular zoom-based courses at introductory, intermediate and advanced levels have continued, again with increasing numbers.
We have run our regular London evening session on a monthly basis, and although numbers for these remain low, we consider these an important element of our ongoing service to
those of the general public who are interested in serious Platonism.
We are now running regular “open sessions” via zoom – at present once a month (with a repeat based on a more USA oriented time zone). These are proving increasing popular.
## **Conference**
Our annual conferences are now well established, after the covid interruption between 2020 and 2022. This year’s theme, _The Embrace of Neoplatonism_ , attracted several fine papers which formed the basis of a lively and friendly weekend with 26 attending. Professor Michael Griffin gave a wide-ranging keynote address, _A World in a Grain of Sand: A Platonist model of dialogue and the good life_ . The sixteenth Thomas Taylor lecture was given by Professor Sara Ahbel-Rappe – _Theurgist Dreaming the Platonist Tradition_ – on the Saturday evening. A musical and poetic interlude was provided by Professors Jay Bregman (saxophone) and Nancy Ogle (readings). As always the conference was an opportunity to meet old friends of the Trust as well as making new connections. 26 people attended.
## **Website**
This summer saw the launch of our new website – the fruit of long planning and careful work. This provides a more responsive and up to date presence on the internet, and which has received favourable comments. We would like to record our thanks to Luis Castaneda and Timo Kuchheuser amongst many other volunteers who gave their time and talents to the project.
## **Public Beneft**
The above activities are considered to be of public benefit and pursued in fulfilment of the Trust’s stated purposes: all our zoom courses are offered free of charge; face to face meetings are charged at cost (and where necessary, subsidized) and we price our books to ensure that they are within the reach of ordinary students.
## **The Trust**
The have been no changes with regards to Trustees this year, but we continue to look for possible additions to the board in the future. We have revamped our Editorial Board this year: it
now consists of 16 members, a mixture of Trustees and those drawn from the wider world of publishing and academia.
We continue to cleave to the words of Socrates in the _Apology_ : “I also say that virtue is not produced from riches, but riches from virtue, as likewise all other human goods, both privately and publicly.”
